De La Salle University – Science and Technology ComplexBiñan, Laguna Gokongwei College of Engineering A Design Proposal of a PABX System By Jan Mason S. Sanchez Mariel Lian M. Santisteban Kenneth A. Suarez Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the requirements for the course ADVACOM – Advanced Communication Systems To Engr. Roy Francis Navea October 17, 2013 I. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT For the following people who help us in the completion of this project, Private Automatic Branch Exchange for a college building, we would like to extend our sincerest appreciation for their efforts and contribution. To our professor, Engr. Roy Francis Navea, we would like to express profound gratitude for his guidance, useful insights and suggestions that lead us to the fulfilment of this project. We also acknowledge the hard work of Enrico D. Suarez in his college thesis, from which we pattern the design of the college’s floor plan. For our gracious parents, we thank them for their undying support, patience, understanding and heart-warming love all throughout the making of this project. Above all, we offer our greatest thanksgiving to God, for without Him, this project would not have been a success. Sanchez, Santisteban, Suarez i PABX Design II. ABSTRACT To be able to give the most efficient and effective service as possible, having an organized and reliable telephone system is a must. With the current technological innovation, communications as a necessity have been continuously changing, improving every specification and virtually upbringing the fastest way possible for transactions. This paper intends to design a proposal PABX plan and layout for a two-storey college building. The design of the PABX system aims to divide and transfer incoming calls to a college department and help them connect their respective networks. One of its goal is to branch out the extension lines properly such that department and offices can communicate and share information effectively. In this branching, it includes the respective office local numbers and a helpful automated message. This documentation is composed of the essential files and data to support the viability of the proposed PABX design. Sanchez, Santisteban, Suarez ii PABX Design called private branch exchanges (PBX) . either internally or externally. including automated greetings. a PBX is the backbone of a corporate phone network. Since almost all private branch exchanges today are automatic. is a tool that connects all telephone lines in a workplace. If it is internally. Over time. it creates the connection between two users. And. Second. such systems . dialling menus. then the call will follow the internal call coverage settings. the PBX maintains the connections as long as the user requires the connection to be active. the receiver's coverage settings will be enacted. finally. Business networks utilizing a PBX have a number of lines or a T-1 digital connection coming into it to provide service and branches open connections throughout the enterprise. PBX systems provide four basic functions. among others. Suarez iii PABX Design . it disconnects users when the phone is hung up. Originally. the abbreviation "PBX" usually implies a "PABX. Small companies typically use multiple-line systems to handle their incoming and outgoing phone calls. it provides call logs and tracks usage. In simple terms." PBX stands for private branch exchange. Santisteban. If it cannot make the connection externally. In this scenario. it routes incoming calls to the right departments within the organisation.required the use of a live operator. PRELIMINARIES A private automatic branch exchange (PABX) is an automatic telephone switching system within a private enterprise. It also permits internal calling from extension to extension. System Cards – These include devices for switching. and batteries that allow the system to run round the clock. Sanchez. Suarez iv PABX Design . lst of extension lines should be properly documented and stored safely. Wiring should normally sealed always. Steps to install a PABX system: 1. power connections and grounding must be checked and verified. If wires are not sealed. and power cards that facilitate the PABX operations. Grounding is very important for any PBX machines to work. Wiring for extension lines . The room should be dust free. One should always keep in mind for future enhancement and redundancy should be maintained. than probability of cable cutting or disconnection would increase. Power back. UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) – It consists of sensors. logic. It should be air conditioned area. Microcomputer – This is the central processing unit that interprets caller requests. The most essential parts required to set up a PABX system include the following: Switchboard – One common feature is the IVR (Interactive Voice Response). Disadvantages:  Cost of setting up which includes equipment. Santisteban. Sanchez. Employees using mobile phones are not able to receive work related phones as PBX is not designed as such.  Important add on features are quite expensive which results in escalating cost. PBX systems have started becoming aged as they work only within a centralized office. features extension and up gradation is possible.  In high-tech expensive phone systems.  Most PBX systems are rigid in case of flexibility of adding new extension lines and the need for buying new systems arises as business expands.  With globalization. Suarez v PABX Design .  Incoming calls cost is minimal and sometimes even free. Santisteban. The main purpose of this study is to design a system architecture of a PABX for a two-storey college building that could handle local conversations in a low-cost yet effective and efficient manner.Chapter 1 OBJECTIVES 1. system diagram. 2nd floor. system functionality and costing.  The system uses wire line connections and it is connected using star topology. to ensure its safety.  The study included the essential elements for the proposed PABX system to achieve desired performance and these are the equipment allocation.  The main PABX system is located at the IT office. Santisteban.  The system is open for possible expansion. Suarez 2 PABX Design .  The design has 5 PSTN lines (analogue trunk). floor plan.  Established local numbers are composed of three digits. 3 ISDN trunk lines and 17 local/extension lines.Chapter 2 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS The researchers identified the capabilities and limits of the study to aid them with the design of the Private Automatic Branch Exchange (PABX) for a university.  All the telephones and fax machines involved are interconnected within the building. Sanchez. system flowchart.  The connections are limited for the faculty and staff only.  The proposed design of the PABX system is within the range and boundaries of the floor plan being considered in this project. reliable and in its prime functionality since the composition of the equipment being used are new and in good condition. The proposed design is only capable and limited to the following components listed:  The performance and quality of the system is considered efficient. these includes the following:  Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) – the design has main access to ISDN.
