One is the feast day of its official patron saint, Our Lady of the Assumption every Aug. 15, and the other one is the feast day of St. Therese of the Child Jesus every fourth week of October. The 26th and 27th of that month are important dates for Calubian, being the site of St. Therese Diocesan Shrine. On instructions of PNP Chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome, the anti-kidnapping group under Senior Superintendent Renato Gumban will try to establish any pattern of syndicated kidnapping in all previous cases involving foreigners linked to the kidnapping of their fellow countrymen. Bartolome’s order was prompted by the arrest on Thursday in Cebu City of a South Korean believed to be the prime suspect behind the kidnapping of another Korean and his Filipina wife in the southern city. Based on AKG records, this is not the first time that a foreigner was involved in the kidnapping of his countryman. “We need to look deeper into kidnapping cases of similar nature to determine if there is a pattern of syndicated crime operation of transnational dimension,” Bartolome said. Three Filipino henchmen of the arrested Korean suspect are also under police custody for direct involvement in the kidnapping. On Saturday, Korean Song Sung Heum, 33; and Filipinos Gregorio Dealagon, Richard Dealagon, and Leonardo Bolabon were presented for inquest proceedings before government prosecutors for the kidnapping and serious illegal detention of couple Jun Hyun Chung and his Filipina common-law wife Charisse Santiago. AKG records indicate that the couple was snatched by the three Filipino suspects from their home in downtown Cebu City late morning of October 24, shackled, shoved into a car and driven around Cebu suburbs. Police Chief Superintendent Elmer Ragadio Soria, PNP-8 regional director, informed reporters that out of the more than 6,000 police force in Eastern Visayas more or less 5,000 policemen will be deployed to the field starting Wednesday, October 31 to Friday, November 2 for the observance of the All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. PCSupt Soria informed reporters that the entire police force in Eastern Visayas has been placed on full alert to provide maximum security coverage and public safety services to motorists and commuters who will be traveling in the region going home for the “undas” and at the time when people will flock to cemeteries throughout the region to observe All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day to ensure traffic management, maintain peace and order during the massive convergence of people and vehicles all headed to and in the cemeteries. Arpon Corona Slamming PNoy (to my mind) Boomerangs on his face The recent tirade of impeached Chief Justice Renato C. Corona thrown to President Noynoy Aquino relative to his (deserved) fate is obviously a desperate attempt to “cleanse” his damaged reputation aimed at diverting attention of opinion leaders and the media to veer away from their belief and perception about his unquestionable sullied reputation. -oOoCorona who was impeached last December 2011 for “culpable violation of the Constitution; betrayal of public trust for misdeclaring his wealth”, and others more in the charge sheets filed in the Impeachment Trial has besmirched his reputation. He occupied that high seat supposedly to preside over cases of lawbreakers of the land whose cases are elevated to the Supreme Court – the court of last resort, so to speak. -oOoAware of this significant function in our Philippine justice system, it behooved upon the Impeachment Court to apply the law to every and anyone – the low and the high in the bureaucracy and society for that matter, and having been proven based on authentic evidences of documents to prove his guilt Corona was impeached. The day before that, October 31, is generally an ordinary day which makes it even more bizarre to think that the evening before All Saints Day has got to be spooky as commercially practiced these days. Editorial Editorial Foulshot By: Al Ellema Scouting One great if not the greatest movement in the world, the one founded by Lord Robert Baden Powell, will close its monthlong activities today. The scouting movement which is well integrated into our schools system had the entire of October as its month. Various activities are held in public schools and in some private schools as well. This movement that is worldwide is well established in our country and is made part of the schools’ extra-curriculum. Scouting affords boys and their gender counterparts, the opportunity for significant experiential learning that are often not taught at home and in the four corners of the classroom. It brings boys and girls to develop scouting skills that would make them better persons. It molds their character so that these young children will become upright citizens of society. They hone their undiscovered talents and skills. They discover their true self by interactions with their fellow scouts, in ways that are lively and fun. The movement teaches young individuals the basics of life’s survival which include cooking, first aid, communications skills through semaphore flag signaling, live saving, knot tying, trail signs and orienteering and many more. These skills are taught by way of friendly competi- ing and fun. Many children are able to discover their talents and skills through the activities of scouting. Apart from school encampments mostly in public schools, the scouting month went without much notice. It may be due to the apparent lack of scoutmasters who can handle the scouts in the various activities and trainings. We know too well the great gender disproportion among our teachers, the male being outnumbered in most cases, resulting in female teachers taking the cudgels for the boys. But there is apparent lack of scouting activities at the council level as people notice the absence of scouts doing community volunteer to page 5 deserving sad fate therefore now is out of sync and goes beyond the bounds of legal ethics. Why? The next step is to charge him in court employing the same strong evidences used during the impeachment trial that eventually found him guilty and therefore was thrown out of office. He should therefore, at this point in time, simply prepare his defense during the hearings in the Sandigan Bayan to be scheduled soon. -o0oHis penchant in few occasions at prejudging the case in his favor via media interactions speaks clearly of a doubtful legal “expertise” he has between his ears. Some 1,000 board feet of illegally cut Lauan species has been already sliced as boat keel locally known as kasko while at the distance, near the barangay proper some 19 pieces sliced lumber with estimated volume of 220 board of Lauan species was also seized. The kasko has a width of 10 to 15 inches, thickness of 20 to 25 inches, and a length of 40 feet. Another miracle happened on the night of Oct. 10, 2009 when workers rushed to finish the expansion of the chapel to be used the following day for an important occasion. Work was snagged because the scissors for cutting galvanized steel was misplaced. The situation seemed hopeless when a dog approached the workers with a pair of ordinary scissors on his mouth. Somehow the workers managed to make do with the tool and finish the work on time. She will be there for seven months and her job is basically to continue the programs and projects that I have started. But it is up to her to start new projects, but I think seven months is too short already,” he added.
