Congress has a tendency to own the credit for all good things happened in India after independence. I would like to know, why the same party disowns responsibilities for wrong things happened in India after independence. Congress led central government owes 90 percent responsibility for the system of black money. Actually government of India blindly pursues the policy of erstwhile British government which has led us to such a big problem of black money. If the centre is really serious about bringing back the black money stashed in the foreign banks, then why it doesn’t allow enquiry of the property of all MPs, MLAs and MLCs, first class government officers and the entrepreneurs whose yearly turnover is above Rs 20 crores. I am a hermit, even though, I am ready for scrutiny of my wealth and property. Government always gives excuses that foreign governments don’t give information about the money stashed by Indians in their banks. But if you come up with an Anti Corruption Law and register FIRs against suspects and seek information about their money stashed in the foreign banks, foreign governments will definitely take it seriously. We know that cases of corruption and money laundering are viewed as serious cases by all governments in the world. It is my humble request to the government of India to scrap the big currency notes like that of Rs 1000 to end the regime of black money inside the country. Replace the regime of all the direct and indirect taxes by transaction tax immediately. This will have to be done by the government alone. You can’t always shy away from your responsibilities by mere saying that the foreign governments are not cooperating. When I met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi in June this year, Rahul Gandhi said that Prime Minister will take a call in this matter while Prime Minister agreed that it is not right to allow the circulation of currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000. It is note-worthy that terrorism and naxalism are surviving on the black money in this country. Following a widespread demand for bringing black money from foreign banks, the ill-gotten money stashed by Indians in Swiss banks have been shifted to the banks of USA and UK. USA and UK are neck dip in debt. In fact USA owes the foreign debt of over USD 667 lakh crores. If these countries are so neck dip in debt, where do they get money to lend to other countries like Pakistan? It is a fact that the luxurious life style of the people of European countries is possible only because of money stashed by people of Asian countries in European banks. According to a recent report, about 600 lakh crores are stashed in USA and US government protects the people who have their accounts in US banks under Financial Secrecy Act. It proves that USA and UK are emerging as new haven for black money. Government’s claims of having struck agreement with 85 countries of the world are nothing but a cheating on the people of this country. In fact, the government has sought information since early days from the Swiss government about black money stashed by Indians. But the same information sought by our government from US and UK governments is only for current year. It shows that the government is trying to save black money holders. The international laws under which Colonel Gadhafi of Libya and Hosni Mubarak of Egypt were prosecuted, the accused of Bofors scam, 2G scam and many other scams in India should also be prosecuted under the same laws. Till 1952-53, there was just six per cent black money in the Indian economy. But today it has gone up to 50 percent. It is our movement which should be credited for triggering a debate in the Parliament over black money. Some leaders have suggested me to focus on yoga instead of speaking about economic issues like black money. But perhaps these leaders are unaware of the fact that I too have a right to seek information from the government. If the information is denied, I have full rights to get them forcefully but by non-violent means. It is not justified that there is only one direct tax on rich but a poor is forced to pay about 31 kind of indirect taxes. It will take time to develop a mechanism to fight corruption. It could take even 50 years. But we should not forget that if all the black money stashed in foreign banks is brought back to country, our nation will emerge as a superpower in the world. During Swami Ramdev January 2012&YOG SANDESH&03 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 4 India as our martyrs wanted to see We would make the kind of 04&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 5 all the national festivals, Republic Day is a significant festival. This is celebrated on the 26th of January, with a great fervour. On the 15th of August, our country became independent from the English rule. Constitution assemblyframed the Indian constitution and it was ratified on the 26th of Novemeber, 1949. Indian constitution was fully adopted on the 26th January 1950. Among O n the 26th of January 1950, our country became a republic and the day is celebrated as Republic Day. On this republic day I want to brood over the desperate political, social and economic state of the country. There is no bigger duty than that to the country. I would not dupe my country for my own interests whether individual, political, economic and family's. I would fully invest with body, mind, money and my life for the growth of the country. These are the thoughts of Venerable Swami Ramdevji. He says he would not bow down by the corrupt system, legal inflictions against him. He adds "I am one of those soldiers who win by struggling against truth, justice and dignity". There are four supreme powers, Money Power, Peoples' Power, Political Power and Soul-Power. We want to develop Soul-Power through Yoga Power to unite Peoples' Power. We want to establish economic stability by curbing financial pilferage. Along with this we want a control over Political Power by inculcating it with values, dignity and humbleness. Because unbridled Political Power antagonizes Peoples' Power and abuse of Money Power causes inequality, violence, and disharmony and harms peace. Swamiji believes that whenever Peoples' Power and Money Power reach in the hands of corrupt, dishonest and criminals, country suffers from violence, crime, extremism, discrimination, exploitation and injustice. When fair and honest people find Money and Political Power, society will enrich with social service and harmony and the country will strengthen with nationalism, spirituality and humanity and develop accordingly. Directionless independence would destabilize an individual, the society and the nation. And mindless restrictions or discipline tend to suppress people. So, we should not let our eyes shut under extreme independence and discipline. If country's leadership lacks transparency, vision, humility and exertion that country can not be secure. Unfortunately, instead of exertion, we witness coward-ness, helplessness, instead of transparency, short term interests and double standards have become supreme. It's time now that we put aside false promises and imaginations and work in the interests of the nation. In our country, every section of society, people from every religion dreamt of getting independence and sacrificed accordingly to free the country from English rule. Today, sacrifices of our freedom fighters have been wasted. This month we have the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand, Subhash Chand Bose and Lala Lajpat Ray and the death anniversary of Mahatama Gandhi and Savarkar.Vir Savarkar was the first patriot to declare mutiny against the English rule in 1857. His whole life was dedicated to the nation. After independence, Swami Ramdevji, with selfless devotion, is endeavouring to bring nationalism in the country, by making people aware of Yogadharma. ByYoga Power, Swamiji wants to inculcate nationalism among people. Patanjali Yogapeeth is heading the movement of nation building by making people aware.Without bringing-in awareness among people, development of nation would only be a dream. Swamiji holds the dream to build a progressive, healthy nation with dignified values. Swamiji has set out a five point objective - Healthy India, Self-reliance through Swadeshi, Hunger, poverty and unemployment-free India by controlling population and political corruption-free India by 100 percent polling.Swamiji's only supreme objective is the welfare of an individual, of the society, of the nation and of the whole world by decentraliseddevelopment and spiritual socialism. Decentralised-development and spiritual socialism will bring social and economic justice to the people. Everybody will progress, will get self-respect and will win the right to live with self-respect. India will stand out as an economic and spiritual superpower. India will be recognized as a spiritual country rather than a secular country. You also become a part of this meritorious act of Swamiji. Congratulations to all the Indian on the occasion of Republic Day. Acharaya Balkrishna Editor, Yog Sandesh We want to develop Soul-Power by means of Yoga Power to unite Peoples' Power. In the Indian culture and tradition, seers and `sanyasis` have always alerted the rulers in the interest of the nation for fair and justified rule. I am a `sanyasi`. Participating in politics actively is against `sanyas` religion but keeping my ideals Maharshi Vashishtha, Vishwamitra, Sandipani, Maharshi Dayanand, Swami Vivekanand, Maharshi Arvind and revered Mahatma Gandhi in mind, I consider it my moral, constitutional and spiritual binding to raise voice for the interest of the people of the nation. You are renowned economist of the world and presently, holding the post of Prime Minister of India. Thus, you are like father to entire population and their well being is your responsibility. The great scholar Chanakya has said ‘sukhasya mulam dharma, dharmasya mulam artha, arshasya mulam rajyam and rajyasaya mulam indrijaya‘. Thus, state is the base of prosperity and fortune. Only in a good governance fund generation, safety of fund, preservation, distribution and then all-round development is possible. This brings prosperity in the public and the nation. Maharshi Manu too has said that ‘Sarvoshayamev Shochanam arthashocham param smritam‘. In the present context, I am writing this letter to you on three issues on the behalf of millions of population, suffering with corruption, partiality and suppression. I am sure that within one or two weeks, you would make me aware about the policies and action taken by the central Government in this context. Not only our nation, but entire world is facing a war like situation on economic front. India is the forth largest economy of the world. If the central Government takes strong action against the black money deposited in the foreign banks and smash 08&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 9 the parallel black money economy, no one can stop India becoming economic super-power. The central Government needs to take strong steps towards ending corruption, social inequality besides strong steps to channelize back money. In the democracy, Governments are elected to work constitutionally in the interest of the nation and if the Government is not disposing-of its constitutional and moral responsibilities, it looses its right to continue in power. If the central Government fails to take concrete and practical steps on three the nation, rulers have been dethroned and in some others, process is in progress. Now if the central Government failed to take concrete steps on these three issues, the public anger could burst against the central Government for which only the union Government would be responsible. And if you take courageous historic decisions on the issue the nation would be indebted to you. Millions of our countrymen are suffering from poverty, hunger, illiteracy, inflation, unemployment besides Maoism, naxalism and other social and economic discrepancies. Over 400 lakh crore money has been looted and deposited in foreign banks. With our money a few of dishonest and traitors Indians are living lavish life. Many countries in Europe are being developed with our money and in contrast millions of Indians are hungry and living deprived life here. I am confident enough that in the interest of the nation, the union Government would take firm and decisive steps in the winter session of the Parliament. I want to know the policy of the union Government in dealing with the corruption and corrupt system besides black money. I urge on the behalf of entire nation that if the central Government is serious on these issues, take the following three steps. 1] Bring back black money siphoned out in foreign banks in the interest of 121 crore people – The union Government could introduce a legislation in the winter session, declaring black money deposited in foreign banks and illegal property as national assets and take action on the following three suggestions in this regard. Also, the Government takes two-tier steps to expose black money deposited in the internal financial system to give economic and social justice to the people. important issues in the winter session of the Parliament, all 121 crore people of the nation including me would be forced to launch a massive agitation in democratic manner for which the Central Government would be responsible. Entire world is undergoing a revolutionary change. Anti-Government agitations are under-way in over 80 nations. In some of A]Action plan for identifying black money deposited in foreign banks and steps to bring them back. 1] All the members of Assemblies and January 2012&YOG SANDESH&09 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 10 If the central Government is serious to bring black money back to the nation it shall, in the winter session of the Parliament bring a legislation declaring black money siphoned out in other nations as national property. Parliament, who have been in the house in past 30 year, give details of their assets in an affidavit to the Speakers in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, Chairman of Rajya Sabha i.e. upper house and the Prime Minister. It shall contain every minute detail of their property as how much money each member of the family or institutions being run by them has deposited in different banks of India and foreign besides details of the land, building, money and other property in India in their name and members of the family besides other close relatives. Heir of the persons, who died shall give affidavits on their behalf. 2] To keep the public faith intact in the Indian democracy, Union Government brings a legislature in the winter session of the Parliament that any person, who held the post of Mayor, members of Legislative assembly, Parliament and other top political posts, Government officials of class one category and industrialists doing business turn over more than 20 crore shall be brought in the purview of this suggestion. A general purpose FIR shall be registered against such people, without any bias under Prevention of Corruption Act and Money Laundering Act so that every detail of money deposited in all the banks, in India or abroad are known. If any person has unaccounted money or property in foreign nations, stern action is needed. All the nations, even without formal treaty are bound to provide information to us under United Nations agreement as all the 204 nations consider money laundering as a serious crime and cognizable offense. Hence, the Government of India would, under this act get full information of the persons having illegal money and assets in foreign nations besides those, who does not have any money or asset hidden in foreign nations. Thus entire nation would give such politicians, officers and businessmen a lot of respect. This would be an acid test for them and their clearance in the process would be a certificate to their honesty. In entire world, Politically Exposed Persons (PEP) is an acceptable process against corruption and money laundering. Under this procedure there is provision of research and exchange of information besides recovery of black money at international level. Thus, the Central Government should take immediate action under PEP and get details of the foreign funds of the elements indulged in corruption from 2G to commonwealth scam. Also United Nations Convention Against Corruption - 2003 (UNCAC) is a very strong and effective medium to stop corruption. Thus, using its politically exposed persons provision, honest efforts should be made to unearth black money hidden in foreign nations and also make efforts that no further black money is being deposited in foreign banks. The other top agencies of the world, which cooperate in pin-pointing Politically Exposed Persons include a) Financial Action Task Force Against Money Laundering – 2003 (SATF) b) United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime – 2002 (UNODC) c) Third EU Money Laundering Directive 2005 d) The joint venture of World Bank and UNODC i.e. Stoles Estates Recovery Initiative 2007 (STAR) e) The Customer Due Intelligence Settlement (Bank For International Settlement) 2001, which is related to Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and f) Organization For Economic Cooperation and Development 1961 (OECD) etc. 3] Provision to declare the money pouring in the account holders in Indian and Foreign banks through FDI, FII shall be immediately made besides making beneficial ownership of various companies, trust and other financial organizations declaration compulsory. Under the above provisions, action shall be taken to bring back black money as all the eminent economists and independent economic institutions have accepted that the two treaties signed by India, i.e. Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA) and Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) are not empowered enough 10&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 11 to bring back black money, hidden in foreign banks. B]Suggestions and process to expose black money or assets, hidden in the internal economic system 1] Many renowned economists, tax experts and corruption watchdogs have consensus on one point that the taxation process of India is very complex and promote black money, corruption, price inflation and poverty. It is not pro-poor as our taxation is a direct tax, being given by prosperous people. But there are 31 indirect taxes, which are burden on over 100 crore poor and common people. Due to our faulty taxation process, consumers have to pay 50 percent to 100 percent more on the basic price of various products which is much more if compared globally and also against the rights and interests of the consumers. There is strong need to make total change in the taxation system. 2] My proposal is to abolish all taxes except customs and import tax with imposition of 1 percent to 2 percent Bank Transaction Tax (BTT), withdrawal bigger currency notes of 100, 500 and 1000 denomination as these steps could help in controlling deposition of black money, corruption, inflation, poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, fake currency, naxalism and terrorism. This issue needs an elaborated and impartial debate in the Parliament so that a big and practical decision could churn out. I am also attaching a statement, containing all details. For the development of the nation and for upliftment of farmers and poor Rs 1530 lakh crore would be easily available as tax every year. In the present economy, according to Reserve Bank of India, daily on an average of Rs 2.5 lakh crore and annually Rs 700 lakh crore transactions hold through banks. After withdrawal of bigger currency and 3] 4] 5] 6] implementation of BTT, withdrawing all other taxes, the annual transaction would mount to Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 lakh crore. Even if we collect 1 percent for transaction tax, it would be sufficient for all-round development. Bigger currency and more tax are the main reason behind unaccounted money. Common man and poor people have daily routine with Rs 50 or smaller currency. According to data available with Government of India, an average earning of a poor person is 26-32 rupees per day. The proposal needs serious thought and an impartial debate at national level. Apart from ancestral property or land, any person, families, companies or institutions have property over Rs 5 crore should be investigated by a high-power committee, comprising officials having unblemished career. And whatever illegal land, building and other property, extra from the known source of income shall be attached and declared as state property. Physical and Technical investigation – To collect factual information of the foreign tours of politicians, class one government officials and big industrialists, with the help of visa and immigration department and put surveillance at international gateways so that their foreign accounts could be traced. To collect details of the money, which has come to India through Mauritius route bringing legislation in the Parliament so that the real source of the money could be traced out. Constitute a special financial committee to vigil on the persons, companies and institutions, depositing money in Indian branches of foreign banks and money siphoned out abroad from all the Indian banks. All the members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) should fill an affidavit and give complete details of their assets. To weed out corruption, the Government shall take three immediate steps in the winter session of the Parliament so that the message January 2012&YOG SANDESH&11 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 12 could be loud and clear that the Government is very serious to weed out corruption. Every citizen should have right to education in domestic languages, with high spiritual values so that the children have strong character and they become true soldiers of the nation. 1] Pass a strong Jan-Lokpal bill in the winter session of the Parliament. 2] Make suitable amendments in laws to make executive, legislature and judiciary more responsible, accountable and transparent. Prepare strategy to introduce morality and spiritualism in 33 lakh employees, including from courts, Police and Revenue department, who serve to provide justice to 121 crore people. 3] To introduce justified revolutionary change in economic policies and tax system with abolition of all domestic taxes except customs and import duty tax and introduce 1 percent to 2 percent transaction tax and slowly taking the nation towards cash free economy, using cheque, drafts, bank transfers, debit and credit cards, smart cards and mobile transfers. With abolition of bigger currency and implementation of transaction tax, common man and industrialists would get rid of 32 different taxes and the problem of black money and corruption would be solved by 99 percent. It is a proposal that needs a national level impartial debate. If the Government does not take firm steps to bring black money deposited in foreign banks back to our country and not declare illegal property as national property and weed out the black money based economy in our country, then the people could doubt that illegal money siphoned out abroad and even deposited in our country belonged to people in Government or their protégés. amount equal to their annual produce so that no farmer commits suicide and the country get rid of price hike and poverty. To ensure power and budget sharing with village men, poor, labor, peasant, dalits and farmers, proportional to their population and to provide social and economic justice with justified valuation of their labor. In fact they fought the war of independence first-of-all. The British Government introduced law of land acquisition and grouped them in untrained category. Now in independent India also, Government is suppressing and exploiting them. It is very shameful. All our ancestors were basically from villages. The soul of India still lies in villages. We should narrow down the gap between shining India and poor India. 2] Equal Education system All citizens should have free education in Indian languages inculcated with high spiritual values under right to education. This would imbibe good character in children and they would be carved as patriots and not traitors. Children would have high values since childhood and they would never indulge in corruption and illegal activities. Germany, France, China and Japan have education in their own regional languages and if we would have same system, the farmer’s son would also be in race to become doctor, engineer, scientist, IAS and IPS officer. We are not against modernization, science and technology but we want fresh education system of science and technology in domestic languages. Japan, Germany and France provide education in domestic languages and are no less advance and modern than any other nation. Main six points for system change 1] Constitution of National Farmers Income Commission (Rashtriya Kisan Aaya Ayog) To constitute NFIC and give compensation to the farmers, an 3] Equal medical system for all 8.4 crore people in our nation are deprived of basic facilities of development. They should get free medical facility. Does only moneyed people have right to treat and right to live? According to Government figure over 65 percent to 70 percent people 12&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 13 could not get treatment due to highcost allopathy based system. The Indian medical system could treat 90 – 99 percent of the patients and it needs elaborated research. 4] Election Reforms i] State Funded Election. ii] For compulsory voting, 32 nations have introduced laws. In India too people should be made more responsible for the political system and the people, who vote should be given preference in jobs, business and other Government facilities. iii] Simultaneous election of Assembly and Parliament. iv] Right to reject. v] Strong laws prohibiting people with criminal background to enter election arena and other election reforms so that spotless people could enter assembly and parliament and loktantra (democracy) could not become loottantra (system of looting). Honest people would form legislation in the interest of the nation and tax money would be honestly utilized in the interest of the nation. and order situation and economic policies would not have crime, violence, poverty and disturbance. India immediately needs a new economical and legal revolution. Every year, lakh and crores of rupees are being looted by multi-national companies. To promote Swadeshi products, a law should be enacted to display `swadeshi` word on domestic products as it is mandatory to put a green and red sign on vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. It is our right to know about domestic and foreign products. If these three tasks are carried out, no person in the nation would be poor, illiterate of unemployed besides proper control on inflation. No farmer would commit suicide and none would sleep hungry. All would live with dignity and self-respect. If the central Government fails to take immediate and decisive steps in winter session of the Parliament, I would be compelled to launch a massive agitation in five states including Uttar Pradesh, where vidhan-sabha elections are to be held before going for a national agitation. I am sure that in one week you would make me aware of your reaction so that we could certifiably tell the countrymen about the seriousness of the Government in connection with black money and corruption. 5] National Management Policy Justified and transparent policies for water management, waste management, e-governance management and population control so that the nation could be taken at the peak of development. Respected Yoga Rishi Swami Ramdevji Maharaj, Namaskar, The capitalist model of economy is at the verge of collapse. This model promoted the consumerism, which has caused the bankruptcy of the so called developed economies of the world. overnment of India has taken an unfortunate decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail sector. We protest it in principal and practice. I am a supporter of open trade among the countries of the world. I believe that all countries of the world have a right to utilize their comparative advantage to manufacture cheaper and good quality products and these products should be allowed to be sold in the international market without any barrier. This kind of open trade will have a healthy impact on the world economy and individual economies. But western economic powers are using the free trade mechanism as a tool for the exploitation of the other economies of the world. Earlier, the same forces have used colonialism as a tool for the exploitation of many countries of the world. After the independence of these colonies, the western forces are using various means to exploit the economy of the erstwhile colonies. Free Trade is one such means for the exploitation of the new economies of the world. The whole world is like a one family. We have to make it strong enough for the benefit of the people of this planet. To strengthen the other economies, we will have to make ourselves stronger. But the tools of globalization are being used by the erstwhile imperialist nations for the sake of exploitation of the newly emerging economies of the world. Every country of the world has its own strength based on its geographical conditions, landscape, culture and tradition. It is the natural right of these nations to use these specialties for their own development. But when one nation invests capital in some other country, it is aimed at exploiting the economic strength of the G The biggest chunk of the global financial resources is concentrated in the hands of a few capitalist. country in which the capital is being invested. Actually these imperialist forces have cheated the world economy. These countries talk about free investment of capital, but when it comes for free use of labour force, they create so many hurdles in this direction. They deny visa and permit to the labourers of the other countries. I protest this particular system of globalization, which is based on exploitation and discrimination. I support the Indian concept of globalization, which is based inclusive growth, that is- growth and opportunity for the development of all. Following are some of the practical reasons why I am against the foreign investment1. The capitalist model of economy is at the verge of collapse. This model promoted the consumerism, which has caused the bankruptcy of the so-called developed economies of the world. The biggest chunk of the global financial resources is concentrated in the hands of a few capitalist. Biggest chunk of global wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few capitalists. The organized retail sector is a part of the nefarious design of 14&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 15 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. these capitalists to have control over global capital. Allowing FDI is illogical as it will do no good to common man. These companies have already destroyed many emerging economies across the world. Inviting them for investment in India is a dangerous idea. It is a high time for all of us to think seriously about how to tackle this challenge effectively. It could be a compulsion for us to invite those companies for investment who are supposed to come with modern technology in our country. But it is just nothing but hogwash to invite MNCs to invest in Indian retail sector. It is also illogical to invite foreign companies for investment by saying that such investments will help to control price rise. The government should tell us that where these MNCs have helped to curb rising prices. It is noteworthy that Indian companies were allowed to invest in multibrand retail market a few years ago with the argument that they will keep the prices under control. But the experience reveals that since when the big companies like Reliance entered in the retail market, the prices of essential commodities are skyrocketing. A media report says that about Rs five lakh crores of common man have been pocketed by the traders in the name of price rise during last five years. When the Indian companies like Reliance did not do any good for the people of this county, they how can you expect that foreign companies will help reduce prices of commodities. An anti-corporate movement titled- Occupy Wall Street- is going on in USA with a call1 percent versus 99 percent. Organized Retail global market is meant only to benefit just 1 percent people across the world and rest of the 99 percent are to stay deprived. We have to develop a trade mechanism which will benefit the society. What we want to see- 100 traders each with Rs one lakh crore or lakhs of traders each with Rs one crore? Which of the above mentioned regime will help to build an equitable society? It is for us to decide. We should deny the the US model of growth which has infuriated the average US citizens. Our government argues that investment by foreign companies will allow the huge inflow of for-ex reserve. But it is absolutely wrong. Actually these foreign companies invest their capital for once, but take away a huge sum of foreign currency from our country every year. So in reality, the investment of foreign currency is temporary. But in long term, it will dry away our foreign exchange reserve. The claims that foreign investment will generate employment, is also far from reality. In reality, these companies will definitely generate a few lakh jobs but at the same time will destroy the livelihood of crores of people. Even people in USA are finding it difficult to get a job due to the policies of these MNCs, how will they do good for the people of India. The kind of job opportunities our government is talking about will be akin to the jobs of fourth grade employees who will be badly exploited by the foreign companies to serve their own interest. 7. The government argues that at India is suffering due to price rise, wastage of food grains and low prices paid to the farmers for their produce and India needs FDI in retail to resolve these issues. Such arguments are absolutely wrong and far from reality. Actually the people of this country are badly hit owing to rampant corruption in the government, redtapeism, irresponsible behaviour of our politicians and government officers. People want to get rid of these corrupt officers and politicians. Now the question rises that is it justified to invite politicians and officers from foreign countries. Our government is right in saying that India is suffering owing to some serious problems and the problems require immediate attention. But at the same time we should not rely on foreign companies to find their solutions. We have some means and ways in our own country to sort them out. But these ways and means don’t appear to the people who are sitting in the government as these DESI methods are not supposed to yield any bribes or cuts to our corrupt politicians. We have focused here on the issue why we should oppose FDI in retail. Our government appears in hurry to decide over seeds produced by foreign companies, expansion of foreign banks in India, land acquisition and bio-technology to benefit the corporate sector. These decisions are sure to have far reaching impact on our society and economy. We have been the followers of the path shown by our great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. These great leaders worked for building a nation on the line of our own culture and tradition. Our government’s decision has put us in a situation where we have to take firm decisions. Mahatma Gandhi had termed the ‘western consumerism’ as an evil. Are we going to be conquered by the evil civilization? We won’t let this happen. We will jointly work to defeat this evil and evolve a new, just and exploitation free social order which will be exemplary for the other countries of the world. With this hope, I call upon all the people of this country to come forward and join hands together to make this resolve a reality. Our government appears in hurry to decide over seeds produced by foreign companies, expansion of foreign banks in India, land acquisition and bio-technology to benefit the corporate sector. These decisions are sure to have far reaching impact on our society and economy. About three to four per cent people in India are suffering from this problem. It is caused due to irregular food behaviour and careless life style. According to a survey, in about 80 per cent cases, the patients of stone don’t feel any kind of pain in the beginning. But being careless about it can cause dangerous diseases like jaundice, cancer. This problem even could lead a patient to immediate death. Nowadays, stone in gall bladder is being treated by the help of laparoscopy, endoscope laser and shock waves. Actually formation of stone in gallbladder prevents the secretion of acidic juice from gall bladder to the intestine... Prema Rai S ...The normal reason behind the formation of stone in the gall bladder is irregularities in food habits, taking fat rich diet in much higher quantity than needed and taking very less amount of water. tone in gall bladder is a normal problem and one among every threefour people is suffering from this problem. Actually, a gall bladder is found in our intestine. It secretes acidic juices meant for digestion of food. Normally the diseases associated with our digestive system- Jaundice and cancer in gall bladder-begin when there is some problem in the secretion of these juices. But formation of stone in the gall-bladder is most important reason behind beginning of cancer in this particular part of the body. Actually stone prevents the secretion of acidic juice from gall bladder to the intestine. The normal reason behind the formation of stone in the gall bladder is irregularities in food habits, taking fat and high calorie rich diets in much higher quantity than needed and taking very less amount of water. Normally slow pain in the stomach indicates the onset of stone in the stomach. When you are carrying some heavy thing and climbing up on the stairs, you can feel pain in your stomach due to stone in the gall bladder. The pain is mild in the beginning. In some cases, the patient could suffer from fever. According to cancer specialist of Fortis hospital in Noida, Dr Amit Agarwal, “If a stone formed in the gall bladder is allowed to stay there for a long time, the chances of cancer increase. The size of the stone could also increase more than three cm. In this condition, there is no other option but to remove the gall bladder by surgery. Though, in 16&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 17 this situation, liver stars does the same function as the gall bladder was doing. In many people, the digestive system is badly affected after the surgery of gall bladder. Cancer is still considered as a deadly disease in India whereas in the western world, this disease is being treated as the way tuberculosis is being treated in India. Dr Amit Agarwal suggests that neoplasia should be used as a word for cancer. He argues that cancer is still a horrifying word for most of the people in India. Neoplacia is the word which is used for uncontrolled growth of cells in any part of the body except the growth of cells in nails and hair. When the growth of cell is dangerous in nature, it is called malignant neoplasia. But when the growth of cells is not so dangerous, then it is called benign neoplasia. Actually, it is a disease towards which mass awareness is still very less. Notably the cost for treatment of the disease is ten times more than the cost incurred to take the precautionary measures for preventing the disease. Therefore, the precaution to prevent the problem is more important. Never ignore the stone in one’s gall bladder. But now the situation has significantly changed. Nowadays, the use of IGRT for the treatment of cancer in gall bladder is very effective. Under this technique, the doctors conduct city scan, mark the affected part on the film and plan radiation for the affected areas. This protects the other parts from coming in contact with the radiation. January 2012&YOG SANDESH&19 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 20 Nature a stone are such creations, which are twindivided existences and have not been governed or covered by consciousness. They are themselves actively conscious, which are dream immersed or which are unaware of their four-fold objects like atraumatized human being. But being incapable of controlling their medium, they are unable to present an explicit sign of functioning of the body or mind. We should not stop at an incomplete possibility because latest research on psychology makes this possibility incontrovertible and offers explicit evidence. We know that humans, besides the allevident consciousness, there is a dream- like consciousness or sub-consciousness, which is active in an unconscious person who is either traumatized by a shock, or because of high potency of a drug or because of deep sleep or under the influence of hypnotism. This sub-consciousness is capable of cognizing which is not cognized by conscious mind and understands what conscious mind does not. And this also clearly remembers what conscious mind does not even bother to notice. What is it that is dormant in a conscious human being and conscious in sleeping one? Whose consciousness and flawless observation, when compared with memory and insight, is only an incomplete and momentary dream. Please note that full consciousness is not the result of gradual evolution. There is not a single gradually-developed, conscious creation, which makes it to remember and reiterate a few set of sounds, which seem trivial to a trained mind. This conscious creation can randomly solve problems, which a trained mind has left unnoticed. This conscious creation observes everything; understands everything and reiterates everything. So, this internal consciousness existed before the gradual development. A statement in Kathopanishada : Esha Supteshu Jagriti, means this is active among all who are dormant. This new psychological research is in its infancy and it is not in a state, where it can figure out what this conscious creation is. But by the knowledge attained through Yoga, we can certainly deduce that this internal consciousness is complete and Humans, besides the all-evident consciousness, there is a dream-like consciousness or sub-consciousness, which is active in an unconscious person either traumatized by a shock, or because of high potency of a drug or because of deep sleep or under the influence of hypnotism. This subconsciousness is capable of cognizing, which is not cognized by conscious mind and understands what conscious mind does not. And this also clearly remembers what conscious mind does not even bother to notice. Sri Arvind the case of an epileptic patient, one more astounding thing emerges that the body turns inanimate and inactive like a stone; it is not even bodily active like a tree but in such a state, mind, under its objects and its medium - body and four-fold objects is fully aware. Although body remains out of its active control and because of the same reason it is physically incapable to work on four-fold objects. Having such examples before us how can we claim that stones are inanimate? Our science claims, if there are no explicit signs of physical or conscious mental actions, there can not be any existence of body and mind. Based on this claim, science challenges the existence of mind in the tree or consciousness in the stone. Though, this claim of science has itself been proved wrong. Observing the unity in nature and all existent consciousness in the functioning of nature, a possibility or almost a certain possibility appears before us that a tree and In 20&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 21 governs the body and mind, 'Manomaya Pranasharira Neta.' In fact this is what regulates the gradual development of mind and activates it from inside and getting more and more control over the body, which is its medium. So that the body, which may become what it has not been so far and may form a flawless mechanism of evident consciousness. That creation is present in a tree and a stone as well. But it has not attained any evident form in the mind so far. It can only utilize its form for the development of life and active interaction between mind and body. So we see that though modern psychology is moving away from logical and intellectual conclusions yet depending upon facts, it is drawing itself towards truths, which have been propounded thousands of years ago by our Rishis. How did they reach those conclusions? Not through logical thinking, rather through Yoga. The hurdle that is mounted against science is that it is incapable of entering the subject of its research. And it depends upon the conclusions drawn from observations made from outside. Its cruel efforts on animals can not make up for the flaws. Yoga, by overcoming artificial hurdles, erected in the form of physical experience and ego, enables the observer to enter the object. It frees us from the influence of individual's experience and throws us into the stream of universal consciousness. It provides us unity with the universal mind and omniscient power by freeing us from individual's consciousness. That is the reason; our sages were able to observe the truth, the glances of which we can observe again. And that truth is that nature is an intellectual and purposeful power of the consciousness. That is Prajna Prasata Purani. Not only that, God resides in nature as an infinite and universal being over and above it. And that form is universal and God resides in nature over and above it as self- consciousness. And this consciousness oversees this complex and huge functioning of nature and enjoys it as well, besides taking them to a certain purpose. So, so far we have been able to form an opinion on that supreme power, which will elevate us from our nature to ultra-nature or beyond nature. It is the power of consciousness which expresses itself in the form of its functioning and follows the path appropriately to reach from one state to another and activates the functioning of our destination of our past and the presence of God in consciousness. Children's Nursery Modesty is the best trait of a man’s character Acharaya Satyanand 'Naishthik there used to live two brothers. One of them was extremely talented, simple, humble and peaceful person. He was easily bullied by others' anger and he would always sit at a place, where nobody is likely to ask him to stand up. The second brother was illiterate, extremely harsh and bitter to talk to. He would resort to violence at the minor provocation. Of the two brothers, the first one wherever he went for a purpose, people would help him out of their ways. These people would not even talk to the second one. So the second brother asked his brother, what is the key you own that you have harmonious relations with people; you are able to get your things done from everybody. These people do not even talk to me. The second brother replied, whoever is endowed with magnetic humility, fire seems water to such a person; ocean is like a river to him; a lion is like a deer to him; a snake to him is a garland and poison would turn into a shower of ambrosia. That is the only key, so you must also develop it, said the first brother to the second one. Once Parable : Pride is the biggest enemy of a person. Social-Cultural reasons It has been found that the disease is more predominant in some ancient societies, rural societies and developing societies. In rural societies, many women can be seen suffering form this ailment at the same time. In most of the cases in the rural areas, the impact of the disease is seen as the influence of ghosts or supernatural power on the sufferer. Reasons The ailment can be caused by following reasons Hereditary Its impact on direct kin is five percent. (Father and sons have least impact whereas the women relatives like mother and sisters have higher impact). Some scientists suggest that in most of the cases, the problem is caused due to the habit of the patient to imitate his or her relatives. Hereditary reasons are least responsible for the symptoms of the disease. Views of psychiatrists Psychiatrists suggest that some suppressed desire, mental tension and anxiety are the reasons behind the problem. Hysteria helps the patients to get rid of the mental anxiety and he is also able to draw the attention of others. The mindset of the person suffering from hysteria is different from those who pretend to be ill. Actually who pretend to be ill are always conscious but those who suffer from hysteria are not conscious of the situation at the time of the attack of the disease. The symptoms of this disease can be divided in following parts: Symptoms of hysteria which change frequently This form of hysteria shows the symptoms like paralysis, epilepsy, unconsciousness, blindness, weakness of muscles, shaking of hands, vomiting, pain in head and stomach, lack of sensation in any part of body, problem in discharging urine, constipation, difficulty in swallowing meal, suffocation and hiccups. Dissociative hysteria The symptoms of this form of hysteria are- weakness of memory power, somnambulism, bedlamite crying and unconsciousness. Actually the patient takes short but frequent breath which leads to imbalance in the composition of blood which affects the consciousness of the patient. He starts behaving as if he is under impression of some ghost or supernatural power. In children, the symptoms appear in the form of suffocation, stomach-ache and headache. Such children show such symptoms when they find some tense or disturbing ambience in the family. In women, the symptoms of hysteria appear when they feel difficulty in domestic work or anxiety about their prospective sex life and marital life. It has been found that the disease is more predominant in some ancient societies, rural societies and developing societies. Treatment Normally patients of hysteria are not admitted in the hospitals and are kept at home. But this could increase the problem and it could continue for a long time. Domestic ambience is also not good for the patient. The patients should be kept away from their relatives so that they could forget the problems associated with their family life. Many psychiatrists say that a hardening but sympathetic behaviour of doctors in the hospital helps a patient to recuperate without any medicine. Many times a treatment of hypnotism by doctors has been found very effective. There are some medicines suggested by a doctor helps the patients to recuperate from this ailment. Many times scolding, slamming of patients by the doctors helps to recuperate. If such symptoms are evident, one should understand that secretion from womb and miscarriage could happen. Why miscarriage takes place untimely It takes place when unnecessary jerk is incurred by the body, the way a wounded fruit on tree falls down. Problems caused by change in place of the embryo When the embryo changes its place, this development causes a kind of excitement in kidney and other parts in the stomach. It causes pain in ribs, backache, inflates the stomach and problems in discharging urine. All these are the symptoms which also take place at the time of miscarriage. Treatment for miscarriage or secretion from womb When the chances of such things are sensed by a doctor, he should make all possible efforts to protect the embryo. Regular medicines should be advised to the pregnant lady for a few months to protect her embryo. Even after all efforts, the secretion doesn't stop and the life of the lady is endangered, then she should be given the medicines which will cause miscarriage and destroy the embryo to save her life. Peel or bark of Aparajita plant should be crushed and its juice should be added with goat milk and be given to the pregnant woman. This prevents miscarriage. n Boil the saraca indica plant's bark in water and filter the water and added it with Lodha bark and karnel of Kamal gatta. This should be added in milk and administered to a pregnant woman in the morning and evening. It also minimises the possibility of miscarriage. n If miscarriage takes place then the mixture of the juices of the roots of Ashwagandha and Shwet Katori in equal quantity of 10 gm each should be given to the patients from first month to fifth month every day. It prevents the problem. n The lady suffers from the problem of secretion from womb or miscarriage, she should be administered a preparation of half kg carrot juice added with half kg goat milk and boiled on slow flame. when very less amount is left after burning, give twice or thrice of this preparation to the patient every day for next eight months of pregnancy. n When the pregnant lady suffers from secretion of blood, then take five gram of white grass juice and added it to Swarnamakshik bhasma and Mukta Shukti Bhashma, half Ratti of the latter two ingredients. Administer the preparation twice a day to the patient. It will prevent the problem of miscarriage. n Secretion from womb and miscarriage Miscarriage during pregnancy is possible when the pregnant lady indulges in sex, movement, riding on elephant or horse, hard labour, excessive pressure on body, jumping, holding fast, indigestion or eating and drinking something which can cause abortion. Differences between secretion from womb andmiscarriage Till fourth month of pregnancy, the blood which secrets from the womb is a womb secretion while the blood which secrets after fifth or sixth month, is called miscarriage. 26&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 27 ÐÐ Chandogya Upanishad ÐÐ Tuhangira udgeethamupasamchakra Etum Evangirasam manyantenganam yadrasah …II10II Angirasa chanted 'Omkara' considering prana that is seated in mouth as the symbol of UDGEETHA. Here that 'Spirtual' description is given in the adoration of Omkara, which has a profound secret in it in controlling the senses of body. 'Adhyatma' in Upanishads is that Supreme soul, which takes a form of a body, an entity. Here is the description of that supreme soul. Bhayasya tamaso bhavati ya Evam veda II1II And now in the view point of deities reveals the great secret of the worship of Omkara, which is begun with the description os 'Adhi daivata'. The body has a symbol for Udgeetha, that is 'Prana'. And the infinite universe has a symbol for Udgeetha, that is the 'Sun', who lights up. Hence worship him. Worship Prana, the life force is selfless, which enlivens the body. Worship the 'Sun', who glows the whole world by lighting up himself. Understand the physical form of Omkara and worship it. The rising Sun is the physical form of Omkara, hence worship him. The rising Sun is just like the Singer, who sings the desires of the people. He expels the the physical darkness and also psychological fear. One who believes the 'Sun' as the symbol of Udgeetha, he would drives out the terror and darkness. II1II Samana u evayam chasow choshnodyamushnosow swara IteemamAchakshate swara iti pratyAswara ityamum. Tasmadwa Etimimamamum chodgeethamupaseetha . II2II 'Prana' and 'Sun' - both are the same. This 'Prana', the life force is heat and it produces heat. That 'Sun' is also heat and he heats the whole world. This 'Prana' is called 'Swara'. That 'Sun' is called both 'Swara' and 'Pratyaswara'. 'Swara' means 'that which goes out', that means, the spirit is goes out when the life force is gone. And it never comes back in that body. 'Pratyaswar' means, 'that which comes back'. The 'Sun' is 'Swara' and he definitely goes out. But 'pratyaswar' is also there. And it comes back. If the sun sets, he rises also. Hence, same credence should be given to all these three powers, i.e., 'Prana', 'Sun' and 'Udgeetha' and adore them. Atha khalu vyanamevodgeethamupaseeta. Yadwai pranithi sa PraNo yadapanini sopanah. The breathe that goes inside, should be considered as 'Prana', and the breathe that goes out is 'Apana'. Apana unites 'Prana' and 'Apana'. The 'Prana' which suppresses breathe inside is called 'Vyana'. This 'Vyana' only is 'Speech'. So, when one does not inhale and does not exhale, then it takes the form of 'Speech'. Ya vAksa ruk. Therefore it is called 'Richa'. And it is chanted when neither 'prana' enters inside nor 'Apana' is pushed outside. Richa is the 'Saama' scripture. Hence when Saama veda is sung, prana neither goes inside nor Apana is expelled outside. 'Saama' is 'Udgeetha'. He wanted his son to learn English and lead a western life style. Narendra was very intelligent since his early days but at the same time he had a passion to get access to almighty. To serve this purpose, he visited to Brahmo Samaj, but could not get the peace he was craving for. When he was just 25, he took to ascetic way of life and began wearing saffron cloths, the way saints are dressed. Thereafter, he visited across the country on foot. Swami vivekananda established the significance of indian spiritualism in europe and america Special on the birthday anniversary of Swami Vivekananda Sunita Poddar International Yoga Convener and trustee of Patanjali Yogapeeth Trust (UK) world religious conference was being held in Chicago city of USA in 1893. Swami Vivekananda joined the conference as a representative from India. It was those days when British ruled India and Europeans and Americans had a disdainful attitude towards India. Many people were reluctant to allot time to Swami Vivakananda to deliver a speech at the conference. An American professor helped him to get some time allotted for speech. At the end, when they listen to Swamiji, they were highly fascinated by this thoughts. Americans offered a warm welcome to Swamiji. His miraculous speech on Indian spiritualism mesmerized the people of America. A large number of people became his follower. Swamiji stayed in America for three years and enlightened the Americans on the subjects like Indian spiritualism and philosophy. Seeing his effective and fascinating oratory, American media called him a cyclonic Hindu. Swamiji proved it that in the absence of spiritualism and Indian philosophy, the world will become like an orphaned. He set up so many branches of Ramkrishna Mission. Many American scholars joined him as his students. Swamiji departed from this world on 4th July 1902. He A always presented himself as a servant of a common man. He always worked for the glorification of India. Swamiji had devoted all his life in the service of his mentor Swami Ram Krishna Paramhans. During last days of his guru Paramhansji, Vivekananda engaged himself to serve for Paramhansji. He didn’t care for his family and his own food. His mentor’s condition was pathetic owing to ailment. Once his another fellow showed disgust towards the deteriorating condition of their Guru Paramhansji. Vivekajanda didn’t like it and taught him the lesson about the importance of one’s guru in his life. Vivekananda had rendered all his time in the service of his guru. He never showed hesitation in cleaning cough and blood clot coughed out by Paramhansji. It was his exemplary devotion for his Guru which made him the greatest follower of Ram Krishna Paramhanas. His devotion for his mentor gave him enormous strength to enlighten the world community about Indian spiritualism and philosophy. His contribution to spread the concept of Vedanta and Yoga across the world will always be remembered. 28&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:53 Page 29 Patanjali Hum Tera Karte Abhinandan Dr Vikram Alankar Jayati Patanjali Yogpeeth, hum karte tera Abhinandan, Tera Nirmal Gyan Jyotirmay, Kan-Kan Mahake jaise chandan. According to a report, about 82 percent teenagers spend from 14 to 16 hours every week with computers and web portals to play video games. About 84 percent of these children are crazy for violent games. Besides, they also have inclination towards pornography and violent films. Craze ction and violence shown in the films have a very strong impact on the soft minds of our children. In almost all these video games, a here fights with villains to complete his mission. Such contents cause deformities in our children’s mind. The mind is filled with violence and anger, which destroy the positivist of a child’s mind, and they are caught by the problems like tension and depression at a very early age. Video games, which happen to be a means for time pass, later become a bad addiction. In short, we can say that video games promote violent instincts in our children. Dr Sameer Parikh, the head of psychiatric department of New Delhi’s Max care, recently conducted a research on growing violent instincts among children. His report suggested that films on violent theme promote our children to carry deadly firearms. It further said that children between 14 to 17 years of age group are crazy for violence based video games and films. A recent research conducted in USA suggests that the children who suffered torture and humiliation at a very early age, carried the impact of such incidents for a very long period in their life. Loneliness of children make them dependent on violent video films. In today’s fast changing world, people are busy in earning money. They don’t have time to share with their children. This thing turn the children towards unhealthy entertainment like violence based video games and porn films. For the last two decades, events like ‘Play Day’ are being organized to promote the interest for healthy sports and games among children. Games and sports are not just important for a child’s mental and physical strength, but it is also important for promoting good behavior and manners in them. Absence of sports, which need physical labour, is a matter of grave concern. Unlike Britain and USA, we don’t have any policy to promote sports among children. Britain adhered to a UN convention in this regard in 1991. Play day campaign is a part of this move to ensure healthy development of children. It is mandatory for all school going children in Britain to participant in sports events. The UN convention meant for healthy growth of children, talks about promoting sports, ensuring sufficient rest and constructive habits in children. India also needs the promotion of such habits in children. Now in India, TV channels, Internet and web sites are catering unhealthy programmes based on sex and violence, which has caused tension and depression in our children. Our children are learning bad habits from such programmes. Children are very innocent. One can see the glimpses of almighty in them… to save the body, mind and sole of our children from the impurity has to be our prime concern. Purity and innocence are the two most important elements in a child. It is the responsibility of parents at home and of the teachers at schools to keep the children away from violence based video games and films and ensure creativity in children. It is also wrong on parts of parents to impose unnecessary restrictions on their children. Just try to ensure natural growth in your children. It will promote the good abilities like decisiveness, positive approach towards life in your children. Let you children learn good habits, which ensure discipline in your children. Inculcate the thoughts in you children like global fraternity and promote in them the ideas, which will strengthen unity in family and society. But he is widely know as a great freedom fighter. Lalaji was born on 28 Janury, 1868, in Monga district’s Dudhike village of Punjab. His father Sri Lala Radha Kishan Azad was an Urdu teacher in a government school. His mother Gulab Devi was a religious lady Mukesh Agarwal (Banarasi) L alaji was recognized for his brilliant mind even when he was a child. Despite financial constraints, he earned higher education. After successfully qualifying the entrance tests for Calcutta University and Punjab University, he joined Lahore Government College as a student of law. But owing to poor financial condition of his family, his education was badly affected for two years. But the time he spent in Lahore proved to be a milestone in his life because his future course of action was shaped during his stay in this city. He undertook a comprehensive study of Indian History and learnt about the magnificent past of the people of India. He was moved after knowing about the greatness of ancient Indian culture and civilization. This was the time when the seeds of patriotism and a feeling to serve the nation were sowed in his heart. During his studies as a student of law, he came in contact with Lala Hansrajji and Pandit Guruduttji, the two great revolutionaries of their time. All the three joined Arya Samaj in 1882. Those days, Arya Samaj was engaged in the various activities of social reforms and gaining popularity among youths of Punjab. In 1885, Lalaji passed LLB examination in 2nd class from Lahore’s government college and started his practice as a law professional form Hisar. The activities of Arya Samaj were aimed at three worksSocial reforms, rise of Hinduism and expansion of education. Most of the times he had been engaged in social activities assigned by Arya Samaj. This thing earned him a lot of fame and he got unopposed elected for Hisar Municipality. Lalaji had an intense desire to see India as an independent nation. when he was just 23 years old in 1888, the intense feeling of patriotism in his heart led him to join politics besides of social activities. When he attended the Allahabad session of Congress with a delegation from Punjab, he received by the representatives present there with a warm welcome. He mesmerized the audiences present at there by his magnificent oratory skill in Urdu. Soon he emerged as a prominent leader of Congress. In 1892, Lalaji shifted from Hisar to Lahore to join Punjab High Court as a counsel. Here too, he continued with his social and political activities. He also continued his mission to influence the masses by the means of writing. He translated and published the biographies of the great men like Chhatrapati Shivaji, Swami Dayananda, heroes of the unification of Italy- Mazzini and Garibaldi. These writings inspired the people of India to strive for the freedom of this country from British rule.Lalaji never heisted to serve for social causes. When the Central Province was badly hit by drought in 1896, he immediately rushed to the affected areas and did exemplary work to help the needy people. Christian missionaries were also working there but these missionaries helped only those who agreed to convert to Christianity. Then Lalaji helped people without any terms and condition. At a stage when he found that his practice as a law professional was causing hindrance in his social and political mission, he shunned his practice and rendered all his time for social and political activities. When the several areas in Punjab, Rajasthan and Central Province were hit by drought and Kangra district of present Himachal Pradesh was hit by earthquake, Lalaji did exemplary work to help the affected people. He made a great contribution in India’s freedom struggle. He stressed on constructive work, nation building and dependency on self to be adopted as a way of working in the Indian National Congress. He was supporter of the aggressive ideas of Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal for the freedom of India. Later, the three became famous as Lal_Bal-Pal. Liberal Congress members were in favour of seeking the blessings of British rulers. But Lalaji was of the view that freedom doesn’t come by pleadings or prayers. He stressed on struggle and sacrifice for the freedom of India. At the time of the division of Bengal, he also joined the Swadeshi and Swaraj movement against the British rulers with great enthusiasm. When a rift erupted within the Congress in 1906, he worked as a mediator to fill the rift between the two factions. In 1907, Bal Gangadhar Tilak wanted to propose the name of Lalaji for the presidentship of Congress, but sensing the possibility of conflict, Lalaji avoided his nomination. Lalaji favoured to set up an international organization to move the world community in favour of India’s freedom and also to highlight the atrocities and exploitation of British rule at the global level. He visited Britain in 1914. From here he visited to USA where he set up ‘Indian Home League Society of America’ and wrote a book titled ‘Young India’. But British government in India banned this book. After the end of first World War, Lalaji returned back to India. He led the noncooperation movement in Punjab to protest against the Jalianwal Bagh massacre. He was arrested many times and sent to jails but never relented his efforts. When Gandhiji revoked non-cooperation movement after the Chauri-Chaura incident, this decision disappointed Lalaji. He was elected to Central Assembly in 1925. Leprosy is a contagious and infectious disease and in Ayurveda also, similar definition has been given. `Kushtham jawarshcha shoshacha, netrabhivyand eva cha. Aupsargik Rogacha Sankramanti naratram`. Leprosy develops in a longer period, 1 to 7 years. In comparison to elderly persons, children and youths are more prone to leprosy disease. Opposite meals Opposite meal could be a major reason for leprosy. The impurities get collected in the body and cause leprosy at a later stage. Some of the examples of opposite character meal are as follows. Consumption of fish with milk Consumption of acid or sour fruit or juice after or before taking milk. Taking radish or green vegetables along with milk. Salt along with milk, lentil with radish, butter with radish. Banana with curd, clarified butter (ghee) in copper vassal. Lentil, jaggery (gur) with honey. Liquor, curd, honey with some hot character edible item. Honey, clarified butter (ghee), fat and oil in equal amount are opposite character foods. 30th January Special on leprosy eradication day More examples of opposite character activities Exercise after taking meals. Sitting under intense sun shine and sleep in day. Taking bath after coming from intense heat condition or hard labor and exercise, sex soon after taking food, sex with woman in menstrual period, and to stop vomiting, all are examples of Reasons for leprosy Main reasons behind leprosy are irregular life-style, eating habits against nature and involvement in sinner activities. Many ancient 36&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:54 Page 37 activities causing leprosy. Also, insult to `gurus`, brahimns, sadhus and their killings, to indulge in non-religious activities, to usurp others money, killing of woman and previous birth sins are also reasons for leprosy. Considering scientific reasons opposite meals cause allergy, which could be a major cause for leprosy. Although, there is no direct connection in opposite meal and leprosy but it is possible that it decreases resistance power of the body. Recently, Dr Tripti Jain of Medical Science department, Kashi Hindu University,Varanasi gave honey and ghee in equal amount to mice and skin diseases developed in them. In Ayurveda, leprosy has been beautifully described as how it transmits from one person to another. `Prasardayam gatra sansparshani shawashat saha bhojnat. Ekshamyasannachhavavastra malyanulepat`. Means sex, physical touch, in contact with disease, eating in same utensils, sleeping on same bed, regularly sitting in one posture, leprosy, fever, tuberculosis, conjunctivitis and other skin related diseases transmit from one person to another. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, people perform holy dip in sacred rivers, worship lord Surya and offer alms. There is also age-old tradition of kite-flying on this occasion. Lord Surya is revered as Vishwa-Devata (God of the world). Vedas and Purans also describe at length about the importance of Surya Upasana. This tradition is being followed since the Rig-Vedic age. Bhavishyavetta Puran tells about a temple built by Shamb, the son of lord Krishna and Jamvanti at the bank of Sindhu (Indus river). Sun stays for 30 days in each of the sun-signs. Sankranti period is the period when there is a very short span of time between the sun and two other sun-signs. This short duration is considered as very important for holy bath, prayer to almighty and offering alms. Kark and Makar are the most important among the 12 and there is a gap of six months between the two. On the day of Sankranti, the position of sun shifts from Dakshinayan (Southward) towards Uttarayana (Northward). On the day of Kark Sankranti, the position of sun shifts from Uttarayana to Dakshinayana. When the sun becomes Uttarayana, it is considered as very auspicious and the day is considered as the day of deities. Dakshinayana is considered as night of the deities. Kark Sankranti fall in Ashadh month while Makar Sankaranti comes on 14th January. Sankranti is considered as the symbol of the might of lord Surya or Sun. Seven goddesses are considered as the symbols of this might. The seven goddesses are- Manda, Mandakini, Dhavankshi, Ghora, Mandodari, Rakshasi and Nidhata. To worship the goddess Sankranti, a ritual is performed in which a Ghant is covered with red cloth and a symbol of lotus is made of rice grains. The idol of lord Surya is kept in the middle. Then rituals and invocation begins. When the sun shifts his position and enters in Kumbh, Vrishchik, Vrishabh and Sinh, it is called Vishnupadi Sankranti while when the sun enters in Kanya, Dhanu, Meen and Mithun, it is called Bhadshiti Sankranti. When the Sun enters in Mesh and Tula Sun-signs, it is called Vishuvat Sankranti. Kark Sankranti is called Yamayan and Makar Sankranti is called Soumyayan Sankranti. It is an age old tradition in various parts of India to eat and offer the laddus made of Til (sesame seed) and Gud (jaggery). It is important because these two ingredients are considered as good for health. In Uttar Pradesh, this festival is known as Khichari. Women in the states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat make up their beauty with turmeric and Kumkum. In south India, this festival is celebrated as Pongal. Vanar-Raj Sugriva and Karna, famous for his sacrifices in Mahabharat, are also said to be the sons of lord Surya. Arun, the elder brother of Pakshi-Raj (King of birds) Garud, is said to be the Sarathi (driver) of the chariot of lord Surya which is drawn by seven horses. The seven horses represent the seven colours of Sunlight. Makar-Sankranti symbolizes the onset of summer season. Days are long and nights are short in summer. Hemant season ends and Shishir season begins with Makar-Sankranti. At Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur, UP, the festival of MakarSankranti is being celebrated since long. There is a legend associated with the celebration of this festival at this temple. As legend goes, once Gorakhnathji Maharaj went to the place of Jwaladevi while campaigning for Yoga. Jwaladevi requested him for his stay at her place. But Gorakhnathji said that he couldn’t take the food prepared at there because Tamasi food was prepared there. He advised to beg grains to prepare Khichadi which he could have taken. Jwaladevi put a bowl on the Chulha (country made stove) and started waiting for the return of Gorakhnathji Maharaj. But he didn’t return. He went to Gorakhpur and sat on meditation at the place where his temple is located. His devotees built a hut at the place and local residents began filling his pot with Khichadi. Since then, a tradition of offering Khichadi at Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur city began. Since then a Khichadi Mela is organized at the place which goes for a month every year. Sankranti is considered as the symbol of the might of lord Surya or Sun. If I can dodge the British intelligence agents to can come here, the same I can do with the Germans and go out of this country. T hese daring words of Netaji had left the German officer stunned. Somehow, Hitler came to learn about this incident and he didn’t feel bad but he praised the courage and straightforwardness of Netaji. When the two leaders met, Hitler honoured him for his daring nature and offered him a warm welcome. Bose also humbly greeted Hitler and requested him that Indian Mission in Germany will be completely free from the interference of German authorities. Netaji further added, “All the people of Indian origin living in Europe will be considered as a member of this organization. The Indians who have been arrested here owing to their inclination towards communism should be released and be allowed to join this organization.” Hitler happily agreed to all these conditions laid down by Netaji and IndoGerman relationship moved forward to strive for the freedom of India. The biggest contribution of Netaji is that he moved the people of this country especially the youths for freedom and stimulated the people of Indian origin living abroad to strive to win independence for India. Revolt by personnel of Indian navy in 1946, was triggered by Indian National Army. Wherever the personnel of Indian armed forces visited in the world after registering victory for British rulers, people passed sarcastic comments for fighting against their own people. People sited the example of INA who were fighting against the British army to win the freedom for their motherland. Such comments moved the feelings of the personnel of Indians who fought for British rulers and decided to work for their own motherland. They installed the portraits of Netaji on the ships of British navy and after returning back home, they collected funds for the officers of INA who were being prosecuted by the British government. They also fought against their British colleagues in the streets of Bombay. When British officers stopped the supply of food to the ships under the control of Indian personnel, the beggars of Bombay collected funds and dispatched boats loaded with food and sweets for the Indian personnel of British navy. Following the revolt in Indian navy, the Indian staffs in British army and air force also toed the same line. Even after quelling the Quit India movement and securing victory in the Second World War, British rulers were forced to hand over the power to the people of India. The announcement of this effect was made in the British Parliament by then Prime Minister Clement Richard Attlee. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose relentlessly fought for the independence of India. His contribution in India’s freedom struggle is exemplary. Many people consider it as awakening of sixth sense. But in fact it is the inner voice of our soul and conscience, which makes us aware towards the positive and simultaneously alert towards the negativity, hidden in the probable decision. It is not that inner voice of conscience echoes on occasions but before any decision it always issue alerts but we ignore it. In Listen conscience’s voice T Sunita Poddar International Yoga Convener and trustee of Patanjali Yogapeeth Trust (UK) he inner voice does not distinguish between men and women but in comparison to men, women are insensitive towards the inner voice. Had they been more sensitive towards inner voice, they would able to perform their duty and responsibility in better manner. Women are pivotal point for the society, family and home and if they consider conscience voice and take steps accordingly, they most of the problems in daily life would be solved to larger extent, making their present and future more happy and peaceful. But now question arises, what actually is the conscience or its voice? Does everybody hear it? We all know the reply but due to repeated ignorance to the inner voice, it does not reach us. Conscience is not a loud sound but a sensation, originating from the inner conscience, making good efforts to show right and justified route, The inner voice alerts us towards the aim and objective of the life. It is that internal power, which differentiates between good and bad. It is natural, constructive and could be construed as a miracle. It develops at very minute level. The inner voice could be said as an integral part of the soul, which helps in taking right decision at the time of confusion. Many times, after some incident, we say while analyzing the result, that I had inkling that the same result would come. This inkling is the inner voice of the soul, which needed to be developed. The first point to develop inner voice is to listen it, while taking decisions of lesser importance. Then analyze the decision properly and later start taking decisions on increasing importance based on the inner voice. When you listen and follow the instructions of inner voice, it associates you with a bigger area of knowledge. This enables you to analyze different situations of the life and take decisions accordingly. The inner voice helps us getting peace. The inner voice of conscience is not a loud sound but it is a sunlight emerging from heart and soul and always tries to show the right path. The inner voice is an echo alerting towards the right aims and objectives of the life. 44&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:54 Page 45 It ends negativity prevailing in mind and soul and enhances self-confidence and cordiality. It we practice listening inner voice, the dreams of the life would be realized. For constructive spiritual life, inner voice is an essential gradient. During up-bringing of infants, mothers might have observed that many times, child alerts despite that his brain had not developed at that stage. The scientific findings have certified that during childhood, the inner voice is more sensitive and active but as we grow-up and with the development of the brain, our dependency on inner voice reduces. We tend to ignore inner voice. In fact we make different means to make body active and mobile in our daily life and similar efforts should be made to listen inner voice in daily life. Whenever the question arises in our soul that actually what we want in our life, we shall hear the sensation of the inner voice. This feel would be a reason to take better and effective decisions in personal, social and family life. We all have the ability to hear, see and feel and if it is associated with the inner voice, each decision of the life would bring happiness. Learned persons have already said that when you pray almighty, you are actually taking orders from the super power. The ability of realization of a thing is actually associated with the alertness of the inner voice. There is no loud direction emanating from the inner voice but before any decision, the inner voice alerts us and try to show right path. The social circumstances teach us to be more logical and use our brain. But if you only use brain, you could be deterred with information, generating from the heart and soul. Thus, heart is another brain and many times its voice saves us from upcoming troubles. If we consider inner voice of heart along with brain in taking any decision, the mix would give best results and you could easily understand, as what is better. The great scientist Albert Einstein had said that his inventions were no more than better anticipation. Remember that your inner voice would never be wrong, though, your interpretation could be wrong. Follow inner voice, whenever it echoes. Social circumstanc es teach us to be reasonable and logical, using our brain. But if you utilize only brain, you could loose important information , emanating from the heart and soul. Sacred and spiritual thoughts give us pleasure like abloom flower while negative thoughts give tension and pressure. Millions of people in this world experience tension due to various reasons. Tension affects human being physically and psychologically. In many parts of the world, thousands of people take leave from their work due to tension. In Australia Public Service Commission, as compared to 1989-90, the cases of tension oriented diseases have almost doubled and every year, the number is mounting by 20 percent. Our T here are many means for stress management and a few of which are mesmerism, allopathic medicine, ayurvedic medicine, yoga, training and biofeedback. Ayurveda doesn't talk merely about healthy life but it offers the solution to all problems in our life like- physical, emotional, psychological, family-related social and spiritual. It teaches us how to keep healthy and disease free. Ayurveda is an ocean of knowledge. Dr. Manohar Bhandari, MBBS, MD. A yurveda is the sub-section of Atharva Veda, one of the four Vedas. It is described in Atharva Veda that for the welfare of mankind, lord Brahma created one lakh hymns which are collectively called Ayurveda. The great scholars like- Acharya Charak, Bagbhatt, Maharshi Sushrut, Divodas, Dhanvantari, Jeevak Vaidya, Madhavkar, Agnvesh, Sharangdhar, Bhavmishra, Nagarjuna- played an important role to popularize Ayurveda. It is a great fact that most of the scientific findings and researches are basically in accordance with the principles of Ayurveda. The scholars of Ayurveda went through research, personal experiences and perseverance, and described about the importance of the every aspect of our daily activities like when to wake up, what to think at the time of waking up, which direction one should sit while discharging excrements in the morning and in the evening. Where to discharge the excrements, when to wash mouth and the parts of which tree should be used for mouthwash. It has also been told that how and when one should do the mouthwash. Ayurveda also talks about what kind of water should be used for cleaning eyes, when to do physical exercises and how much. When should we cut our hair, nail, when to shave beards etc, have also been described in Ayurveda. Which kind of oil should be applied on the body in which season… how to take bath… what kind of land one should choose for bath, in which circumstances one should not take bath, etc have also been described in Ayurveda. Ayurveda tells that oil should not be applied in wet hair. What kind of fabric should be put on the body in which particular season, the importance of flowers and jewelry… all these things have also been described in Ayurveda. It also tells about the importance of Pranayama, Surya-Upasana, Sandhya-Upasana, why should one use Khadaun (slipper made of wood), how much water should be taken at different stages of taking meal… what to The scholars of Ayurveda went through research, personal experiences and perseveranc e, and described about the importance of the every aspect of our daily activities. 48&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:54 Page 49 do after having finished the meal… what kind of bed should be used. Many of the instructions of Ayurveda are consistent with the modern scientific principles and it has been proved by western scientists. The Ayurvedic instructions about the meal to be taken are really incredible. These instructions reflect widely on timing of meal, place of kitchen, type of utensils for preparing meal. These instructions are scientifically proven and very conducive to our health. Scholars of Ayurveda were aware of the nature of the digestive juices secreted inside the body by various digestive organs. Some years back a report was published by an international news agency which was based on the findings of famous US scientist Dr Thamos Thomas Jefferson. This report confirmed age old Ayurvedic instruction that laying leftward after having taken meal is good for health. Even countryside people in India are aware of this fact for many centuries. Four decades back, western scientists concluded that the sleeping position of keeping one's head in north and feet in south causes cardiac problems and restless sleep. This sleeping position also causes anxiety. Ancient Ayurvedic science has instructed to avoid this position while sleeping. Our Ayurvedic scientists were not only experts of life science but they were also masters of the movement of planets and stars and their impact on human health. On the basis of this knowledge, they instructed about the position of kitchen, dining room, entrance etc in the house. Some years back, some western scientists reached to the conclusion that a person should sit in a relaxed position while taking meal. Ayurveda scholars like Maharshi Charka and Sushrut have also expressed that meal is center of all human activities. That is why a man should take meal in optimum quantity and according to the requirement of time. While taking meal, a person should sit on a plain surface in a relaxed position. The place has to be clean and having good smells. One should wear comfortable cloths with happy mind. Before beginning to ear, the feet must have been washed. The face of the person who is eating food has to be in either north direction or in the east. By following these rules of Ayurveda while taking meal, one can live for hundred years with good health. One the basis of their causes, the diseases have been divided into four categories in Ayurveda. First, those generated owing to ill food behaviour, second because of emotional reasons like- greed, illusion, envy and anger, thirdcaused by attack on a person, fourth- due to natural reasons like birth, death. Water, air climatic conditions etc cause infectious diseases which has been described in detail in Scholars of Ayurveda were aware of the nature of the digestive juices secreted inside the body by various digestive organs. According to Sushrut Sanhita, those who use contaminated water are gripped by the diseases like-swelling, jaundice, skin-diseases, indigestion, respiratory problems, cold, and tumor in the stomach. In case of surgery, Sushrut Sanhita has been very significant. It has detailed description of all organs- big and small. Ateraya Brahman and Shatpat Brahman also give a good information of anatomy. Descriptions about planting artificial limbs and eyes have also been found. About 180 kind of instruments were used during Sushrut era to carry out operation. It has talked in detail about operation of various diseases. It also describes about the operating a pregnant lady to bring the child out of womb. Even methods of plastic and cosmetic surgery have also been talked in detail. Even western medical science recognizes the method of plastic surgery as Indian method in which the wounds and marks on nose are healed with the help of the flesh taken out of some parts of foot. In his book titled Wound Care, Dr. Bernard Knight has acknowledged that methods of surgery in India were well developed even before the Christ era. He has recognized Maharshi Sushrut as the father of surgery. In 'Synopsis of Ayurveda', a work of life science scholars from several countries of the world has recognized the this particular importance of Ayurvedic science. Noted scientist Dr M Nagmavadi of Tehran University claims that Sushrut Sanhita was famous even in ancient Arab world as 'Kitab-e-Susruv'. He further claims that if today's world agrees to adopt Ayurveda, it will change the face of the medical science across the world. We have numerous instances of medical operations in ancient India which are considered highly complicated and sensitive work. Such instances areTransplantation of the head of lord Ganesha, the son of lord Shiva and goddess Parvati, King Alerka donated his eyes to a blind Brahmin, the sperm which developed in plant leaf and later born as Guru Drona (example of test tube baby). Arjuna's son Abhimanyu learnt the art of breaking Chakravyuh when he was in the womb of his mother. This incident signifies that the people in ancient India were aware of the various activities of a child before birth. The fading significance of Ayurveda is only because of the fact that people nowadays are forgetting the significance of Ayurveda due to glare of western allopathic method of treatment. Ayurveda is a purely scientific method of living. It is high time to provide knowledge of Ayurvedic method of treatment to the students of MBBS in India because Ayurveda has the accurate methods for the treatment of diseases. To provide medical facilities to every citizen of this country, we will have to revive the Ayurvedic science. This will have to be done by joint efforts of all political groups, social groups. n 50&YOG SANDESH&January 2012 YS-JANUARY-ENG-2.qxd 29-12-2011 15:54 Page 51 January 05: Foundation Day Philosophy, principles and aims of Bharat Swabhiman the welfare of humanity and the country, Yogrishi Swami Ramdevji Maharaj has started 'Bharat Swabhimaan Movement'. But Yogrishi Swami Ramdev has associated Yoga with the health of a common man and since then many people have got rid of various curable and even incurable diseases in the history of medical science. I am a resident of Chhattisgarh and have reduced 50 kg weight in just four months after performing yoga exercises. I am Tarun Patel, 21 years and living in Baghod village in Janjgir Champa district. My weight was 150 kgs, which has caused various problems. I had pain in ankles, besides breathing problem and blood pressure. On advice of others, I stopped eating cooked and prepared edibles in market. I also started eating `daliya` of Patanjali Yogpeeth and did Pranayam. It benefited me and soon I made it routine. On being encouraged I took admission in BA, Yoga Science in Patanjali University. And joining Patanjali Yogpeeth was the turning point of my life. I have regulated my life style and diet and as a result in just four months, lost around 50 kg of weight. Though, I am still over-weight but surely, it would be reduced. I am thankful to Swamiji Maharaj and grateful to my teachers, who encouraged me to take right step. Workshop: Participants attending Red Ribbon workshop in Patanjali University.
