Higher education institutions play an imperative role in nurturing talents and developing quality human capital to ensure that we are set in our path of becoming a developed country by 2020. Our graduates are our future. They are the ones who will be one of the major strengths behind Malaysia’s economic transformation – quality human capital. In order to persistently stimulate the nation’s growth and development, academia and industry leaders must work hand-in-hand to ensure our graduates are well equipped with cutting-edge skills and fundamental knowledge that will allow them to make immediate contributions when they join the workforce. I commend UCSI University for establishing its very own Co-Operative Education Placement Programme (Co-Op). The partnership between academia and industry has created opportunities for these students to learn in an environment where they will be exposed to real-life working experiences. This, without a doubt, will enhance these graduates’ employability and at the same time strengthen the strategic relations between industry leaders and academia, which are strongly advocated in the National Higher Education Strategic Plan (PSPTN). I understand that this year is the 10th year anniversary of the existence of UCSI University’s Co-Op programme. Based on the report that was generated; I saw that 99% of the employers registered under this programme were very pleased with the students’ performance during their Co-Op placement at their respective companies. This further demonstrates the effectiveness of industrial placement as an avenue for students to cultivate the required skills to prepare them for the real world. For that, I would like to express my heartiest congratulations to UCSI University for its commitment and determination in empowering our talents for the benefit of our nation. 02 UCSI UNIVERSITY CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION REPORT 2013 FOREWORD Message by The UCSI Group Chairman and Founder Dato’ (Dr) Peter Ng As the Co-operative Education Placement Programme (Co-Op) enters its 10th year, we reflect on a decade of excellence – one that placed thousands of UCSI University students at the world’s leading companies. Co-Op was designed to equip students with invaluable industry exposure while they are still studying. I’m happy to note that it has surpassed expectations on every count. And if UCSI’s greatest strength is its great relationship with the industry, Co-Op made it all possible. The results speak for themselves. A recent tracer study conducted by the Malaysian Ministry of Education and Higher Learning rates UCSI as one of the top two Malaysian universities in the area of graduate employability. With a score of 81.4%, UCSI is ranked above all the leading private universities and foreign branch campuses in Malaysia. And while open distance learning universities and a niche medical school were ranked higher, their scores are contingent to a number of factors. Working adults make up the bulk of an open university’s student population, contributing to the near perfect scores, while doctors are never unemployed. This study – which focused on effective work placement of university students within six months of graduation – and other milestones of years past reflect the transformational element of Co-Op, not only for UCSI but for the Malaysian higher education landscape. When Co-Op was first launched, it was the only programme of its kind in Asia that required students to undergo at least two months of internship each year. This was unheard of at the time and even policy makers were sceptical. However, the results and the job-readiness of UCSI graduates changed opinions and the rest is history. Others took notice of Co-Op’s success and today, every serious university in Malaysia has a work placement component in place. The magnitude of change is best reflected by the numbers. Co-Op started with 30 students and 21 participating companies that required some convincing. Today, UCSI has placed more than 16,000 students at 1,806 companies globally. Overseas internships are also becoming more prevalent. UCSI students have enjoyed stints at renowned establishments in Japan, Hong Kong, China and Singapore, among others, and the University constantly seeks to expand its global network to provide students with avenues to shine. With more developments in the pipeline, Co-Op stands out for its game-changing role in addressing the industry’s human capital needs. In retrospect, the objective of Co-Op was to equip UCSI students with the skills and confidence to chart a promising career trajectory. It achieved a snowball effect we can truly be proud of. And while Co-Op has certainly made an impact, we are under no illusions that its journey has only just begun. Here’s to the next 10 years. Watch this space. UCSI UNIVERSITY CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION REPORT 2013 03 FOREWORD Message by The UCSI University Council Chairman Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Musa Mohamad Assalamualaikum Warohmatullahi Wabarokatuh. In the past years, we have seen Malaysia’s plans and efforts gain momentum to achieve one mission; to transform the country into a high-income nation by 2020. Following this mission, the role of higher education institutions today has also expanded, evolved and gained even more prominence in nation-building. Our responsibility now is not only limited to providing students with knowledge, but also to drive Malaysia’s human capital development. Ultimately, the aim is to groom highly qualified graduates who are globally competitive and able to be a catalyst for the growth of the nation’s economy. In this, it is imperative that the future generation be not only book-smart – but also able to hit the ground running upon entering the workforce. UCSI University’s Co-Operative Education Placement Programme (Co-Op) plays a pivotal role by providing students with work opportunity and exposure to the working environment. Through this programme, students are given a chance to familiarise themselves with the intricacies of the industry, while at the same time build their confidence with the skills gained from working under the wings of industry experts. This goes far in preparing them to perform and excel in their role to not only meet the expectations of the nation but to exceed it. It is important to note that this track record of excellence has been an integral part of a UCSI University student’s education experience for the last decade. This year, during its 10th year anniversary the Co-Op programme has placed 3,692 students at over 1,806 companies worldwide. I am very pleased with the ever-growing number of our Co-Op partners who have given tireless support to the University, simultaneously strengthening the relationship between the graduates and the industry. As a Praxis University®, closing the gap between industry and academia has always been our mission and I would like to thank all our Co-Op partners for their support. The Co-Op programme’s decade of excellence would not have been possible without the backing of these industry leaders. I would like to congratulate each and every student who has completed his/her Co-Op programme. I hope through this programme, students will continue to gain valuable insights to kick-start their journeys as working professionals and to maintain their dedication towards achieving excellence in their chosen fields. Thank you and Wassalamu’alaikum. 04 UCSI UNIVERSITY CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION REPORT 2013 UCSI UNIVERSITY CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION REPORT 2013 05 . . Today. This marks a stark contrast to the original 21 companies in 2004 and UCSI records an average increase of 10% in the number of Co-Op partners each year. The Malaysian higher education landscape underwent a seismic shift in the right direction and Co-Op was its watershed. Partnering with the right organisations was vital and University staff frequently visited companies in the early days to assess whether they would be a good fit. Additionally. A separation between academia and work existed at the time and the powers-that-be were a tad skeptical with the idea of regular student internships. At UCSI University. This led to the launch of UCSI’s Co-Operative Placement programme . that reason to believe is anchored on a 28-year record of industrial excellence that is second to none. more than 1. things were not exactly rosy in the early days.
