The Los Angeles City Council passed and terribly written and completely unworkable, not to mention most likely unenforceable set of regulations regarding medical cannabis. The law awaits the Mayor’s signature. However, most medical cannabis dispensing collective operators in L.A. have pledged to fight these new r3egulations tooth and claw. It seems to me that instead of collecting a decent sized tax revenue from collectives, not to mention the jobs that collectives provide, the City of LA will now have spend money that it doesn’t have to fight it out in court. Shameful. Also shameful is the case of Virgil Grant. Mr. Grant is an African American man who organized a few collectives in LA, mostly in underserved parts of town, like Compton and the Crenshaw area. He has five kids and is facing up to ten years in Federal prison. The judge and the DEA’s lawyers are squabbling now over how long his sentence is going to be. He is scheduled to be sentenced in March. Our thoughts and prayers go to Virgil and his family, and to all prisoners of the war on medical cannabis. Look for more about Virgil Grant and the ongoing LA battle next month. This month, we have a few new features: updated collective guides for Colorado!! And, a new feature, “Getting High with Dragonfly,” a monthly look at cannabis strains from around the planet. Along with the usual good stuff: A nice way to make butter from Mz. Jill, a macaroni and cheese recipe from Rachiebake (the cold weather makes me crave comfort food), tips from Ed, and Subcool, and a great story from Mickey Martin about a Cannabis Rally he put together in Oakland, CA. MAY 2009 WEST COAST CANNABIS 5 Pot & Pro SPortS Is It tIme to RethInk the offIcIal stance? By Eric K. Arnold I n 1978 slugger Orlando Cepeda—dubbed the “Baby Bull” for the prodigious clouts he delivered over a sixteen-year career with the San Francisco Giants and five other teams—was arrested on marijuana possession charges. Cepeda was sentenced to five years and served ten months, plus probation. The scandal left a noticeable stain on the Baby Bull’s legend. Despite outstanding lifetime statistics (.297 batting average, almost 379 home runs, and over 1,300 runs batted in) and an off-the-field history of community service, Cepeda was denied entry into the Hall of Fame until 1999, when the Veteran’s Committee voted him in. On October 30, 2009, just days after the Major League Baseball season ended, Cy Young Awardwinning pitcher Tim Lincecum (a current San Francisco Giant) was arrested for speeding and marijuana possession in Washington State. Lincecum was found with exactly 3.3 grams of pot (we’re guessing he had just bought a fresh 1/8th) and a pipe. Lincecum pled guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and paid a fine for speeding, in exchange for the possession charge being dropped. The arrest couldn’t have come at a worse time for Lincecum. After posting a 15-7 won-loss record, with 261 strikeouts and a glossy 2.48 ERA, he was up for his second consecutive Cy Young Award. The vote was just weeks away; a public-relations nightmare a la Tiger Woods, Plaxico Burress, or Michael Vick could easily have resulted in a firestorm of negative publicity. Yet though the arrest garnered coast-to-coast media headlines, public reaction resulted in not much more than a collective “So what?” As an SF Chronicle article written not long after Lincecum’s arrest revealed, most fans greeted the news of “Tim-meh’’s smoking habits with a shrug, not outrage; numerous comments on SFGate.com voiced support for Lincecum, along with support for marijuana use in general. On November 19—only 20 scant days after his arrest-- Lincecum won the award, becoming the first player in baseball history to win Cy Youngs in his first two full seasons in the majors. Clearly, public attitudes about pro athletes and pot use has changed significantly in the 30 years since Cepeda’s arrest. It didn’t hurt that the longhaired Lincecum looked like a rock star – were he to don a leather jacket and sunglasses, he could easily be mistaken for Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. It also didn’t hurt that Lincecum’s accomplishments were beyond reproach; clearly, pot didn’t adversely affect his performance on the field. Pot obviously didn’t affect the performance of Olympic record-setting swimmer Michael Phelps either. Last February, Phelps became the most high-profile herb smoker since Willie Nelson toked up in the White House, when a British tabloid published pictures of the 16-time Olympic medal winner (including 14 Gold medals) huffing on a bong at a college party at the University of South Carolina. The pictures suggested it wasn’t the first time America’s Aquaman had held a waterpipe; using a two-hand grip, with one hand cradling the bowl, and another steadying the stem, his baseball cap titled to the back, Phelps showed excellent bong-hitting technique. Though the sheriff declined to prosecute, citing lack of evidence, there was considerable fallout over the Phelps photos, at least initially. Phelps, who makes an estimated $5 million per year in endorsements, apologized in a statement for what he called “a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me.” 8 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 9 However, only one of Phelps’ sponsors, Kellog’s, dropped him after the incident, though he was also suspended from competitive swimming for three months, and one official questioned whether he would be allowed to participate in an anti-doping program, now that he had, in fact, been outed as a dope smoker. Yet just two months after the pictures surfaced, Phelps was given a standing ovation during an appearance before the Maryland Senate honoring his Olympic accomplishments. Seven months later, at the Cy Young Awards ceremony, Lincecum sheepishly apologized for what he too deemed a “mistake,” promising it will never happen again. Reading between the lines, his carefully-worded statement didn’t exactly disavow his marijuana use in the past or future, but basically stated he’ll be careful not to get busted again. There is little question that pro athletes are indeed role models for young people. Yet it is entirely open to debate whether pot use should preclude a professional sports player from setting a positive example for youth. A December 2009 study conducted for the National Institute of Drug Abuse found that not only are U.S. teenagers smoking in higher numbers and less likely to view marijuana as a harmful substance, but they have cut down on binge drinking, smoking cigarettes, and using methamphetamine – all of which are in fact much more harmful than pot. And it’s not hard to see a correlation between the upward trending of teenage pot smoking (most likely due to new information about its medicinal properties) and the downward trending of highly-addictive, unhealthy substances, which have no similar health benefits. So why shouldn’t a pot-smoking pitcher with a 98 mph fastball or an uncannily-speedy swimmer who takes an occasional bong hit be considered a role model, considering the alternative? With public opinion about marijuana more favorable than at anytime since it was classified as a Section 1 drug and made illegal, and medical marijuana permissible in several states, the issue has become less about decency, morality and societal standards, and more about perceived image – though not necessarily reality. Where image is concerned, pro sports leagues have much more grievous and serious issues to be concerned about than a player who smokes marijuana before, during or after games. Recent scandals involving sports include everything from adultery to discharging a loaded gun in a crowded nightclub to running an illegal dog-fighting business to referees betting on games to allegations of sexual assault to alcohol related DUIs to cases of domestic violence, vehicular manslaughter, and murder. In addition, recent studies have raised major concerns about long-term brain damage due to on-field concussions in football – at the pro, college, and high school levels. By far, the biggest threat to the integrity of sports isn’t marijuana, it’s performance-enhancing drugs like steroids, as the BALCO scandal and the ongoing drama surrounding the Tour de France have made perfectly clear. The straight dope is that many athletes smoke pot. It’s an open secret that marijuana is favored by many pro basketballers; ex-Philadelphia 76er Charles Oakley once estimated 60% of NBA players puff before they pass. Among the high-profile names who have been arrested 10 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 11 for possession of cannabis: Damon Stoudamire, Kareem AbdulJabbar (who was recently diagnosed with leukemia), Robert Parish, and Chris Webber. Other marijuana smokers who also happen to be professional athletes range from former Phillies relief pitcher Tug McGraw to Gold Medal-winning snowboarder Ross Rebagliati to current Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams to ex- Dallas Cowboys player Charles Stepnowski, who won two Super Bowls. Since retiring, Stepnowski has become a marijuana advocate. He’s gone on record as saying marijuana provided a more pleasant alternative to addictive painkillers. Considering all the aches and pains athletes must endure as part of their jobs, and the chronic injuries which persist long after their playing careers have ended, permitting players to use marijuana medicinally could only be seen as humane in a civilized society. Not only do some of your favorite athletes use pot regularly, but many sports fans smoke herb as well. I’ve personally seen “Oaksterdam” jerseys and “Bombers” hats in official team colors at Oakland Athletics games (quiet as it’s kept, cigarettes aren’t the only thing being inhaled in the Oakland Coliseum’s smoking section). Some might remember Cottonmouth clothing, whose baseball-themed “Hard Hitters 7.0” line gained some popularity among the urban/hip-hop crowd a few years back. Unfortunately, pro sports’ governing bodies and the majority of corporate firms associated with athletics have lagged far behind the American public in embracing pot and the medical marijuana movement. Still, the notion of Lincecum as a stoner apparently didn’t hurt his standing with the video game company who featured him on the cover of the games Major League Baseball 2K9 and Major League Base- ball 2K9 Fantasy All-Stars. Given this, it wouldn’t be surprising to find out that focus group studies have indicated that many (if not most) video game players puff regularly before they play. By that same token, Kellog’s dropping Phelps as an endorser was a bad move, in our opinion – considering how many pot smokers like to eat cereal as one of their preferred munchies. If Kellog’s was hip to the pot-smoking demographic, it would take the same approach that Cartoon Network, Ben & Jerry’s, and Jack in the Box have, subtly (and sometimes not-so-subtly) catering to millions of stoners who like to watch cartoons, slurp ice cream and crunchify 99-cent tacos when they get high. (Hmmm…on second thought, maybe Kellog’s should have switched Phelps’ picture from Corn Flakes to Rice Krispies.) One can only imagine the day when pro sports (and companies who use pro athletes to endorse their products) will realize the obvious and end the hypocrisy surrounding marijuana use by its athletes. With any luck, it won’t be too long before the Giants can openly announce a “Tim Lincecum one-hitter quitter” promotion, with a single-puff pipe shaped like a baseball bat, perhaps. Or how about introducing a new mascot, Stoney Seal? (Editor’s note: the Giants were once known as the San Francisco Seals.) As long as we’re dreaming, wouldn’t it be wonderful if baseball stadium concessions stands sold tasty, chewy herbal edibles or even high-grade spliffs -- thereby drastically reducing the inevitable drunken brawls at stadiums due to the availability of alcohol as the only legal intoxicant. Just imagine how well that would go over at Mile High Stadium. 12 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 13 Conrad State Building RUNG O FFI CI A L LY ANATOMY OF A POLITICAL ACTION How the Ring in the New Year Rally evolved from idea to action in 2 short weeks Mickey Martin munity leaders, concerned citizens and victims of the government’s war on cannabis came together in Oakland (on the first business day of the new year) to demand that 2010 be the year that safe access becomes a reality. I organized this rally in response to the news that I would indeed have to serve a one-year confinement period in the U.S. Bureau of Prisons Cornell Correctional facility, even though the U.S. Justice Department issued a memo stating resources were no longer to be spent prosecuting medical cannabis providers. I figured that this was a rare opportunity to use my On January 4th, 2010 public officials, activists, com- plight with justice to raise awareness for the cause and to mobilize people into action in the New Year. It was an idea that had been brewing for months as I waited for a federal judge to decide my fate. I had attended many political rallies and protests, but had never officially organized one. The experience was worth sharing. Steph Sherer (the director of Americans for Safe Access), and I mulled over the idea in mid-December at the ASA Holiday Party in Oakland. Our dialogue transformed into a moment of excitement and I knew that it had to be done and that I had to do it. Steph assured me that ASA would support the effort and came up with the idea for bells, as she said she associated bells with New Years. It was a brilliant plan and I ran with it. “The Ring in the New Year Rally and Protest” was born on a chilly street corner in downtown Oakland over a few cigarettes and some friendly laughter. I knew that since ASA was supporting the effort, I had a great chance of making a successful event. ASA would provide media support and contacts and their well-known brand would drive people to the event. I immediately contacted Jon Perri of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP). I wanted to align this event with their organization. I understand the power of the youth movement. SSDP’s grass roots organizing has a bold energy that was sure to inspire folks to come stand on a street corner on a cool winter day to yell about cannabis freedoms and make some noise for the movement. They agreed to help spread the word to their chapters and get people to come be a part of this historical event. It’s always a good idea to have a group like SSDP on board, as the younger generation networks so well on Facebook and Twitter. Plus, they are a well run a professional group that makes a statement everywhere they go. The groundwork had been laid for the event and it was too late to turn back now. I decided that the event had to be more than just screaming at the Federal Government again. The problem we are facing envelops more than just the Feds. The action would include a press conference at the Federal Building followed by a march to the State Building to demand California do more to protect patient rights. We would then march to Oakland City Center to support local govern- ments, such as Oakland, that have developed regulations to protect safe access in their cities. It was a plan that I had mulled over for many years. This problem is, and always has been, bigger than just the feds. The State of California has not done enough to protect its citizenry and bucked the responsibility to local governments. Some have done a great job ensuring safe access, while others have banned access altogether in their cities and towns. The rally was to reflect the battle we are fighting from one end of the state to the other and the struggle for cannabis freedoms that is happening nationwide. This action was meant to highlight the disparities we see at these different levels of governance and to demand that we, as patients and providers, no longer be treated like second-class citizens. I began putting together the marketing for the event. I developed a Facebook Event and Cause and began spreading the word to the many friends and followers in my network. These folks spread the word to folks in their network and before we knew it the event was buzzing around circles of activists and supporters. The response was wonderful. Those who could not make it sent well wishes and passed the word on to those who could. I designed a flyer and some signs to be distributed to areas where patients and supporters would find them. Berkeley Patient’s Group (BPG) agreed to help with the costs of printing and marketing the event. Finding resources in the community is paramount to an event’s success, as we are all in this together. BPG has always been a great supporter of political actions and social change. They also organized a sign-making party to ensure the crowd was armed with plenty of visual flair. The flyers and posters were distributed all over the Bay Area and in oakland City Hall 16 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 17 other parts of the state, as well. Next came organizing a list of speakers that reflected the spirit of the event. I knew I wanted supporting Public Officials to speak at the press conference. I contacted Oakland City Councilperson Rebecca Kaplan and Berkeley City Councilperson Kriss Worthington, as I knew they had been longtime champions of this cause. After navigating my phone tree to reach these folks over the holidays, they confirmed they would attend. I wanted the leaders of this movement to have an opportunity to speak, as well. I notified Jeff Jones and Ed Rosenthal with my desire to have them there, as well as Dr. Frank Lucido, Mikki Norris, Chris Conrad, James Anthony, and many others to stand by me in this fight for freedom. I received a great response and after everyone interview confirmed we had an impressive list of activists and speakers. ASA and SSDP were also going to have representatives speak on behalf of the community. It was a great turnout. Then I had to get the press on board. Kris Hermes from ASA helped me with contacts and helped edit the media advisory for the event. A good media advisory will include a short summary (Who, What, Where, When and Why) and contact information. We put out the advisory the Thursday morning before the event, as Friday was New Year’s Day. We followed it up with phone contacts to the entire local and some national media outlets. The alert was sent out again on Friday. On the morning of the event, the alert was again sent out and another round of calls was made to ensure that the message was received. There was a great response and it paid off. Several outlets showed up to film the event and do pieces on the action that reflected the underlying message that medical cannabis patients and providers were a vibrant part of the community and that ignoring or belittling our cause was no longer acceptable. I also did an in-depth interview with radio station KPFA on the Sunday Evening News segment the night before the event. The message was heard loud and clear. Me and tHe kid Throughout the process we blanketed email lists, websites, forums, and meetings with information about the event. The event had become so well known that I was receiving messages from groups who were disappointed they were not more directly involved, including a representative from the Libertarian Party that was insistent that this event needed a Libertarian presence. I assured these groups that they were not excluded, but that the event was orchestrated to represent a broader base of patients and providers, and was by no means meant to exclude anyone. It was great to reBeCCa kaplan 18 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 19 Crowd at tHe Federal Building have support from all over. You know you are doing something right when activist groups and political parties are calling you to see why they were not invited to speak. Unfortunately there is only so much time in a day, and we were already overbooked with speakers. Always better to have too many than too little, though. On the day of the event, supporters began to gather shortly before high noon. It was a beautiful crisp Oakland day. I had purchased some small bells from a party store to hand out to those in attendance who did not bring their own. We began demonstrating at noon. The press conference was slated to begin a 12:20. I helped organize the press and ensured they had interviews with anyone they needed. We were asked to move off of the property of the Federal Building, as we had not attained a permit for the event. I did not know that I needed a permit to organize at a building that my hard-earned tax dollars had gone to fund. I was not in the mood to argue with security, and they were nice enough about it, so we moved to the sidewalk in front of the building. Next time I will look into a permit. Lesson learned. I began the press conference with a speech about my situation and the injustices created by medical cannabis prohibition. Next up were Oakland City Councilperson Rebecca Kaplan and then Berkeley City Councilperson Kriss Worthington. They gave moving statements about their support for the movement and the successes their cities had seen in providing outlets for patients to access cannabis medicines. Worthington stated, “Mickey Martin is not a criminal. Incarcerating Mickey Martin is a crime.” Jeff Jones also spoke, followed by Frank Lucido. The great Ed Rosenthal accused the Feds of being terrorists in true to form Ed style. Lauren Payne from ASA and Jonathan Perri from SSDP spoke next, and Mikki Norris gave a moving commentary to finish the conference. 20 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 21 dr. Frank luCido We then began the march one block to the State of California Building. Our vocal group, armed with megaphones, signs, bells, and positive energy, chanted slogans like, “CANNABIS IS NOT A CRIME. RELEASE THE PEOPLE DOING TIME.” It was a colorful and bright experience. Expert witness Chris Conrad began the festivities at the State Building, blasting authorities and regulators for not doing more in the 13 plus years since the passage of Prop 215. BPG Director Debby Goldsberry, patient advocate Kim Cue, Attorney James Anthony, and state raid victim Addison Demoura all gave rousing speeches over a megaphone to loud cheers from the crowd. We called on the state to do more to protect our right to use and provide cannabis to patients in need. The final leg of the march led us to Oakland City Hall. We gathered to rally in support of the efforts made by local governments to ensure there were safe access points for patients in their cities. While we agreed that no local ordinance to date was perfect for patients, we commended the actions of cities that had done their best to regulate and legitimize the efforts of collectives in their municipalities. Collective operators spoke about their positive experiences in their town and we applauded the efforts of those that had put their best foot forward. My two-year-old son ran out in the middle ed roSentHal of my rant and gave me a hug. It was a surreal moment in my life and a beautiful experience. The event was a great success and the hard work and energy I had put in paid off. From what I could tell from pictures, over 100 dedicated activists and supporters had shown up to be a part of history and voice their support for medical cannabis. The issue was heard on media outlets and we had succeeded in raising awareness for the cause. I strongly suggest that we continue to use events like this one to pressure the powers-at-be until our goals of safe access to cannabis medicines is achieved. We continue to make headway and the wind is at our backs. Nothing is more powerful than a demonstration of human beings gathered in support of a cause they strongly believe in. No social and political change has come easy in this country and medical cannabis is no different. You CAN make a difference by organizing and attending events like the Ring in the New Year Rally. Thanks to all of those who made it out to participate in this direct action and those of you that did not, I hope to see you at the next one. King Kush Photo by Russell Rope Review @ http://www.WeedConnection.com 22 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com CannaButter Article & Photos by: MzJill How to Make ost of us are aware that marijuana has medicinal values. Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for over 4,800 years. Marijuana provides symptomatic relief from a list of medical aliments, such as nausea and vomiting, appetite stimulation, promoting weight gain, pressure from glaucoma, reduces muscle spasms from spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis, and diminishes tremors in multiple sclerosis patients. It also provides relief from migraine headaches, depression, seizures, insomnia and chronic pain. Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC is the main psychoactive substance found in marijuana. THC receptors are found in animals, mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles. There are two known types of cannabinoid receptors; CB1 and CB2. The CB1 receptors are mainly found in the brain, they are also found in both the male and female reproductive systems. The CB1 receptors seem to be responsible for the euphoric and the anticonvulsive effects. The CB2 receptors are mainly found in the immune system and are responsible for the anit-inflammatory effects. M Although many people desire the medicinal effects of marijuana, they are unable to smoke it. Instead, they must ingest their medicine. When eaten, marijuana can be a quite potent medicine that relieves deep and chronic pain. Since THC is not a water-soluble compound, butter is a good carrier substance for ingestion. Cannabutter is butter- which has been infused with cannabinoids. The high from cannabutter is a bit different than the high from the traditional method of smoking. The high from digesting marijuana comes on much slower and lasts much longer than the high from smoking. Consuming marijuana by eating provides superior medicinal relief from pains and spasms. Unlike taking prescription drugs for pain, eating cannabis is often less debilitaing. Eating cannabis can sometimes cause nausea and may detour a person from consuming cannabis orally, but this side affect will diminish partially or completely as your body becomes accustomed to the intake of cannabinoids. Cannabutter can be made using what remains of the plant after trimming, which are normally thrown away after harvesting. However the 24 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 25 Left to right: Start with quality butter; butter melting in boiling water; cannabis material; putting cannabis in water; strainer and bowl; mashing liquid through strainer. most potent butter will come from using actual buds or bud leaves containing a significant amount of visible resin. The higher quality ingredients you use, the more potent and flavorful your butter will be. If you choose to use the leaf matter from your plants, it is important to allow the trim to dry fully to avoid the taste of chlorophyll in your final product. I have been making cannabutter for approximately eight years now. I know a marijuana patient, we’ll call him “John,” who previously took a variety of prescription medications; Oxycotin, Wellbutrin, Zoloft and Viagra. I had recently learned of the benefits of eating cannabis, so I made some cannabutter cookies and gave them to him. Approximately eight years later, I still make canna-cookies for him, and canna-cookies are his only form of medication. He no longer needs Oxycotin for his pain, or Zoloft & Wellbutrin for his mind, now he also has a happy sex life without the use of Viagra. John doesn’t enjoy smoking marijuana, but he is happy to eat one canna-cookie a day. Making cannabis cookies is normcally a two-day process. Day one consists of making the butter and day two is cookie-making day. The first step in making cannabutter is to assemble your ingredients and preparation tools. The amount of butter and cannabis used can vary depending on how potent you want the end product to be. I use four to six ounces of cannabis material and 1.25 cups of butter (5 sticks). It is important to use real butter rather than margarine; butter will set up after the process is complete. You will need a large stainless steel pot with a lid, a large stainless steel bowl, a fine mesh metal strainer, and metal slotted spoons. It is best to use stainless steel cookware and utensils rather than plastic, because product can be lost in porous plastic. Fill your large pot with enough water to cover all of your cannabis material, usually about ¾ full should do it. Put the butter in the water and allow it to come to a rapid boil. Once the water is at a rapid boil, add the cannabis material, stir well and allow the mixture to return to a rapid boil. Cover the pot, turn the burner to medium and allow the mixture to cook at a low boil for about an hour. After an hour, turn the burner off and leave the mixture to sit for another hour, covered. Be sure not to boil for too long—this degrades potency. Put a strainer over the large mixing bowl and carefully pour your mixture through the strainer. After pouring the mixture through the strainer your bowl will likely be full, so now put your strainer over the empty pot. Push the excess liquid through the strainer with a large slotted spoon or smasher; set the smashed material aside, I use the lid from cooking or a small metal bowl. Pour the liquid from the pot into the rest of the mixture in the bowl. Place the strainer over the pot again and then hand squeeze the material (a handful at a time) through the strainer. The liquid will be very hot and you may think about bypassing this process, but don’t. There is a lot of valuable medicine trapped in the material that you will lose if you skip this process. It is important to do this process while the material is still hot so that the butter doesn’t set up in the material and become lost. Thick rubber cooking gloves may be helpful. Now restrain your material back into the pot. Double check your large bowl to ensure it doesn’t have any material particles present, then place your strainer back over the bowl and pour your liquid back through once more. Tightly cover your bowl full of butter with aluminum foil (be sure you cover it extra tight so that your whole fridge won’t smell of cannabutter), and let it refrigerate overnight. Use a metal slotted spoon to scrape the butter off of the liquid, and then place the butter in the strainer. Pour out the wastewater; it will look very dirty and full of sediment. Leave the butter to sit for approximately thirty minutes, to allow the excess water to drain and evaporate. If you plan on making cookies right away, you can set your strainer on top of a clean plate and set it in the refrigerator for approximately 15 minutes to harden back up some. If you don’t plan on immediately using the butter it can be placed into a freezer bag or freezer safe container and refrigerated for short-term storage or frozen for long-term storage. When you are ready to make your canna-cookies, use your cannabutter in the same manner that you would use regular butter. Preferably use a recipe that calls for butter rather than oil. I like to use Betty Crocker cookie mixes, as they are simple. The Chocolate Chip and the Sugar Cookie mixes both have proven to work very well. When using the Sugar Cookie mix I like to add a few drops of vanilla and lemon extract for added flavor. Bake the cookies as per the package directions. The cookies will keep best frozen in a freezer safe container or freezer bag. Medicinal Marijuana Cookies The recipe is: a pack of Better Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix, 1 Egg, 1/2 cup cannabutter, we also add (for extra flavor) a dash of both lemon and vanilla extracts. 32 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 33 420 COLLECTIVE Private Medical Cannabis Care For Qualified patients Open Mon-Sun 12pm-8pm FREE GIFT For 1st time patients (310)401-3454 CALIFORNIA STATE APPROVED NOT FOR PROFIT COLLECTIVE 12421 Venice Blvd.Suite #4 Venice, CA. 90066 tHe proverBial Stage was set on this warm winter night, with the wind still, in the city many have nicknamed “Berkeley by the Beach.” Even the busiest part of town on this Saturday evening was painted in a mellow backdrop. No one had any trouble parking or navigating the sidewalks without so much as a hurry to their step. Santa Cruz, California’s stoniest, most super-chilled finest filled the Main Ballroom of the Veteran’s Hall with some serious smoke from about 7pm to midnight in December…. The 2009 Santa Cruz Medical Cup was a low-key affair, peppered by the eclectic sounds of local rock quartet Lavish Green and Reggae music (deejayed by the hall’s sound crew and sponsored and run SANTA CRUZ CUP by Glass Roots, one of SC’s best Headshops). All the judges, and everyone there was a judge, medicated steadily into the night, many people bringing their heady glass accoutrements. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many “water pipes” being used in one place! That’s right, people. Santa Cruz knows how to party! This Cup was one to remember (or not remember) and a good time was had by all. Everyone behaved themselves and everything went smoothly, without so much of a hitch…. I’m pretty sure that any food left downtown after The Cup was annihilated before too long. The pizzerias must’ve made bank, anyway…. Patients at the Cup were greeted with happy, little gift bags and offered a Bic lighter in the color of their choice as they 34 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 35 entered the hall and streamed out onto the long conference tables arranged in zigzag (no pun intended) pattern. When they sat down to empty said bags, they found the following: the eight strains (one gram sample of each) competing in The Cup, a “Peanut Butter Moose Knuckles” edible from Lyberti Pharms, a Cup T-Shirt, a Cup pipe [glass spoon] with padded Vatra case and a voting card. Booths run by Lyberti Pharms Edibles and California Grown (art and apparel) welcomed judges and cordially provided commerce for goods and information as the night unfolded. The humble owner of Glass Roots presided as Master of Ceremonies and friends, family and staff of Glass Roots worked as event staff. As the first layer of smoke quickly made its presence, judges were welcomed to complimentary pints of Fat Tire and Coors Light on tap. Sodas and bottles of water were also gratis to wet our whistles in between tokes…. A few of the fellas at the table came up with a good way to taste all the strains in competition without “getting too medicated.” What I will now dub as the “Table of Eight,” was an organized system where eight of us at the table were designated to roll ONE entry into a reefer each. Then, one by one the joints went into rotation and comments were made in between fits of coughing. It must have been around entry number two when servers took our dinner orders, and it was around entry five or six when the entrees [Spaghetti with meatballs or Fettuccini Alfredo with poached and sliced chicken breast served with garlic bread, introduced by a fine salad] made their way out. I don’t know if it was the cannabis, but the dinner tasted mighty fine as our charged appetites happily met the challenge of putting away the respectable amounts given…. What’s the perfect thing after a nice meal? Why, a tasty smoke of course! The “Table of Eight” got back to the task of happily putting the remaining spliffs into rotation. By this point, intelligent conversation about what we were tasting became a futile matter, and smiles and nods went around in agreement about how tasty The Cup was and how lifted it made the whole congregation. All fun and games aside, the judges got to the business of trying to put the anonymous entries in order of more or less favored; a difficult task given the, ahem, “circumstances.” It wasn’t long before votes were tallied and the winning strains were be announced…. Clear choices for First, Second and Third Places were not easy to make—every entry was “fire.” In the interim, a number of raffles were intermittently called. Some of the judges who were fortunate enough to win got gifts ranging from a heady piece from Honalee Glass [Reno, Nevada], a 36 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 37 ADVERTISEMENT portable vaporizer, edibles and T-shirts…. Then, the Master of Ceremonies awarded the cups: TRAINWRECk: menthol/mint scent with lemon-pepper, ginger and floral undertones; light and creamy lemon-Key lime pie flavor with peppery notes. Get High with Dragonfly every month in West Coast Cannabis Magazine. Dr. Walker’s Daze (sativa) This rare and exotic high sativa strain caught the attention of Northern California chronisseurs when it was the uncontested favorite and unanimous winner of the 2009 Earthdance Cannabis Cup sponsored by Harborside Health Center. Earthdance is a music festival that takes place in Humboldt County at the end of every summer, and this was the first cannabis cup Harborside sponsored there. Of the dozen or so entries, Dr. Walker’s Daze left an impression from the dry hit alone. Participants who had been chatting interrupted their conversations to comment on the pungent, unique, spicy taste before the joint had even been lit. And when we blazed, we were dazed and amazed. Dr. Walker’s Daze is a three-way cross created by Moonshine Man. Its genetics consist first of a cross between Albert Walker (a highlycoveted Pacific Northwest strain) and Medicine Man, which created the Dr. Walker strain. Then Dr. Walker was crossed with Daze, a 100-day phenotype of Soma Seed’s 99 Amnesia Haze (Amnesia Haze/Amnesia Haze/ Nevile’s Haze). Only a few seeds were ever produced from this tasty, sativadominant threesome, and somewhere around the end of 2006, the seeds went on auction to the highest bidder. The final pack of seeds of this elite strain was bought for $800 at a seed-auction Web site. The strain was destined to remain in obscurity, a strain for the seasoned chronisseur, until one retiring ganja enthusiast passed his collection on to a talented and well-respected grower. This grower grew the plant from seed, a painstaking process, and nurtured it with the level of care usually reserved for a mother and her newborn child. 12 weeks later, Dr. Walker’s Daze was resurrected, just in time for the Earthdance Cannabis Cup. DW Daze is a natural antidepressant and an instant mood enhancer. Whatever your initial frame of mind, puff, puff, pass and you’ll be giddy with giggles, stuck with a case of the warm fuzzies, and basking in the sunshine of euphoria. It turns rainy days into rainbows. This uplifting sativa strain has a distinctly energetic effect. You’ll take on even the most mundane activity with happy alertness. And you’ll have the energy and motivation to actually do what you planned that day. Smoke it when you have the freedom to just hang out and enjoy the high and you’ll quickly find you have a smile on your face for reasons you can’t quite remember. Can’t find Dr. Walker’s Daze? After all, it is the kind of rare strain you’re more likely to find in some chronisseur’s radical head stash than for sale. But don’t worry. I have taken it upon myself to smoke a joint of it (rolled in a raw, unbleached paper to limit taste-contamination) to get you vicariously loaded. Prepare to get DW Dazed. The smell off the grinder: Spicy dark chocolate with a hint of pepper in the after-scent. The dry hit: A deep, rich taste accented with pine, a subtle sweetness, a certain spiciness, and again that hint of pepper. The dry hit leaves a faint menthol tingle on the tongue. The Hot Boy I smoked it with is convinced he got high off the dry hits alone. The flavor: Reminiscent of wood burning, or being in the woods after rain. The Hot Boy noticed a mesquite overtone. I found myself tasting the residue in my mouth like one does after puffing a fine cigar (not that I smoke cigars.) The cloud: When Hot Boy exhaled, I sat smiling in the smoke cloud so long I had to be reminded to hit the joint. The aroma was complex, but overall called to mind wood burning on a winter’s night. 40 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 41 The high: Perhaps external factors played a role in my experience, but it made my heart beat faster and my lips pucker. It made the Hot Boy dizzy when he kissed my tummy. It got us so blasted we forgot to finish the joint. And when the hot boy went to put his Hoodie on, he put it on upside-down. Not inside-out. Upside-down. With the hood covering his ass. Dude. That’s how high we got. So high even his hoodie couldn’t tell his head from his ass. We didn’t play any music or have any other form of artificial stimulation during the smoke-out and for the duration of the high. We just sat there, or lay there, enjoying every atom of existence. But that’s just my interpretation. The Panel: In order to bring you a diversity of reactions to this bud, a private cannabis cup was held somewhere deep in the redwoods in which a select panel of chronisseurs convened to evaluate the effects of Dr. Walker’s Daze and other strains. It was the first joint of the competition, toked on a clean palate. The effects reported included “giggles, uplifting, full-bodied, warm, alert, and euphoric.” The smell was described as “like haze, cacao, cinnamon, and vanilla.” Most participants reported a classic haze flavor, while others tasted mango and a subtle spiciness. The Grow: A high sativa, Dr. Walker’s Daze reportedly roots easily and grows vigorously. It can be quite frosty and resinous and has a flowering period of 72+ days. One could say that the high yield makes it worth the long flowering time—but, truthfully, it’s the high itself that makes it worth it. Dr. Walker’s Daze is sure to be a preferred smoke for even the most discriminating pot snob. If you ever have the good fortune of coming across this epic boutique strain, I highly recommend picking some up. The only thing you’ll regret is that it didn’t cross your path sooner. I have no formal training and everything I have learned I taught myself. If I can, you can! Since my very first opportunity to look through a macro lens, I've been hooked. Cannabis is such an amazing subject, and through a powerful macro lens it can take on an alien-like appearance. While I would not try to teach anyone about photography technique (I mayself am still learning), I can offer some pointers to greatly improve the pictures you take of your favorite plants. The basics people often forget are: • • • Use a well-lit white room No incandescent lighting (it produces yellow hues). No toilets, buckets, brooms moms or dog turds in the background. Take the time to clean up a bit or you might end up with a shop vacuum appearing in a cannabis magazine with your favorite plant. area to photograph in. Even without spending a fortune on fancy lights and reflectors, you can still take amazing shots by setting up a very inexpensive “light tent.” I set mine up by using some white sheets and several CFL bulbs mounted in painter’s reflectors, which you can buy at any hardware store in the painting section. Cut the sheets or cheap white fabric into four-foot wide sections and select a bright corner of a room to hang three sections to form a box open on one end. Once the cloth is in place, position your CFL lamps on the outside of the tent facing the cloth so that the light is deflected in an even The next thing is the one that is going to upset you hydro growers. You cannot take proper pictures under a HID light. While white balancing and editing with photo software can make a picture taken under HID better, you will never achieve extraordinary results until you use a properly lit 46 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 47 pattern. I like to use a combination of natural sunlight type bulbs and bulbs that lean to the blue side of the spectrum. Try placing the bulbs in different locations to see what effect they lend. Experiment till you get the best even lighting: do not take this part of photography lightly. If you do not have enough external lighting, your pictures will not be as sharp as you would like. Next on the list is a good back drop. It should provide a pleasing contrast to your subject. You don’t have to spend a fortune here either. Cheap cloth is $1 to $3 per yard, and even fine crushed velvet is only $5 to $7 per yard. Two square yards is plenty to shoot against, and over the past few years we have collected some 2 dozen different fabrics to complement either the color of the bud or the festive time of year (like Christmas or the Skull cloth I use for Halloween shots). Invest in a few, but make sure that black and purple velvet are among the first you collect. We hang the back drop and position the plant in front with at 48 WEST COAST CANNABIS | www.westcoastcannabis.com February 2010 | WEST COAST CANNABIS 49 least 12-16” distance between back drop and subject. You want to focus on the bud, not the backdrop. It’s finally time to talk about camera’! You might think you need some ultra-expensive DSLR to get great close ups, and it does help. However, but my cover shot of Sputnik on the cover of Big Book of Buds 3 was taken with a Nikon Coolpix Digicam. How was I able to achieve this with a simple point and shoot camera with a fixed lens? I used a Tripod! This is the one thing so many amateur photographers take for granted. When taking close up shots, everything has to be perfectly still. Even the steadiest of hands will waver as the shutter opens and closes. So, whatever camera you’re using, mount the camera on a tripod. When researching a point and shoot digital camera for use on close ups, the only important factor is the minimum focal distance. This will be in the specifications of the camera. The Nikon Coolpix 5400 has the ability to focus as close as 1 cm from the lens, although 2 cm is more common with most point and shoot cameras today. If your camera won’t get closer than that with a fixed lens, your close ups won’t be as sharp or as close as you want. The final aspect of close up photography I employ is a lens mount ring flash. This is critical to get really close and still have proper lighting on the subject. While I now shoot with a professional rig and a Sigma Ring flash when I started, I simply built my own using this great online tutorial: http://brainerror.net/texts/howto/macroring/ Without a lens mount lamp or flash, your camera body or even the barrel of the lens itself may block the external light and cause shadows. Using a ring light is the easiest way to prevent this, and it also provides enough illumination to capture a close up shot in a crisp clean form. LED lights really make trichomes stand out and its pretty easy to fashion a homemade light using a few of these inexpensive bulbs. Once I learned a few things and I was able to sell a shot to Big Book of Buds 3, I decided to buy an SLR camera and a nice macro lens. I took it out of the box, and my first 100 pictures were terrible. It is amazing how many settings a point and shoot camera figures out for you, automatically. When the settings are up to you, some education is called for. It is actually much easier to get good close ups with a point and shoot macro camera than it is with a SLR—until you learn a few basic settings. As I said, I won’t try to teach photography, but I want everyone to understand that unless you’re willing to put in the time, a digital camera may be a better choice than a full blown SLR. Photography is an amazing and addictive hobby and there is always a better lens to buy or a better tripod or something exotic like macro rails, but that doesn’t mean it costs a lot to get started. I bought my first Nikon on eBay for under $400 with a Nikon SL-1 ring lamp included. While I now shoot with a Nikon D-50, D-80, a Sigma 105 MM Macro Lens and a Sigma EF-140 Ring Flash, it all started with that simple Digicam. Dare to dream, and there are no limits to what you can achieve. She then helped found The Hemp Tour and Cannabis Action Network, coordinating events all over the country educating people about the medical, industrial and personal uses of cannabis. “In the 80’s and 90s at height of the Drug War” said Goldsbery, “it was imperative to reach out to cannabis users and teach them people their constitutional rights, to help them get organized, and to form a platform for coalition work to reform the cannabis laws.” Her work has been breaking down barriers and demystifying the use of cannabis for over 20 years. Debby helped found Berkeley Patients Group and has carried on the dream of the late Jim McLelland after his passing from AIDS about one year after opening. The vision for BPG has always been to provide safe and effective cannabis medicines and provide quality of life services to seriously ill patients. She see’s the goal of her collective model as providing an uplifting and positive experience, and to enjoy life while supporting one another. BPG provides support for many other organizations in the movement, including MPP, ASA, NORML, SSDP, Flex Your Rights, as well as supporting local organizations in states working for reform of medical cannabis laws. She states, “My greatest accomplishment has been fulfilling Jim's original vision for BPG, and celebrating our ten year anniversary with the City of Berkeley unanimously voting that day as ‘Berkeley Patients Group Day’ in our city.” Debby was also part of the “Silent 7” who refused to testify against Ed Rosenthal in his Federal trial under subpoena. Their refusal to participate could have landed them in jail, as they were found guilty of contempt of court. Federal Judge Breyer set them free without jail time and praised the dignity of their presentation. It was a moment all activists can learn from in standing up for their rights. Debby is sure to continue to carry the torch for cannabis until this war on a plant is long over. She is currently helping develop the Medical Cannabis Safety Council to provide a self-regulatory body for patients and regulators to depend on for quality assurance standards in the industry. Heating the cannabis above water’s boiling point of 212º F or 100º C breaks the bond quickly. However, a lower temperature, 100º F or 33º C will provide enough energy for the bond to break, although it takes longer. A cooler room with very low humidity will also destabilize the bond, gradually causing the water to move from the carbon atom to the air. upright plants resulted in upright plants in the first generation. A few of the F1’s showed more bushiness than the upright parent. However, the allele for prostrate growth is recessive. AUTO-FLOWERING – light-regulated Crosses of pure auto-flowering ruderalis with light-sensitive indica and sativa plants resulted in auto-flowering F1’s. Almost all of the F2 crosses were autoflowering as well. This indicates that several genes are involved. Most characteristics seem to share dominance. They are both expressed in the progeny. An example is leaf shape. Indicas have a webbed leaf. Sativas have long, thin leaflets. The hybrid shape is an intermediate between the two. Other characteristics in which different versions of genes, called alleles, have shared or partial dominance include: THC-CBD ratios Ask Ed REGENERATIoN I am a medical grower and I am allowed to grow only six plants. At first I was using 2 lights and grew them in a 4’ x 8’ tray. Then I read about the Oregon medical growers who use 1 lamp per plant. I tried that and it worked well, except that it took the plants a long time to fill the space while growing in vegetative. I thought it was a waste to let all that growth die after just one crop and I was about to regenerate the plants. Then a buddy of mine told me he read that regenerating plants is not a good idea because the plants’ genetics change and they won’t be as good as the first buds. Is this true? Regenerated plants retain the same genetics throughout their existence. The first and subsequent crops will have only a minimal variation, which is based on environmental conditions such as light intensity, temperature and nutrients. However, the genetics of the plants remain the same. To regenerate a plant, leave some vegetative and bud material on the plant branches that you wish to grow. Then place the plants under continuous light. The plants will revert to vegetative growth. Within a short time vegetation will cover the canopy and the plants can be forced to flower again. It will save you four to six weeks of vegetative growth time. MARIjuANA QuESTIoNS? ™ DETERMINING ALLELES Is there a list of what alleles are dominant to others? I want to know what will show up when I cross my parents. No genetic map of cannabis has been published. We know that some characteristics are dominant. These include: UPRIGHT – prostrate Crosses of prostrate plants with water with a seed starting solution. Keep the seeds moist but not so wet that they don’t have contact with air. DRYING QuESTIoNS Does lighting affect the curing and drying process? Does hanging the plant upside down while curing affect the quality of the finished product? Bright light degrades THC so it’s always recommended that marijuana be cured and dried in a dark or dimly lit space. Growers often hang plants upside down to cure and dry. The large fan leaves hang over the buds. This slows the drying process, which leads to a smoother smoke. It is also a convenient way to store the drying plants while allowing air to circulate between the branches. Hanging the plants does not increase potency. When the plant is cut, no more THC or other cannabinoids are produced. Resin doesn’t flow down the plant stem to the buds. THC is produced on site in the glands during the plant’s growth phases and doesn’t migrate to other parts of the plant during harvesting. Drying the plant whole is only one method of curing and drying. Many growers prefer to cut the plant and manicure the buds while they are still wet. When the branches are still moist, the glands are pliable and are less likely to cascade off the plant. I have been storing some seeds in a film canister in my desk drawer. Are they still alive or have they died? decarboxylation seed life expectancy Some of the seeds are probably still alive if the room (and the desk drawer) were kept at room temperature (72 degrees F) or lower. Seeds die faster when kept at higher temperatures. The conditions favoring seed viability are darkness, cool temperature and low humidity. Seed life is extended dramatically by storing them in a refrigerator at 40 degrees F or below. For very long-term storage, seeds can be kept in a freezer. Thawing and refreezing can damage the seeds so make sure to thaw them only when ready to plant. To prepare your seeds for planting, soak them overnight in a 1% hydrogen peroxide solution. Plant them about 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch deep in sterile planting mix or hydroponic medium and How do I convert THC to the active form from the inactive? If I heat it up to about ~230º F, or 106º C will it activate? THC is produced extra-cellularly in the gland membrane. It is held in a relatively inactive form THCA or THC acid. The THCA molecule contains a carbonate ring that is weakly bonded. When the carbonate tail is removed the molecule becomes much more active. Carbonate is COOH, one carbon atom (C), two oxygen atoms (O) and one hydrogen atom (H). You may have noticed that the two oxygen atoms and single hydrogen atom seem familiar. It’s the formula for water. Drying the grass releases the water molecule from the bond. Residual carbonates are released shortly before the burn, as the cannabis heats up. Activating cannabinoids to be ingested is of more concern. A single cannabinoid variety is one in which a single cannabinoid, for instance, THC or CBD is expressed, but the other cannabinoids are not produced by the plant. Two single-cannabinoid varieties, each expressing a different cannabinoid, were crossed. The progeny produced reduced amounts of each of the two cannabinoids. This indicated that they shared their expression of cannabinoids. Although environmental conditions affect potency they do not affect the ratios of cannabinoids, which are genetically determined. Time to maturity Crosses of fast maturing plants with slow maturing plants result in plants with an intermediate ripening time. Odor Plants pick up odors from both parents. The stronger odor seems more dominant, but the progeny is often less pungent than the smellier parent and more pungent than the less smelly one. Size Crosses of tall and short plants result in F1 plants of middle size. Leaf, plant and bud formation F1 crosses show characteristics of each parent. This includes bushiness and branching patterns. The book Marijuana Botany by Robert Clark has more detailed information on this subject. It would not be strong enough for the police to obtain a warrant because the informants couldn’t pinpoint when you were in possession. However, it could trigger an investigation including surveillance of your residence, searching through your garbage, talking to neighbors and trying to entrap you using the “knock and talk” technique. It’s improbable that your employer would report you to the police or that the police would investigate you based on that tip. Improbable, but it probably has happened more than we know. in a garden. I'm scheduled to have a drug test in a week. I was wondering if this past weekend's activities would have any negative bearing? I have abstained from inhaling anything for three weeks now and feel that after four weeks most THC will have left my system. Is this correct? You need not worry. You have a low level of THC metabolites in your system after abstaining from use for a month. Little THC is absorbed through the skin. However, you probably breathed in some glands when you were gardening. Drug tests are calibrated to detect recent use. Your abstaining has allowed your body to eliminate almost all of the suspect substance. Can I root the cutting in water? Cuttings can be taken from plants when they are flowering. The cuttings will root whether they are kept in flowering or forced into vegetative growth by extending the lighted period each day to at least 18 hours. Cutting the bud off will not shorten the time it takes for the cutting to root or to revert to vegetative growth. The cutting can be rooted in the same way as vegetative cuttings. If you choose to root it in water, keep the water temperature at 72-74 degrees F. Change the water every few days. Once you see root initiation, use a dilute flowering formula to promote root growth for about a week. Then the cutting should be ready to plant. When transplanting, make sure to keep the soil moist. Switch to a vegetative formula to promote leaf growth. The campaign turned the signatures in to county registrars of voters in every county in California on Wednesday, January 20th. Once the signatures are reviewed and verified by the Secretary of State, the Tax Cannabis 2010 initiative will be placed on the November 2010 statewide ballot. When passed by the voters, the Tax Cannabis 2010 initiative will: T • Regulate cannabis like alcohol: Allow adults 21 and older in California to posses up to one ounce of cannabis and cultivate 25 square feet (5 feet x 5 feet) for personal Every day, more and more Califorconsumption. nians are signing on as supporters of the Tax Cannabis 2010 campaign. She wanted to know if I had a recipe for a “Killer Mac & Cheese (not from a box)?" I told her, HELL YEAH! And then I got to thinking… February is the perfect month for comfort food, so here it is by special request. Super Easy and Beyond Delicious!!! Ingredients 1 pound elbow macaroni 1/3 cup Cannabis infused butter 1 pound sharp Cheddar cheese (or any kind of cheese you like. I to mix different kinds of cheeses together) • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 ½ cups milk • 1 ½ cups heavy cream • Optional ingredients: bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic (I prefer fresh pressed) • • • IF YOU EAT CANNABIS... Food-based cannabis medicines affect patients differently than inhaled methods of medicating with cannabis. Eating too much cannabis can cause extreme drowsiness, dizziness, inability to concentrate, diminished ability to focus, rapid heartbeat, increases or decreases in blood pressure, need for sleep, and feelings of euphoria. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add macaroni and cook for 4 to 5 minutes (until the macaroni is half cooked). Grease a 3-quart baking dish with some of the Cannabis infused butter, add 1∕ ₃ of the cooked macaroni and then layer with cheese, salt, and pepper (now's the time to add the optional ingredients for each layer) Repeat this until baking dish is full. Pour the milk and heavy cream over the macaroni dot with the remaining Cannabis-infused butter. Cover the macaroni and cheese with foil and bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Remove the foil (you can add more bread crumbs and parmesan cheese and bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the macaroni is brown and bubbling on top). See you next month. Enjoy!!! RachieBake 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Begin with 1/4 of a “dose” or small portion of product Wait for at least one hour and analyze the effects If necessary consume another 1/4 dose or small portion Wait for at least one more hour If necessary, consume part or all of the remaining product. How can you ingest cannabis medicines safely? Learn to manage your dosage effectively... Ensure that your dosage level is appropriate before attempting to operate heavy machinery, motor vehicles, boats, or motorcycles. Do be aware of your surroundings and possible hazards, and prepare for your needs before taking medication. Remember: Edibles can vary greatly in potency. Products often contain multiple doses or lesser doses of medicine. Weight, metabolism, and eating habits can alter dosage effects. Taking medication on an empty stomach can intensify medicinal effects. Learn dosage management that works for you when ingesting cannabis medicine. If you feel you have eaten too much of a food-based medicine, do not panic, your symptoms will subside within a few hours. Remain calm. Stay hydrated and eat food to help symptoms pass. Edible cannabis is safe and will not cause any long-term toxicity. This Kryptonite, however, will have you feeling superpowered yourself. Let’s hear from the grower and photographer, DoobieDuck: "This strain is a cross of Trainwreck and Bluemoonshine. Bluemoonshine=Moonshine from Dutch Passion, a super potent Blueberry Indica. It is the sort of cannabis that energizes me and jump starts my creativity. As a med patient having to live with chronic pain from several spine surgeries, and as an artist, I find smoke of this sort that sparks my interest in a creative project is very useful. I do not feel or think about my pain issues when my mind is occupied doing a creative activity. Non-patients, artists, musicians and the like, would also love this strain, as audio perception is fantastic, visual perception is increased, and as I said, it jump starts creativity. Thank you and your magazine for the interest in my strains and images." —DoobieDuck He bought the seeds years ago, and this strain maybe lost to all but a handful of growers. It makes sense. Kryptonite is supposed to be rare….editor@westcoastcannabis. com
