Law Faculty Research and Publications Report: 2010Message from the Dean It is with great pleasure that I have compiled a record of the research output of the Faculty of Law of the University of the Western Cape for the 2010 calendar year. The Faculty output is, as always, bolstered by the significant research outputs of staff at the Community Law Centre, and other Centres, Institutes and Projects allied to the Faculty. Our postgraduate students, post doctoral fellows and extraordinary professors have again made substantial efforts to augment the Faculty profile. This third annual Law Faculty research report includes several new categories: substantial research contributions (not mentioned as accredited articles or chapters), conference papers presented (again where these are not already counted for in other categories), and contributions to online publications. This has been done in the hope that a fuller profile of the research endeavours of our staff as a whole will emerge. Publications which have been produced in 2010 but for which publication is awaited are included in this publication. Thus a complete reflection of research endeavours is presented. The Faculty has shown strong research growth in the last five years. Our postgraduate programmes continue to produce many strong graduates and our growing doctoral programme, focused on African students, is attracting international interest. Of course, there is always room for improvement: the outputs recorded here were produced by only 50% of full time academic staff members. A contribution in 2011 by some of those who have not published in 2010 will lead to measurable improvements in the next report! However, let this not cloud the achievements of which this publication provides ample evidence.
