Varian GC Capillary Column Program Varian offers the most complete capillary column selection available on the market today, and provides a wide variety of ultra-low bleed and general purpose columns as well as specialized Porous Layer Open Tubular capillary (PLOT) columns for gases and volatile compounds. Also available are Select columns, application specific columns for environmental, food and fragrance, chemical, and chiral analyses. You’ll find that there’s a Varian capillary column to meet your need, with a range of features suited to optimize your specific application. In addition, each Varian capillary column is supplied with EZ-GRIP, the unique system that makes installation, coupling, and operation of your capillary column easier. For a complete overview of Varian’s GC column program, phase composition and application area, see page 196. Varian’s Unique EZ-GRIP™ Supplied with Each Standard GC Capillary Column • Easier precolumn/retention gap and dual-column installation • Secure, error-free connections for optimum column performance • Saves installation time with complete, unified column system 1. Special tabs on EZ-GRIP secure up to 15 meters of precolumn and retention gap tubing. 2. Each EZ-GRIP includes two brackets to firmly attach single ferrule column connectors to a precolumn, transfer-line, or second analytical column. 3. EZ-GRIP firmly attaches a second analytical column on a 5-in. cage to create rugged and easy-to-handle dual column configurations. See page 194 for more information on Varian’s GC columns on 5-in. cage. 4. EZ-GRIP tabs conveniently hold the column inlet and outlet ends during storage and installation. Inlet and outlet ends are clearly marked on the EZ-GRIP bar, eliminating accidental reverse-direction reinstallation and the extra time needed to reinstall or bake out/back flush the column. 5. The unique column scale is in the ideal location to help you accurately and quickly measure the correct column length to insert into the injector and detector. Also, standard Varian 3800 GC insertion lengths are pre-marked to save you from time and eliminate errors. Ideal applications: aromatic compounds, pesticides and herbicides, sterols and other substituted aromatic compounds in trace environmental and analytical analysis. Varian Custom GC Columns Varian offers a wide range of stationary phases in several dimensions. Sometimes, however, you need to use a column that has nonstandard dimensions, tests, or other special criteria. Because Varian performs the entire production process in-house, we can address almost any requirement and supply almost any special column you request. For instance, some of the custom columns that Varian can deliver include: • Columns in a variety of lengths and film thicknesses • EZ-Guard columns • Columns with a retention gap or transfer line tested for leaks • Analytical columns coupled and tested for leaks • Columns custom tested with a specific test mixture and test conditions Don’t let a special requirement prevent you from following up a line of critical research. Please contact your local Varian sales office with any questions regarding custom-made columns and price quotations. NEW! Ideal applications: high dipole (electron rich) compounds like ketones, aldehydes, nitro-, chloro-, bromo-, fluorocontaining compounds, substituted aromatic compounds, unsaturated compounds, silanes and CFCs. NEW! 0.53 mm columns are ideally suited for specific injection techniques such as valve, on-column, and direct injection. High flow rates are possible, allowing fast analysis and low elution temperatures. 0.53 mm ID VF-1ms and VF-5ms columns Page 210 Page 212 Columns on a Varian 5-in. Cage Most GC columns are also available on a 5-in. cage. The 5-in. cage can be attached to Varian’s standard 7-in. cage with EZ-GRIP. This lets you easily and conveniently install together one 7-in. and one 5-in. column with EZ-GRIP, saving valuable oven space. The Varian 5-in. cage will also fit the HP6850 GCs. Varian capillary columns on 5-in. cages can be ordered via standard part numbers by adding the suffix “i5” to the end of the regular 7-in. part number. For example, the 5-in. version of CP8944 will be CP8944i5. The price of the column on a 5-in. cage is the same as the price for the same column on a standard 7-in. cage. Note: Our columns on 7-in. cages are delivered with EZ-GRIP, but our columns on the smaller 5-in. cages are not. NEW! EZ-Guard™ Columns Page 222 The Varian EZ-Guard column combines a FactorFour column with a built-in Varian guard column (retention gap). There’s no coupling so no leaks! The EZ-Guard columns also have a unique uncoated section at the column outlet, which acts as an integrated transferline. When used with any type of detector, a shorter stabilization time will be obtained. Optimal Separation The efficiency of a column. and the other is applied to all other available stationary phases. low bleed columns have a longer column life. Minimum Operating Temperature The minimum operating temperature is the lowest usable temperature where the stationary phase is liquid. Columns with higher plate numbers per meter have a high separation power. One is applied to FactorFour and other low bleed columns. we make sure the column-to-column reproducibility is as high as possible. For temperature-programmed analysis. The use of higher temperatures than indicated will lead to reduced column lifetime and possible changes in elution order because of partial thermal degradation. Low Bleed Provides Increased Sensitivity Column bleed is the formation of volatile products caused by the degradation of the stationary phase. Columns with a small variation in Beta will have a high column-to-column retention time reproducibility. Beta. the bleed level doubles with every 12 °C rise in temperature.com GC Columns . The definition for maximum programmable temperature differs only in the time span: a 50% reduction of phase in 200 hours. Varian columns are manufactured to ensure high column-to-column retention time reproducibility. This process guarantees that all Varian GC columns are manufactured using a systematic and controlled process. Inert columns deliver far more reliable results. The Maximum Allowable Operating Temperature of a stationary phase. Usually this results in a maximum programmable temperature of 20 to 25°C higher than the maximum isothermal temperature. and therefore the more accurately the peak can be quantified. and depends on the phase film thickness. which means detectors require less maintenance with Varian columns. Background in any GC-MS system is the sum of contributions that begin with the carrier gas. any degradation product will appear to be similar to a stationary phase bleed product. and sample introduction is done with a syringe via a septum.GC System Background Sources 207 GC System Background System Background and Noise Generation How to identify and reduce the sources of rising baselines in GC analysis When a high background is observed. which is placed as close as possible to the GC carrier gas inlet. 20°C/min). the GC column is often targeted as the cause. Solvent contact with the cap should therefore be minimized. when a sample is stored in a vial and analyzed after 4-8 weeks. Since the septum is made of 100% polydimethylsiloxane (the same material that is used to manufacture stationary phases). Extension of gas lines in the laboratory must be done with clean tubing. The vial is often sealed with a cap on a rubber/silicon seal. the background is frequently generated by a different source. the entire GC system needs to be optimized and background (noise) must be minimized. By using filters placed as close as possible to the GC carrier gas inlet. Unfortunately. Injector Liners Glass wool liners are excellent for increasing evaporation and ensuring reproducible injections. Minimizing system background provides several advantages: • • • • Lower detection limits and more accurate data Reduced contamination of the detection system Better spectra in mass spectroscopy Faster start-up times Injector and Septum The majority of injection systems are based on split/splitless injection. However. Our Gas Clean filters are ideal for this purpose. The Sample Often. The purest carrier gas can be used. but can cause ghost peaks and bleed by trapping of septa particles and bleed products. the background and ghost peaks that are assumed to be background are a result of contamination from the sample. an extreme rise in the bleed profile is clearly visible due to moisture in the carrier gas. ending with the detector. a gas line is opened. Because many moisturizers contain siloxane. septum.208 GC System Background Sources Contamination from the Outside Columns can be easily contaminated during installation by transfer of skin oils or hand creams. This can happen via leaks and is introduced via the gas supply. This is particularly important when using MS detection. the column exterior can become contaminated. A large volume of air (containing moisture and oxygen) can pass through the hot transfer line. and shifting of retention times. Did you know that EZ-Guard columns include an integrated retention gap for leak-free operation? The Stationary Phase Each stationary phase will start to decompose when heated at elevated temperatures. and connections. Introduction of air in the GC system via “air exposure” Transfer lines in MS are potential sources of background contamination. which can locate leaks at difficult spots such as the septum. For reducing column bleed without the risk of damage from oxygen in the carrier gas. longer conditioning times at lower temperatures may be more effective. The absolute bleed level depends on the nature of the stationary phase. Cleaning the end of the fused silica with tissue and methanol before it is inserted in the transfer line is always recommended. Leak detection is thus important and is recommended to be done before conditioning the column by handheld leak detectors. leading to lower background. The stationary phase stabilization technology and the optimization of the fused silica surface all contribute to the low bleed specifications of Varian’s FactorFour columns. coupling. since there is no gas flow along the outside of the fused silica when installed as a transfer line in an MS system. The subsequent analysis can exhibit higher background and less peak abundance due to adsorption. This also shortens stabilization times with the detection system. When performing column or injector maintenance. The contaminants can drift toward the ionization chamber.
