Submitted by : Priyank Sharma Roll number – 13914803609 Group – M-4 and the gears are mounted on an arbor.  One of the gears. and then the other clamped. is popularly used for testing of spur gears. is called the “Master Gear”.Parkinson Gear Tester  This machine. in pair. . one of them being adjustable for centre distance. developed by James Parkinson. which is located on separate slides.  The floating slide is supported on needle bearing and nut loaded springs. A Parkinson Gear Tester . in the form of a waxed circular chart and records made of the gear variation in accuracy of mesh.  Movements of the sliding carriage as the gears are rotated and indicated by a dial indicator. .Principle Of Operation  The principle of this device is to mount a standard gear on a fixed vertical spindle and the gear to be tested on another similar spindle mounted on a similar spindle mounted on a sliding carriage. alternatively a recorder can be fitted . and these variations are a measure of any irregularities in the gear under test . maintaining the gears in mesh by spring pressure. The left spindle can be moved along the table and clamped in any desired position. so that they are free to rotate without measurable clearance. The two mandrels can be adjusted so that their axial distance is equal to the designed gear center distance.(Continued )  The gears are mounted on the two mandrels . . against spring pressure and it has a limited movement. running on steel balls .  The right mandrel slide is free to move. .Recording The Test Data  When the waxed paper recorder is fitted. the chart makes a revolution for each one of the gears mounted on the sliding carriage. the line traced records the movements of floating carriage. As the chart moves and rotates. A circle is drawn at the same time as the record as shown in figure. 3. and it’d take a large amount of machining operations. This chart represents the mediocrity. This chart represents the high accuracy of the manufactured gears. some machining process need to be carried out. This chart represents that the gear ion consideration is just not feasible to use. . and thus. so that principle operations may be carried out.Inferences Of Data 1. and smoothness of operations. to make it requisitively accurate. 2. Types Of Measurements . Accuracy= ±0.001mm € 2. the . Low friction in the movement of floating carriage. 5. Errors are not clearly identified. € 4.Limitations Of This Method Limitations of Parkinson gear tester: 1. Maximum gear diameter is 300mm € 3. Measurement dependent upon the master gear.
