The use of two 24V batteries allows lower AH batteries to be incorporated with higher efficiency and wattage. 1 Tip of a flat belly : 12V batteries can be also tried however the power output would be reduced to half. New York Solar Savings Since a dual supply is used the connected transformer does not need to be a center tapped type, rather a two wire ordinary transformer becomes suitable here. The couple of designs shown below are all that would be required for implementing this simple pure sine wave inverter circuit. The first circuit is the basic sine wave generator which becomes the feeding input to the main sine wave amplifier or the output stage. The sine wave generator produces a pure sine wave output with the shown components at about 50Hz, for other frequencies the 2.5K resistor may be altered, and tested in a simulator for fixing the desired results. The sine generator circuit should be supplied with +/-12V, and not directly from the 24V battery supply as that might damage the IC permanently. The opamps used in this sine generator are from the IC TL072 The next diagram shows the output stage of the proposed simple pure sine wave inverter circuit. As can be seen the design is not at all complicated. All the involved components are standard, and easily available. The mosfets are IRF540n and IRF9540n which compliment each other to produce the required push pull effect over the attached transformer. With a 0-24V/25amp transformer, and a couple of 24V batteries the circuit would be able to generate as high as 600 watts of pure sine wave output at the relevant voltage. The output across the right hand side opamp of the sine generator is to be connected across the input of the second circuit for initializing the proposed operations. If I use salvaged power transformer (heavy iron core type, 50hz) from an APC UPS 650, how it can be used in 12V+0+12V circuits since its windings are 8 to 9 volts each instead of 12V. However I have two more question: 1. if salvaged transformer winding is 8-9 volt then 12-14 volt from a juicy battery is going to damage the winding by overheating it since it was wound for a lower voltage. 2. Moreover if salvaged transformer is from a sine wave UPS then a modified square wave or square wave inverter may slowly damage it due to extra transients since it was made for a sine wave and not for square wave. I think square wave transformers are made with extra winding (head room for transients) but am not sure what do you say? It would get damaged only under conditions where it gets very hot, otherwise I don't think you can damage an iron-cored transformer through any other means. 9V is just under 12V so it would make the transformer slightly warm, not much, moreover it's the wattage consumption at the output that may be responsible for heating up the transformer, if it's controlled appropriately, things would be all right. You may incorporate my circuits which have a 555 pwm controller attached, this would give you an option of controlling the RMS so that the transformer is not operated under incorrect voltage parameters. I've seen inverters that do not rely on the transformer to make the output, instead, they first transform low DCV to high DCV (H-bridge)using FETS and small HF transformers, and then modulate for pure sine AC through another H-Bridge i think. Is it possible that you can give us such a design, cause it seems one can get outputs over 2000W using small transformers. Use the output from the green line, extreme right side. for knowing the trafo amp apply 220V at its relevant winding, connect an AC ammeter set at max current range on other side of the trafo for a few seconds until you get the required current reading. Reply Replies Swagatam Majumdar January 7, 2014 at 1:03 PM Hi Prasad, Single battery will not work because the above design uses a single winding push-pull configuration. 12-0-12v will work, keep the center taps shorted and unused and use 2nos 24v batts. The above design is not a center tap type inverter so center tap cannot be used here.
