Current Crime rate and trends in CALABARZON V ± Assessment, Conclusion and Recommendation VI ± Appendix VII ± References xxvii xxx xxxvi ii I ± Introduction People are bound by many expectations when it comes to visiting different locations. They consider a lot of things before going to a place and one of their primary concerns aside from the aesthetic value of the destination itself is its safety and security. There are several government agencies that ensure the safety of tourists and see to it that they have an enjoyable and well-deserved stay in the place. But at times, no matter how much we increase the security, how talented the police are, or how all the other relevant factors work out, crime still happens on a daily basis not only here in our country but abroad as well. Problems like these would continue to arise despite the movements and laws that are set by the government. This is the reason why individuals must not only look at the big picture but also on the small details as well in order to figure out how crime affects the tourism in the country. This would mean considering each of the factors involved like the rate of crime in each city or the number of tourist arrivals per year. Information and data are different by nature and asserting to only one kind of those would only result in insufficient study or research. Tourism is a fast growing industry and a valuable sector, contributing significantly to the Philippine economy. Tourism affects the economy and lives of communities and has proven to be a lifesaver for many destinations. Tourism provides opportunities for regional development particularly for regional areas undergoing structural change. Being a labour intensive industry, with the right encouragement tourism can deliver great employment and training opportunities particularly for young people. CALABARZON is one of the regions of the Philippines. It is also designated as Region IV-A and its regional capital is Calamba City in Laguna. The region is composed of five provinces, namely: CAvite, LAguna, BAtangas, Rizal, and QueZON; the region's name is formed from the names of these provinces. The region is located in southwestern Luzon, just south and east of Metro Manila and is the second most densely populated region. iii and Patriotic. formulating a mathematical model and exploring a possible solution to the identified concern. The group gathered data which intends to prove that influences the demand of tourist arrivals in a certain place. the group includes in its objective to have a final project that will serve as a guide for the future tourists of CALABARZON. The specific goal of this study was to preliminarily examine the relationship between visitors (tourists) over time and the patterns and trends in crime rates for CALABARZON provinces (primarily the province of Laguna and Batangas) which were engaged in mass tourism. focused on the province of Batangas which will serve as its sampled population.Using the data gathered this report presents the prevailing peace and order situation in CALABARZON region. Batangas Police Provincial office with the help of PSSupt Francisco Don C. The Department of Tourism with the cooperation of Ms.to come up with an assessment of tourist arrival and the crime rate. Montenegro provided the necessary data for the study of peace and order situation of the province. (see appendix 1 for the inquiry letter) Due to some unforeseen circumstances. The impetus for the research was the earlier assessment of the patterns of tourist arrival and the trends crime in the region. Jurilla. supplied the data on the total number of tourist arrivals in the region from 2002 through 2009. data available from the Department of Tourism Region IV-A regarding the annual tourist arrival were shortened since provinces like Rizal who failed to constantly monitor their annual tourist arrivals. In order to have an accurate data. In regards to the crime rate. whereas.III ± Methodology This research assesses the present tourist arrival and the crime rate of Region IV-A. Data gathering had been a crucial part for the group . Louella C. the group directly went to government offices concerned such as the Philippine National Police and Department of Tourism to secure primary data which is used in the assessment. supplied data related to official crime statistics in Region IV-A for the years 2009 through 2010. The Philippine National Police (PNP) Regional Office with the cooperation with the Regional Management Coordinating Committee (RMCC). the data supplied by the Regional Police Office were merely dated from 2009 through 2010 since data were still unavailable and mostly were confidential. Provinces like Cavite and Quezon made the data available for briefer periods of time or partial data was provided so the analysis is limited to those two jurisdictions (Laguna and Batangas) for which the most data are available for the full eight years. v . Regional Director of Department of Tourism Region IV-A. Quantitative experiments also filter out external factors. Creswell (1994) stated that the descriptive method of research is to gather information about the present existing condition. Quantitative methods can be used to verify which of such hypotheses are true. not just what. this method allows a flexible approach. and so the results gained can be seen as real and unbiased. where. further investigation may be conducted. Available data allow the basic macro-analysis of the relationship of annual visitors to the crime rates. and the results can be legitimately discussed and published. After statistical analysis of the results. which was not the case. On the other hand. rather than large samples. Quantitative research design was used for an excellent way of finalizing results and proving or disproving the hypothesis. the group also used the Qualitative method to investigate the why and how of decision making. thus. Research Design Both Quantitative and Qualitative methods were used in this research to clearly present the relationship of crime rate and tourist arrival. it is noted that this analysis could have been more comprehensive since location-specific information had been available. when important new issues and questions arise during the duration of the study. Moreover. The descriptive method of research was used to present the annual condition of tourist arrival and crime rate in the region. this analysis is a preliminary assessment of the issue of tourism and crime. uses a smaller but focused samples. with the help of determination the data available was been used and the province of Batangas as its sampled population. In this regard. Hence. This produce information only on the particular case studied.Nevertheless. a comprehensive answer is reached. To define the descriptive type of research. Moreover. when. and any more general conclusions are only hypotheses (informative guesses). The aim of using the descriptive method is to verify formulated hypotheses that refer to the present situation in order to elucidate it. vi . The group used inferential statistics to analyze the relationship between the crime statistics and try to infer from the sample data Batangas Province which serves as the sample population for the CALABARZON region. 857 120.000 400.531 241.762 NOTE: .326 96.020 85. The importance of tourism to many countries and many communities is incontrovertible. Clearly. Moreover. meaning a healthy community and economy positively contributes to the tourist arrival that will be beneficial to the citizens. the criminal justice system must understand the relationships between phenomena such as crime and visitors so that preventive measures may be considered as well as systemic responses to increases or decreases in tourism. the group concluded that the region is a safe place for tourists.26% and 51. By studying these things. the researcher therefore conclude that there is a relationship between the crime rate and number of tourist arrivals here in the CALABARZON area which is applicable to any tourist destination within or outside the country. The next study to be conducted under the same topic should not only be conducted among the cities here in Region IV-A. The study suggested that the students as well as the community learn more about the relationship between the crime rate and tourist arrivals here in the Philippines. Some people are content in doing their everyday things not knowing about how the increase in crime rate could decrease the number of tourist arrival in the country which in turn leads to the decrease of income of some businesses. but also on other region in the Philippines with high influx of tourists. It will also seem effective if there would be comparisons between the past years to the present as well as the future probability. the following recommendations are hereby made: 1. RECOMMENDATION After a thorough analysis of data. most people do not know much about that certain issue which affects not only our country but ourselves as well. and account for factors that influence the tourism of the country. through careful analysis and interpretation of the graphs and tables of this study and by using some formulas. explain to others.in measurement and prevention efforts which would serve visitors as well as residents. All in all. This study can therefore help others to consider and incorporate a strategy that would be beneficial not only to those with businesses but for those who are pursuing a career in the tourism department. other regions ± among others be considered to be included in future studies. Review of other topics related to the study is also suggested to see a wider scope for the topic presented. this study may serve as a guide on how they can adjust themselves whenever there is a crime happening here in our country so that their own businesses would still be going on. A comparison of the crime rate and tourist arrival should provide clear and straight-to-the-point analysis. xxix . Aside from the two recommendations above.3. Because being aware of such issues can help one create the proper steps and measures in order to provide a proper solution.
