HIGHER COLLEGES OF TECHNOLOGYRAS AL KHAIMAH WOMEN’S COLLEGE BUS 3406 – Work Experience Journals (Semester 2 , 2013 – 2014) Journal 4 Student name: Maha Alsayyah H00127018 Teacher name: jonne row 8, June, 2014 Student name: Maha Alsayyah Student ID: H00127018 Section: H01 Company: Customs Department 1 JOURNAL 4 Competencies and Skills (CLO 3 and 4) Describe how you applied, IT, business, customer awareness and numeracy skills during your work experience:  There is a lot of the skills and this is some of them: IT Business Customer awareness Numeracy skills - I use Microsoft Excel to inter information or calculate formulas, and organize schedule then send it by the email. - Microsoft Word to work on the business plan, doing some reports and draft lines.. etc. - Using outlook to send the emails, and make appointments or meeting. - Organize meeting with employee and discuss their business plan and see if there is something missing. - Review reports - Planning and managing employees activity - Prepare employee feedback and give it to the manager - Listen to other suggestion that improve the work - Aware customers about the restricted goods that any goods of which the import and export of it is restricted under the provisions of the common customs low or any other low. - Aware the customers about prohibited goods that any natural materials or agriculture, animal, industrial of intellectual produce mentioned in the tariff nomenclature or may be classified under a tariff heading thereof - Make sure that the - The most difficult part for me is to calculating the financial analyze because I hate dealing with number its make me confused but I try to do it in the right way with my colleague and its work and I done my work and that make me feel confident and do it again and again. - Using Excel to sum the goods that they bought for the company and how much money did they spend monthly. - Counting the working year for the employee Student name: Maha Alsayyah Student ID: H00127018 Section: H01 Company: Customs Department 2 customers know about customers duties for example al kohl they pay 50% of duties but for the cigarettes they pay 100% in the department Compare the skills you learned in the HCT College with the skills needed to succeed in the workplace:  Until now there is nothing need to be more success because everything is great and walking through the success: - We communicate with the customers or people who would like to applied for a job in the friendly way. We called them and gave them appointment when they arrived We let them a sit in a waiting room and ask them what they would like to drink tea or coffee until the interviewer come to meet them. Then after two days we send them email if we accept them to come again and if we reject them we said sorry. Evaluate the competencies and skills that you still need to develop: - I hate calculation and numbers so I need to develop my financial skills and that will help me especially in the business plan to have a successful business in the future. How could the HCT College have prepared you better for Work Experience? - They communicate with the department we choose to see if they are welling to accept the trainee or not. But unfortunately, they take a long time until they tell us which place we will do our work placement on it. They told us a day before we start our work placement. This affects me negatively because I don’t know any thing about this department and I don’t where is located. So in the first week I have a problem in finding the place so I arrived late because I lost. I hope they gave us a week before to know the place prepare and get information even visit the place to be more confortable because sometimes we cant be familiar with the place so we have time to change our choice. No, because all they work in Arabic there is no English and there is no skill that you learn because all of their works like routine For example:  Interring data and information in specific program.  Scanning paper and organize the file.  Transfer calls.  How to deal with customers.  Look through employee and arrange trainee program for them by compering between two program to see which one it better for them then send email for them to let them know when it will be and how long to register then after the trainee finish we make certificate for them Would you like to work in this organization or a similar type of organization when you graduate? I don’t think so, because this type of the organizations is close and all women working there we don’t see lot of customer their work in the office and like routine. As for me I like changing and doing something in and out the company meeting customer new people and help them also go to other department participate with them on something that the benefit goes for the government and help to improve our company and work environment How has your Work Experience placement affected your future career plans? What do you want to do in the future? Work experience is like spending time in a workplace doing what they tell you to done to get to know better. That helps me to learn more about job industry for example meeting with people and ask them question like if they are happy with their work, what did they learn and what challenges did they face and that giving me more ideas about what kind of career I might go into. Also, work experience help me to compare what college subject relate with job and match the skills with the job position.
