[email protected] Democrat Adam Ebbin, a gay man who has served in the Virginia House of Delegates since 2004, won election on Tuesday to the Virginia Senate, becoming the state’s first openly gay senator. Ebbin defeated Republican challenger and political newcomer Timothy McGhee by a margin of 64 percent to 35 percent. He ran in a district with a solid Democratic majority that includes parts of Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax counties. “I am honored by the trust the voters have showed in me,” Ebbin said in a statement. “During the campaign, I listened to the voters’ concerns and will work on behalf of the values we all share: improving our public schools, expanding our transit system and cleaning up Virginia’s environment. I will make sure their voices are heard.” Ebbin emerged as an outspoken advocate for LGBT equality during his tenure as the state’s only out gay member of the House of Delegates. He said one of his top priorities in the Senate will be to push legislation to ban job discrimination against state government employees based on sexual orientation and gender identity. [email protected] Records kept by the late gay rights pioneer Frank Kameny show that Kameny and fellow activist and native Washingtonian Jack Nichols co-founded the Mattachine Society of Washington, D.C., on Nov. 15, 1961 as the city’s — and nation’s — first homosexual civil rights organization. Kameny, then 36, and Nichols, 23, were joined by at least three others on that day at the group’s first official meeting, held in the Harvard Street, N.W., apartment of Earl Aiken, one of the group’s first members, according to information obtained by D.C.’s Rainbow History Project. LGBT activists and Kameny’s friends and colleagues in D.C. and across the nation are scheduled to gather in Washington at the Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill next Tuesday, Nov. 15, for a memorial service celebrating Kameny’s life and legacy. The gay rights leader died at his home in Washington on Oct. 11. Organizers say the gathering will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kameny and his gay rights colleagues’ founding of the Mattachine Society of Washington. [email protected] A gay Air Force sergeant and four gay military veterans in full dress uniform joined gay D.C. Council members David Catania and Jim Graham as pallbearers at a memorial viewing last Thursday honoring the late gay rights pioneer Frank Kameny. The contingent of pallbearers, including gay former Army Lt. Dan Choi, carried an American flag-draped coffin bearing Kameny’s remains into the main hall of the historic Carnegie Library in downtown Washington, where the viewing was held. Friends and activists who knew Kameny during his 50-year tenure as one of the nation’s and D.C.’s leading LGBT rights advocates said the ceremony and memorial viewing of his closed coffin was a fitting sendoff for a man they said improved the lives of millions of LGBT Americans. Members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington opened the ceremony by singing the National Anthem as D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, D.C. Congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, four D.C. Council members and a contingent of friends and activists stood near the coffin. Hundreds of activists, community allies, public officials, and D.C. residents who knew Kameny or knew of his work filed past the coffin between 3 p.m. and the start of the ceremony at 6:60 p.m. Among them was John Berry, director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the highest-ranking openly gay appointee in the Obama administration. The Rev. Elder Troy Perry, founder of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, which caters to mostly LGBT congregations throughout the country, traveled from his home base in Los Angeles to attend the event. Perry, an outspoken advocate for LGBT rights for more than 30 years, worked with Kameny on national LGBT-related projects in the 1970s and 1980s. Mayor Gray said Kameny’s civil rights work led to a “massive, positive change” in the way LGBT people live their lives both in D.C. and across the nation. “Frank Kameny is one of the most significant figures in the history of the American gay rights movement,” Gray told the gathering. “It was a poignant coincidence that Dr. Kameny passed away on National Coming Out Day because he came out as a proud gay man in an era in which there were virtually no social and legal supports for sexual minorities who chose to live their lives openly in this country.” Organizers of the ceremony, led by local activists and Kameny friends Charles Francis and Bob Witeck, placed at one end of the coffin a picket sign that Kameny City Council members DAVID CATANIA and JIM GRAHAM and former Army Lt. The sign, still attached to its original wood stick handle, states, “Homosexuals Ask for the Right to the Pursuit of Happiness.” At the other end of the coffin stood a portrait of Kameny painted by local gay artist Don Patron. Norton, a leader of the black civil rights movement, said Kameny’s acts of “defiance” and “raw, pure undiluted courage” during the decades he fought oppression against LGBT people put him in a place similar to that of black civil rights legend Rosa Parks. Norton noted that Kameny began his fight for equality and justice for LGBT people shortly after he was fired for being gay from his job as an astronomer with the U.S. government in the late 1950s. “Frank Kameny no more set out to sacrifice his livelihood when he refused to deny his sexual orientation to federal authorities than Rosa Parks intended to give up her work as a seamstress when she refused to move to the back of the bus,” Norton said. “Rosa Parks got tired of suppressing her full identity and her full dignity. So did Frank Kameny,” said Norton, adding, “There is a special place in our country for people like Frank Kameny. The phrase he coined, ‘Gay is Good,’ is every bit as significant as Black is Beautiful.” Kameny died in his home Oct. 11 at the age of 86. Organizers of his memorial said a larger community memorial celebration of his life will take place Nov. 15 at a location to be announced. “He was a great man who made it possible for me to be who I am,” said Rick Wood, a D.C. gay activist who said Kameny helped him organize the city’s first gay youth group 25 years ago. “When I heard of Frank’s passing I was heartbroken but also grateful for the fearless and brave life that he led,” said Catania. “We’re all better off for having had Frank walk this earth. He changed minds and opened hearts to acceptance and tolerance in Washington and all over the world.” Graham, who said he got to know Kameny during Graham’s tenure as director of the Whitman-Walker Clinic, called Kameny an “extraordinary” figure on the Washington scene for half a century. “It is not possible to overstate the contribution that has been made by Frank Kameny for human rights, for gay and lesbian people and for everybody because, in point of fact, he was concerned about everybody,” Graham said. Rick Rosendall, vice president of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance and a friend and colleague of Kameny’s for more than 20 years, read from a chapter Kameny wrote for a book about the early “homophile movement” that was published during Kameny’s early years of activism. Kameny’s message in the book chapter was intended for a gay audience. “It’s time to open the closet door and let in the fresh air and the sunshine,” Rosendall quoted Kameny as saying. “It is time to doff and discard the secrecy, the disguise and the camouflage. It is time to hold up your heads and to look the world squarely in the eye as the homosexuals that you are, confident of your equality, confident in the knowledge that as objects of prejudice and victims of discrimination, you are right and they are wrong, and confident of the rightness of what you are and the goodness of what you do. It is time to live your homosexuality fully, joyously, openly and proudly, assured that morally, socially, physically, psychologically, emotionally, and in every other way — gay is good.” Joining the contingent of gay military pallbearers were four members of the D.C. Police Department’s Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit, who served as pallbearers at the conclusion of the ceremony. With participants and well-wishers lining the steps and plaza outside the Carnegie Library, the GLLU members and two of the gay military veterans carried Kameny’s coffin to a hearse on the street Kameny’s friends and activist colleagues said they arranged for Kameny’s body to be cremated, based on Kameny’s expressed wishes, shortly after his death on Oct. 11. An urn bearing his ashes had been placed in the coffin for the ceremony. Witeck said he and others close to Kameny had yet to decide on a burial site or other resting place for Kameny’s ashes. Forrest, who had been endorsed by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, was vying to become the first openly LGBT Republican to win election to a state legislature. He created a stir when he and his campaign accused the Howell campaign of using “gay baiting” tactics to discourage Republican voters from supporting him. His campaign identified a Democratic Party volunteer who admitted to a Forrest campaign worker that she told voters that Forrest was gay and would likely promote a “gay agenda” for the state’s public schools. Howell said the party volunteer was not part of her campaign and was dismissed from her role as a party canvasser when Howell learned of the allegation. Gay Democrats backing Howell complained that the Forrest campaign and the Victory Fund were unfairly linking Howell to the gay baiting claim. Terry Mansberger, chair of the Virginia Democratic Party’s LGBT Caucus, expressed concern that the Victory Fund’s support of Forrest was hurting LGBT rights efforts in the state because a win for Forrest and just one other Republican would lead to a GOP takeover of the State Senate. LGBT Democratic activists pointed out that a solid majority of Senate Democrats support LGBT rights. They noted that most Senate Republicans and Republican candidates seeking Senate seats strongly oppose LGBT rights initiatives and, in some cases, have advocated for anti-gay laws, including a bill to prohibit gays from adopting children. With the apparent loss of two other Democratic seats, Republicans were poised to win control of the Senate independently of Forrest’s race. Republicans control the House of Delegates. Ebbin has said his efforts to push LGBT supportive bills and block anti-gay measures would be in jeopardy if the State Senate flips from Democratic to Republican control in the 2012 legislative session. In another Virginia electoral contest, gay candidate Michael Sutphin appears to have won his race for a seat on the Blacksburg, Va., Town Council by a solid margin. With results in for nine out of the town’s 10 precincts as of early Wednesday morning, Sutphin came in second place in a race where five candidates were competing for three seats up for election. Sutphin is poised to become the first known openly gay candidate to win election to public office in a part of the state outside Northern Virginia, which is a D.C. suburb. In a hotly contested race on the other side of the country, gay former San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty was in seventh place in his bid to become San Francisco’s first out gay mayor. In a mayoral contest with 16 candidates, Dufty won just 4.7 percent of the “first choice” vote and was trailing far behind frontrunner Ed Lee, the incumbent mayor, who had 31.4 percent of the “first choice” vote. Under San Francisco’s “ranked choice” voting system, voters cast ballots for their first, second and third choice for mayor. If no candidate received at least 51 percent of the vote, the candidate with the least number of votes is eliminated and the city counts the second choice votes of that candidate. The process is repeated until a candidate obtains a 51 percent majority. Second place candidate John Avalos had 18.7 percent of first choice votes and third place candidate, City Attorney Dennis Herrera, had 11.3 percent of the first choice vote. Herrera, a strong supporter of LGBT rights, had been considered Dufty’s strongest competitor for LGBT votes. Dufty has said he expected the vote count to go to at least one or more rounds before someone emerged as the winner. He said he had a good shot at winning in a second or later round of vote counting. But observers say Lee remains the strong favorite to win a later round due to his strong showing in the “first choice” vote. Police Log The following incidents were investigated by D.C. Metropolitan Police’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit. • On Nov. 6 in the 1500 block of 17th St., N.W., a woman reported that she got into a verbal argument with the establishment’s bouncer after trying to take a beer outside. After a heated argument, the woman was barred. • On Nov. 7 in the 1500 block of Ogden St., N.W., two complainants reported that while on the elevator at the listed location, the elevator stopped on the second floor, at which time they were met by two males who appeared to be getting on the elevator. One of the men held the elevator door open but neither of the two suspects entered the elevator. One suspect brandished a knife as the elevator closed. The suspects fled the scene. • On Nov. 5 in the 5000 block of Just St. N.E., two complainants reported that a suspect came home intoxicated while they were trying to watch TV. One complainant asked the suspect to stop and move out of the way and he refused and continued to dance. The suspect became angry and pulled out a box cutter and threatened to kill the complainants. One of the complainants and the suspect reside together and in the past were involved in an intimate relationship. The suspect was arrested on scene. • On Nov. 2 the GLLU was contacted in reference to resources available for bullied youth. A caller was provided information about resources available from law enforcement as well as local government and non-profit organizations. • On Oct. 31 in the 3400 block of 22nd Street, S.E., a detective reported that a suspect assaulted a complainant due to an ongoing domestic dispute. The suspect struck the complainant about the body and when she fell to the ground the suspect continued assaulting her by kicking her. The suspect also threatened to kill the woman and her family members. The suspect fled the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. An assault report was taken. obituary THOMAS WADLOW, 86 Thomas Warren Wadlow died Oct. 28 at Washington Hospital Center from complications of pneumonia and heart disease, according to his partner of 20 years, Malek Zaarour. He was 86. Wadlow, who was gay, was born May 12, 1925 to Floyd and Eleanor Wadlow in Detroit. He had three sisters, Virginia, Suzanne and Colette. Wadlow attended seminary in New York but left to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Arizona in Tucson studying political science and French. He then moved to San Francisco where he lived for 18 years working as an archivist at the Federal Records Centers. He was previously married to Pauline Pappas, an opera singer, with whom he had seven children — Thomas, Monica, Lauren, Valerie, Lisa, Paul and Maria. The marriage ended in divorce. Wadlow moved to Washington in 1972 to be chief of records disposition for the National Archives. Among his accomplishments was the organization of old federal court records dating to the 18th century and a handbook on cataloging government archives that is used around the world. He enjoyed collecting art, traveling and listening to classical music. Plans are being made for a Mass and memorial service but no details were available at press time. Houston became America’s largest city with an openly gay mayor in 2009 with the election of Annise Parker, the former city controller. In Tuesday’s race, Parker faced five opponents, making her one-round majority victory a notable achievement. Parker will be eligible to campaign for one more two-year term after this term is up in 2013. Houston also elected to a brand new city council district openly gay attorney Mike Laster, the first openly gay man elected to city council, following Parker who became the first openly lesbian Houston City Council member in 1997. However, transgender Houston City Council candidate Jenifer Rene Pool did not join Parker and Laster in celebrating wins on Tuesday. Dem win preserves marriage rights in Iowa Mathis handily beats GOP opponent for Senate seat By CHRIS JOHNSON
[email protected] A Democratic candidate won a special election on Tuesday for a seat in the Iowa State Senate — a victory that will preserve marriage rights in the state. Liz Mathis, a former TV news anchor, won her bid to represent Iowa’s 18th District in the State Senate against Republican Cindy Golding, a businessperson. According to the Iowa Independent, Mathis claimed the seat by taking 55.8 percent of the vote compared to 43.5 percent won by Golding. Democrats held a narrow 25-24 majority in the State Senate. A Republican win would have resulted in a tie in the leadership vote and thrown control of the chamber into question. The race was of interest to LGBT advocates because Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal (D) has said a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage — instituted in Iowa by court order in 2009 — won’t come up as long he’s in control of the chamber. With him out of power, the Senate could have voted on a measure that the Republican-controlled House approved in February banning both samesex marriage and marriage-like unions. Golding said she would have voted in favor of the measure, which would have brought marriage rights for gay couples up to a vote before the electorate, while Mathis said she supports the court decision instituting marriage rights for same-sex couples. Troy Price, executive director of One Iowa, called Mathis’ win “a great victory for Iowans” in a statement. “Voters in this district clearly rejected the mean-spirited and misleading attacks of our opposition that we saw right up until the polls closed on Election Day,” Price said. “Instead, voters elected the candidate they felt would best move our state forward.” On the day of the election, a robocall was sent to voters saying Mathis “endorses homosexual marriage.” The call continued, “Homosexual marriage obviously involves homosexual sex. So, before you support Liz Mathis, call her … and ask her which homosexual sex acts she endorses.” Golding said her campaign had nothing to do with the robocalls. Price continued that although the election is over, the “battle is far from over” to preserve marriage rights in the Hawkeye State. “Now, the focus turns to the coming LIZ MATHIS, a former TV news anchor, won her bid to represent Iowa’s 18th District in the State Senate. PHOTO COURTESY OF MATHIS Holyoke elects nation’s youngest gay mayor HOLYOKE, Mass. — A Springfield suburb of nearly 40,000 people elected the nation’s youngest openly gay mayor Tuesday. Alex Morse, 22, is a graduate of Brown University with a degree in urban studies, and — according to his campaign site — is the first college graduate in his family. According to the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, Morse founded ‘Holyoke for All,’ the city’s first LGBT non-profit organization, and was a member of the Massachusetts Governor’s LGBT Commission. Morse was also mentored by former Providence, R.I. Mayor and current Congressman David Cicilline. Also Tuesday night, Chatham Borough, N.J. elected Bruce Harris mayor. He is likely the nation’s first openly gay, African-American Republican mayor, according to the Victory Fund. Lesbian prevails in Charlotte Council race CHARLOTTE — LaWana Mayfield made history Tuesday night, becoming the first openly LGBT city council member in Charlotte history. According to North Carolina LGBT newspaper, QNotes, Democrat Mayfield defeated Republican Ed Toney 78-22 percent. She defeated controversial incumbent Democrat Warren Turner, who had been accused of sexual harassment last year by several female city employees. In addition to Mayfield’s election, LGBT blog Pam’s House Blend is reporting anti-gay Durham N.C. mayoral candidate, Pastor Sylvester Williams was soundly defeated by incumbent Bill Bell. Williams is a major backer of an expected 2012 ballot initiative amending the N.C. Constitution to ban marriage for same-sex couples, and campaigned on a strong anti-gay platform. Traverse City to retain LGBT non-bias ordinance TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Residents of the northwest Michigan resort town of Traverse City voted by a 2-to-1 margin to retain a nondiscrimination ordinance containing explicit protections for LGBT citizens. “The people of Traverse City have sent a clear message that they value their LGBT friends, neighbors, co-workers and family members and don’t want to see them left vulnerable to discrimination,” National Gay and Lesbian Task Force executive director, Rea Carey, said in a statement. “This victory creates a stronger and more welcoming city not only for LGBT people and their families, but for everyone.” Gay candidates win big in local elections WASHINGTON — A slew of LGBT election night wins swept the nation Tuesday night, with key city council wins in a handful of states. LGBT activists are calling Michael Smith’s defeat of Largo, Fla., incumbent city commissioner Mary Gray Black a double sweet victory. Black led an effort to fire transgender former city manager Susan Stanton, who had been city manager for more than 14 years until her 2007 termination after announcing she was transitioning. The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund also announced the election of Fundendorsed candidate and out lesbian, Caitlin Copple to the Missoula, Mont. City Council, defeating an incumbent who voted against an LGBT non-discrimination ordinance. Also winning city council elections Tuesday night were openly gay candidates Chris Seelbach in Cincinnati and Ryan Mello in Tacoma, Wash. legislative session where we fully expect the opponents of equality to redouble their efforts to take away the rights of loving, committed gay and lesbian couples,” Price said. “One Iowa will be there to stand up for marriage equality at every turn, and we are excited to work with the fair-minded Senate majority to ensure that freedom and equality remains in the heart of the heartland.” In the wake of the election, national LGBT groups praised Mathis’ win and said her victory means voters were able to reject anti-gay attacks and elect a fairminded candidate. Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry, called the election of the Democratic candidate “a tremendous victory for the state of Iowa.” “The voters rebuffed the anti-gay attacks that sought to make undoing the freedom to marry a critical factor in the race, and instead elected a candidate who supports the freedom to marry for all Iowa families,” Wolfson said. Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, also praised the win in a statement. “The marriage issue is settled, voters clearly care about issues directly affecting their everyday lives,” Solmonese said. “Today’s election serves as a message that it’s time to get on with the people’s business.” Both anti-gay and pro-LGBT national groups had a role in producing the election results. On the anti-gay side, the National Organization for Marriage launched an independent expenditure campaign in favor of Golding and distributed mailers highlighting both candidates’ positions on marriage. Golding also accepted an endorsement from the anti-gay Family Research Council. According to a statement, HRC endorsed Mathis and placed five fulltime field organizers in the district during the final weeks of the campaign. These organizers performed campaign duties for the state Democratic Party and mobilized residents in the district to volunteer and vote in the special election. [email protected] Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Tuesday that the Obama administration has appointed lesbian comedian and television personality Ellen DeGeneres as the U.S. Special Envoy for Global AIDS Awareness. In a speech outlining U.S. policy on global AIDS issues at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., Clinton said DeGeneres’ connection with a large television audience would make her especially well suited to promote U.S. AIDS policies at home and abroad. “Ellen is going to bring not only her sharp wit and her big heart, but her impressive TV audience and more than 8 million followers on Twitter, to raise awareness and support for this effort,” Clinton said. “I know we can look forward to many contributions from Ellen and her loyal fans across the globe.” The State Department released a letter that Clinton sent earlier to DeGeneres discussing why the Obama administration Secretary of State HILLARY CLINTON announced this week that Ellen DeGeneres will serve as a U.S. envoy to promote global AIDS awareness. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go look up what ‘envoy’ means.” In her speech, Clinton discussed U.S. plans going forward to fight AIDS on the international front through the U.S. programs started during the Bush administration and continued by Obama called the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR. When President George W. Bush proposed the program in 2003 he called for Congress to approve $30 billion for international AIDS assistance for mostly developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean over a five-year period. Clinton noted that when the program started, only 50,000 people in Sub-Saharan Africa were receiving life-saving antiretroviral medication and other AIDSrelated drugs. Now, more than 5 million people receive such drugs as well as an additional one million people in other parts of the world through PEPFAR and the United Nations initiated Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, Clinton said. She said the goal of the Obama administration is to bring about an “AIDSfree generation” across the globe. “Now, by an AIDS-free generation, I mean one where, first, virtually no children are born with the virus; second, as these children become teenagers and adults, they are at far lower risk of becoming infected than they would be today thanks to a wide range of prevention tools,” she said. “And third, if they do acquire HIV, they have access to treatment that helps prevent them from developing AIDS and passing the virus on to others.” Among other things, Clinton said PEPFAR would fund programs in Africa and other locations that promote “voluntary medical male circumcision,” which she said studies show has lowered the risk of female-to-male transmission of HIV by 60 percent. Clinton did not mention in her speech specific budget figures the Obama administration has proposed for funding PEPFAR in fiscal year 2012 and beyond or the amount of funds the U.S. plans to contribute to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Some U.S. and international AIDS organizations have criticized the Obama administration for not expanding the funding for the two entities as much as the president promised he would at the time he took office in January 2009. Clinton noted in her NIH speech that while budget constraints are always a concern during the current economic environment, the U.S. has contributed far more than any other country to international AIDS relief programs, both through PEPFAR and the Global Fund. [email protected] Second lady Jill Biden emphasized acceptance and support in a speech last week against school bullying before an audience largely made up of parents of LGBT youth. “There is a direct connection between acceptance and positive, healthy outcomes in every important area of life, including education, mental health, and physical health,” Biden said. Biden, an educator at Northern Virginia Community College and wife of Vice President Joseph Biden, made the remarks during the opening ceremony for PFLAG’s 2011 national convention, which took place at the Westin Alexandria. PFLAG is an organization that aims to provide a voice for the parents, family and friends of LGBT people. Amid news stories of gay youths committing suicide after they had been bullied because of their sexual orientation, Biden stressed the importance of instilling a sense of self-confidence in children as they head through their teen years. She said this harassment “makes it almost impossible for students to concentrate on their school work.” Biden said “no child should be subjected” to the kind of bullying that would lead them to commit suicide and “no parent should suffer that horrific loss.” In addition to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal and passing hate crimes legislation, Biden touted the work the Obama administration has done for LGBT youth, such as holding a White House summit on bullying and issuing guidance to schools to combat student harassment and support gay-straight alliances. “This progress is important, but there is still more to do,” Biden said. “At this critical time for education in our country, we need to ensure that our schools are producing the next generation of American leaders and heroes. We must insure that our classrooms are safer for all students to learn, grow, and thrive.” Biden’s speech was well received by those in attendance at the convention. An estimated 300 attendees from across the country took part in events after participating Thursday in a lobby day on Capitol Hill. Jody Huckaby, PFLAG’s executive director, said Biden’s message “connected the dots” between acceptance and support and “positive mental health and education outcomes.” “Spending so many years in the classroom, [she] really recognizes when she’s got a student who is LGBT or thinks that they might be that — when the family is accepting — there’s a much, much higher likelihood that they’re going to have a positive education outcome,” Huckaby said. Rustin Furlow, a gay 21-year-old from Lubbock, Texas, said he thought Biden’s speech was “inspirational” and he related to her remarks about student harassment. “Growing up I experienced bullying,” Furlow said. “Just to hear someone of that caliber mention bullying — it made me feel like people are hearing that — do understand the problem. [email protected] A Senate committee approved unanimously by voice vote last week a judicial nominee who could become the fourth openly gay person to sit on the federal bench. Michael Walter Fitzgerald, whom President Obama nominated in July, was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee as part of a group of nominees. Fitzgerald is the fourth out federal judicial nominee chosen by the White House. Upon confirmation, he would take a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and would be the first openly gay federal judge in that state. Michael Cole-Schwartz, spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, commended the panel for moving forward with the nomination. “Moving Michael Fitzgerald’s nomination to the Senate floor is a positive step toward confirming a dedicated legal talent,” Cole-Schwartz said. “We urge the full Senate to confirm him and help make the bench more representative of the diversity of the American public.” When the full Senate will take up the Fitzgerald nomination remains in question. The Senate is currently is facing a backlog of judicial nominees on the Senate floor who haven’t yet received votes. Erica Chabot, a Senate Judiciary Committee spokesperson, said 22 nominations were already pending on the floor before the committee approved Fitzgerald and other nominees last week. “This nomination will join those and the others reported today on the floor,” Chabot said. “Sen. Leahy has been very clear about his concerns with how long nominations are pending on the floor after being reported by the committee.” The Fitzgerald nomination was recommended to Obama by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), who also praised the committee for advancing the Fitzgerald nomination and called for swift confirmation on the Senate floor. “I am so pleased that the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved Michael Fitzgerald’s nomination to serve on the federal bench,” Boxer said. “He is a highly respected attorney whose sharp intellect and experience as a former federal prosecutor and attorney in private practice will make him an outstanding judge. It is now critical that the Senate move swiftly to confirm him so he can begin serving the people of the Central District.” According to Boxer’s office, Fitzgerald has tried 26 cases to verdict, and the overwhelming majority were before a jury. About 60 percent of his practice is in federal court. Fitzgerald was given a review by the American Bar Association, which gave him a rating of “unanimously well-qualified.” Prior to joining Corbin, Fitzgerald & Athey LLP in 1998, Fitzgerald worked at the Law Offices of Robert L. Corbin PC and at the law firm of Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe. Fitzgerald also served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles, where he handled criminal cases, such as a drug and money laundering case involving what at that time was the second-largest cocaine seizure in California. Fitzgerald wrote in his questionnaire response to the committee that he served as a volunteer making telephone calls or knocking on doors for political campaigns, including President Obama’s 2008 campaign and the 2008 campaign against Proposition 8. Fitzgerald is also a member of the Harvard-Radcliffe Gay & Lesbian Caucus. From 2007 to 2008, he served on the leadership task force for the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. In the 1990s, he was a member of the Stonewall Democratic Club. The gay judicial nominee is no stranger to representing clients in cases related to LGBT rights. Fitzgerald was involved in the settlement of Buttino v. FBI, the 1993 class-action lawsuit involving Frank Buttino, a gay FBI specialist who was anonymously outed to his superior, resulting in the removal of his security clearance and subsequent firing. When Kameny and others sat down at the start of that meeting, held at the Hay Adams Hotel on Aug. 1, 1961, Kameny quickly discovered the gathering had been infiltrated by Louis Fouchette, the head of the Perversion Section of the D.C. Police Department’s Morals Division. “Fouchette was identified, exposed, and left the meeting,” Rainbow History Project reports in one of its papers on the Mattachine Society of Washington. Kameny told the Blade years later that he and others attending the August 1961 meeting viewed Fouchette’s visit, and the fact that he learned of plans to form a gay group before it even held its first meeting, as a chilling reminder of the work that lay ahead for the group. In part because Mattachine’s organizers knew that discovery by authorities, including police, of someone’s status as a gay person would almost certainly lead to the loss of their job, the group adopted a bylaw making it mandatory that all members except Kameny use a pseudonym to identify themselves publicly. The pseudonyms would also be used on Mattachine’s membership list. Among those complying with this requirement were Mattachine members Nichols, who later went on to become an accomplished author, journalist and out gay activist; Robert King; Lilli Vincenz, Paul Kuntzler, Eva Freund; Ron Balin; and Jon Swanson, according to Rainbow History’s reports on the group. Each of them played a key role in Mattachine Society of Washington’s groundbreaking work, including the group’s first-ever homosexual rights protest demonstrations in the 1960s at the White House, Pentagon, Civil Service Commission and other government buildings. Kuntzler later co-founded the D.C. Gay Activist Alliance, which later became the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, and the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, two of D.C.’s leading LGBT advocacy organizations that continue to operate today. Back in 1961, Kameny chose to use his real name in connection with the Mattachine Society of Washington because he already suffered what he believed to be the irreversible consequences surrounding his firing in 1958 from his job as a civilian astronomer at the U.S. Army Map Service after authorities discovered he was gay. “He knew he was essentially blacklisted for life in his profession as an astronomer, where, at the time, everybody knew each other in that profession,” said author and Kameny biographer David Carter. “So he had nothing to lose.” Carter, who interviewed Kameny extensively during the past several years, said Kameny told him he chose to be one of the few “out” gays at the time following his unsuccessful but highly acclaimed appeal of his firing to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1961, the Supreme Court denied his petition and upheld a lower court decision that refused to back a Kameny lawsuit seeking to force the U.S. Civil Service Commission to overturn his firing. The lawsuit and his petition to the Supreme Court marked the first known time a gay person had challenged the U.S. government policy of refusing to hire and automatically firing gay people from federal government employment in any capacity or position. Kameny’s 61-page Supreme Court petition, which is now part of the Kameny Papers collection at the Library of Congress, is viewed today by historians as the first comprehensive gay rights manifesto in the United States. Carter, who is writing Kameny’s biography, said the Supreme Court petition became the founding principles used by Mattachine Society of Washington to carry out its work calling for equality and non-discrimination for homosexuals in employment and a wide range of other areas. understanding of homosexuals, with most agreeing with the then prevailing view by psychiatric professionals that homosexuality was a mental disorder. In some cases the Mattachines were believed to have been given liberty to speak frankly to the ruling monarch on matters that others were forbidden to discuss. Organizers said the event will take place at 4:30 p.m. in Room 345, which is the building’s main caucus room. The congressional hosts of the event include D.C. Congressional Delegate Eleanor Homes Norton (D-D.C.) and the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus members Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.), Jared Polis (D-Colo.) and David Cicilline (D-R.I.). “Friends and allies of Dr. Kameny, and members of the general public, need no invitation to attend this service on Capitol Hill, capacity permitting,” organizers said in a statement. “This spacious and historic venue was made available through the generous support from leaders of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, allies in LGBT equality and national service.” Members of Congress and officials with the Obama administration are expected to be among the speakers at the event, said co-organizer Bob Witeck, a longtime friend and colleague of Kameny’s. Witeck said the event will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kameny’s role as co-founder of the Mattachine Society of Washington, the city’s first gay rights group. One year from now, we return to the polls A look back at candidate Obama’s 2008 words and promises Despite the GOP’s sorry homophobic record, a solid 25 percent or more of gay voters regularly support the Republican presidential candidate on Election Day. As we start the process of evaluating Obama’s record in preparation for November 2012, it’s instructive to look back at candidate Obama’s 2008 promises and words. Back then, in September 2008, Obama granted the Blade an interview in which he outlined his views. A few highlights follow. Obama: • criticized President Bush’s record on combating the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic and promised to implement a “comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies.” • promised to “make sure the voices of LGBT people are heard in the White House” and criticized Bush for eliminating the position of liaison to the LGBT community. • vowed to “work to pass a fully inclusive version” of ENDA and to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act and to enact a federal hate crimes law inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity. How does Obama’s record stack up? As Obama noted in his interview, much of what he hoped to accomplish hinged on Democratic control of Congress and its priorities. Obama and the Democrats succeeded in passing the hate crimes expansion and, with key Republican support, in repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” ENDA, sadly, is another matter. It stalled amid assertions that then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi didn’t want to subject conservative Democrats to more than one gay-related vote at a time. When “Don’t Ask” repeal turned into the drawn out debacle it did, scheduling an ENDA vote was a non-starter as the clock ran out. Congress should have adopted a more aggressive posture on ENDA and taken better advantage of its large Democratic majorities early in Obama’s term. Once the Republicans retook the House, proLGBT initiatives were dead in the water. DOMA repeal never happened, either, but Obama’s Justice Department took the bold and welcome step of refusing to defend the statute in court. On other promises, Obama did lay out a national HIV/AIDS strategy after holding 14 town hall events in cities around the country that drew several thousand attendees. The strategy is LGBT-inclusive from the very first page in which sexual orientation and gender identity are included in the vision statement. Unfortunately, the nation’s AIDS Drug Assistance Programs have seen a spike in patients stuck on waiting lists. The ADAP waiting lists made national headlines last summer, when, for the first time, the number of people on such lists topped 9,000. ADAP is part of the federal Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program authorized by Congress. Obama has appointed a record number of openly LGB and, yes, even T people to administration positions, most notably John Berry as head of the Office of Personnel Management. DNC official Brian Bond was named to the role of LGBT liaison, though his job was broader than just LGBT concerns. Bond left that post and Gautam Raghavan took over last month. Perhaps more importantly, Obama has included LGBT issues in his broader agenda, including extending hospital visitation rights to partners of LGBT patients. One of the most memorable and impactful moments I’ve been fortunate to witness during his term occurred during Obama’s 2009 Pride month commemoration at the White House. In remarks to LGBT attendees, Obama said, “Welcome to your house.” It was a simple gesture, but one that made a huge impact on those in the room, including me. And it neatly sums up Obama’s approach. We are part of his agenda and welcome in his administration. The same cannot be said of the Republican field, with the possible exception of Jon Hunstman, who’s mired in the back of the pack and last week polled at just 2 percent support in Iowa. But this isn’t a Bill Clinton/John Kerry moment in which LGBT people are stuck voting for the Democrat not because they are true advocates but because the alternative is so much worse. This time around, in Barack Obama, LGBT voters have a presidential candidate who truly supports them and backs up the words with action. Is Obama perfect? Of course not. But he’s battled a severe recession, multiple wars and an opposition party that has said its No. 1 goal is not to fix the economy or find jobs but rather to limit Obama to one term. In that environment, Obama has performed well on LGBT issues and will surely endorse marriage equality in 2013. The Republican nominee remains to be determined, but if it’s any of the announced candidates, then voters concerned about LGBT equality will have an easy decision one year from now. It seems like just yesterday that Barack Obama took the stage in Chicago’s Grant Park after handily defeating John McCain to win the White House. Obama’s victory represented a historic and iconic moment. And, for the first time, LGBT Americans were along for the ride in a meaningful way. Indeed, one of the Obama administration’s first acts was to post an LGBT section to the official White House website almost immediately upon Obama taking the oath of office. Since then, Obama has mostly honored his promises and commitments to LGBT voters and his support has grown from the symbolic (White House website upgrades) to the bold (refusing to defend DOMA). Three years later, the 2012 campaign is already well underway, with fundraisers, GOP debates, wildly swinging polls and scandals of the week playing out. Sadly, as Obama and his administration have rolled out pro-LGBT advances — and as Obama himself slowly inches toward an inevitable embrace of marriage equality — his GOP counterparts have moved backward. From Michele Bachmann’s twisted endorsement of “reparative therapy” to Herman Cain’s schizophrenic views on marriage to Mitt Romney’s laughable flip-flops on our issues, the GOP still doesn’t get it. Just three years after Sen. John McCain granted an interview to the Blade — a first for a Republican presidential nominee — and spoke movingly of his gay role models, the GOP hopefuls aspire to roll back the clock and reinstate “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and push for a federal ban on same-sex marriage. Kameny’s more than 50 years of fighting for the rights of the LGBT community and the work of so many others have brought our struggle to a place where we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We can envision a time when we will have the right to marry and full civil and human rights everywhere, not just in a few states or localities. As with the fight for black civil and human rights and women’s rights, there comes a time when you feel victory is around the corner and the tide is with you. But as in those movements there are always those that want to reverse that tide. Those that want to keep you in your place or in the closet. Those that look back and say weren’t times better before people began to fight for their rights? Today we have lunatic author Ann Coulter, anti-Semitic arch-conservative Patrick Buchanan, and the majority of the Republican presidential field telling the LGBT community, women and African Americans that we should go back to the old days. Their collective lack of understanding of what the right side of history will be is always frightening and often sad. It is frightening because they still have an audience who believe them and sad because they are still have a platform for their vitriol. Republicans have a leading presidential candidate spending days prevaricating over whether he sexually harassed women and 70 percent of GOP voters say they don’t have a problem with it. Many of those voters would rather attack the media for talking about this than the candidate for his actions and response. That is the sad state of the national Republican Party today. Democrats have their own dinosaurs and many in the Democratic Party share views that put them on the wrong side of history. That is why it is crucial to look at both the party and the individual as we move into the 2012 elections. People need to understand how Congress works. The first vote that any elected member of Congress has is the vote for their leadership. Today the Democratic leadership in Congress, even if not all the members of the party, supports moving us toward the right side of history. The Republican leadership, co-opted by the Tea Party and the extreme right wing, would rather move us back into the dark ages. It appears that the moderate wing of the Republican Party is gone — the Alan Simpsons, Nelson Rockefellers, even the Christie Todd Whitmans. The fight for our rights and for the heart of our nation makes the 2012 elections so important. For women, African Americans, Latinos and the LGBT community, our stake in this election is about our future. But it is also the about the future of our children and theirs. It is not only about how jobs will be created but whether we will be able to get those jobs. It is about fair immigration laws and passing ENDA. It is about our ability to fully participate in society and in the economy. It is continuing to march forward for civil and human rights for everyone. If the legacies of Frank Kameny, Martin Luther King, Jr., Bella Abzug and so many others are to survive and be fully honored, we need to unite. We need to speak out and participate in the process because if we don’t we could see the victories that they fought for over 50 years recede or even be wiped out. That would be a travesty of justice and we cannot let it happen. We must make sure that those who are elected in 2012 will be on the right side of history. It is crucial for us to judge candidates and parties to determine whether they are on the right side of history. Today the Republican Party and the majority of its candidates are proving they are on the wrong side. The only candidate for the Republican presidential nomination who dares support civil unions, Jon Huntsman, is at 1 percent in recent polls. The may- VIEWPOINT Transgender, black and victimized Study offers eye-opening look at black trans life By REV. IRENE MONROE It’s not easy for any person of African descent to be LGBTQ in our black communities, but our transgender brothers and sisters might feel the most discrimination. The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), in collaboration with the National Gay and Lesbian task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) released a groundbreaking study in September called “Injustice at Every Turn: A Look at Black Respondents in the National Transgender Discrimination Survey,” exposing both the structural and individual racism transgender people of color confront. The study is a supplement to the national study Injustice at “Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey.” Because misinformation about transgender people in our country is rampant and egregiously offensive, its impact is deleterious. Transphobia in black communities has left these members of our community especially vulnerable. The statistics are stark: Black transgender people had an extremely high unemployment rate at 26 percent, two times the rate of the overall transgender sample and four times the rate of the general population. A startling 41 percent of black respondents said they had experienced homelessness at some point in their lives, more than five times the rate of the general U.S. population. Black transgender people lived in extreme poverty with 34 percent reporting a household income of less than $10,000 per year. This is more than twice the rate for transgender people of all races (15 percent), four times the general black population rate (9 percent), and eight times the general U.S. population rate (4 percent). Black transgender people were affected by HIV in devastating numbers. More than one-fifth of respondents were living with HIV (20.23 percent), compared to a rate of 2.64 percent for transgender respondents of all races, 2.4 percent for the general black population and 0.60 percent of the general U.S. population. Half of black respondents who attended school expressing a transgender identity or gender non-conformity reported facing harassment. Nearly half (49 percent) of black respondents reported having attempted suicide. On a positive note, many black transgender people who were out to their families reported that their families were as strong as before they came out. Black respondents reported this experience at a higher rate than the overall sample of transgender respondents. Adding insult to injury is the lack of recognition our trans brothers and sisters receive for their contributions to our community. If any recognition is doled out, it is usually posthumously. For example, the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an international event memorializing transgender people murdered because of their gender identities or gender expressions. The purpose of TDOR is to raise public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people and to honor their lives that might otherwise be forgotten. This event is held every November and honors Rita Hester, a 34-yearold black trans individual who was murdered in her home just outside of Boston on Nov. 28, 1998. The crime kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project. Black transphobia, in this present-day and in its present form, many opine, has a lot to do with the social alienation from the dominate white LGBTQ community and the cultural and religious isolation from the African-American community. Trans brothers and sisters have not been the “other.” Black drag balls and then “drag houses” or “drag families,” as seen in Jennie Livingston’s 1990 documentary film “Paris Is Burning,” were comprised of primarily African-American and transgender Latinos who lived in their communities. Their performance at drag balls illustrate how race, class and varying ranges of gender identities and expressions, deconstruct notions of masculinity, and redefine what it is means to be a diva. During the 1920s in Harlem, the renowned Savoy Ballroom and the Rockland Palace hosted drag ball extravaganzas with prizes awarded for the best costumes. Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes depicted the balls as “spectacles of color.” And with constant harassment by white policemen patrolling the neighborhood, making the trans community their conspicuous target along with public denouncements of them by black ministers, Harlem’s trans community was, nonetheless, unrelenting with their drag balls. The study “Injustice at Every Turn: A Look at Black Respondents in the National Transgender Discrimination Survey” gives us just a small window into the everyday lived reality of my transgender brothers and sisters. [email protected] Neo-soul trendsetter to play Birchmere for first time in a decade She exudes an easygoing and laid back vibe during a phone interview this week, discussing her new album, her philosophies of concert giving — don’t expect hits! — and her formative years in Washington. “I’m enjoying my nice, settled married life,” Ndegeocello says with a soft chuckle. “It’s great up here. I can work here but if I need to go into New York [City], I can just hop on a train and be there two hours later.” “Weather,” produced by Grammy winner Joe Henry (Aimee Mann, Solomon Burke, Ani DiFranco), was recorded in 10 days in Los Angeles, mostly because hotel accommodations are easier there. The quick pace — five days of music, five days of vocals — works well for her, she says. “I think it enhances the immediacy of it,” Ndegeocello says. “I’m really comfortable with it. I still believe in live music and music that comes from your hands. I don’t want to sit around and edit myself in pro tools and make somebody’s idea of perfection. I’m really into the David Bowie productions in Germany, you know, really traditional instruments but played in a really modern way. That was my goal.” The process has resulted in a low-key album a Washington Post review said incorporated “a palette of small, delicate sounds” used “to powerful effect.” It also noted, “the only constants in [her] 20-plus-year career … are brilliance and an output that dependably moves back and forth between experimental, critically acclaimed projects and more CONTINUES ON PAGE 31 It’s hard to say what the first thing that pops in someone’s head is when they hear Meshell Ndegeocello’s name — the John Mellencamp duet (“Wild Night”)? Her rap on Madonna’s “I’d Rather Be Your Lover”? Her endless soundtrack contributions? Or maybe her own memorable songs like “If That’s Your Boyfriend (He Wasn’t Last Night)” or “Leviticus: Faggot”? Regardless, Ndegeocello has established an adventuresome, restless musical persona that gives listeners the impression she’s out at inner city music clubs into the wee hours every night in hot pursuit of something to sate her seemingly endless sonic wanderlust. But in reality the 43-year-old D.C.-area native is living happily in upstate New York with her wife of five years, Alison Riley, and their son who turned 2 this week. Her new album “Weather” dropped this week and is earning raves. She left Thursday for a mini-tour that will bring her to the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va., Tuesday (it’s sold out) and also to Philadelphia and the Hiro Ballroom in New York. In January, she’ll resume with dates in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Minneapolis. I came out in 1995. My dad was the hardest to tell, being from the panhandle of Nebraska, but he took it pretty well. WHO’S YOUR LGBT HERO? Larry Slagle. He’s a dear friend who’s been out since the 1950s. He reminds me how important it is to maintain perspective — that there was once a time when being out could be hazardous to one’s career or life, and how far we’ve come in so short a time. WHAT’S WASHINGTON’S BEST NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT? I tend to like places that are quality drinking establishments, where they make the cocktails by hand rather than the soda gun, and where the music isn’t too loud to talk. I’m awfully fond of The Passenger in Mount Vernon, as well as Bar Pilar on 14th Street. Nightclubs aren’t so much my thing — I can’t seem to stay awake past 11. DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING. Maybe something fun and frugal, like a weekend in Provincetown with close friends. WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT? History. I’ve got a long list of book topics I’d like to write, all historic nonfiction. WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME WOULD YOU CHANGE? The assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He’s my favorite president, and for a man who had only served as a one-term congressman, he turned out to be a remarkable wartime leader with a real vision for the country. He held the Union together against pro-slavery forces that wanted to tear it apart. I really wish he could have lived and seen through his vision for Reconstruction. WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE POP CULTURE MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME? The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. I had spent the year before in Germany at a German armed forces officers college in Hamburg. I had traveled a number of times to East Germany and seen how oppressive the communist regime was. That the wall would come down through nonviolent resistance was simply stunning. ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST? That we be see the humanity in all of God’s children, including people you don’t really like or would even consider an enemy. WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK POST OR TWEET? “Reading a book – one with pages. So anachronistic.” IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT WOULD THE TITLE BE? “Throwing Spaghetti at a Wall: My Life as a Writer” IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY TO CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? No way. And miss the off-chance that Ricky Martin might need a step-father for his children?! WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND THE PHYSICAL WORLD? Is there an afterlife? I hope, but who honestly knows? I’m Christian (I go to Foundry UMC), but am increasingly agnostic the more I learn about the actual origins of the church. … But I’ve seen enough things in my life that I can’t quite explain, and while I have doubts, I’m willing to let God have the benefit of my doubts. And yeah, I see a book about this in my future. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT MOVEMENT LEADERS? Don’t despair, whatever setbacks come our way. We’re going to win this. WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS HOT COALS FOR? Publishing books is akin to walking across hot coals. It’s not something you do overnight or over a month, but over years. It is a struggle. But it is oh so totally worth it. WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS YOU MOST? That all of us have toy dogs like pugs and coddle them like children. [email protected] Author Garrett Peck had drastically different experiences writing his two Prohibition-themed books. “The Prohibition Hangover: Alcohol in America from Demon Rum to Cult Cabernet,” his 2009 work, took six years. He wrote it first, then found a publisher. But the follow-up, “Prohibition in Washington, D.C.: How Dry We Weren’t,” was done in six weeks and came out in March. Obviously he had a good running start on the topic from the first book, but it was still a mammoth undertaking. “There’s nothing like a deadline to focus you,” he says. “This was around last Thanksgiving, so there went my Christmas, but I’m actually really happy with the way it turned out.” Look for him Tuesday at the National Press Club for its annual “Book Fair and Authors’ Night” on Tuesday when he and about 90 other authors will sell and sign their latest books. It’s at 5:30 p.m. in the ballroom. Tickets are $5 at the door and the public is welcome. And yes, Peck enjoys drinking himself. His favorites vary by season and the meal at hand. It good be whisky, a Manhattan or beer. “I couldn’t pick a favorite,” he says. “It’s like asking for my favorite ice cream or favorite song. I like too many to choose a favorite.” The 43-year-old Sacramento, Calif., native works as a market analyst for Verizon by day, though he’d love to write full time if possible. He says the publishing industry is in too much flux for that to be realistic. For now, he’s happy to “just keep getting published.” He came to the area for grad school 17 years ago and stayed. Peck is single and lives in Arlington. He enjoys traveling, hiking, yoga and cooking in his free time. With “The Golden Dragon,” Germany’s most-produced playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig makes the concept of globalization relatable by overlapping the tough lives of economic refugees with those who live (sometimes literally) on top of them but never really see them. While a lot of what Schimmelpfennig portrays is very comic, he’s also not afraid to reveal the seamier side of a shrinking planet whose people meet on a less-than-even playing field. At 80 minutes, this funny/disturbing work is centered on the lives of those who live and toil in one particular urban building. Through deftly drawn, quick paced, surprising scenes, various stories unfold. On the first floor there’s a Chinese/ Thai/Vietnamese restaurant (the Golden Dragon). In its tiny kitchen five Asians busily turn out various dishes whose ingredients — ginger, chicken, button mushrooms, etc. — they mechanically pronounce aloud. Occasionally the youngest among them howls in pain from a horrendous toothache. Because he’s an undocumented worker with no money, a dentist is out of the question. Instead, the kitchen’s male elder addresses the problem with a pair of red-handled pliers. In the apartments above the Golden Dragon other dramas play out: A straight couple’s marriage hits the rocks hard; an old man mourns the loss of his youth and virility; a young couple deals with an unwanted pregnancy; and a creepy shopkeeper tragically shares his Asian sex slave. For this tight and well executed Studio Theatre production (the play’s U.S. premiere), gay director Serge Seiden brings together an especially diverse cast of three men and two women who cross age, race and gender to play 16 characters. Using a few props (including woks and spatulas) and minimal costumes (paper hats and hand bags), they adroitly move and switch roles through the play’s many brief-but-often-intense scenes. The phenomenal pacing and precise staging isn’t easy, but for press matinee the talented ensemble was definitely on point, working together as if the show were much further into its five-week run. Local favorite Sarah Marshall (who’s gay) effectively plays a wide range of characters from maternal old cook to sleazy middleaged man. Also featured are Amir Darvish (well known for playing the late gay rock star Freddie Mercury in an acclaimed offBroadway one-man show), Joseph Anthony Foronda, KK Moggie and Chris Myers. The design team is terrific too. Michael Giannitti’s lighting ingeniously alters Debra Booth’s gray blank slate set. At one point, he recreates that specific lighting found on a transatlantic flight when most passengers are still asleep and someone opens their window shade, allowing a stream of glaring morning sun to enter the cabin; and later he captures the nocturnal glow of the street lamp seen from a darkened apartment. Though set in Europe, Schimmelpfennig’s play is, of course, entirely relevant here too. His writing and Seiden’s fine production are both thought provoking and not easily forgotten. Endurance performance Out gay Cirque vet headlining new ‘Quidam’ show By STEVE FOX Mark Ward always knew he wanted to be out professionally. The Cirque Du Soleil vet plays the ringmaster in the company’s latest show “Quidam,” which comes to the Verizon Center next week. Ward says coming out is an individual choice that each person should make for himself. He joined Cirque du Soleil as a performer in 1993. Not wanting to keep aspects of his life hidden, Ward let the company know that he wanted to be out. He says that there was never an issue with the hiring managers and that the company was supportive from the start. He says he always wanted “to lead an authentic life.” “I think that it’s an individual journey, so I couldn’t say that it’s good or bad [to come out],” he says. “I just know that as far as people — gay and lesbian people — accepting themselves, that’s a personal journey. My time may not be your time. If I saw someone and I felt like, ‘Oh you shouldn’t be in the closet, you shouldn’t be hiding yourself,’ I think that’s wrong of me because I got in that person’s shoes. I like to support that person, try to give them the tools they would need to come out and not be hidden or behind the veil, of course, but I think that’s an individual journey, I really do.” Since joining Cirque, Ward has performed in about 6,500 Cirque shows, without missing a single performance. “For me, the challenging thing is also the thing that has kept me around for this amount of time,” he says. “I have to be in constant communication with the audience and I have to be adaptable ... what works in Milwaukee, when I come to D.C., may not get the same responses. I have to be open to the public and the information they are feeding me. So I have to have a keen sense of awareness. That keeps me focused.” In “Quidam,” Ward plays ringleader John, guiding the audience through the performances that tell the story of Zoé, a young girl searching for something more to her life. Her parents, distant and apathetic, ignore her. To her, life has lost meaning. Seeking to fill the void of her existence, she slides into an imaginary world — the world of Quidam — where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul. The international cast of “Quidam” features 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and characters. This being his first time to Washington, Ward is looking forward to catching up with local friends and exploring Washington. “I’m first hoping to go out and eat at some really cool places ... and I’ll probably just run myself ragged trying to see everything.” “Quidam” is at the Verizon Center from Nov. 16-20 for eight performances. It’s the whole symbolism of it,” Stuart says. “What happens is ... you’re standing on shoes, there’s a leather jacket in front of you ... the door opens every once and a while and light flashes in your eyes ... they take things out and they put things back ... and that’s how you make all your decisions in your life.” He often gives his lecture “Coming Out in Hollywood” on being openly gay in the workplace, at corporate programs based on his connection with his audience. Even with all his success, comedy isn’t Stuart’s passion. Acting is. CARNEY Somehow, director Clint Eastwood and gay screenwriter Dustin Lance Black have managed to turn the life of J. Edgar Hoover, one of the most fascinating and controversial figures in American history, into a leaden and heavy-handed movie. Despite some fine performances, this muddled biopic of the founder and longterm director of the FBI fails to bring Hoover and his inner circle to credible cinematic life. “J. Edgar” traces the personal and professional life of Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio) from his days as an ambitious young agent (the Palmer raids of 1919) to his death in 1972. Hoover is flanked by sidekick Clyde Tolson (Arnie Hammer), his longtime male companion and No. 2 man at the FBI, and his devoted secretary, Helen Gandy (Naomi Watts). Both Tolson and Gandy are carefully courted by Hoover and remain loyal to him despite 50 years of emotional abuse and manipulation and increasingly ruthless and bizarre behavior in office. In one of the strongest scenes (visually and dramatically), Hoover proposes to Gandy on their third date. He takes her to the Library of Congress where he has helped to develop a new card catalogue system. As he runs through the stack in search of the volume she has requested, he tells her of his vision for bringing new scientific methods (like fingerprinting and handwriting analysis) to the field of criminology. She is smitten by his charisma and his passion for justice, yet wary of his lack of concern for individual privacy. She rebuffs his awkward advance and rejects his sudden proposal of marriage, yet accepts his offer to become his personal secretary. He seems relieved. DiCaprio and Watts play the scene with great sensitivity and unexpected charm and Eastwood directs with a lively pace and visual style that is lacking from the rest of the movie. Gandy returns the favor by arranging the first private meeting between Hoover and Tolson. Hoover is reviewing applicants for his new Bureau, insisting that his agents conform to the highest standards of personal decorum and professional zeal. Although Tolson shows neither of those qualities, Hoover decides to interview him after Gandy mentions that the recruit shows “no particular interest in women.” Tolson is hired on the spot and soon accepts Hoover’s proposal to become his No. 2 man at the FBI. Tolson also becomes the No. 1 man in Hoover’s life. In Eastwood and Black’s telling of the story, their relationship remains emotionally intense yet physically chaste. At Tolson’s insistence, the two men eat lunch and dinner together every day (except when Hoover is capriciously punishing Tolson), yet they share only one kiss. This kiss comes after a bloody fight, sparked by Hoover’s confession that he has been seeing a Hollywood starlet. A frustrated Tolson lashes out at Hoover, pins him to the ground and kisses him. Hoover breaks away and makes it clear that their physical relationship will never go any further. They will hold hands and even share the occasional breakfast, but that’s the limit. Black’s writing in this fight scene draws on every Hollywood cliché in the book — the coded banter between the two men (they have some bitchy things to say about Lucy Ricardo), the glass smashed against the wall, Hoover’s anguished shouts of “don’t leave me!” to a retreating Tolson, and Hoover’s whispered declaration of love — after Tolson has left the room. DiCaprio and Hammer invest the scene with great conviction, but even Hollywood veteran Eastwood is unable to do much with this melodramatic and almost laughable mess. Living with diabetes C M Focus on diet, exercise and a positive attitude By KEVIN NORRIS & LEONID FROLOV November is National Diabetes Month and a good time to reflect on how diabetes impacts our lives and what can be done about it. My good friend Leonid Frolov has had first-hand experience with this disease and this week he is my guest columnist writing about his insights and experiences with diabetes. He wrote the following: I am sure most of us have noticed at least one person at a party who would stay away from anything sweet while everyone else is indulging in what ultimately appeals to one of our deadly sins. Well, it does not have to be sinful but it can certainly be deadly for some. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are 25.8 million people in the United States, or 8.3 percent of the population, who have diabetes. Diabetes can lead to glaucoma, cataracts, neuropathy, skin infections, a number of heart diseases, high blood pressure, depression and nerve damage to name a few. Most of us may know there is type-1 and type-2 diabetes. Type-1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type-1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin, which ultimately is the energy source necessary for our body. Type-2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or it “ignores” insulin and it is not transformed into energy. There is still no cure for diabetes. Even in the medical community there doesn’t seem to be a consensus about management and treatment of diabetes, especially type-1. A friend of mine who has been living with type-1 diabetes for Y CM MY CY CMY K many years admitted that one of the biggest problems for him has been lack of understanding of the disease in the medical community. He’s done some rigorous research himself, which allows him to recognize doctors who base their approach on treatment of diabetes from the most advanced research results. But a lot can be done to manage the disease and even to prevent the onset of type-2 diabetes. Self-management is the term to describe a healthy lifestyle, which includes exercising, watching one’s weight, proper diet, keeping a balance in one’s life and keeping stress under control. Each of us can make a choice — to succumb to the disease or to put a reign on it and continue living life to the fullest. Both are possible, and the choice is ours and ours only. “Full engagement with life” is something that we all want. Diabetes is no reason to disengage. Living with diabetes can be tough but with proper care it can be a footnote in your life’s story. My dad got hit hard by diabetes in his 70s. With his zest for life and family support he managed to live his life the way he wanted. He painted his last painting when his vision was almost gone and he had to use a magnifying glass to see the details on the canvas. But his love for his hobby was all he needed to create yet another memorable piece of art. Stay with those who ignite your energy and have a positive outlook on life. Stay on track with your daily commitments to yourself in your self-management. Diabetes touches our lives more often than we might be aware of. It happens in countless variety of forms. We can’t deny the importance of understanding diabetes and what it entails on the part of everyone. She’s touring with a drummer, bass player and keyboardist. Ndegeocello, known for her bass playing, may do some bass work but is “trying to concentrate more on singing” this time out. She says she and her combo will likely play “Weather” in its entirety, but aren’t aiming to reproduce it live. “See if you just want to hear that, then just go buy the record,” she says. “My goal is to get the best musicians and go out and have an open, live experience. I just have to have the audience opened to something new and us trying to bring something new to the music.” But is that wise, when audiences are only just absorbing the new album, if they’ve had a chance to hear it yet at all? There’s no musical snottiness or self-indulgence in her warm speaking voice when she explains, but the bottom line is, Ndegeocello doesn’t care nor does she apologize for her philosophies of concert giving. “I hope some of these will be people’s favorite songs, but really it’s more about trying to bring them in and give them a good audible experience. … I’m hoping they’ll like these songs even if they don’t know the music. That’s my goal.” Have more hits-oriented artists who often take audience requests and even encourage them, made it tough for more tradition-eschewing singers like Ndegeocello? And what does she do when fans yell out requests? “It’s sad to say, but I usually just have to ignore it,” she says. “I try to just stay in a clear mindset and just move on and play the set. That’s the thing I think people sometimes don’t realize. We rehearsed. We have the songs we’ve learned and planned to play. I’m not a jukebox. I just have to be extremely confident and move on.” Ndegeocello says that’s not a criticism of other artists who encourage fans to yell out requests. “I’m just not that kind of artist,” she says. “If I was, and had connected with so many people in the zeitgeist, yeah, that’s incredible. I just never thought of myself as that way … I love David Bowie, but even he didn’t want to be Ziggy Stardust his whole life. I don’t think [requests] are rude, I really wish I could make everyone happy, but it just hasn’t worked out for me that way. I’m just always trying to find new things, to stay fresh and stay creative. Anyone who’s followed me will know that I’m more forward thinking and rarely like to revisit the past.” Ndegeocello doesn’t mind a little looking back though, during our conversation. She remembers Washington fondly. She grew up more in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs — she still has family here — and cut her musical teeth on the local go-go scene and also by dancing in (Frame and lenses) gay nightclubs. *See office for details. But in these circumstances I try to make it a little more objective. I will ask an owner to make a list of eight or 10 things that make his pet special. It’s important to make the list before the pet is in genuinely failing. When the dog or cat can no longer do six of eight of the items on the list, or eight of the 10, when the pet is having more bad days than good, when the pet no longer wants to eat and it has been days since the last full meal, these are signs of suffering. Above all, pet owners want to avoid a situation where their pet’s last days are spent in discomfort. One part of my job is to advise owners so that, in retrospect and even years down the road, there are no regrets. The owners need to know if they are keeping a pet alive because they are incapable of saying goodbye. To end the life of a dear friend too soon would be tragic, but to prolong suffering in a friend because of selfishness would be even more so. And in the end, after a long life, good health and lifetime spent in a home with a family that loves them, where all their needs are met, when we have done all that we can for them, the last favor you can do for an old friend is to let him go in peace. And that is what unconditional love is all about. Radio jocks give us the Top 10 Popular Songs, Money Magazine gives us the Top 10 Best Places to Retire, financial experts give us the Top 10 Best Master Card or Visa rates and Johnny Carson was the master with a Top 10 for everything. But, hey, since this article is being published on 11-11-11, I thought I’d go the extra mile. This is the time of year when potential sellers start to ask me whether it’s a good idea to put their homes on the market now or wait until springtime (which in our local real estate world is actually late January or early February).
