Jawahar kala kendraCase study Jawahar kala kendra is a multi arts centre located in Jaipur . It was built by rajasthan government with the purpose of preserving rajasthani arts and crafts. Charles correa Year of completion : 1991 Feasibility: The site is 6 km from railway station 6.4 km from airport 5.7 km from hospital Concept :The plan of jawahar kala Kendra is a reflection of the original city plan of jaipur, which is based on the concept of nine Mandalas or navagraha placed in a grid pattern with one block displaced to accommodate the main entrance. The astrological symbol of each planet is directly expressed in a cut-out opening on its external wall. Nine Mandalas Representation of these nine blocks as the nine planets.For instance library in Jupiter section which represents wisdom and knowledge.TheMars section representative of power has the administrative block. Conceptual section A A .OPEN AIR THEATRE The central amphitheatre has a square plan with a circular stage in the centre offering a three sixty degree view of the audience to the performer . The entire space has a very casual and relaxed feel to it. Madhyavarti – an open air theatre designed after a traditional Rajasthan step well where steps are used for sittings. LIBRARY The library is located in the Jupiter section. The Library offers membership to students. The visitors are welcomed into the building though the hall topped with dome which is decorated. Pergolas and fenestrations in the walls create dramatic effects of sunlight. It also hosts colourful dance and music al performances throughout the year which attracts a huge number of visitors .SHILPGRAM COMPLEX Adjoining the main building of the Kendra is SHILPGRAM –a rural complex symbolizing the rural ambience of various regions of Rajasthan. They display and sell their crafts in these replicas of the indigenous rural houses of different regions. North . canteen dome library paintings workshop . INFERENCES •The building is a contemporary metaphorical replication of the basic plan of city of Jaipur. •Direct entry to Library . .Auditorium .based on the vastu pursh mandala.shadows and colours. •The landscaping was also done as per planets astrological values in the whole complex. •High walls with no fenestration in the facade makes the building enclosed and does not open up to the city. •The place has an amazing interplay of light . •The open air theatre is enclosed by the 8m high walls which create acoustic problem at the time of crowd. •In pergolas of library section .spanning between the beams was designed and kept such that the local materials available like wooden bamboo sticks could be used to complete the entire space frame. •Parking space is insufficient at the time of festival hosted by the Kendra.Adminstation. in each square wherever required. •Local materials such as red sand stone and marble are used in abundance. evoking emotions in the user and invite him to move further.
