What became suspect from the analysis of the mixture was that the clandestine laboratory operators had attempted to carry out the synthesis of both phenyl2-propanone and amphetamine in the same reaction. The results were that an impurity, alpha-phenylacetamide, usually found in small amounts was now the major product of the reaction.
