Have you ever entered a tropical rainforest? It’s a special, dark place completely different from anywhere else. A rainforest is a place where the trees grow very tall. Millions of kinds of animals, insects, and plants live in the rainforest. It is hot and humid in a rainforest. It rains a lot in the rainforest, but sometimes you don’t know it’s raining. The trees grow so closely together that rain doesn’t always reach the ground. Rainforests make up only a small part of the earth’s surface, about six percent. They are found in tropical parts of the world. The largest rainforest in the world is the Amazon in South America. The Amazon covers 1.2 billion acres, or almost five million square kilometers. The second largest rainforest is in Western Africa. There are also rainforests in Central America, Southeast Asia, Northeastern Australia, and the Pacific Islands. Rainforests provide us with many things. In fact, the Amazon Rainforest is called the “lungs of our planet” because it produces twenty percent of the world’s oxygen. One fifth of the world’s fresh water is also found in the Amazon Rainforest. Furthermore, one half of the world’s species of animals, plants, and insects live in the earth’s rainforests. Eighty percent of the food we eat first grew in the rainforest. For example, pineapples, bananas, tomatoes, corn, potatoes, chocolate, coffee, and sugar all came from rainforests. Twenty-five percent of the drugs we take when we are sick are made of plants that grow only in rainforests. Some of these drugs are even used to fight and cure cancer. With all the good things we get from rainforests, it’s surprising to find that we are destroying our rainforests. In fact, 1.5 acres, or 6,000 square meters, of rainforest disappear every second. The forests are being cut down to make fields for cows, to harvest the plants, and to clear land for farms. Along with losing countless valuable species, the destruction of rainforests creates many problems worldwide. Destruction of rainforests results in more pollution, less rain, and less oxygen for the world. Question 36: What is the passage mainly about? A. How much oxygen rainforests make B. Facts about rainforests C. Kinds of forests D. Where rainforests are located Question 37: The word “humid” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______. A. rainy B. foggy C. cloudy D. wet Trang 4/6 - Mã đề 008 Question 38: Rainforests provide humans all of the following EXCEPT? A. oxygen B. fresh water C. lungs of the world population D. drugs used to fight and cure cancer Question 39: Why is the Amazon Rainforest called the “lungs of the planet”? A. It uses much of the world’s oxygen. B. It provides much of our air. C. It helps circulation. D. It helps us breathe. Question 40: The world “all” in paragraph 3 refers to _______. A. food people eat B. rainforests C. the world’s species D. drugs people use Question 41: The word “harvest” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______. A. reduce B. gather C. destroy D. create Question 42: What is the most likely reason why the author is surprised that we are destroying rainforests? A. It will be too expensive to replant them. B. They are necessary for the fight against cancer. C. It will be too difficult to grow food without them. D. They are necessary for the health of our planet. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50 The atmosphere that originally surrounded the earth was probably much different from the air we breathe today. The earth’s first atmosphere (some 4.6 million years ago) was most likely hydrogen and helium – the two most abundant gasses found in the universe – as well as hydrogen compounds, such as methane and ammonia. Most scientists feel that this early atmosphere escaped into space from the earth’s hot surface. A second, more dense atmosphere, however, gradually enveloped the earth as gasses from molten rocks within its hot interior escaped through volcanoes and steam vents. We assume that volcanoes spewed out the same gasses then as they do today: mostly water vapor (about 80 percent), carbon dioxide (about ten percent), and up to a few percent nitrogen. These same gasses probably created the earth’s second atmosphere. As millions of years passed, the constant outpouring of gasses from the hot interior – known as outgassing – provided a rich supply of water vapor, which formed into clouds. Rain fell upon the earth for many thousands of years, forming the rivers, lakes, and oceans of the world. During this time, large amount of carbon dioxide were dissolved in the oceans. Through chemical and biological processes much of the carbon dioxide became locked up in carbon sedimentary rocks, such as limestone. With much of the water vapor already condensed into water and the concentration of carbon dioxide dwindling, the atmosphere gradually became rich nitrogen. It appears that oxygen, the second most abundant gas in today’s atmosphere, probably began an extremely slow increase in concentration as energetic rays from the sun split water vapor into hydrogen and oxygen during a process called photodissociation. The hydrogen, being lighter, probably rose and escaped into space, while the oxygen remained in the atmosphere. Trang 5/6 - Mã đề 008 This slow increase in oxygen may have provided enough of this gas for primitive plants to evolve, perhaps two or three billion years ago. Or the plants may have evolved in an almost oxygen-free (anaerobic) environment. At any rate, plant growth greatly enriched our atmosphere with oxygen. The reason for this enrichment is that plants, in the presence of sunlight, process carbon dioxide and water to produce oxygen. (by C. Donald Abrens – “Meteorology Today – An Introduction to Weather, Climate and the Environment”) Question 43: What is the main idea of the passage? A. The atmosphere on the earth has changed over time. B. Hot underground gasses created clouds, which formed the earth’s atmosphere. C. Plant growth depended on oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere. D. The original atmosphere on the earth was unstable. Question 44: The word “enveloped” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to _____. A. changed B. surrounded C. escaped D. characterized Question 45: According to the passage, outgassing eventually led to all of the following EXCEPT ______. A. increase in the carbon dioxide content of sedimentary rocks B. the formation of clouds C. the formation of body of water D. decrease in the level of nitrogen Question 46: The word “they” in the second paragraph refers to ______. A. steam vents B. gasses C. molten rocks D. volcanoes Question 47: Which gas is ranked second in the large amount? A. oxygen B. helium C. nitrogen D. hydrogen Question 48: The passage suggests that oxygen remained in the atmosphere because _____. A. it was caused by outgassing B. hydrogen became trapped in limestone C. it was heavier than hydrogen D. sun rays created equal amounts of hydrogen and oxygen Question 49: The phrase “At any rate” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.
