Bawal ding magsuot ng pulang damit, o magbitbit ng anumang bagay na pula o hugis puso tulad ng lobo o greeting card. “We are anticipating an active patrolling starting tomorrow by the Saudi morals police who search for forbidden items most especially in the Saudi capital Riyadh,” ani Monterona, na nakabakasyon ngayon sa Maynila. Para sa mga OFW na nangungulila sa mga iniwang mahal sa buhay sa Araw ng mga Puso, minungkahi ni Monterona na tawagan ang mga ito o padalhan ng maikling e-mail. “You can go to an Internet café and chat with your wife and kids, but be careful not to even give virtual flying kisses as it is associated to Valentine’s. Because if marriage is an institution, then being single means being part of a fraternity. 3 Valentine for singles Remember there is strength and comfort in numbers By Wanggo Gallaga EARING black on Valentine’s Day to show protest against a day meant only for those lucky in relationships, is so passé. But going to a singles bar is just a little desperate. However, if you couldn’t hit it off with someone before Valentine’s, then the singles bar, with its communal feeling of misery, might be the best place for you. It may also be a good place for a nookie. But honestly, that would just give you problems—such as trying to remember the person’s name the next day, and having to remember why you met in the first place. There’s nothing wrong with being single on Valentine’s Day. I say this with no bitterness. I am, after all, a pro in this, having spent 28 of my 29 years dateless on VDay. Dateless, you can always go for the best explanation—“I’m picky and choosy. I don’t settle and I just haven’t found the right person yet.” Let’s just hope it’s true and you’re no W loser. And don’t sound bitter when you say it. Say it with a little frustration—that sounds more genuine. The point is not to stress out and don’t let it get to you. There’s a whole lot of fun to be had on the day meant for couples as long as you remember that when two become one, the more the “many-er!” There are 365 days in a year. So you missed out on one that had all the best promos for eating for two, but who cares, really? Once you find that person, it will be magic, but while you haven’t, it’s best to avoid the horrors of Valentine’s: all the good restaurants are fully booked; movie theaters running romantic flicks are filled with lovers; flowers and chocolates are very expensive—and traffic is horrible. Finding parking is even more horrible. So gather all your single friends and take advantage of the wretched Sunday by Valentine singles party ideas Hole up at home. Since V-Day is a Sunday, make it a long weekend in someone’s house. Get there Friday night and leave Sunday afternoon. Do movie marathons or play Rock Band. Just stay out of the way of pesky couples and their demented idea of rubbing it into your face that you’ve no date. Best choice for a movie marathon—a horror/slasher film. Stay away from romantic comedies! Go out of town. Leave Friday night and come back on Sunday. February is usually cold so it’s best to put up a bonfire on the beach. The pictures are going to be so gorgeous their going to make your couple-friends green with envy. Too bad they were never invited. Do karaoke. Take the barkada to your friendly neighborhood karaoke place. Sing mushy love songs or your favorite breakup ballads. Make that your way of pointing the dirty finger to all the two-less-lonely-people-in-the-world. Humidity: (Day)67% Have a budget-friendly Valentine By Bianca Consunji Z ERO. If you’re a student or are just starting out, chances are you’re broke. You don’t have to spend a lot to make your date happy. Be creative. Some ideas might be corny, but so what? Valentine’s day is all about being corny. mind that schools have curfews, so start early. 5. Take photos. If you have a DSLR or can borrow one, head somewhere picturesque where you and your date can take lots of photos. If you know how to use a manual camera and he/she doesn’t, you’ll get plus points for teaching your date. (And you’ll have plenty of photos of him/her afterwards). 1. Bake something at home. Ask your parents if you and your date can mooch off the kitchen for a day and whip up brownies or cookies together. If both of you aren’t exactly kitchen gurus, it’s okay—the fun is in trying out something new. 2. Bring out the board games. Play Scrabble or Monopoly. You’ll find yourselves bonding over the silliest inside jokes. 3. Check out exhibits. Some galleries and museums have free exhibits; make a day of it and hang out in the company of art and history. (Your date will think you’re cultured—a big plus!) 4. Picnic under the stars. Hang out in an open field like the Sunken Garden or the Bellarmine field and bring sandwiches and coffee. Go stargazing and just talk quietly. Keep in not talking about Big Dome concerts; small bands in venues such as Eastwood are easy to find and can set the atmosphere for a little dancing. You can also go to a comedy bar if you’re into that, but be prepared for some really bad Valentine’s day jokes. 2. Watch a play. Instead of a movie, head to a play. Companies like Repertory Philippines are sure to have interesting plays, so check out the schedules and gear yourself up for a night of culture. P5,000 crowded on Valentine’s day) and watch a bunch of DVDs and order some food. To avoid being trite, go for a theme movie night (“Disney cartoon night,” “art film festival,” or “corny Filipino movies”) and order something other than pizza. 3. Hang out in school. Do this only if you aren’t a student, and if you and your date studied in the same university. You’ll have a blast remembering your heyday in school, and you can swap stories about the crazy things you did as an undergrad. Have fishballs or cafeteria food just for old times. 4. Some couples like being really corny—like going to a ceramic painting shop to paint a vase or two together. You don’t have to take it seriously—better, in fact, if you’re both just playing around with paint. Come up with goofy designs; you’ll be sure to have a lot of inside jokes at the end of day. Hey there, big spender. P5,000 is a lot for one day, but if you really want to make the day special, you can go all out on flowers, a movie and a fancy dinner. But again, we recommend going off the beaten track—traffic will be really bad. 1. Take a road trip. Since Valentine’s day falls on a Sunday, you can take a road trip to a favorite nearby destination. Have lunch at Sonya’s Garden, spend the day at Tagaytay Highlands, head to a beach in Nasugbu—choose your destination. A change of scenery will do both of you good. P500 It’s not much nowadays, but a lot can still be done with your P500. You’ll be surprised by what you can still do. 1. Go ice skating. It’s a fun, goofy way to get to know each other if you aren’t a couple yet, and a great way to break the monotony if you’ve already been dating for quite some time. Some ice rinks give out coupons for free skating time, so watch out for flyers. 2. Skip the movie (it’ll be too P1,000 For P1,000, you can already have a decent meal in a midrange restaurant. However, save room for other activities so you don’t blow your budget on food. 1. Watch a live band. We’re RP rep in Norway for Worldwide Mr Gay tilt By Armin Adina DAVID Bosley lost 20 lbs. while preparing for the Worldwide Mr. Gay pageant to be held in Oslo, Norway, on Feb. 13. The 37-year-old visual merchandiser said he underwent a rigorous fitness regimen after his coronation last October as the Philippines’ official representative to the third edition of the global pageant. David flaunted his slimmer figure to mediamen who attended his sendoff party held last Feb. 3 at Dad’s in SM Megamall. There, he said he spent three months in the gym to make him more competitive against the 30 other international delegates expected to participate in the global competition. But his three-month preparation did not only consist of gym training and dieting. “I was also trained by Rodgil [Flores] on all aspects of the competition —walking down the ramp, projecting in front of the camera and handling questions,” David told INQUIRER LIBRE. David seeks to become the first Filipino winner in the competition that looks for a global ambassador for gay issues. The pageant’s founder, Eric Butter, personally witnessed David’s victory in the national pageant, and the Filipino representative sees it as a positive sign. Another favorable factor that David sees is the Philippines’ hosting of the global pageant next year. Winstruck Events, the national producer, revealed that the international organization chose the country as the venue for the global pageant in 2011. In a statement provided by Winstruck, Eric said “the decision for it to be held in Sunny Manila is unanimous after having it in winter countries like Canada and Norway.” If the pageant pushes through, the Philippines will become the first Asian country to host the prestigious competition for gay men. David left for Oslo on Feb. 9, together with an entourage composed of Winstruck officials. They flew together with Bb. Pilipinas 2005 Carlene Aguilar, a Miss World semifinalist, who will sit as one of the judges. While David is in Norway, Philippine-based fans may still express their support in the online poll.
