While timely Government intervention and a series of bailout packages are expected to stabilise Western economies, the current uncertainties are expected to persist until market conditions improve. The recessionary wave sweeping the world, however, is having a direct bearing on the outsourcing industry in India, with demand dipping as global companies adopt a “wait and watch approach.” While the economic downturn has compelled companies to relook at their outsourcing strategies in a bid to cut costs, the interesting fact remains that outsourcing can in fact help organisations tide over tough times and maintain competitiveness. The current recession, therefore could create a huge opportunity for India's IT-BPO industry, particularly as discerning organisations understand and avoid the pitfalls of cost-focused outsourcing and apply business-outcome-focused outsourcing to emerge as winners. At the same time, the untapped potential of India's vast domestic IT-BPO market, which is now beginning to open up and actively deploy IT, is adding to the air of optimism. The ITBPO industry has also begun to focus on the domestic sector, both for IT services and BPO projects and is likely to increase its revenues from this segment. The growing maturity of India's IT-BPO players and their strong value proposition for customers centred around quality and “businessoutcome-focused outsourcing,” are further strengthening the India story. The good news is that Indian IT-BPO companies have been early adopters of “Green IT,” and have been launching focused initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of the industry. NASSCOM too has launched its Green IT initiative and will be taking this forward actively during 2009. The Indian IT-BPO industry therefore has reason to be optimisticnot only on account of the existing potential in outsourcing, as well as the domestic market, but also because of its own positive performance, especially in the current sluggish market scenario. Even during this difficult phase, the sector has notched up double digit growth in 2008, managed to generate employment for over two million Indians and remained a net hirer. Clearly, it's robust business practices, key differentiators and strong fundamentals that have enabled IT-BPO players to garner the largest share of the global sourcing pie and maintain India's position as the world's leading outsourcing destination. Over the next few years, we can expect the country's IT-BPO industry to deepen customer relationships, reengineer itself to maximise value and diversify as much as possible to become a “Global Services leader.” Government support, so crucial in the past, will need to continue. By providing an enabling environment and a conducive, progressive regulatory framework, the Indian Government can help the IT-BPO industry thrive, even in the most uncertain phase of its history. NASSCOM meanwhile, will continue to play the role of a facilitator and catalyst in ushering in change and the IT-BPO industry's next phase of growth. As any change demands, the organisation is initiating fresh efforts and plans in collaboration with all the stakeholders within the sector. Dr. Ganesh Natarajan Chairman, NASSCOM 2 NASSCOM : Annual Report 2008-09 Message from the President The Indian IT-BPO industry, following several decades of high, year-on-year growth, is now experiencing a slowdown, a result of the global economic downturn triggered by the crisis in the financial sector in the in the US. An interlinked global economy and interdependency between nations has caused countries across the world to be impacted by the developments in the US and other Western markets. India, meanwhile is mirroring the developments taking place in the overseas domains, even though the country is managing to sustain GDP growth between six and seven percent. The IT-BPO industry meanwhile is facing significant challenges on account of the drop in the outsourcing business and IT budget freezes in global customer organisations. Tough times need tough measures and quick and timely responses from the industries facing the crisis. As an organisation that has been reflecting the concerns of the Indian ITBPO sector for more than two decades, NASSCOM is extremely watchful of the developments taking place in the overseas markets. At the same time, it has stepped up action and its activities to ensure that member companies are in-the-know about the global developments and their impact on the Indian IT-BPO sector. As our Annual Report indicates, NASSCOM, was quick to recognise the signs, and initiate a spate of activities to spotlight existing challenges and how companies could survive and win in the months ahead. NASSCOM's roster of events and strategic initiatives remained absolutely full during 2008 and in the current year, with the environment remaining extremely fragile, the organisation will work even harder to support its members and guide them through the uncertain times. In the year ahead, NASSCOM and its member companies will be focusing on transforming the Indian IT-BPO industry, enhancing its global competitiveness and ensuring that it plays a more significant role in the emerging global economic order. It is an ambitious target, that all the stakeholders in the IT-BPO ecosystem are keen to achieve. In achieving this target, we will redouble our efforts in each of our areas of attention, a fact that we hope will find reflection in our Annual Report 2009.
