Usually Mum would reply, urging me to take my bath, eat and then do my school work. But, this day – March 14 1961- there was silence. I walked into the bedroom the entire family shared. Mum was sitting at her dressing table, tears streaming down her cheeks. She looked up and said, “your sister died this morning,” I just stood there, not knowing what to say. I was ten years old and the concept of death had no real meaning then. I was trying to make sense of the situation when I found Elizabeth’s school bag sitting on a small table in the corner of the bedroom. It looked as if it was waiting to be claimed by its owner. I moved my hands slowly across the top of the bag, trying to sense my sister’s presence. I opened it. Everything was neatly arranged – exercise books on one side, textbooks on the other and her pencil case in between. There was also the black headband she wore to school that morning. I took out some of her exercise books. As I turned the pages, I could see a few “Good” and “Very Good”. However, it was clear that Mathematics was her weakest subject. There was also an English textbook, First Aid, with a dark, blue ink stain which I had accidentally spilled. I carefully returned her books into her bag and wondered if Sis would be upset that I had gone through her possessions. That evening I stood on the balcony, watching every bus that pulled up at the bus stop. I was hoping to see her appear from a bus, any bus, but to no avail. “Is she coming back?” “Why can’t she come back? Why did she have to die?” Mum could either offer comfort or any meaningful answers to my ceaseless queries. At about 9 o’clock that evening, a black butterfly flew into the kitchen, fluttered around the hall and landed high on the wall. “Don’t chase it away,” Mum said. When I turned in for the night, the butterfly was perched in the same place, but the next morning it was gone. Only then did I remember what had happened two days previously. That evening-Sis was in a hurry to finish an art project that was due the next day. Right after her bath and dinner, Sis sat down at our round dining table and started on her painting. She divided a rectangular piece of drawing paper into twelve equal boxes. In each box, she painted the same butterfly in a bold black outline. Each butterfly had curly antennae and triangular wings with slanting lines and dots. She allowed me to help colour in the background of each box. Now, the day after Sis’s death, I remembered that the butterfly that had flown into our flat looked a lot like the ones in her painting. Normally, I was still asleep when Sis left for school. I woke up at 5.30. I walked out to find her rushing around getting ready for school. That morning, she didn’t have time to finish her breakfast. I held the door open for her so that the light from the flat could help her see her way down the stairwell. It was about six o’clock when she left. “Bye. Brother”, she called as she turned to go. I had no idea this would be the last things she would ever say to me. I believe the butterfly was actually Sis returning to pay us a visit before moving on to the next life. Answer all questions. It has brought about entertainment, education and communication. Indeed mankind should be grateful to its inventor J.L Baird who has brought the cinema and stage into the houses of the masses. One can now watch moving, talking and living pictures on the screen while sitting in one’s home. Thus, while sitting in our home, we can watch all kinds of programmes which we think informative, entertaining and educating. However, aside of its advantages do we aware of its drawback? Assalamualaikum wbt and a very good morning to the wise and honourable judges, the accurate time keepers and members of the floor. I am ………………………… I stand here today with the purpose of talking about one of the most popular topics among us that is “ Does Television Have a Negative Influence on Society?” Ladies and gentlemen, This question has been debated for decades. During that time some 2,500 books and articles have been written on the effects of television on human life and behavior. Does television has a negative influence on society ? The answer is “Yes!” At risk categories are kids and elderly people. Studies show that the average Malaysian kid spend more time watching TV than attending school. Kids eat while watching TV, and they may do the same while doing homework. Elderly people watch TV even more than kids, since this is their main entertainment at home. Fellow listeners…TV is inherent in our lives. It is natural for a person to enter a house, switch on the light, then switch on the TV, and then keep on doing other things. The problem is not with watching – the problem is with watching what ? Breeding violence ? Aggression through horror film or being fooled by silly talk shows of many kind? TV is becoming one of our main leisure activities, a source of ready-made stereotypes and new myths, a passive view of the world thrust on us from the angle of the camera that may distort the reality out of recognition. We like TV and hate it because we are addicted to it. What else about this magnificent invention? TV is powerful because it is politically oriented. It establishes public standards. It denies alternative thinking. It only stimulates a variety of opinions, hiding back the ideology of mass conformism. Watching too much TV dehumanizes you, weakens your little gray cells, and makes you critical and reflective thinking abortive. Have you ever been internally protected from watching the idiot box too much ? Have you tried to balance TV and other entertainment alternatives? TV has harmful influences on us because it is mainly a passive activity. Lying on a sofa, peeping from behind a cushion, snoring at the peak of an interesting program, we stimulate activity, hearing without listening to, being entertained as if we were programmed and tuned. Too much of TV stupefying. Too much of TV is staying away from the process of living. Too much of TV is getting used to readymade opinions, to stereotyped prejudices, to mediocrity, to mass production that dehumanizes you! Don’t let your life become an Indonesian soap opera! Members of the floor, There is no chance to escape from the influence of television. But there is a chance to reduce negative influences of TV by selecting high quality programmes and limiting time watching TV. Find other alternative. Keep on a TV diet on Oprah’s show and National Geographic channel but stay away from advertisements, simply living your room to do the washing , to water the flowers, to brush your teeth. TV does not have a negative impact on our society. It is a powerful source of information and a huge industry of entertainment that is inherent in our lives. Like anything, it is good when it is balanced with other leisure pursuits. With this I rest my case and thank you for listening to my speech. It is available online from www.netlearnpublications.com . OBJECTIVES To provide the preparatory work necessary to facilitate the writing of formal letters. An ordering activity will be used to present the recommended lay-out of such letters. A "Spot the Mistakes" exercise will be used to focus on common errors and a relatively easy Questionnaire will be set in which success should be assured to help promote positive self-esteem. ACTIVITIES The lesson consists of three stages that are outlined below: 1) An ordering activity for group work with cards: Each group will be given a set of cards to order and I will circulate during the activity to provide any assistance required. This caters for the Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence Type – for those of us who learn through movement. The correct version will then be displayed on the OHP. Timing 15 minutes 2) Find the deliberate mistakes for pair work: To vary the forms of interaction, this time the learners will be asked to work on the activity in pairs and photocopies will be provided. The correct answers will then be elicited, making use of the OHP once again. Timing 20 minutes 3) A Questionnaire through which the learner can find out how much they know about letter writing: The students can work on this individually and photocopies will be provided for this purpose. The incentive of a fabulous mystery prize will be offered as a carrot for the winner!
