One is the feast day of its official patron saint, Our Lady of the Assumption every Aug. 15, and the other one is the feast day of St. Therese of the Child Jesus every fourth week of October. The 26th and 27th of that month are important dates for Calubian, being the site of St. Therese Diocesan Shrine. Hundreds of devotees, some coming from Cebu and Manila, make a beehive to the shrine under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Naval in nearby Biliran province. Scattered showers and thunderstorms. High 86F. Winds light and variable. Chance of rain 60%. These are red letter days for this remote town that is isolated by an underdeveloped road network. Calubian is only about 53.8 kms. from Ormoc City but the grueling three-hour trip on dirt roads make it seem so far away. Its nearest commercial center is Naval across the island which can be reached by a half-hour motorized boat ride costing P160 per passenger. [email protected] or call Alma, 2 Leyte Samar Daily Express Police to probe involvement of foreigners in kidnapping THE Philippine National Police (PNP) is conducting a research on the involvement of expatriates and other foreigners in kidnapping activities in the Philippines. On instructions of PNP Chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome, the anti-kidnapping group under Senior Superintendent Renato Gumban will try to establish any pattern of syndicated kidnapping in all previous cases involving foreigners linked to the kidnapping of their fellow countrymen. Bartolome’s order was prompted by the arrest on Thursday in Cebu City of a South Korean believed to be the prime suspect behind the kidnapping of another Korean and his Filipina wife in the southern city. Based on AKG records, this is not the first time that a foreigner was involved in the kidnapping of his countryman. “We need to look deeper into kidnapping cases of similar nature to determine if there is a pattern of syndicated crime operation of transnational dimension,” Bartolome said. Three Filipino henchmen of the arrested Korean suspect are also under police custody for direct involvement in the kidnapping. On Saturday, Korean Song Sung Heum, 33; and Filipinos Gregorio Dealagon, Richard Dealagon, and Leonardo Bolabon were presented for inquest proceedings before government prosecutors for the kidnapping and serious illegal detention of couple Jun Hyun Chung and his Filipina common-law wife Charisse Santiago. AKG records indicate that the couple was snatched by the three Filipino suspects from their home in downtown Cebu City late morning of October 24, shackled, shoved into a car and driven around Cebu suburbs. On the evening of the same day, Cebu City police and AKG operatives arrested the trio and rescued the couple while the suspects were attempting to withdraw cash from the victim’s account at an auto-teller machine. The suspects readily admitted to be acting on orders of Song who reportedly demanded P4 million from the victims. Hours later, Song was arrested upon arrival at the Mactan International Airport from South Korea. Among sports, it is basketball that tops the most among the list of popular ball games. Reason why most towns and even barangays have basketball court; some are concrete, halfcourt and other are just improvised. This made Uniliver Philippines through its product Alaxan to implement a project that would not only promote sports but also revive the volunteerism spirits of Filipino, which we call “bayanihan” or “pintakasi” in local term. The bayanihan concept that Alaxan through its tag line “Alaxan Galing Mo!” is implementing is called “Court of Inspiration.” Ten selected areas in the Visayas and Mindanao were chosen by the company to become beneficiary, among which is Brgy. 95-A in this city. Last Sunday, representative from Uniliver and Geiser Maclang, their promotional firm, launch the project in this city through a groundbreaking ceremony participated in by barangays officials and more than 70 male volunteers. For 21 days the full court basketball court is expected to be finished through a shifting schedule of volunteer workers. “We want to revive the spirit of bayanihan, this beautiful trait of Filipinos that is slowly forgotten by most of us,” said Gerry Pacled, program media coordinator. “We hope that after 21 days or less, the construction would be finished so that residents of the barangays would benefit it immediately,” she added. Pacled added that once the basketball court is finished four PBA legends are to grace its inauguration, will conduct basketball clinic and a chance to play basketball with some barangays residents. The land where the basketball court of Alaxan is to be constructed according to Brgy. 95-A Councilman Engr Rogelio Obiña was donated by the family of their incumbent barangays chairman. “He did not hesitate to allow and donate the land to Alaxan for the implementation of this project because according to him this is an early gift for us in the barangays,” the councilman said. He added that, they had long been looking and waiting for anyone who could give them founds in construction a basketball court for their barangays, and this was answered through the Uniliver. He added that this would inspire their constituents and make them become active in sports that could result to a healthier lifestyle. Arpon Corona Slamming PNoy (to my mind) Boomerangs on his face The recent tirade of impeached Chief Justice Renato C. Corona thrown to President Noynoy Aquino relative to his (deserved) fate is obviously a desperate attempt to “cleanse” his damaged reputation aimed at diverting attention of opinion leaders and the media to veer away from their belief and perception about his unquestionable sullied reputation. -oOoCorona who was impeached last December 2011 for “culpable violation of the Constitution; betrayal of public trust for misdeclaring his wealth”, and others more in the charge sheets filed in the Impeachment Trial has besmirched his reputation. He occupied that high seat supposedly to preside over cases of lawbreakers of the land whose cases are elevated to the Supreme Court – the court of last resort, so to speak. -oOoAware of this significant function in our Philippine justice system, it behooved upon the Impeachment Court to apply the law to every and anyone – the low and the high in the bureaucracy and society for that matter, and having been proven based on authentic evidences of documents to prove his guilt Corona was impeached. The public welcomed the decision. -oOoRenato Corona’s public outbursts, targeting a wellmeaning President about his “T Evening of hallows In Mexico, however, November 1 is Day of the Dead where family members gather and say prayers for their departed loved ones. In the Philippines this tradition is called All Souls’ Day. People across the globe observe All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day practically in the same manner – visit the graveyard of loved ones and friends, light candles and pray for the soul of the departed who could yet be in purgatory believing that the dead need prayers, too. Others have the pagan tradition of bringing “offerings” to the dead. Protestants believe otherwise, though. If Catholics acknowledge three classifications of churches (people) namely the triumphant church or those in heaven, militant church or those still living and suffering church or those who are in purgatory, Protestants believe only one destination for the dead – either heaven or church. For them, purgatory does not exist, thus prayers are of no effect in bringing souls to heaven to those who to page 6 rick or treat!” Thus yell the children outside the door on the eve of All Saints Day. This tradition is famous among neighborhoods in the Western states. There certainly are some high-end villages in the country and even malls that are into this custom. Basically a pagan practice, celebrating Halloween in the evening of Hallowmas in the very secular way is not at all doing the justice to the holiday’s purpose. In the Roman Catholic Church, All Saints’ Day is a holy day of obligation where the faithful should hear the Holy Mass and receive the Holy Communion, unless restrained for valid reasons. The day is intended to commemorate all those who passed away and have attained the beatific vision in Heaven or otherwise called saints. The day before that, October 31, is generally an ordinary day which makes it even more bizarre to think that the evening before All Saints Day has got to be spooky as commercially practiced these days. Editorial Editorial Foulshot By: Al Ellema Scouting One great if not the greatest movement in the world, the one founded by Lord Robert Baden Powell, will close its monthlong activities today. The scouting movement which is well integrated into our schools system had the entire of October as its month. Various activities are held in public schools and in some private schools as well. This movement that is worldwide is well established in our country and is made part of the schools’ extra-curriculum. Scouting affords boys and their gender counterparts, the opportunity for significant experiential learning that are often not taught at home and in the four corners of the classroom. It brings boys and girls to develop scouting skills that would make them better persons. It molds their character so that these young children will become upright citizens of society. They hone their undiscovered talents and skills. They discover their true self by interactions with their fellow scouts, in ways that are lively and fun. The movement teaches young individuals the basics of life’s survival which include cooking, first aid, communications skills through semaphore flag signaling, live saving, knot tying, trail signs and orienteering and many more. These skills are taught by way of friendly competi- ing and fun. Many children are able to discover their talents and skills through the activities of scouting. Apart from school encampments mostly in public schools, the scouting month went without much notice. It may be due to the apparent lack of scoutmasters who can handle the scouts in the various activities and trainings. We know too well the great gender disproportion among our teachers, the male being outnumbered in most cases, resulting in female teachers taking the cudgels for the boys. But there is apparent lack of scouting activities at the council level as people notice the absence of scouts doing community volunteer to page 5 deserving sad fate therefore now is out of sync and goes beyond the bounds of legal ethics. Why? First: He brazenly disparaged the integrity of our justice system, like saying that this verdict on him was influenced by President Aquino; short of saying that officials sitting in the impeachment court don’t have minds of their own. Second: He unreasonably scoffed at PNoy’s battle cry – “matuwid na daan” of his administration. He should realize that his appointment as Chief Justice has been dubbed by some legal sectors of the land as a midnight appointee and a clear indication of running smack into the “matuid …” battle cry, a violation of our constitution and so he rightfully deserved to be booted out. -oOoCorona has been impeached. The next step is to charge him in court employing the same strong evidences used during the impeachment trial that eventually found him guilty and therefore was thrown out of office. He should therefore, at this point in time, simply prepare his defense during the hearings in the Sandigan Bayan to be scheduled soon. -o0oHis penchant in few occasions at prejudging the case in his favor via media interactions speaks clearly of a doubtful legal “expertise” he has between his ears. However, Jose Palma, newly-installed archbishop of Cebu , chose to quietly slip below the radar screen. Instead, he asked his predecessor Vidal to complete the work . “In life as in dance,: grace glides on blistered feet”. Was it only yesterday when we watched JPII”s body interred, in a Vatican crypt? Even then, people chanted: Santo Subito (“Declare him saint ---- now!”)? Like Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the 264th successor of Peter. was swiftly beatified in May 2011. “One felt something authentically human about this smiling man who… treated the world as his parish,” wrote Melba Padilla Maggay of the Institute for Studies in Asian Church and Culture. “Yet there was, in this Pope, a rocklike intransigence, that baffles those warmed by his passion for social reform but turn cold stiff at the hardline conservatism of his theology.” JPII beatified and canonized more than the combined tally over the last five centuries. He visited 129 countries,..At the 10th World Youth Day at the Luneta , he rocked with the kids. Would JPII’s beatification occurred, if an “accidental fire” in a Pasay apartment didn’t uncover an Al-Qaeda plot to assassinate the pontiff?. On Jan. 6, 1995, firemen broke into Room 603 of Doña Josefa Apartments,. They stumbled across stockpiled chemicals for bomb-making. A computer revealed a plan to blow up 10 US airlines and kill JPII. A suicide bomber, garbed as a priest would detonate his bomb when JPII would pass on the way to the San Carlos Seminary in Makati City. In our first Christmas midnight mass at St Peter’s, Tering clutched passes from the Vatican for the family. That allowed 200, among thousands, to receive communion from John Paul II. On March 2000, JPII beatified Calungsod with 43 other martyrs. The 17-year old Filipino’s canonization comes 340 years defended his half-blind Jesuit mentor from machete attacks in Guam. And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.” Evening... led ignominious life on earth. While Christians vary in thought on the need of prayer for the dead, they could ironically be agreeing on one thing – that October 31, particularly the night before All Saints’ Day is Halloween where the pagan “fright night” tricks and gimmicks are commonly held in public places. There is practically nothing despicable in too much commercialization of the celebra- from page 4 tion of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days, especially in deference to universal right to freedom of expression and free enterprise, the people should not forget that this holy day of obligation is not meant to honor the undead or the living dead and the supernatural and other elementals in the environment, but the dead who need nothing better than prayers and remembrance. Besides that is where the word Halloween is derived – even of All Hallows (All Holy). We ask this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen. Gentle Jesus, meek and mild, never harming, always charming! Is he so? Perhaps it is the picture occasionally painted in a child’s Sunday school lesson, but it is not the exact picture of the historic Christ. Jesus threw so many hard teachings at his disciples. It is little wonder they got miffed. He once said, “If you try to save your life, it will slip through your fingers, but give it away, and you will find it.” In today’s Gospel he says, “Strive to enter by the narrow door” (Lk 13:24). What is a narrow door like? St Paul says to children: “Obey your parents” and “Honour your father and mother” (Eph 6:1). This requires on the part of the children humility and acceptance of discipline. That is children’s narrow door. He says to parents: “Do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (v.4). This requires on the part of the parents unselfish love and patience. That is their narrow door. Through such teachings, the Lord invades into our comfort zones. He tears aside the curtain of our easy-going consciences, and throws open the locked door, and if we do that, we can enter into new pastures of peace, and happiness. Going up the place, one will marvel at the aweinspiring life-size statues of the Stations of the Cross. The place also has a hermitage house run by the Franciscan Order. Devotees are drawn to St. Therese of the Child Jesus because of the miracles manifested in their lives. One of them is this year’s Hermana Mayor, businesswoman Marilou Galenzoga who credits the healing of her youngest sister Carlyne Anne from left temporal sclerosis to the intercession of St. Therese. Galenzoga has since devoted her life to the saint and has become active in civic work for which she earned The Outstanding Philippine Leadership Excellence Award in Philanthropy in 2011 given by Rotary Club of Cubao East and Philippine Jaycees Senate. The shrine in Calubian itself has witnessed some miracles, one of which is the apparition of the Blessed Virgin in a photograph. A photographer took a photo of Calubian Bay on top of the New Way of the Cross in Aug. 17, 2008. An image of the Blessed Virgin appeared on the photo which inspired the erection of an image of Our Lady of Fatima near the spot where the photographer stood. Another miracle happened on the night of Oct. 10, 2009 when workers rushed to finish the expansion of the chapel to be used the following day for an important occasion. Work was snagged because the scissors for cutting galvanized steel was misplaced. The situation seemed hopeless when a dog approached the workers with a pair of ordinary scissors on his mouth. Somehow the workers managed to make do with the tool and finish the work on time. Naval State University President Edita Genzon who was the Hermana Mayor that time framed the miraculous scissors which is now displayed on her office wall. The Church teaches that the Lord works in unexpected ways, unimaginable circumstances and unlikely places. In this case, St. Therese has chosen the humble town of Calubian to pour her blessings and highlight to her devotees the virtue of meekness. (Felix N. Codilla III) Leyte Samar Daily Express 7 St. Therese... from page 1 modernity. And this is being said without any hint of mockery considering its charm actually lies on that nostalgic feel of the golden years. An eatery named Dood’s Carinderia retains its crude interiors including the wall-painted liquor advertisements from 60 years ago. All the post-war buildings in the town center have not been altered and are in even in a state of near neglect, including the dilapidated wooden municipal hall and the rundown fire station complemented by a vintage fire truck. The town seems to have run in a standstill. Thanks to the St. Therese Diocesan Shrine, Calubian comes to life for two days as devotees flock here. The celebration this year began last Oct. 26 with a fluvial procession starting past 2:00 pm at the town port. A motorized boat carrying the patron saint’s image led the flotilla of more than 10 vessels in sailing the calm Calubian Bay. The lead boat carried this year’s Hermano Mayor Dr. Marlo Maamo who is running next year for congressman in Cebu’s northern district and Hermana Mayor Marilou Galenzoga. They were joined by Mayor Jose Emery F. Roble of Hilongos, Leyte who chairs the fiesta executive committee. The boats traveled about five nautical miles for 40 minutes and docked at Lotus Beach in Brgy. Abanilla to unload the image and passengers. The image was then loaded at the back of a Mitsubishi Strada pickup for a land procession back to the shrine in Brgy. Obispo more than a kilometer away. Petilla said he would probably take his oath as the new DoE secretary on or before Nov. 5 after President Benigno S.C. Aquino III officially issues his appointment papers within the week. Petilla admitted he will have to study carefully his new job but said he will prioritize the rising oil products prices and issues in the energy sector. “The first thing is to asses who are the players. They’re only three of them—those in the power generation, transmission and distribution. Along that line is a multi-sectoral environment where there are several problems that need to be addressed. That in itself is already a lot of work, so I really have to examine the energy sector and that goes the same with the fuel prices,” Petilla said. The governor added he also needs to be acquainted with the 20-year Philippine Energy Plan that outlines the government’s programs of the energy sector to fuel news support for economic growth. Petilla’s appointment as the new Energy secretary was confirmed by the President during his state visit to Australia last week. Meanwhile, Petilla said he will formally turn over the affairs of the province of Leyte to Vice-Governor Ma. Mimmietta S. Bagulaya as soon as he assumed his new post. “I fully trust the vicegovernor that she can manage the affairs of the province. I have been working with her for more than eight years and I have not seen any problems especially on how she handles the legislative branch of the province,” Petilla said. “I don’t think there will be changes at all. She will be there for seven months and her job is basically to continue the programs and projects that I have started. But it is up to her to start new projects, but I think seven months is too short already,” he added. Petilla, who is now serving his third and last consecutive term, chose not to run for an elective post in the May 2013 elections despite rumors he was eyeing a congressional seat. Petilla currently heads the Eastern Visayas Regional Development Council (RDC) and the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC). Before his entrance to local politics, Petilla taught a number of years Wednesday, 31 October 2012 Icot says... from page 1 not re-invent the wheel. I will have to continue what has been started by my predecessor,” Gov. Petilla told Leyte Samar Daily Express shortly before leaving for the United Kingdom for a personal trip. Petilla said that he would also review the 20-year energy plan of the department. “Seriously, before I do anything we should review the organizational structure first and then the budget of all the attached agencies then be updated with pressing issues and finally review the 20 year energy plan,” he said. The so-called Philippine Energy Plan(PEP), covers the years 2012 to 2030, which is to be formally launched December, this year in time for the annual celebration of the National Energy Consciousness Month. Based on a press statement issued by the DOE, the Energy Plan highlights the policy vision of an economy which will become largely decarbonized with the development and utilization of renewable energy – hydro, geothermal, solar, wind, biomass and ocean energy and with DOE taking the lead in promoting energy efficiency as a lifestyle, and advocating the use of alternative fuels for the transport sector. Meantime, the appointment of his son to the Cabinet was forthcoming now that he was to bow out from local politics, Leopoldo Petilla, father of the governor, said. In fact, even before the 2010 elections, his son was already being considered for a possible Cabinet post. “The President has long been wanting Jericho to join his Cabinet,” the elder Petilla said. He even revealed that he and his son together with the President and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas had a closed door meeting. “They were thinking of two-terms presidency. That Noynoy will win and Mar(in the 2016 elections). This early, they wanted to determine whom they want us to occupy high posiitons on the governemnt during the two-terms presidency and one of them was Jericho,” the former governor said. Gov. Petilla is now serving out his third and last term as governor of Leyte. With him leaving his office before June 30,2013, Vice Governor Bagulaya is set to become the acting governor with senior Board Member Florante Cayunda Jr.as the acting vice governor.
