Rama Rahasya Upanishad[This great Upanishad is in Atharvana Veda and is the authoritative source of Lord Rama's worship methods.] Om ! O Devas, may we hear with our ears what is auspicious; May we see with our eyes what is auspicious, O ye worthy of worship ! May we enjoy the term of life allotted by the Devas, Praising them with our body and limbs steady ! May the glorious Indra bless us ! May the all-knowing Sun bless us ! May Garuda, the thunderbolt for evil, bless us ! May Brihaspati grant us well-being ! Om ! Let there be Peace in me ! Let there be Peace in my environment ! Let there be Peace in the forces that act on me ! I salute that Lord Rama, who is the personification of salvation, who is a great king, who is a great man and who destroys all his enemies. First Chapter 1-2. Great sages like Mudgala, Sandilya, Paingala, Bikshu, Sanaka and Prahlada approached Lord Hanuman, who was a great devotee of Vishnu and asked him, 3-4. “Which is the greatest principle among the four Veda-s, 18 purana-s, 18 Smritis, Sastra-s, all knowledge and among the great powers ruled by the Sun and moon?” 5-6. He replied, “Hey, great sages and devotees of Lord Vishnu! Please hear my words which cut of all attachments, the greatest principle among these is the principle of Brahma Taraka (OM). Rama is Para-Brahma and supreme austerity, and Rama is the Supreme Essence and Brahma Taraka.” 7. They all again asked, Lord Hanuman,”Please tell us the angas (aspects) of Lord Rama.” Lord Hanuman told, “Please understand that Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Durga, all the Kshetra Palaka-s, Sun, Moon, Lord Narayana, Lord Narasimha, Lord Vasudeva, Lord Varaha, Lord Lakshmana, Shatrughna, Bharata, Vibheeshana, Sugreeva, Angada, Jambavanta and Pranava are the angas of Lord he would get the same effect. Second Chapter The great sages led by Sanaka asked Hanuman again.” Here ends the First Chapter. “Please tell us the mantra for meditating (or worshipping) the Taraka Brahma Rama. if one repeats my six lettered mantra ten million times. killing of mother. “The japa of my name “Rama” removes all sins. Vibheeshana again asked him. Those who chant silently the mantra of Rama would get the same effect as repeating the letter “Om”. or read the prayer to Sita or daily pray to me by reciting my name.?” Rama replied “they can either read my Gita. “All People (even if they are not eligible to chant “Om”. On another occasion answering Vibheeshana’s question “How can your angas be made easy to worship? The king of mantras with two syllables (Rama) would lead to fulfillment of all desires. 7. The two four lettered mantras are Ramachandra and Ramabhadra. Aim and Ram. 2. Hrim. who is like Narayana residing in the nadi-s. and along with the suffix of one letter. Srim. who pray to him. it becomes six different mantras. [they are Om. Its root is the Beeja Shakti and it has to be chanted for fulfillment of desires. Klim. Deity is Lord Rama. He who is the Paramatma to those thinkers. He who is black. These king of mantras consisting of three syllables also will fulfill all desires. who is digestive fire. 4. 9. That king of mantra-s is the Ekakshara (one-syllabled) which is the store house of fire. which is Lord Vishnu who is lying down and which is Lord Shiva who adorned with the crescent moon. 5. [The prayer (dhyana sloka) for the mantra is:-] He who sits on the lotus flower on the shores of river Sarayu. . meter is Gayatri. 3. who is the only source to those who wish for salvation.Hanuman replied: 1. He who shines as their soul to those souls. who shines in the Jnana-Mudra that he shows. seated on the throne of heroes. who is like the clear crystal. whose left side is adorned by Sita and Lakshmana. who shines like the millions of Suns.] 8. Saraswati and Lakshmi at the beginning of the four lettered mantra. For achieving victory one should chant this sloka ten million times. who is extremely peaceful. 14. 12. One should go to the middle of the forest and sit under the Kalpa-Vriksha (wishfulfilling or eternal tree) and assume the posture of “Pushpalata” (flowering creeper plant). 11. Gayatri as the meter.Namah”. 28. and the king of seven lettered mantras and the fulfiller of all wishes. and recites Ramaya Namah with OM and a pair of Shri-bija-s. 27. Maya-bija (heart-abiding) Ramaya Namah is recited again. Rama mantra is the giver of all excellence. OM. Who is anointed all over by ash. and Shakti bija and others are also (added). Who holds the trident. OM added to the four lettered “Ramaya” and “Hum Phat svaha” is another 8 lettered mantra. Om. Dhyanam: I worship that Rama. The Rishis and other adjuncts for the 8-lettered mantra are the same as for the 6-lettered ones. 31. 30. Who has three eyes. Sadashiva is spoken of as the Rishi. and Shiva-OMRamachandra as the Deity. Eight lettered mantra: Adding OM at the beginning to the two seven lettered mantras gives rise to two eight lettered mantras. 26. . the Deity is Rama. Shiva. And who is with matted hair. Shiva Rama Mantra: Glaum OM. the 8-lettered mantra also has Rama as the Rishi. 29. the pair of Shri bija-s. Thereafter one recites the mantra-s with the 6-limbed nyasa. The meter is Gayatri. Again. Who wears the crescent. The Rishis knowing Shri-bija as my Shakti. 38. as viniyoga for its adoration. the pinnacle of beauty. devoted wholly to recitation and oblations one shall chant mantra-s one-hundred thousand times. Rama Sharana Mantra: The chanting of “Ramam sharanam mama” (i. 35. the bow and the arrow. wished for by the celestials. And who is surrounded by Bharata and others. I worship the three eyed one. Who is Abhirama. the goad. Who has the royal umbrella held over his head. chant the mantra-s with the limbs. Rama Brahma Gayatri: Even the treasures and powers. Dhyanam: I worship that blue complexioned Rama.32. when the 8-lettered Raghava brahma-gayatri (is chanted). Who wears the crescent as ear ring. gingili seeds. Thus meditating. Who wears the bracelet on upper arm and bangle. And who holds the noose. Which are studded with shining gems.e. 37. Who sits in the hall of one thousand sixteen golden pillars. and lotuses. Who shines like millions of waxing moons. 36. offering bilva leaves. flowers. fruits. come by themselves. 34. Rama is my refuge) achieves much more than many other mantras which lead with difficulty . It is Om added to the seven lettered mantra. Dhyanam: I think of that Rama. middle of the eye-brows. OM is added at the beginning and end of the seven lettered (mantra). The great Vasishtha is the Rishi of this 10-lettered mantra. the meter is Virat. 45. Who sits under a golden canopy. knees. There is also the 8-lettered mantra which is well-known in seven-fold ways. 41. Whose doorways are decorated by mandara flowers. thighs. With the anga-nyasa for the wishes. Ten lettered mantra: The 10-lettered mantra gives all that is desirable wishedfor fruits. and feet. The beginning bija Visarga is the shakti.to mere ephemeral gains and productive of the misery of samsara due to the greed for the transient fruits. Who is seated on a throne. This mantra gives the fruits of all of them without the taint of greed and other defects. 42. Who is decorated by various gems. The Deity is Rama holding Sita’s hand. The form of Rama holding the bow in his hands and Sita within. Who is being served by Lakshmana. 51. kliim is Shakti. 50. the pranava is said to be the bija. Eleven lettered mantra: With the six-fold addition of OM-Maya-Rama-Kama-Vacsva. The meter is Virat. the slayer of demons. Brahma is the Rishi of the 10-lettered mantra. And who is adorned by ornaments. and recite the 10-lettered mantra for Rudra. 52. Who is adorned on the left by Sita. Rest of the worship is similar to the previous one. according to the wise. Who has a tranquil face. 46. 49.Surrounded by celestial vehicles. 47. 48. Who is praised by sages with reverence. This mantra should be recited a hundred-thousand times with exclusive devotion. The remainder (ritual) is the same as for the 6-lettered mantra.bija-s. The meter is jagati and Sri Rama the Deity. and hrim is kilaka. Who is blue complexioned. The Deity is Rama. . Of the 12-lettered mantra Sri Rama is the Rishi. One should remember Rama holding the bow and arrow. as regards nyasa and dhyana. Also to be added are OM. Fourteen lettered mantra: When Om is added. 61. kliim and svaha. Reciting the mantra-s with the anga-nyasa. Twelve lettered mantra: This 12-lettered mantra ends with Rama. one adds (the name) Rama. the fulfiller of all wishes. Add namah to Sitapataye Ramaya hana hana. Of this. and Rama is the Deity. the mantra is 14-lettered. Thirteen lettered mantra: The 13-lettered mantra has the same Rishi and other adjuncts as before. Rama who sheds joy on the mind. Ram is the bija. the wise one says jaya jaya twice. The 10-15 lettered mantra-a are offered in sequence with the anga-nyasa-s. Repeating the phrase twice with the anga-s and dhyana as before. and [arna meter (12-feet) or the 12 suryas??]. 60. Sixteen lettered mantra: Thereafter. Reciting the name Sri Rama and Jayarama thereafter. and the mantra-s with anga-nyasa. and hum the kilaka. Agastya is the Rishi. the Rishi and dhyana. As before. OM Hrridbhagavate Ramachandrabhadraya. 62. 55. 58. Brihati is the meter. kiim and also Bharatagraja. the rest is performed as previously.53. astra is shakti. 54. Fifteen lettered mantra: This is the 15-lettered wish-fulfilling tree (kalpa bhuruhah). 57. 56. the 16-lettered ends with the kavacha and asthra. Jagati meter. Seventeen lettered mantra: Adding OM. . OM namo bhagavata Ram at the end there-after. After chanting the 13-lettered. 59. the mantra is 17-lettered. 63. Nineteen lettered mantra: With the Kama bija. OM namo bhagavate Ramaya is to be recited. Then softly. 70. with Vishvamitra as the Rishi and gayatri meter and the Deity as Rama. 69. When svaha is added the mantra is 20-lettered. 65. is holding the thunderbolt in his hand and has ascended the chariot. 67. hana hana svaha is recited. The Deity is Vira Rama. 72. silently meditates on Rama. 68. The wise one after doing the anga-nyasa of the mula-mantra in parts. The 23-lettered mantra is the slayer of all enemies. 71. 64. Eighteen lettered mantra: Adding purushaya at the end gives the 18-lettered mantra. Twenty three lettered mantra: OM namo bhagavate viraramaya is chanted. bija-s and other (adjuncts) are as before. OM namo bhagavate Ramaya is to be recited. Then svaha for protection from dangers. the mantra is 19-lettered. OM Rama svabijaa Dasharathaya thereafter. Vishvamitra is the Rishi and Gayatri is the meter. who has put the arrow on the bow and facing Ravana. Then this 22-lettered mantra. . 66. Twenty one lettered mantra: The 21-lettered mantra fulfills all one’s wishes. Twenty lettered mantra: After uttering all the mantra-s one asks for all auspiciousness. Twenty two lettered mantra: Then one chants the all-auspicious sitavallabhaya (to Sita’s consort). 77. The bija-s and other adjuncts are as before. 78. the mantra has 26 letters. 80. Adding OM at the end makes it 27-lettered. Twenty eight and twenty nine lettered mantra: Adding svaha at the end makes this king of mantra-s 28-lettered. 74. meter is anushtubh. OM namo bhagavate rakshoghnavishadaya (obeisance to Bhagavan. Kliim. it becomes 29-lettered. slayer of demons). 79. Twenty six and twenty seven lettered mantra: With OM added at the beginning. 75.73. Ram bija. yam shakti. Twenty five lettered mantra: janavashyakaraya (conquering people) svaha and kiim are to be recited mentally. Twenty four lettered mantra: With nama OM added. is the 30lettered. to be repeated twice. and namah and bhagavate Ramachandraya thereafter. sarvavighat nivaraya (protect from all obstacle). and slayer of Ravana! Grant me wealth! 82. OM. the mantra is 24-lettered. Thirty and Thirty-one lettered mantra: Beginning with sva-bija. . The Rishi is Rama. When joined with OM. 81. One recites OM namo bhagavate Shri Ramaya and having said OM brahmane adds the words mam taraya (protect me). The 25-lettered mantra is to include sarvavashyakara (conquering all). one says the word ‘all’. O Ramabhadra the great archer! O Raghuvira the best of kings. With OM at the end. are recited for the Ishta deity. it has 31 letters. 76. 92. blue-complexioned. one chants (the mantra) mentally a million times. for these. 86. Thereafter. ‘amita-tejaseo (to one of immeasurable brightness). may Rama enlighten our intellect.] 88. Then one utters the rama gayatri given by ‘dashrathaya vidmahe’. 89. ‘prasannavadanam’ (tranquil-faced). and ‘madhura’ (sweet). After slaying Ravana. called the astra. and of the 3-lettered kavacha. and recite mentally . meditating on Rama in the heart. meditation. the same sequence as for the 6-lettered mantra has to be adhered.83. say namah (obeisance) to Balarama and Vishnu. Likewise. 84. coming for the protection of the three worlds. 90. thereafter one recites ‘to rakshoghnavishad’. For the eyes with the 5-lettered mantra. on the head. 85. Holding the bow and arrow. 87. followed by ‘sita-vallabhaya dhimahi. With 15-lettered and 12-lettered (mantra-s) and also for the 16-lettered mantra one has to perform anga-nyasa. While chanting the bija-s. OM namo bhagavate raghunandanaya. we meditate on Sita’s consort. Nyasa of the mantra is done in the heart. [May we know the son of Dasharatha. accompanied by Sugriva and Vibhishana. with the 5-lettered on the shikha. 91. For enchanting the earth and attain expertise in love add “madana” (cupid) to the “Sri Rama“ along with the Bhija of Maya. tanno Ramah prachodayat’. etc. 96. deity is Sita Bhagavati. For the Bharata mantra. 100. Seven time 17. 99. meter is anushtubh. 95. . (Rama) with 2 arms. one should utter the sound bha and bow to Bharata. While Meditating on the 10-lettered mantra . meter is Gayatri. 98. the 6-limb nyasa is done. Deity is Lakshmana. Sita is kilaka. the 4 purushartha-s are the viniyoga. and namah is the shakti. with 6 Rudra-s. meter is Gayatri. 94. Rishi is Brahma. One should meditate on Rama at the center of the hexagon (yantra). lam is the bija and shakti is namah. and deity is Raghava. thinking in the mind him with his body shining like gold. viniyoga is done for the Ishta. followed by the six lettered mantra and ending with “Swaha”. shrim is bija. Reciting with prolonged accents at the beginning. 97. holding a lotus. he holding the bow and arrow. For this (mantra) Agastya is the Rishi. personifying his body as of golden hue.and then look at Rama as the final refuge. The Rishi of this mantra is Janaka. 93. wholly devoted to Rama as the Supreme.000 times. and the 6 limbs. one chants it 100. For the Lakshmana mantra utter the sound lam and bow to Lakshmana.the 47 letters. 101. Long ending sound with Ram as the bija is recited with the 6-limbed nyasa. and resembling a lotus. It starts with “Shriyam Sita”. with shrim. utter the bija “sham” and ending with ‘shatrughnaya namah’. the altar is six-sided (hexagonal) and in the center is written the seed-letter (bijakshara) of Rama (Ram). holding the bow and arrow”. 105. Two-armed. wearing the girdle of munja-grass and is the servant of Rama. rest is done as before. devoted to the service of Rama. golden-bright. I worship the son of Sumitra. recite “I worship Kaikeyi’s brave son. Thus ends Second Chapter of Rama-rahasya Upanishad. Rishi is Agastya. slayer of Lavanasura. to Bharata the blue-hued one who is tranquil and serving Rama whole-heartedly. One should meditate on the two-armed one who is shining like gold. who is devoted to Rama’s service. The mantra of Hanuman. 106. Third Chapter Sanaka and other ascetics asked Hanuman: “O mighty son of Anjana! Tell us about the altar (yantra) for the worship by the aforesaid mantra-s.102. For the mantra of Shatrughna. 103.” Hanuman replied: “To begin with. and the other rituals to be done as previously. of which Ramachandra is the Rishi. 104. the Rishi-s and other adjuncts as before and the viniyoga for the control over enemies. “hrum hanumate” is the king of mantra-s. . & South-West. Above it on the sixth corner is the Sadhakam (Constant devotion). over this is the Kama-bija (Ram) and surrounding it. North-West. Ending with five-lettered mantra. rum. On the leaves. Encircling all these is OM. On the surrounding sides are the seed letters of Jiva-Prana-Shakti. raum. is the Vac (kiim). the 8-petalled lotus. On the face of each leaf the eight-lettered (mantras). OM namo Narayanaya On the face of each petal shri bija. Again. . On the petals. on the corners varaham hum. rim. rah bijaakshara-. North-East. Then sequentially the Heart mantra-s viz Ram.s the heart ‘astra mantras’ are to be recited.Below that in the second corner is the Sadhya (food offering). raim. jram. On them. In the 4 directions.Then the first round. in sequence. In a circular manner. This all-encompassing yantra fulfills all wishes and grants liberation. . In the intermediate directions. On the front of each in two circles – hram. Abiding there the 8 naga-s (serpents). Then the Bhupura of three lines. On them. the 32-petalled. Then in a circle. along with OM and namo. Then the 12-petalled.) On the front of the petal. (OM namo bhagavate vasudevaya) As well as on their fronts. In 12 directions. in all directions. sram. 12 aditya mantra-s. bhramam. On the petals hum phat with the 12-lettered Rama mantra – (OM namo bhagavate ramachandraya . 11 rudra-s. adorned with the rashi-s (Zodiac signs). Outside and surrounding is vashat. bhram. shrum. Thereafter. On front of these. in dative case. the 8 vasu-s. bram. the Narasimha bija. the Varaha bija. the 12-lettered Vasudeva mantra. the king of mantra-s – Nrisimha anushtubh. Maya bija (kiiM). with ‘anga-nyasa’. the blue lotus covering. the ‘cow covering’. the anga-nyasa is done at all the corners. For the 32-petalled. Indra covering. the initial cover of oneself. For the 12-petalled. Then covers of Hanuman and other. One should worship Raghava. At the root of the 8 petals. In the Bhupura. Then the covering by Vasudeva and others. Vasishtha covering. . this is the yantra and the tenth becomes the avarana (covering for it). In the first round. Outside this is the vajra covering. At the base of the second 8-petals. Dhruva covering.Beginning with the 1–lettered and ending with the 9-lettered (mantra-s). For the 16-petalled. in the center of the hexagon. First the hexagon. . the Shri-Maya (bija) In the corners. On the face. in all directions. Narasimha and Varaha. N-E. Adhara-shakti (basic power) is the seat of Vishnu’s worship. on the petals. in the front and back of the intermediate directions (S-E. Now. Outside this the Bhupura. In all directions. The remaining nine surround this. the 6-fold anga-nyasa. Then the first round.Offering thus. Then the 8-petals. in multiples of 6. the altar is described for the mantras starting with 10 syllables and ending with 32 syllables. At the six corners. S-W). N-W. Surrounding this. In a circular manner. Thus surrounded by Kama bija. In its center the name of the ‘ishta’. with 8 spear-points. one should silently chant. garlands of syllables. krodha. This is the Great Yantra. Sita. one should recite the 10-lettered and other mantra-s. Fourth Chapter Sanaka and other ascetics asked Hanuman: ”Describe the ritual for recitation of Rama mantras.“ Hanuman replied. fruits or naivedya (rice pudding . He should bathe thrice a day. “The one who intends to recite this mantra should follow the following procedures: 1. On the left.The first round is of anga-nyasa. He should take only sathvic foods like milk. The third avarana of cow. Fourth of Indra. 2. In their front. At the base of the 8 petals. Thus worshipping the yantra with devotion. Thus ends the Third Chapter of Rama-Rahasya Upanishad. Rama. two avarana-s of Hanuman. roots. Fifth of Vajra. In the center. the bow and the arrow. Grahastha. He should observe purity and practice dispassionate speech. Brahmin. He should also observe dispassionate action and show respect to all women. 6. He should meditate with utmost concentration on Rama as instructed by his teacher. He should follow the prescribed Karmas of the stage of his life (Brahmachari. 11. meditation and oblation to the fire. cow. Teacher. Similarly. as well as house-holders and in all stages of life. sound and the indwelling seed-letter as Fire and digits of the Moon. Wherefore. is freed from the sin of consuming intoxicants or of theft of gold or of the slaying of a Brahmin. the thunderbolt for evil. purified by air. this sacred hymn: Those whoever say “I am Rama in essence”. This is the Truth. This is the Upanishad. Om ! O Devas. and without a doubt is Rama Himself”. may we hear with our ears what is auspicious. May we see with our eyes what is auspicious. will not feel any want in this life. Praising them with our body and limbs steady ! May the glorious Indra bless us ! May the all-knowing Sun bless us ! May Garuda. as contained in the Atharva-Veda. Therefore.One who studies this Upanishad becomes sanctified by fire. bless us ! May Brihaspati grant us well-being ! Om ! Let there be Peace in me ! Let there be Peace in my environment ! Let there be Peace in the forces that act on me ! Here ends the Rama-Rahasyopanishad. . O ye worthy of worship !
