It's a good idea to jot down notes or drawings. Prepping the Block With the old heads removed. Wipe the surface with brake cleaner. Remove all traces of gasket and any oil or grease that may be present. If everything looks O K. but be advised that this will void the warranty since it is a modification of the head. C hecking Header Clearance Place one of your new heads on a suitable work top and install a couple of the recommended spark plugs. A good hex end plug socket is a must. C ylinder Head Removal Consult your shop manual for the proper removal procedure for your particular vehicle. Once the block decks have been cleaned and checked. follow the instructions below: A . Be sure to check both headers. If you can get the feeler gauge under. After cleaning the head bolt hole threads. This is very important for sealing the new head bolts and torquing the heads down evenly on the block! You may want to put an "X" on the bolt pattern diagram ( Figure 1 ) by the holes that you've already done so you don't lose track.004 in.d. 3. Repeat the procedure for the other valve. and the exhaust should have . torqued to 30 ft. and set the adjustable pushrod to the proper length for your combination. place all head bolt washers on the head to protect the aluminum surface. or more of clearance. rotate the crank until the #1 piston is at TD C on the exhaust stroke. then remove the head and gently remove the clay. while others may have " F R O NT. following the sequence in Figure 1 : . Installing the Trick Flow Heads With the block clean and all checks completed. and leave it there. guideplate. Place the head gasket you will be using on the block and bolt the head on with five or six head bolts. C arefully measure the clay with a machinist's scale or calipers. Rotate the crank until you're on the compression stroke of the #1 cylinder. Coat the top of the piston with a very thin layer of oil. or more of clearance. you do not have to check piston-to-valve clearance. It is still a good idea to familiariz e yourself with the procedure since you may want to go to a larger cam in the future. E." When the gasket is positioned correctly. C. C arefully cut the clay in slices and look for the thinnest section of the valve impression. Torque the bolts in the three stages below.) B.-lbs. Exhaust Leak Note: What sounds like a lifter tick is often an exhaust gas leak. 12. The best setting will depend on your particular engine combination and ambient conditions.
