THE COMMONWEALTH The Commonwealth is an association of 54 independent member countries which were formerly parts of the British Empire. These countries are found in all continents and their population is over 1.7 billion people. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Jamaica and India are some of its members. Queen Elizabeth II is Head of the Commonwealth. Commonwealth countries make a great effort to work as one and build a better world for the global community. They help each other to make their economies stronger and to improve their systems of government and the skills of their people. Heads of Government (usually Presidents and Prime Ministers) and Government Ministers of member countries meet regularly to discuss how to co-operate with each other. Some current projects include bringing the quality of education and schools to higher standards, for teachers and students, supporting immunisation campaigns so that children are healthier, making people more aware of HIV/AIDS and how to deal with it, helping young people to borrow money to start small businesses and studying the rainforest so we learn to take good care of the environment. AFRICANS IN NEW YORK Anyone can notice a considerable degree of racism in the exchanges between the African and African-American communities in New York. African-Americans are not African any more. There are no references to Africa in their discourses. The African community‟s arrival with its mosques, restaurants and shops in a neighbourhood like Harlem sparks tensions and nobody says, “Here come our African brothers!” Africans and their American cousins live side-by-side without actually mixing. This is a daily reality in this part of New York where the African population, especially from Senegal, has grown considerably. For most New Yorkers, this new wave of immigration is incarnated by the street- sellers seen everywhere in Manhattan‟s shopping areas. They sell false Rolex watches, T-shirts, or umbrellas. However, people do not really know much about them, beyond this reductive stereotype. People do not adventure into their “territory” in west Harlem, Little Senegal, which is indeed quite another world. Some black Americans do make the effort to seek to re-appropriate their African roots. They can sometimes be seen eating at the African restaurants or buying cloth, craftwork, or music at Harlem‟s African market on a quick, imaginary journey. After all, Little Senegal already offers a real taste of America. QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. (2 POINTS) (0.5 points for each correct answer) Add TRUE or FALSE and copy the evidence from the text to support your answer. NO marks are given for only true or false. 5. ROYALTY AND WEDDINGS Spain's first 20th century monarch was King Alfonso XIII, whose attempts to dominate the government made him unpopular. He survived several assassination attempts, but went into exile in 1931 after the Republicans came to power. Although he did not abdicate, he never returned to Spain. He died in 1941. Spain became a monarchy again in 1947, but it was not until 1975 that a new monarch - Alfonso's grandson King Juan Carlos – ascended to the throne. He continues to reign today, playing a mostly ceremonial role. His wife, Queen Sofia, was born a Greek princess. The King and Queen of Spain have two daughters and a son, Crown Prince Felipe, who is the heir to the throne. Some months ago the Spanish royal family made the announcement that one of Europe‟s most eligible bachelors, Crown Prince Felipe, would marry a TV news reader on May 22 nd . From early on, the Spanish heir made it clear he knew exactly what he was looking for in a potential spouse. In his opinion, the future Queen had to understand, appreciate, and know how to represent that function in Spanish society. Although duty comes first, the prince always insisted that he would not sacrifice what every happy union needs, true love. QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. A DEVASTATING TERRORIST ATTACK On March 11 th , 2004 Madrid suffered the biggest terrorist attack in all its history. A series of explosions ripped through several trains in the Spanish capital during Thursday morning's rush hour, killing approximately 200 people and wounding more than 1,200, according to Spain's Interior Ministry. The dead and injured there were said to be mostly workers and students on their way to Madrid from the east of the capital. A London-based Arabic newspaper received an e-mail claiming responsibility from a group supposedly linked to the Al Qaeda terrorist organization. In a late day press conference the Spanish Interior Minister said investigators had discovered an abandoned van 15 miles east of Madrid, with detonators and audio tapes of verses from the Koran in Arabic. Spanish officials initially thought that the group responsible for the bomb explosions was ETA, the Basque separatist organization that has carried out a campaign of bombings and assassinations for decades in pursuit of independence for the Basque region of northeast Spain. However, ETA has never been able to mount an attack of this scale. INTERNET MUSIC PIRACY The music industry has announced an intensification of its campaign against illegal file-sharing. It calls on music fans to buy their music online legitimately, rather than risk the legal consequences of illegal file-sharing. There are now over 100 legal online music sites in Europe offering a total of over one million music tracks. Users of file-sharing services such as KaZaA, EDonkey/eMule and Gnutella are the target. This is a warning that no illegal uploaders are immune from legal action, whichever service they are using. Individuals are charged with acting illegally by making copyrighted music available on the Internet without the permission of the copyright holder - this is against the law throughout Europe and internationally. These people are likely to face compensation payments averaging several thousand euros. Illegal file-sharing has contributed to the decline in global music sales - down US$6 billion in the last five years. For that reason, awareness campaigns around the world have included music coalition websites, media advertising, university and school projects and instant messages sent directly to people using unauthorised services. The fight against online music piracy has become the subject of daily debate, in the media, in government and in ordinary households. QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. THE EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING IN THE ARCTIC Scientists say changes in the Earth‟s climate from human influences are occurring particularly intensely in the Arctic region, evidenced by widespread melting of glaciers, thinning sea ice and rising temperatures. A recent study says the annual average amount of sea ice in the Arctic has decreased by about 8% in the past 30 years, resulting in the loss of an area bigger than Texas and Arizona combined. The most comprehensive study of Arctic warming is based on ice core samples and other evidence of climate conditions such as on-the-ground and satellite measurements of surface air temperature. It predicts that there will be a steady rise in global temperature as a result of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels and other sources. The process is likely to accelerate in the Arctic, a region that provides important resources such as oil, gas and fish. That would harm polar bears, ice-dependent seals, migratory birds, caribou and reindeer herds, as well as local people such as Inuit, whose main food source comes from hunting those animals. Since it takes decades, if not centuries, to reverse warming from carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, some damage is inevitable. However, longer-term impacts could be reduced significantly by cutting emissions globally this century. QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. (2 POINTS) (0.5 points for each correct answer) Add TRUE or FALSE and copy the evidence from the text to support your answer. NO marks are given for only true or false. 5. Human influence has no effect on the Arctic region. 6. The amount of sea ice in the Arctic has stayed the same since 1975. 7. SAVING NEMO Finding Nemo, the film, may have left cinemas, but in the southern sea the loss of brightly-coloured anemone fish is a problem. For more than a decade the population of anemone fish in the ocean has become smaller and smaller. The beautiful fish are popular pets and thus they are often caught to be sold at fish markets. These little Nemos are quite vulnerable to environmental changes, though. Many suffer from the lengthy transportation times on their way to the market. Most die a few days after being kept in a fish tank. Yet the demand continues, and hunters comb the seas. To make money quickly, some even add small drops of cyanide to the water. This causes all the fish in the vicinity to become unconscious for a short time and float to the surface. This makes it easier to get them, though many of the fish poisoned in this way will soon die. Some species like the clown anemone fish are on the verge of extinction and the only solution to give an answer to the commercial demand is to have fish kept at a farm in order to produce new animals. In addition, the balance of the underwater ecology will not be destroyed. QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. ENCOURAGING CHILDREN TO RUN MARATHONS Thousands of children across Texas are part of a programme that challenges kids in kindergarten through to fifth grade to run a marathon – 400 metres to 800 metres at a time. The director of Marathon Kids works with many elementary schools where physical- education teachers are in charge of making a list of the children who show an interest and have their parents‟ permission. As a result, the parents adopt some of the healthy habits that help prevent chronic diseases. Diabetes and heart disease are closely linked to obesity and physical inactivity. About 30% of American children and teenagers are overweight and obese, and the rate of diabetes is rising. The programme works like this: at the start of the school year, children get a mileage log, that is, a little notebook where they can have a written record of the distance run. On the back of the log there is a nutritional chart for colouring in circles, noting the fruit and vegetables they eat each day. The goal is to eat five pieces a day. When the kids complete their marathons, over about a five-month period, a celebration is held and students get their medals and some other gifts, such as T-shirts. QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. BRITISH TELEVISION Fawlty Towers is one of the finest situation comedies British television has ever seen. The concept for Fawlty Towers was born in the Gleneagles Hotel in 1971. John Cleese was staying at this hotel, while filming a programme. The hotelier at that time was a man of infinite rudeness called Donald Sinclair. There was a case of mistaken identity with a customer‟s bag. Eric Idle left his bag by the front door of the hotel. When he returned later that day, he could not find it. Idle asked Sinclair if he had seen the missing bag and Sinclair responded that it was not his business. Fascinated by Sinclair and his furious dislike of guests, John Cleese decided to stay on at the Gleneagles and even invited his wife, the actress Connie Booth, to stay with him. The pair of them observed Sinclair‟s unusual behaviour. Three years later, John and Connie decided to draw upon their experience at the Gleneagles, and Fawlty Towers was created for the BBC channel. Although Fawlty Towers is now considered one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, the initial reactions received from the press and public were mediocre. However, by the time the last episode had been broadcast the show had become immensely popular. Adapted from FAWLTY TOWERS DVD. BBC 2 QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. PURITAN SOCIETY IN COLONIAL AMERICA The Church was the basis of 17 th century life in colonial America. Most people in Massachusetts were Puritans – colonists who had left England seeking religious tolerance. But the strict Puritan code was far from tolerant. It was against the law not to attend church – where men and women sat on opposite sides through long services. The Puritan lifestyle was rigid: people were expected to work hard and repress their emotions or opinions. Even the dark Puritan dress was dictated by the church. Since Puritans were expected to live by a rigid moral code, they believed that all sins – from sleeping in church to stealing food- should be punished. It was God who would punish sinful behaviour. When a neighbour would suffer misfortune, such as a sick child, Puritans saw it as God‟s will. Children had to behave under the same strict code as the adults – doing everyday jobs and attending church services. Children rarely played because Puritans saw toys and games as sinful distractions. Fear of magic and witchcraft was common in Puritan New England, as it had been in Europe for centuries. Over 100 suspected witches were condemned to death in New England during the 1600s. The hangings in Salem in 1692 were the last ones in America. Adapted from http://school.discovery.com QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARDS IMMIGRATION IN IRELAND According to „Immigration and Residence in Ireland‟, a Government document published in 2005, “In the last five years over 100,000 persons from outside the European Economic Area have been admitted to the state for employment purposes.” The study confirms that public attitudes to immigrants vary depending on age group and social class. In general, younger people and those from a higher income group are more accepting of immigrants and of the changes in society which inevitably follow from the relatively large-scale immigration that Ireland has been experiencing for several years now. The analysis also suggests that those who have more direct contact with immigrants are less likely to feel threatened by immigration. The fact that 80% of respondents agree that it is good that children in Ireland are growing up in a multicultural society is encouraging because the new „multicoloured‟ Ireland is here to stay. However, there are very few people who see it as good to have immigrants living in their community and many are uncomfortable with intermarriage. The challenge is now to deal with the fears that some people have and to commit as a society to encouraging the integration of those immigrants who are part of our ever changing country. THE RIGHT TO DIE Ramón Sampedro was paralyzed from the neck down in a diving accident as a young man. He had his music, his radio and television, his visitors, his window view. He could control a computer, and write using a pen he held in his mouth. He was cared for by his family, his brother and sister-in-law, his nephew, the lawyer from a Right-to-Die organization, and Rosa, the woman from town who worked as a disc jockey and pedalled her bike out one day to meet him. His family loved him and didn't complain about the burden; his brother, in fact, was completely opposed to euthanasia. The film "The Sea Inside" is based on Ramón‟s life. In 1998 he succeeded in dying after planning his death in such an ingenious way that, even if all the details were discovered, no one could be legally charged with the crime. Sampedro is played by Javier Bardem, an actor of charm and gentle masculine force. In "The Sea Inside," Ramón does not care to live any longer and demands the right to die. He argues his point with great conviction. Bardem and Alejandro Amenábar, the film‟s director, do not believe everyone in Sampedro‟s position should die. “This is simply the story of one man”, they say. PLANNING A TRIP Today, millions of travellers are using the Web to learn about destinations, find last-minute bargains, locate hotels, and plan their adventures. Travel agents can still be tremendously helpful, particularly for complex international journeys. However, the Internet puts the tools for trip planning into the hands of average computer users, enabling them to plan their own trips, at any time of the day or night. After choosing a destination, travellers can use the Net to find schedules and fares for airlines, hotels, and rental cars. Then, if they so choose, they can book online. The most important booking websites let travellers compare rates among hundreds of airlines, hotel chains, or car rental companies. While the Web offers remarkable tools for finding bargains and making bookings, it's much more than a one-way medium. Its inherent beauty is its interactive aspect -- in other words, through the Net travellers can find others with similar interests and get advice from them. The Net is an efficient tool for trip planning, and, under the right circumstances, an excellent way to save money. Yet the benefits extend far beyond finding good deals and some people are finding that planning a trip can be almost as enjoyable as the excursion itself. THE OFFICIAL MASCOTS OF THE BEIJING 2008 OLYMPIC GAMES Like the Five Olympic Rings, from which they draw their colours and inspiration, Fuwa (name of the five Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games) carry a message of friendship and peace through the Olympic spirit. Dedicated to helping Beijing 2008 express its theme of “One World, One Dream” to every continent, Fuwa reflect the deep desire of the Chinese people to reach out to the world in friendship through the Games. Fuwa also represent the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals - the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow - and the Olympic Flame. Besides, when you put their names together - Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni – it means "Welcome to Beijing," offering a warm invitation that reflects the mission of Fuwa as young ambassadors for the Olympic Games. In the ancient culture of China, there is a grand tradition of sending good wishes through signs and symbols. Each of Fuwa symbolizes an element of nature: sea, forest, fire, earth and sky. They also represent a different blessing: prosperity, happiness, passion, health and good luck will be spread to every continent as Fuwa carry their invitation to Beijing 2008 to every part of the globe. THE ILLNESS OF THE 21ST CENTURY More than 35,000 cases of colon cancer have been diagnosed in the UK in 2006. The colon cancer symptoms are the following: rectal bleeding, a feeling that you need to empty your intestines even when you have just been to the toilet, and abdominal pain. These symptoms are not uncommon - and could be a sign of something far less serious. However, doctors advise that if such symptoms persist for longer than a couple of weeks medical attention should be sought. To investigate these symptoms, doctors often ask patients to undergo colonoscopy. This procedure involves inserting a very small camera into the colon. This can be uncomfortable, but is very seldom a painful experience. High fat diets favoured in the Western world are thought to have increased the number of intestine cancers. People are encouraged to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, as this appears to reduce the risk. The main option for treating this illness is surgery. But when the cancer is well-established, chemotherapy is used. Only when the cancer has spread beyond the wall of the colon, it becomes harder to treat. However, estimates suggest that nine out of 10 colon cancers detected early can be successfully treated. Adapted from http://www.bbcnews.com QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. THE CONTROVERSY IN BRADFORD ABOUT FACE VEILS Muslim girls could be asked not to wear veils in the classroom. Bradford City Council is drawing up instructions stating that pupils and staff should not wear veils in lessons. The new uniform guidelines say efforts must be made to accommodate religious clothing, but stress the importance of teachers and pupils being able to make eye contact. Head teachers have applauded the decision, saying that veils make communication between teachers and students difficult and this slows the learning process. In addition, schools need to be able to identify individual pupils in order to maintain good order and notice intruders. There are divided responses from the Muslim community. Dr Tag Hargey of the Muslim Education Centre welcomed the ban on veils. In his opinion, when you hide the face, that actually not only dehumanises the person involved, but also creates a difference, a bridge of non-understanding between communities. However, British Muslims do not accept the argument that veiled women contribute to segregation or are a problem to integration. The wearing of the veil has always been a controversial practice and there is no consensus amongst Islamic scholars. Although a recent guidance has been established, each school will have to make the final decision. Adapted from www.bbcnews.com QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. HOW PETS CAN IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH Having a pet can, at times, test your patience but most pet owners will agree that pets give back much more than they receive in the form of companionship and love. The United States is a pet-loving nation, having more dogs and cats than any other country. Pet owners treat their pets like any other member of the family, perhaps even giving them special birthday and holiday presents. But there is another reason to have a pet: owning a pet can actually improve the health of its owner. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, having a pet can decrease your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and feelings of loneliness. Perhaps the most notable benefit has to do with heart health. Several studies have found that people who have had a heart attack survive longer with a pet than without. The director of UCLA’s People-Animal Connection says she believes the human-animal relationship offers many social, psychological and physiological benefits: ‘Among other things, animals contribute to raising self- esteem, significantly lowering anxiety levels, improving attitude toward others and opening lines of communication.’ So, which types of pets provide the most health benefits? Most commonly, dogs and cats are mentioned in the studies. However, any animal has the potential to make your life more pleasant. Adapted from http://www.sixwise.com QUESTIONS I. This is the claim of a UK male professor, Sam Shuster, who did some research on 400 different people. He discovered that men made more jokes about themselves than women, and that men’s jokes were more aggressive. He said three-quarters of male “jokers” made offensive comments, while most women tended to smile. Shuster believes the male hormone testosterone is the cause of men being funnier. He found that teenage boys were aggressive in their humour and this aggression changed with older men into a funnier form of joking. Earlier studies suggest women and men use humour differently. Women tend to tell fewer jokes than men and male comedians are greater in number than female ones. Men also use people they know as the subject of their jokes, often in a negative way. Married men seem to like making jokes about mothers-in-law. British comedian J ohn Moloney disagreed with Shuster’s findings. He said that in his 21-year career in comedy, he had never noticed that men were funnier than women. The difference is that if a group of women are together and the conversation decreases, they don't automatically start telling jokes, which men do. Adapted from www.newsenglish.com QUESTIONS I. The decision, made by J udge Richard Holwell, will affect around 2,000 different places, including big-name chains such as McDonald’s and Starbucks. This figure makes up almost ten percent of all the restaurants in the city. The city’s Department of Health believes the new governmental rule on providing calorie information will help achieve its goal of reducing obesity. J udge Holwell said: "It seems reasonable to expect that some consumers will use the information given to select lower calorie meals…and these choices will lead to a lower rate of obesity." New York’s health commissioner Dr Frieden stated the decision was a victory for New Yorkers. Many of the restaurants affected by the new ruling are not happy. New York State Restaurant Association official Chuck Hunt said restaurants should decide if they wanted to include calories on their menus. He added that most of the restaurants affected were already providing this information, but in a different format. Dr Frieden disagreed and said that McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken were desperate to keep that information out of the hands of their customers. Adapted from http://www.bbcnews.com QUESTIONS I. Hikers often seek beautiful natural environments in which to walk. Ironically, these environments are often fragile: hikers may accidentally destroy the scenery that they enjoy. Generally, protected areas such as parks have regulations to avoid harming the environment. If these walkers follow them, their impact can be minimized. Such regulations include forbidding wood fires, restricting camping to established camp sites and imposing a quota on the number of hikers per day. Many hikers follow the philosophy of ‘Leave No Trace’: hiking in a way such that future hikers cannot detect the presence of previous hikers. Followers of this practice respect strict rules and leave no food waste or food packaging. Sometimes, hikers enjoy viewing rare or endangered animals. However, some species are very sensitive to the presence of humans. Walkers should learn the habits of those species in order to avoid adverse impact. There is one situation where an individual hiker can make a large impact on an ecosystem: inadvertently starting a wildfire. For example, in 2005, a Czech backpacker burned 7% of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile by knocking down an illegal gas portable stove. Adapted from www.wikipedia.org QUESTIONS I. SOMALI PIRATES ARE CAUSING PROBLEMS AGAIN The piracy problem looks like it is here to stay despite the recent interventions by the French and American navies. The pirates tried to hijack another ship, maybe in revenge after three Somali pirates were killed by the US navy. Why does the problem persist? According to maritime security analysts, piracy will continue as long as the financial rewards for a successful hijacking are so great and Somalia remains so lawless. Certainly the international effort to stop the problem is relatively limited. There are only fifteen to eighteen international warships to guard and control an area of more than a million square kilometers. Although investigations could be organized on the pirates’ hometowns, it seems unlikely that there will be any major increase in the military effort unless there is a spectacular hijacking involving the deaths of many people. The reluctance to mount a major international naval operation in the area may also be due to the relatively small scale of the problem. Last year, according to figures from the International Maritime Bureau, nearly twenty three thousand ships passed through the Gulf of Aden. Only ninety two were hijacked. ST VALENTINE’S DAY It is that time of the year when couples show their love for each other by sending cards, flowers and chocolates. But Valentine’s Day is not only about public displays of affection: in recent years it has also become big business. In the UK alone, more than £20 million is spent on flowers, while in the United States over $1 billion is forced to spend on chocolates. It is said that the first recorded Valentine’s card was sent by the imprisoned Duke of Orleans in 1415. It is believed that he tried to find comfort from his imprisonment by writing love poems to his wife. Valentine’s Day is now celebrated in many countries around the world. However, the traditions often differ from place to place. In J apan, for example, it is customary for women to send chocolates to men, while in Korea April 14th is when the unfortunate men who received nothing on Valentine’s Day gather to eat noodles and show sympathy for each other. Valentine’s cards can also be used for less than romantic purposes. Police in the UK city of Liverpool send Valentine’s cards to criminals who failed to appear in court or have not paid fines. EXPERTS CALL FOR MORE TESTS Health experts in Brussels have been told that despite a fall in the global figure for the number of people affected by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and AIDS, the situation in Europe and central Asia is getting worse. Around 2.4 million people in Europe and Central Asia are living with HIV, approximately 760,000 of them within the European Union. What is concerning health professionals is that new infections are on the increase, and the number of children and adults living with the disease has doubled in the past six years. Even more worrying, at least half these people don't know they're infected. In some countries as many as 70 percent don't realise they are HIV positive. And these people are much more likely to transmit the disease than those who have been diagnosed. So a Brussels conference of more than 300 health workers from across Europe and Central Asia has called for much wider testing for HIV, trying to reach those who do not know they are infected. The experts warn that late diagnosis of HIV is causing unnecessary deaths from an illness that can now be treated. People will not die of HIV if detected early enough. PROPUESTA A GRANDPARENTS INCREASE THE RISK OF OBESITY IN CHILDREN Leaving your children with their grandparents may be bad for the little ones‟ health according to new research in the „International Journal of Obesity‟. The British study showed that children who are looked after by their grandparents tend to be more overweight or obese. Researchers looked at over 12,000 toddlers between the ages of nine months and three years. Kids who are looked after by their parents or who go to nurseries had no similar risk of weight problems, although children of richer parents were more at risk, especially if the mother had a university education. Almost a quarter of pre-schoolers are overweight. This research could help reduce the rate of obesity in Britain. It should also send an important message to grandparents – stop filling your grandchildren with snacks and sugary treats. We all know grandparents like to give children all they want. It is the same all over the world. There are several possible reasons why young children are more at risk of obesity with their grandparents. One is that older people might be less aware of proper nutrition and so give their grandchildren unhealthy food. Another possible cause is that older people are less active and might not play with the children. Adapted from http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. PROPUESTA B CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART A study carried out in Germany over eight years has found that chocolate may be good for your heart. They compared how much chocolate was in the diet of almost 20,000 people to the number of heart attacks and strokes people had. Lead researcher Brian Buijsse said: "Chocolate is not as bad as we used to think, and may even lower the risk of heart disease and stroke." Mr Buijsse‟s team found that dark chocolate was the healthiest kind to eat; milk chocolate has fewer effects and white chocolate no effects. The German study showed that people who ate the most chocolate reduced their risk of having a heart attack by 27 per cent. The risk of suffering a stroke was cut by 48 per cent. Nutrition experts believe that natural compounds in chocolate called flavonols are good for our heart. Flavonols also help reduce blood pressure. They are found in cocoa beans, and this is why dark chocolate, which has more cocoa, contains more of them than milk chocolate, which has more fat. Buijsse warns people not to suddenly eat lots of chocolate: "Eating higher amounts will most likely result in weight gain. If people start eating small amounts of chocolate, it should replace other high- calorie sweets or snacks." Adapted from http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. PROPUESTA B HAITI IN RUINS AFTER HUGE EARTHQUAKE Television pictures are slowly beginning to show the damage in Haiti following the huge earthquake on Tuesday. A magnitude 7.3 quake, just 16km from the capital, hit the Caribbean nation as people were going home after work. It was the worst earthquake to strike Haiti in more than two centuries. Many major buildings in the capital Port-au-Prince have collapsed, including the Presidential Palace and the UN headquarters. Haiti's President Rene Preval described the scene in the capital as "unimaginable" and fears "well over 100,000 people" may have died. The Red Cross says up to 3 million people have been affected. Haiti's ambassador to the USA, Raymond Joseph, said there was "no way of estimating" how many casualties there were. Countries around the world are acting quickly to send whatever help they can to Haiti. US President Barack Obama has promised America will do all it can to help. He vowed "unwavering support" following a “particularly cruel” disaster. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. More than half its people live on less than two dollars a day. The nation was still trying to recover from being hit by four deadly hurricanes in 30 days in 2008. Its economy is in ruins and it has a long history of corruption and coups. PROPUESTA A The Digital Divide A recent survey has shown that the number of people in the United Kingdom who do not intend to get Internet access has risen. These people make up 44% of UK households, or 11.2 million people in total. The research also showed that more than 70 % of these people said that they were not interested in getting connected to the Internet. This number has risen from just over 50% in 2005. Lack of computer skills is the reason given for not getting Internet access, though some also said it was because of the cost. More and more people are getting broadband and high speed net is available almost everywhere in the UK, but there are still a significant number of people who refuse to take the first step. The cost of getting online is going down and Internet speeds are increasing, so the main challenge is to explain the relevance of the Internet to this group. This would encourage them to get connected before they are left too far behind. If the gap between those who have Internet access and those who don’t continues to widen, those without access will get left behind and miss out on many opportunities, especially in their careers. PROPUESTA B A 14-year-old boy from Lancashire who voted in the general election said he did it because he "wanted to make a difference". Alfie McKenzie, from Poulton-le-Fylde, voted for the Liberal Democrats in the Wyre and Preston North constituency, after being sent a polling card. He was only caught when he confided in a teacher at school. His head teacher called the local council and police. Wyre Borough Council and Lancashire police have both said they are investigating. Alfie went to his local polling station before school on Thursday, wearing a trench coat, glasses, jeans and smart shoes so officials would "think I was a Tory". "I knew they wouldn't suspect an under-18 for voting Tory," he said. Alfie said he was "very serious" about politics and socialism, but decided to vote Liberal Democrat as a tactical option. He said: "There's not a socialist candidate in our area and unfortunately even if there was it would be a wasted vote. I've looked into it and the best option for a socialist is the Liberal Democrats. "I did want to make a difference - unfortunately I didn't." Alfie's mum, Nadine Wiseman, said she had asked him not to vote, after he received the polling card, but she "wasn't surprised" when he did. Adapted from www.bbc.co.uk QUESTIONS I. PROPUESTA A 2011 TO BE THE BEST YEAR EVER Futurologists and experts who study New Year’s resolutions predict 2011 will be the best year ever for many people. This is welcome news for the billions around the world who hope this year will be better than last year. 2011 will see less poverty and there will be a greater number of people with access to computers. One expert looks forward to new developments that will help the environment. California will open the world's largest solar power plant and several electric cars will go on sale, including some much-awaited models. It’s going to be a great year if you study English as there will be more cool websites and applications for students to brush up on spelling, vocabulary and grammar. It seems more of us will keep our New Year’s resolutions this year. According to a New Year’s Day poll, the top resolution is to spend more quality time with family and friends, talking to them rather than being on the phone or texting messages in front of them. The second most popular thing we will resolve to do is get fitter. Experts say many of us could keep this promise well into February instead of giving up in mid-January. Other top plans include quitting smoking, getting out of debt and helping others. Of course, learning English featured high on many people’s lists. PROPUESTA B ONE BILLION PEOPLE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT Around one billion people in the world don't have enough healthy food to eat, according to a new report. The 2010 Global Hunger Index shows that child malnutrition is one of the biggest causes of lifelong ill health worldwide. Despite the number of starving people in the world falling between 1990 and 2006, recent years have seen that number go up slowly, with the data from 2009 showing more than one billion hungry people. The most recent figures from 2010 suggest the number may again be falling, but this data isn't yet complete. Twenty-nine countries - mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia - have levels of hunger described as alarming or extremely alarming. The global food price crisis and the worldwide recession have contributed to this rise, says the report. And children under two are most at risk. Malnourishment at this stage harms physical and mental development and its effects are mostly irreversible, causing lifelong damage. The authors argue that improving child nutrition would have the biggest effect on reducing global hunger. They estimate that child malnutrition could be cut by around a third by providing improved health care and nutrition, not only to young children, but also to mothers during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Reducing the numbers of hungry people will also significantly improve productivity and economic development. Adapted from http://www.bbc.co.uk QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION. PROPUESTA A Do you suffer from Facebook depression? A new study suggests that social media sites have created a new phenomenon known as "Facebook depression". The American Academy of Pediatrics recently warned parents about the possible dangers of networking websites on their children’s mental health. Report co-author Gwenn O’Keefe described the way social interaction is changing: "For some teens and tweens, social media is the primary way they interact socially, rather than at the mall or a friend's house," she said. Ms O'Keeffe added: "A large part of this generation's social and emotional development is occurring while on the Internet and on cellphones. Parents need to understand these technologies so they can relate to their children's online world." The report says it is essential for parents to be aware of how social media sites can affect children and that the Internet is not always a healthy environment for kids. The writers also urged parents to be on the lookout for cyberbullying, sexting and online predators. They recommended parents take an active role and discuss things like bullying, privacy and feeling down because of what’s happening on Facebook. A recent poll stated that 22 per cent of teenagers log on to a social media site more than 10 times a day and more than half at least once a day. There are conflicting reports as to whether Facebook helps youngsters, by allowing them to express themselves, or isolates them from society. PROPUESTA B The Three Sheiks and Queen of Arabia Maura, who liked to be thought of as the most beautiful and powerful queen of Arabia, had many suitors. One by one she discarded them, until her list was reduced to just three sheiks. The three sheiks were all equally young and handsome. They were also rich and strong. It was very hard to decide who would be the best of them. One evening, Maura disguised herself and went to the camp of the three sheiks. As they were about to have dinner, Maura asked them for something to eat. The first gave her some left over food. The second sheik gave her some unappetizing camel’s tail. The third shik, who was called Hakim, offered her some of the most tender and tasty meat. After dinner, the disguised queen left the sheiks’ camp. The following day, the queen invited the three sheiks to dinner at her palace. She ordered her servant to give each one exactly what they had given her the evening before. Hakim, who received a plate of delicious meat, refused to eat it if the other two sheiks could not share it with him. This Sheik Hakim’s act finally convinced Queen Maura that he was the man for her. “Without question, Hakim is the most generous of you,” she announced her choice to the sheiks. “So it is Hakim I will marry”. PROPUESTA A HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE US: WHAT DOES IT COST? Well, the first thing to know is that the costs of undergraduate study in the United States are different from school to school. Private colleges and universities generally cost more than public ones. Another thing to keep in mind is that not all students pay a school's "published price." Financial aid and scholarships may reduce the cost. Here are a few numbers for this school year from the College Board organization. The average published price for undergraduate study at a four-year public college is about seven thousand dollars. That is for students from "in state." Students from other states and international students often have to pay the highest prices. They pay an average of more than eighteen thousand dollars. And these prices are only for tuition and fees. Food, housing, books and supplies can add from ten to twelve thousand dollars a year. American students often have to take out a loan to help pay for their education, so they try to save money by starting their education at a two-year public college, also known as a community college, where the average tuition this year is about two thousand five hundred dollars. A few American colleges provide free education, and others pay all first-year costs for their foreign students, but they are expected to pay one thousand dollars a year after that. PROPUESTA B AN EXERCISE ROUTINE When we talk about an exercise routine we tend to focus on the word 'exercise' rather than on 'routine', but regularity and constancy are the key elements to keeping fit, so make sure your exercise routine is part of your daily habits and vice versa: don't forget that physical chores such as housework or dog-walking, and leisure activities such as dancing or walking can all contribute to your keep fit routine. It’s also important to focus on health because it's not all about losing weight but about being healthy. You may find that it’s easier to lose weight if the health benefits that go with it are your priority. On the other hand, don't aspire to quick changes. Those sudden losses of weight that occur when you skip meals aren't usually relevant. You'll do much better to adopt new and healthy habits, both in terms of diet and keep fit. Just like the tortoise and the hare, you'll find that “slow and steady wins the race.” Finally, let other people help you. Although you are the one who has to keep to the routine, it'll be easier if you let your friends and family know what you're doing. That way, they'll be more likely to encourage you. If you've got a birthday or anniversary coming up, make it clear that flowers, a book or a spa gift voucher is a better present than chocolates. Adapted from http://www.hellomagazine.com QUESTIONS I. PROPUESTA B GOODBYE TO TYPEWRITERS India is well known for its legions of computer programmers, but the country also has another face as the last bastion of the typewriter. Manual typewriters stayed popular in India long after developed nations had entirely switched to the keyboard and mouse. As recently as the 1990s, the Mumbai plant of a company named Godrej and Boyce was turning out 50,000 typewriters a year. They were popular in a nation where reliable electricity supplies - essential for computers - are still by no means guaranteed. But even in India, typewriter sales have slumped in the last ten years. Gradually, every manufacturer stopped making them, leaving only Godrej's Mumbai plant - and that switched to making fridges two years ago. And now the firm says it only has 500 typewriters left in stock. It's a far cry from the heyday of the 1950s, when India's then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru held up the humble typewriter as a symbol of the nation's independence and industrialisation. The first commercial typewriters were produced in the United States in the 1860s. The typewriter was the dominant office technology for more than a century until the computer came along. PROPUESTA A THE JOURNEY In those days, the journey from our village in the hills to the nearest big town was not an easy one. There was a bus twice a week, and it was necessary to walk about three kilometres to where the bus waited. There was no motor road to the village itself in those days. Nowadays, the villagers have a much easier life, and that long walk is unnecessary. My father used to take things to sell in the town, and we carried everything down the steep, rocky path early in the morning. I remember how excited I was when he took me with him for the first time. I was only eight years old and everything was a big adventure. The bus was full of travellers and stopped at every village on the way. It rolled noisily down the mountain roads and turned many corners above narrow valleys until it got to the plain. That took four hours. On the plain I saw wide, flat fields. People were working in them. Some of them waved as we passed, and I waved back. Then at last we came to the town. It was never a big place, but to me it had more houses than there were stars in the sky. Adapted from Reason to Write. QUESTIONS I. READING COMPREHENSION.
