Description

Harry Potter, The Robot Wizard: An Introduction to GeometryAshtyn Powell and Sarah Joseph, University of Georgia Introduction Harry Potter, The Robot Wizard: An Introduction to Geometry focuses on incorporating reading, mathematics, robotics, and descriptive writing into one lesson. This lesson is built around 4 grade standards. Our lesson focuses on identifying and classifying 2 dimensional shapes, manipulating a robot and completing basic programming, reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone as a class book, and student reflection on the lesson. Materials •  Robo Robo Robot- Axe Bot (8) 3 •  Rogic Program •  Remote Control (8) •  Geometry Lines PowerPoint •  Elixir of Life- Help Harry Through the Forbidden Forest Worksheet (24) • Introduce geometry to the students through the Geometry Lines PowerPoint. This should take around 30-45 minutes. •  College Ruled Journals (24) Day 2: •  Begin class with a brief review of content from Day 1 •  Break students into groups of 3 and give them a robot, remote control, and have them work on the worksheet with their group. Once they complete the worksheet, groups may use Harry Potter, the Robot Wizard to trace their two-dimensional shapes from the worksheets. They will have to program the remote control using the Rogic programming system. 4th Grade Georgia Standards •  ELAGSE4RL2: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text. •  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone should be finished by the beginning of the lesson •  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s StoneJ.K. Rowling (1) Objectives •  MGSE4.G.1: Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures. This standard asks students to draw two-dimensional geometric objects and to also identify them in twodimensional figures. Examples of points, line segments, lines, angles, parallelism, and perpendicularity can be seen daily. Day 1: • Pass out the Elixir of Life- Help Harry Through the Forbidden Forest worksheet to use for class the next day By the completion of this lesson, our goal is to have students gain a basic understanding of geometry, an introduction to robotics, and a desire for reading. •  MGSE4.G.2: Classify 2 dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles. Lesson Layout Day 3: Harry Potter, the Robot Wizard •  Begin class by having students write a reflection in their journals about the previous day’s activity. •  Have students include how they felt about the new math concepts, the introduction to robotics and computer programming, did they enjoy the story, and if incorporating robotics was helpful in understanding the concepts •  Hopefully students will enjoy this activity and will gain interest in mathematics and robotics by combining it with reading and writing. The Robo Robo Axe Bot Take aways •  Students meet components of the 4th grade mathematics, reading, and writing standards •  Students are introduced to STEM activities through the use of robotics and computer programming •  Students gain interest in reading that hopefully continues throughout their lives •  Students reflect on their experience through descriptive writing •  Students become familiar with manipulating robots in the classroom setting References "Georgia Standards of Excellence Grade Level Overview."
