In-house Journal of L&T ConstructionJan - Mar 2013 • Volume-36 • Issue-1 Focus This issue of Concord takes you to a village near Gulbarga in the state of Karnataka which has now earned the status of becoming a significant landmark on the cement manufacturer’s map of India. L&T has recently commissioned Vicat Sagar, a 7500 TPD cement plant which is one of the largest plants of this region. Many innovative construction methodologies were employed to construct this state-of-the-art plant, which is described in detail. L&T is in the process of completing one of the major Interchange projects in UAE which is known as Shiekh Khalifa Interchange. This project involves the construction ofan interchange comprising of four bridges, a vehicular tunnel and related infrastructure including utilities. Once completed, the interchange will handle more than 9000 vehicles per hour which is already the traffic density of this most significant interchange that connects Abu Dhabi and Dubai. PT&D has done a very unique substation project for an island located close to Abu Dhabi. The client,Tourism Investment and Development Company’s (TDIC) vision to develop this island into a resort which will house many desert flora and fauna as wildlife tourism attraction, is turning into a reality, as L&T is working on providing power supply to Sir Bani Yas Island from the existing ADWEA network on the Abu Dhabi Mainland by establishing a new 132/11kV substation. From the Solar business, there is an interesting story where L&T has recently commissioned a 20 MW Solar photo voltaic power plant for Kiran Energy in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan. This issue also has its share of coverage on the corporate news of L&T in the Kaleidoscope section. This quaint town has become a landmark in the map of India for being an integral part and fuelling the infrastructural progress of the country. With over 1500 acres of abundant limestone reserves which are available here, many cement manufacturers are setting up cement plants with enhanced production capacities to meet with the growing demands of the market. Apart from availability of raw materials, this town is wellconnected with important cities such as Hyderabad, Gulbarga and also Mumbai through an excellent network of roadways and railways. One of the major plants that has recently been built in this region C is the 7500 TPD cement plant by the Vicat Sagar Cement Private Limited, (VSCPL), a joint venture between the Vicat Group of France and Sagar Cements Limited of The 80m boom length of crane also enabled erection of adjacent structures like ducting complex, blending silo roof structures, Coal Mill and Kiln auxiliary drives, which were all congested due to paucity of space. India. Both these groups are among the major producers of cement in India and France. Vicat group which forms the major shareholder of this JV is operating in over 11 countries with about 15 cement manufacturing plants and 5 grinding centres across the world. Sagar Cements is a prominent player in the field of cement in Andhra Pradesh for the past 25 years, adopting progressive manufacturing practices with increased capacity to 2.35 MTPA from 66000 TPA. Challenges faced The elevation of the preheater was 165m. The 80m boom length of crane also enabled erection of adjacent structures like ducting complex. This challenge was avoided by using 25 t capacity heavy duty tower crane that helped in the erection of parts in the assembled condition. The foundations were at a depth of 14. A construction challenge was faced during the execution of wagon tippler foundation works. which was black clayey soil that made vehicular movement very difficult. Since the conveyance from Tandur to project site was not convenient due to bad road conditions. the project team faced difficulties in transportation of staff from nearest town where accommodation was provided. L&T took up the matter with the Road Transport ECC CONCORD Jan . This challenge was overcome by requesting the client to construct temporary staff quarters which enabled the shifting of staff closer to the site during the peak progress of the project. An alternative route was taken and the commute of staff commenced as early as 5.00 am travelling through a circuitous route of more than 30 kms in order to reach the site. The area also witnessed certain local disturbances during agitations over separate Telangana demands. it fell under Central Wages act with less basic wages when compared to that of Andhra Pradesh. Transportation of three 40 MVA power transformers from mainland to island by barge faced a lot of challenges. The team had to wait for high tide in the sea in order to get the barge in floating position while loading and unloading this large consignment. Logistical challenges The power transformers were oversized and due to the heavy weight of the main tank. In order to avoid escalation of cost. Well point dewatering system was adopted to dispose ground water during construction. the significance of the Environment Impact assessment was carried out by TDIC’s Environment specialist on a monthly basis throughout the duration of the project. Arranging accommodation for the workmen and staff was one of the biggest challenges as no contractor was allowed to run their own kitchen facilities due to ADFCA’s stringent rules and regulation. Sand storms accompanied with heavy winds were one of the frequent issues that stopped the construction activities and the barge movement. The project team was dependent on TDIC accommodation during the peak construction time. L&T had to hire a larger barge of suitable capacity from private parties for this purpose. The harsh and humid climatic conditions also resulted in many workmen falling ill frequently and they had to be taken to mainland for hospitals.
