In most countries, several years of training in a university (usually 4-8) and some practical experience working with actual patients' dentition are required to become a qualified dentist. Modern Indian dentists earn the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree (B.D.S.), which requires four years of study and one year of internship. This degree is overseen by the Dental Council of India. Tution Fee structure in private Medical Colleges 1. In pursuance of Medical Council of India (Norms and Guidelines for fee and Guidelines for admission in Medical College, Regulations 1994, the Central Govt. vide its letter dated 15.5.1997 fixed the following upper ceiling of fee for merit and payment seats in private medical college, valid for 3 years 2.Payment Seats : An amount of Rs. 1.10 lakhs per student per annum shall be payable as fee. Out of this amount a sum of Rs.20,000/- per student, per annum (fixed) in case of colleges which do not have their own hospital facilities, and Rs. 7,000/- per student per annum (fixed) in case of colleges having partial hospital facilities will be paid back to the Govt./ authority running the hospital utilised by such medical colleges. Free / Merit Seats : Rs.13,000/- per student per annum shall be payable as fees. 2. The Central Govt. has considered the various aspects of the matter and has decided that the fees for merit/payment seats in private medical/dental colleges, as also the payments to be made to the attached hospitals, be increased by 15 per cent over the fees fixed in 1997, as spelt out in para 1 above. The revised fees leviable in each State within that ceiling, will be notified by the State Governments. Creating a country imbued with a scientific culture was Jawaharlal Nehru's dream, and immediately after independence he prepared a grand design to achieve it. Among the temples of modern India which he designed, was a centre of excellence in the medical sciences. Nehru's dream was that such a centre would set the pace for medical education and research in Southeast Asia , and in this he had the wholehearted support of his Health Minister, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. The health survey and development committee ,chaired by Sir Joseph Bhore, an Indian Civil Servant ,had in 1946 already recommended the establishment of a national medical centre which would concentrate on meeting the need for highly qualified manpower to look after the nation's expanding health care activities . The dreams of Nehru and Amrit Kaur and the recommendations of the Bhore Committee converged to create a proposal which found favor with the government of New Zealand. A generous grant from New Zealand under the Colombo Plan made it possible to lay the foundation stone of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 1952.The AIIMS was finally created in 1956 as an autonomous institution through an Act of Parliament, to serve as a nucleus for nurturing excellence in all aspect of health care. All-India Institute of Medical Sciences was established as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India; to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity; and to attain self-sufficiency in Post-graduate Medical Education.
