PSI3 AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY ECU MONITOR USERS MANUALMODELS S1001, S1002, S1003, S1004 FOR SUBARU IMPREZA - 16 PIN O.B.D CONNECTOR FITTED WITH ORIGINAL SUBARU ECU Document revision C May 29th 2003 for software versions 01 to 09 Please ensure you register your unit on our website (http://www.psi3.co.uk) to allow us to maintain our records and support you in the future. NOTE: Some units have time limited operation and will eventually cease functioning if not registered. PSI3 AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY ECU MONITOR USERS MANUAL Page 1 . The clock will forget its time settings if the power is removed. This must be connected only with the vehicle ignition power off and after a period of one minute has elapsed. (After removing and insulating the original wire). Information is displayed on a 2 line by 24 character LCD display with back lighting and is controlled by 4 buttons. UNIT START UP When the vehicle ignition is turned on. several features are included such as water injection control for enhanced vehicle performance. If this happens after several attempts. To get over this. This new supply MUST be fused with a 1 amp fuse. The unit does not interfere with the operation of the vehicle in any way. This first screens show the units serial number and software version then a custom message which can be set by the user will be displayed. POWER OFF and STANDBY MODE ISSUES The power for the unit is supplied from the vehicle normally via the 16 pin connector. With version 3 software or lower. The unit also records peak data such as RPM etc. When the unit is connected correctly. power is permanent or is switched on only when the ignition switch is on. (Except ECU reset function) ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION After the unit has been installed.. can turn on an external warning lamp. The monitor reads its information directly from the vehicle ECU via a bi-directional serial communications link and updates the display data approximately five times every second. The communications connector is located in line directly below the steering wheel column (above the pedals) in a recess. Software Version 4 onwards software has a time of day clock which is maintained by this power. This is due to the fact that the engine management electronics remain powered for a short while after the ignition has been turned off on some vehicle model types. After a short while. the communications cable must be attached to the vehicle. For connection of additional external equipment/features. on some vehicle models the unit will power up for a short while and then turn off automatically (newer cars). In addition. please call or email us as we can update your unit for new models if not covered FREE OF CHARGE as we are continuously adding new models and features. the unit will power up (may take a few seconds to react). Should the unit fail to identify the car or ECU. the vehicle type will be displayed will be displayed for a few seconds and then normal operation will begin. The connector only fits one way round. Due to the way that Subaru have wired this on some models. please refer to our web site database or CD ROM.PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The ECU monitor is a device designed to monitor the sensors and operation of the vehicle engine management system and assist the driver with performance information and useful diagnostic information when a fault occurs. The user is able to create screens with the data that they wish to display depending on personal preferences. This connector is at a 90 degree angle to the horizon. Simply locate the connector and plug in the communications cable taking care that the cable is out of the way of the pedals. the user can set their own alarm limits which when are exceeded. This is a problem as should the monitor unit continue to communicate with the ECU.. the actual data and the units of the data. A) NORMAL DISPLAY MODE This mode is entered automatically when the unit first starts up.. This is beyond our control so the following solution is used. The unit will now wait 2 minutes before checking the ECU for the ignition switch has been turned back on. OPERATING MODES There are 3 operating modes as listed below. Exhaust gas temperature (Version 7 onwards) if not available. Press EXIT to return to the normal display mode. press the EXIT button to save and exit. 9) USER MESSAGE SET UP This function allows the changing of the message that is displayed when the unit is powered up. This may be required for extreme cold or hot ambient temperatures. Use UP/DOWN arrow keys to change value and then press EXIT to save new value. Press the ENTER button to select either minutes or hours then use the arrow buttons to adjust the value. Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to adjust the value then press EXIT when correct value is shown. Typically the drivers name and registration number are entered here but you are free to enter what you please (up to 24 characters) Use the ENTER key to select the character to change then use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to change the character (space. 4) SHOW PENDING ALARMS Allows previously accepted alarms that are still current to be re-displayed. Press EXIT to save the new message. (Please refer to ALARMS section) 6) RESTORE DISPLAY ITEMS This allows the factory settings for the display items to be restored for all data pages 1 to 4. 3) SHIFT LIGHT SET UP Allows the shift light activation point control output to be adjusted. Use the arrow keys to adjust the desired contrast then press EXIT to save new setting. Press ENTER button to select the following options then use the arrow buttons to change the the option. When the correct time is displayed. 7) DISPLAY CONTRAST This allows the display contrast to be adjusted. Use ENTER key to select the desired item. Use UP/DOWN arrow keys to change value and then press EXIT to save new value. When complete. (Please refer to ALARMS section) 5) ADJUST ALARM SETTINGS Allows all user alarm set points to be adjusted. PSI3 AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY ECU MONITOR USERS MANUAL Page 5 . 8) SET CLOCK TIME (AVAILABLE ONLY ON SOFTWARE VERSION 4 ONWARDS) This allows the clock time to be set.2) WATER INJECTION SET Allows the control boost pressure of the water injection output to be adjusted. 10) USER OPTIONS 3 options are available for the user to customise the monitor operation. SHIFT LIGHT AND ALARM OUTPUT The water injection output is activated when the boost pressure is greater or equal to the user setting. SHIFT LIGHT AND ALAtRM OUTPUT Whilst the unit is powered. When first selected. Please refer to web site or CD ROM for wiring details. On some vehicles this also clears out the Fuel Lambda Learning tables and may make the cars low speed drive stability and idle speed erratic for the first few miles of driving. The output will light continuously when the engine speed is above or equal to the user setting. Please refer to the FAULT CODES section for the meaning of the numbers. When a user alarm is detected. Only the first 4 found fault codes found will be displayed. Connection to this output will require an external relay. press the EXIT button. 13) FORCE POWER OFF This function forces the unit to switch off immediately. the alarm/shift light output will flash fast and a message will also flash on the display warning of the problem. 13) RESET ECU COMMAND This function allows the fault codes in the ECU to be cleared (if cause has been repaired). the unit will ignore all key presses for 10 seconds. When an alarm is detected. Press EXIT to return to normal display mode or press ENTER to read out the historic fault codes. The only exception to this is when clearing faults after repairs when the ECU may have reduced performance to protect the engine from damage. ECU reset does not improve the engines overall performance. Please refer to web site or CD ROM for wiring details.12) READ FAULT CODES This function reads current and historic fault codes from the ECU. Alarms available are shown below LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE HIGH BATTERY VOLTAGE BOOST PRESSURE HIGH COOLANT TEMPERATURE HIGH OIL TEMPERATURE HIGH OIL PRESSURE LOW TEMPORARY DATA FAILED VOLTAGE <= USER SETTING VOLTAGE >= USER SETTING BOOST IS >= USER SETTING TEMPERATURE >= USER SETTING TEMPERATURE >= USER SETTING (Version 8 software onwards) PRESSURE < USER SETTING (Version 8 software onwards) The peak data memory has lost its contents. Should the alarm still be active after accepting it. The alarm output is only active for alarms that have not been accepted. This is typically set just below normal running boost to provide additional intercooling and performance with minimal water consumption. The alarm will be re-displayed if the alarm condition is removed and then returns. Contrary to popular belief. Press any key to power up again. NOTES: 1) Once turned off. SHIFT LIGHT AND ALARM OUTPUT The shift light and alarm share the same output. The unit will not power up again until any of the buttons are pressed. the current fault codes are read out and displayed (if any). the output will flash at a fast rate. This can be caused by unplugging the unit during ignition power on. the unit will flash up and alarm warning message every few seconds as a reminder. the shift light will not function. During an active alarm. 2) The unit will NOT automatically turn back on.
