She was the wife of Niranjana who was also a renowned writer. She is prominent among the popular kannada novel writers. She was able to effectively capture the problems and passions of women in her writings. She born in Theerthahalli and her birth name was Venkatalakshmi. Being MBBS graduate she was doctor by profession. During her medical studentship, she started writing with her pen name Anupama. Her first published story book was Kanmani in 1952. As a medical doctor she has discharged her duties in Dharwad and Bangalore. She has been able to effectively write her expericnces in career. 9 story compositions, 22 novels and many more books are her contributions to kannada literary world. Her very popular and widely discussed novels are Ghosha, Kolache kompeya daanigalu, Ala, Ele, Noolu neyda chitra, shvetaambari, Snehapallavi,Seve, Odalu, Madhavi etc., Her novel Runa was made a movie by name RunamukataLu (directed by Puttanna Kanagal). Nenapu sihi sihi is her autobiography. For her book Arogya darshana, Sahitya academy has conferred special scientific book award. Also she has got Rajyotsava award, Soviet Land nehru Award, Nanjangud Tirumalamba award. She was active in movements for women liberation and she chaired Kasargod Mahila Sammelan during 1977. She was the chairperson of Mumbai Kannada Sahitya Sammelan held in 1979. Though she was suffering from Cancer, she was courageous about life and continued her writing and was a guiding spirit and role model for all. CHANDRASHEKARA KAMBARA He born in the year 1938 in a village called Ghoatageri in Belgaum District. Kambara is well known as a laureate in folk arts. Moreover he is a poet, novelist, stage-show director, Film Director and musician. But his contribution to the field of Folk arts is commendable. He has worked as Lecturer in Chicago University of America for some time by securing Fulbright fellowship in the year 1968. He has presented valuable research papers in the symposiums held in Chicago and Indian Universities. Kambarta's prime base is Folklore and this can be seen in his book "HELATENAKELA." His collection of poems are Savirada Neralu, Helatena kela,Belli menu. His novels are Karimaayi, Singarevva mattu aramane, GK Mastarara praNava prasanga. As a stage-play writer he has enriched this field of literature by writing Angi myalangi, Harakeya kuri, Jaisiddha Naika, Nayikathe, Kadukudure, Sirisampige, Pushparani, Thukrana kanasu etc., Chakori is great work in poetry. It is his contribution to folklore wherein he has given the touch of poetry through his literal creations. He has instilled some thought into this aspect. He has involved himself actively in various revolutionary activities and social establishments such as Karnataka Writers and Artiste's organization, JP Revolution, Bandaya activity, Gokak movement and such other development oriented movements and activities. He stepped into Kannada literary world with his composition of poems named Banuli. Thereafter he wrote Madhyabindu, Hattombattu kavnagaLu, O enna dEshabandhavare, (1977) Hoove Hannu tare (1982) Ardhasatyada hudugi (1989) Gundammana Hadu (1998) Shalmala nanna Shalmala (1994) which have become very popular in the poetic field of literature. Appa, Tingara Buddanna, Kunta Kunta Kuravatti, KodegaLu are the stage plays which were widely accepted by the public. His street plays named Jagadambe Beedi Nataka, Nalakaviya mastakabhisheka, Buradi babana lakshaapaharana prasanga have become popar. During emergency imposed by Smt.Indira Gandhi, Patil was the only person from literary world who opposed it and jailed. He has recorded his experience in the book "26 dina 25 raatri". DR.U.R.ANANTHAMOORTHI Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy ( born December 21, 1932) is a significant Kannada writer who is also a well known thinker of our times. He is one among the torch bearers of Modern Kannada literature. He hails from Melige of Thirthahalli taluk in Shimoga district. He completed his higher studies in Britain and was a meritorious student during his school time. He started his career as English professor in Mysore University and later he extensively travelled world over and was a professor in many universities abroad. He has worked as ViceChancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University of Kottayam in Kerala, Chairman of National Book Trust of India, President of Kendra Sahitya Academy, Chairman of Film and Television Institute of India. Thus he has worked in a number of high profile institutions and his work performance is praised all over. Some of honors conferred on him include Jnanapeetha award, Padmabhoshana, Rajyotsava award, Masti Award. His story compositions include Endendu mugiyada kathe, Mouni, Prashne, Clip joint, Ghatashraaddha, Akasha mattu bekku. All his stories are compiled in one big edition named as Stories of 5 decades. His novels include Samskaara, Bharatipura, Avasthe, Bhava and Divya. The literary magazine Rujuvaatu compiled by Anantamoorthy was a platform for serious and useful discussion of literary aspects. GANGADHARA CHITTALA Chittala born in a village called Hanehalli near Gokarna in Uttara Kannada district on October 17, 1923. He studied in Hanehalli, Kumta, Dharwad, Mumbai and started career as Asst.Accounts General. He worked in various capacities and visited various countries and retired as Director of Audits in London. He has written only 4 books which are compositions of his poems and they have been very popular among poem lovers. His poems emanate from the intrinsic experiences of his life. He was of the opinion that his poems are not different from his life and they have inter-relations which reciprocate to each other. He was a strong believer of this opinion and remained in poetic field for about 30 years. His four books are Kaladakere, Munukulada Hada, Hariva neeridu and Samparka. His poems have greater influence of his experience in the life, love towards life, personality, wishes and frustrations, political events etc., His poetic sense was really immense and unique in nature. He lived in the way he written and in the modern kannada literary era his contribution is worth reckoning. He died of Parkinson disease in the year 1987. GIRADDI GOVINDARAJA Identified as a criticist in the era of modern Kannada literary movement Mr.Giraddi born on 4-1-1939 in Abbigeri of Dharwad district. He completed his primary and middle schooling in Sirigalla and secured masters both Kannada and English. After completing diploma in English he went to Lankster (United Kingdom) for pursuing higher education in linguistic science. Having been extensively toured in Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany etc., he has attained good knowledge and got indepth knowledge in Stage-plays. As a result he formed a Drama troupe named Ranga Madhyama" in Gulbarga. He has penned various books comprised in poems, short stories, critics, editorial works and there are 10 books to his credit. His books include "A mukha E mukha" composition of short stories, "Mannu" Sharada lahari, Rasavanti (composition of poems). Sankramana kavyada sampadaka, Sannakatheya hosa olavugaLu, janapada kavya, nataka, vastu mattu tantra (novel) navya vimarshe and latest one Satatya are unique in nature. Giraddi Govindaraju is an eminent critic in kannada literary world. His study, research and thoughtful writings have been widely accepted. His recent book "Satatya" is a coveted contribution to the field of critic writing in Kannada. His short story "Hangu" was picturized by Puttanna Kanagal in his movie "Katha sangama". GORUR RAMASWAMY IYENGAR Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar(1904-1991) is known for his versatile writing in which he instills passion for life. He was a Gandhian too. His writings flourish in various spheres such as Stories, novels, essays, Life sketches, writings on his tours etc., He was born in Gorur in Hassan district. During his highschool days he jumped into non-co-operative movement called by Gandhi and became his follower. Later he joined Vidyaapeetha of Gujarat and later he worked as sub editor for Lokamitra kannada magazine which was published from Madras. Also he worked as journalist to Andhrapatrike and Bharati. He was active in uplifting the lifestyle of dalits and downtrodden for which he joined Gurukula Ashram in Kengeri. He was the convenor of All India Charak Sangh in Bangalore. He returned to Gorur in 1933 and started Mysore Grama seva sangha and tried to follow the Gandhian philosophy. He strived for rural industrial revolution. Mysore University conferred Honorary D.Lit on him and he was the President of All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan held in Sirsi during 1982. K.V.IYER K.V.Iyer (1900-1980) is a special writer in Kannada. He was known for his Iyer Gymnasium in Bangalore. He was Gym coach and has moulded the body and health concepts of many youths through his Gymnastic center in Bangalore. During 1930s his photos with six pack body shape were published in magazines of America and England. He was a vegetarian and had great initiative towards spiritual concepts. He was a writer also. He had close proximity to a number of renowned writers of his time. Iyer attracted the consideration of readers through his novels. His novels Shantala and Roopadarshi are everlasting testimonies of his writing skills. Shantala is a novel based on the historic aspect of Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana's princess Shantala. His writing style was very attractive. Roopadarshi is another example for his great writing skills. It deals with the transformation of life of a artist in his life. KEERTHINATHA KURTAKOTI Born on 13-10-1928 in Gadag, Mr.Kurtakoti got his M.A. in English and started career as Lecturer. He was a versatile stageplay writer, editor and critic. "Amani" is his stage-play. Svapnadarshi is poetic drama. His Critic write-ups are Yugadharma and Sahitya darshana, Navya kavya prayoga. The books compiled by him include Nadedu banda dari and Vasudeva prashasti. He has got Mysore State and Rajya sahitya academy awards. KUM VEERABHADRAPPA Kumbara Veerabhadrappa,(October 1, 1953) well known with his short name KUMVEE in kannada literary world, hails from Kottur in Bellary District. Though he is a post graduate in Arts, he chosen to teach primary school children and has found contentment in what he did. Now he is retired from service and is a full time writer. The sphere of his writing skills is very vast, He has written stories, novels, poems and biographical sketches. His composition of poems include Divi seemeya haadu, Neenillada mane. He got his masters degree and Ph.D., from Mysore University and started career as lecturer. He has written a number of books in Kannada working as Critic, Researcher and Linguistic master in kannada literary world. His research based books are "Kannada shasanagaLa saamskrutika adhyayana". This was his thesis in Ph.D. Saamshodhane and Sanshodhana Taranga are his other books. His one more critic book is "Basavannanavaru". M.GOPALAKRISHNA ADIGA Mogeri Gopalakrishna Adiga (1918-1992) is a prominent writer who developed modern kannada literature. He was a inspirational personality who transformed a platform for modern Kannada literature and brought kannada sahitya to the forefront. He was active in translation, critical work, stories, novels and thought provoking articles. But his talent in poetic writings was exemplary. His very popular poetic creations are Bhavataranga, Kattuvevu naavu, Nadedu banda daari, Chandemaddale, Bhoomigeetha, Vardhamana, Battalaarada gange, idannu bayasiralilla, Mulaka mahaashayaru, Chintamaniyalli kanda mukha and suvarna putthali. All the poems written by him seven decades of his life have been brought out in the name Samagra Kavya. His novels are Anaatha and Aakaashadeepa. His autobiography was named Nenapina Ganiyalli. The magazine Saakshi for which Adiga was the Editor is reckoned as one among the magazines which instilled great spirit to Kannada literature. He has worked as Highschool teacher, English Lecturer, Reader, Professor and Principal of colleges in his career and later he has worked as Deputy Director of National Book Trust. He was a well known thinker and had his foot prints in politics as well. He had contested for Loksabha and Vidhanasabha elections as a candidate from Janasangha but failed to win. M.K.INDIRA Though she started her writing career in her age of 45 years, M.K.Indira (1917-1994) is a name to reckon with in Kannada literary world.. Her full name is Mandagadde Krishnarao Indira. Tirthahalli was her birth place. She married in the age of 12 years and became grandmother in her age of 44 and thereafter only she started writing. She has written 22 novels, fifteen small story composition books. Tungabhadra was her first novel. Sadananda, Gejjepooje and Navaratna are her other popular novels. M.M.KALBURGI Born on 28-11-1938 at Gubbevada, his full name is Mallappa Madivalappa Kalaburgi. He got his MA and Ph.D., from Karnataka University and started career as Kannada Lecturer in the very same university. He is a researcher and editor and his work in the field of research is considerable. He has written more than 20 valuable books. His popular books include Shasana sampada, Shasanagalalli shivasharaNaru, Shasana vyasanga which are known as research works. Other research works include Kavirajamarga parisaradakannada sahitya (thesis for Ph.D) Mallinatha purana sangraha, shabdamanidarpana sangraha, sampadana krutigaLu. And marga-2 volumes. His research and findings about channabasavanna became controversial in the eyes of fundamentalists and they tried to ban this book. He is known for scientific research having been worked as Chief Editor of Samagra vachana sahitya series. He is working in a rare field which is not familiar to many and his creativity is well acclaimed. He got State Sahitya academy award for his book Shasanagalalli shivasharanaru. Also he has bagged Jayachamaraja Odeyar award and many other laurels. Presently he is working as Chancellor of Hampi Kannada University. NAA.DSOUZA Naa Dsouza hails from Sagar (June 6,1937) and he is a versatile writer in Kannada. He is one among popular novelists. He had the influence of Shivarama Karanth in his writings. His novels were mainly based on the instances happening around Western ghat locales, and apart from this he was active in uniting social movements. In his stories and novels we can see the transformation of lifestyle in Malnad and western ghat region. His first novel "Banjebenki" was published in 1964. He has written more than 50 novels. Swarna Kamala award was conferred on the movie directed by Girish Kasaravalli based on the novel Dweepa written by Dsouza. POORNACHANDRA TEJASVI Born in the year 1938, he hails from a village named Kuppalli in Shimoga District. From the time of neo-modern literature and passing through rebellion regime of Kannada Literary world, he has grown up amidst industrial revolutions, social inequalities, revolts and many more events of contemporary world. Having been a part of all these experience, it has been possible for him to mould himself as a unique writer. His writings are the testimony of all his experiences and one can see the in-depth and multi-faceted qualities in them. His stories and stage-plays cover the real life events happening around us, and he has given stress on the superstition, harassments, revolts in the guise of decency etc. It is quite interesting to note that realistic developments in ecology and civilization, inhibited virtues of human behavior, relationship between society and people as a whole, superstition, philosophical thinking etc., take active part in his writings. He was a self-made artist and was well-versed in carving computer graphic arts. SAARA ABOOBAKAR Saara born on 30-6-1936) in a village called Chamanadu aside Chandragiri River in Kasargod district. She is a special Kannada writer who introduced the problems and passions of muslim ladies. She belongs to a traditional muslim family and her education was discontinued after SSLC. Soon she was given in marriage but her thirst for reading and writing was active within her. She was reading books in public libraries. Her husband Abubakar was co-operative to her and he encouraged her to write. Her first novel Chandragiriya teeradalli was published in 1948. Her other popular novels are Sahana, Tala odeada donigalu, vajragalu, sulige sikkavaru, kadana viraama. Composition of stories are Chappaligalu, Payana mattu itare kathegalu, ardharaatriyallia hottida koosu, khedda. She is best in translation too and has translated many a books from Malayalam to Kannada. Her travelogue on her America tour "Aisharamada Aladalli has been a popular one. SHANTINATHA DESAI Shanthinatha K.Desai hails from Havagi village in Haliyala Taluk of Karwar District, who is a novelist, story-writer and a renowned critic. His Story compositions include Manjugadde, Kshitija, Danda, Raakshasa, Parivartana, and his novels are mukti, Vikshepa, Srushti, Beeja, Sambandha, AntaraaLa. He is one among the prominent writers of modern era of Kannada literature. Eventhough he has not written poems, his prose has poetic virtues. In the field of critic literature he has done a lot of work and was known for straight forward criticism on any form of literary work. He popularized the Value definition of I.A.Richards, in Kannada language. He worked as Vice Chancellor of Kuvempu University during its inception (1989) and proved himself to be a good administrator, for which he was praised by one and all. In the critic field he has written "Sahitya mattu Bhaashe" "Gangaadhara chittalara kaavya srushti", " Kannada kadambari nadedu banda daari" "Premachand(translation) "sambandha"(he edited this book) likewise, he has contributed with versatality in various fields of Kannada literature apart from which he has written English books throwing light on the literary work of Shantharam rao and Ananthamurthy. He paved way for literature based on dulits and downtrodden in Kannada, and his novel Chomana Dudi brought him name and fame. It was transformed into a movie and bagged national award too. He started a model school named BALAVANA and he was running a newspaper named Vasantha, for some time. For his novel Mookajjiya kanasugaLu he has been conferred with prestigious Jnanapeetha award. SHRI KRISHNA ALANAHALLI Born in Heggadadevana kote taluk on 3-4-1947. Giving around 11 books to Kannada literary field he died of heart attack in his middle age. He was a good poet, story writer and novelist. Eventhough the number of his books are view, they have brought him name and fame, and also awards and recognitions. His name has become popular in literary world. His books Mannina haadu, Kadugidada haadu paadu are well acclaimed. Parasangada gendetimma, Bhujangayyana dashavataara are his popular novels. Gramanaya sameekshe, avalokana, antakarana, are collection of writings. His story compositions include, Tapta, Phoenix, Geejaganagoodu. His translation work is Dogra Pahadi Prema geetegaLu. She has many facets in her personality and being life partner of Infosys founder N.R.Narayana Murthy, she is active in social reforms too. An Engineer by profession holding BE and M.Tech to her credit, Sudha was the first woman engineer to get employment in T elco ( Now tata motors). Infosys was founded with the initial capital of Rs.10000/- which was her savings. She is the guiding spirit of Infosys Foundation. She is active in providing computers to govt. schools as also arranging libraries through Infosys foundation. She died at the age of 35 , due to bronchitis which was there since her child hood. USHA NAVARATNARAM Usha Navaratnaram (1941-2000) is one among the popular novelists in Kannada. Usha is in the forefront having penned a number of novels based on the problems and miseries of middle class generation and on youth oriented subjects. She hails from Srirangapatna. Her father B.Narasinga Rao was Advocate by profession, who was conferred with Rajasevasakta award from Nalvadi Krishnaraja Odeyar. Vani got married in her early age of ten and she was a meritorius student who was able to complete SSLC in the early decade of the century. Renowned writer B. M.Sreekantaiah, who is known as Kannadada Kanva, happens to be a close relative of Vani. Popular novelists, Triveni and Aryambha pattaabhi are also her close relatives. Kasturi, a composition of stories published in 1944, was her first book. She has written 19 novels, six story compositions, six stage shows. He joined as Steno in a company called Caltex and with promotions he became a senior officer of that companys. After retirement he came to Bangalore. He has used his pen to write stories, novels, critical write-ups., stage plays, travelogues etc., His novels were mostly based on the mechanical life of Mumbai city, problems faced by middle class community and labour class people of Mumbai. He had the opportunity to chair the Madras Kannadigas Sammelan in 1988. YASHAVANTHA CHITTALA Yashavanta Chittala hails from Hanehalli village of Gokarna taluk in Uttara Kannada District. Though Konkani is his mother tongue, but he has immensely contributed to Kannada Literature. Great influence of writers such as Gangadhara Chittala, Gourish Kaykini, Shanthinatha Desai, can be seen in his writings. He stands in a prominent place among writers of neomodern era of kannada literature. Main aspects focussed in his writings were mechanical life of Mumbai city, aloofness, thurst for money, introvert nature, sense of indigency. Chittala's strength of writing can be seen in elaborating the introvert nature and sense of aloofness of an intellectual person."Sandarshana"(1957), Ata(1969) Katheyaada hudugi (1980) Benya (1983) are his collection of select stories. In his Book Sandarshana, he has crafted light humour with a blend of belongingness between souls. In the peaktime of neo-modern literary era, his book "ATA" was published, in which he has presented pains of life, and has artistically carved the texture of finding solutions for the helplessness and dissatisfaction over life. His books Katheyaadalu Hudugi, Benya and Siddartha throw light on problems in contemporary world in an artistic way. His novels include Mooru Daarigalu (1968) Shikari (1979) Cheda (1985) and Purushottama (1990). His novel "Moorudaarigalu" explicitly shows love and trepidation on the problems faced in one's life.
