Some controllers require different interface protocols. The Ei has 3 different modes depending on which controller it will be connected to. The default is set to Jandy L/M. To change: turn the Ei OFF, then press and hold the OUTPUT button for ~6 seconds. The controller setting will appear on the display. Continue holding the OUTPUT button until the desired controller setting is displayed on the screen. Release the OUTPUT button. The Ei is now ready to be wired to the controller. IMPORTANT: The comm link should not be made until the correct controller has been set on the Ei If connecting to a AquaLink RS or PDA follow wiring diagram carefully. A grommet may be necessary depending on the size of the cable being used To reduce strain on the cable, attach a cable tie to the communication cable as shown. Test the Connection To insure the controller and Ei are communicating, test the connection by; 1. Turning on power to the controller and the Ei. 2. If communication is successful a ‘T’ will appear in the upper right hand corner of the display screen for approximately 20 seconds. 3. If the controller does not connect, turn off power to both systems and try again. 4. If the controller still will not connect, recheck all wiring connections and the controller setting on the Ei. . Note: For safety reasons the Zodiac Ei reverts to the OFF setting if the communication connection is lost. O FF ‘T’ Flow Salt On/Off Output R Notes: 14 Operation Salt Ocean water – 36,000 PPM Tear drop – 7,200 PPM AquaPure ® Ei - 3,500 to 4,000 PPM As a general guideline the purer the salt, the better the life and performance of the chlorinator. Calcium and magnesium are the enemies of the cell and cause scaling, poor performance and shortened anode life. We do not recommend anything less than food grade salt with the following characteristics: 9 Minimum 99.8% pure NaCl 9 No added anti-caking agents 9 No sodium ferrocyanide (aka yellow prussiate of soda) 9 Non-iodized Operation Indicates level of chlorine production. To turn the Ei on, press the ON button. To increase the Output, press the Output button. ON ON Flo w Sa lt Flo w Sa lt On/Off Output On/Off Output R R ON/OFF OUTPUT As a stand alone chlorinator, the output is measured in 20% increments. When interfaced with a controller the Ei will accept any increment but will “round” the output light to the nearest 20%. Example: 35% output will round up to 40% and illuminate 2 output lights, even though the actual output is 35% Notes: 16 Polarity Reversal ON CLEANING The Ei reverses polarity every 5 hours of operating time. When reversing polarity, “CLEANING” is displayed. Sal t Flow On/Off Output The Ei powers down for 5 minutes and the output lights drop to 1 amber light. After reversing polarity, it powers up to the previous output setting. The polarity of the Ei can be manually reversed by pressing the ‘hidden’ REVERSE button under the Jandy logo for ~4 seconds. The output at the cell will turn off momentarily, the polarity will reverse and the output will turn back on. R Hidden polarity button under the Jandy logo. To Change Polarity Reversal Time REVERSE INTERVAL 5.0 HOURS REVERSE INTERVAL 2.5 HOURS Flow Sa lt Flo w Sal t On/Off Output On/Off Output R R The Ei is set to reverse polarity every 5 hours of operation time. This can be changed to every 2.5 hours of operation time by pressing the ON/OFF button and the hidden polarity reverse button (under the Jandy label) simultaneously. Notes: 17 No Flow Light “NO FLOW” is displayed when there is insufficient or no water flow through the cell. There is no chlorine production at this time. Flo w ** ON NO FLOW! ** Sa lt The minimum flow rate is 40 gpm. It may also activate if the flow pod is installed at more than 45° to the pipe or if the flow switch paddle has been turned within the flow pod. On/ Off Output R Check Salt Light In Firmware V 2.00 the “Check Salt” light will illuminate and the LCD will read CHECK SALT for a variety of conditions including low salt, low water temperature, low incoming power or a worn or damaged electrode. ** Flow ON CHECK SALT ** Sa lt On/Off Output R Check Salt Light V 2.00 • The ideal salt level is 4000 ppm and the ideal water temperature is 80º F. • The CHECK SALT light will illuminate & the LCD will read “Check Salt” if the water temp is below 65º, the salt level is below 3000 ppm or there is a combination of lower than ideal salt & lower than ideal water temp. This is the same as a Clearwater LM chlorinator. • A cell which is damaged or dying out can also activate the CHECK SALT light. • Once the CHECK SALT light is illuminated, the output lights will not illuminate, even though the Ei will continue to attempt to produce chlorine at the chosen output setting. • The water may be too cold or the salt level too low to achieve this output but the Ei will continue to try to produce, even though no output lights are illuminated. 18 Check Salt Light V2.10 • In firmware V2.10 as the pool water temperature or salt level falls the LCD will read “Check Salt or Low Temperature”. • The “Check Salt” light will NOT illuminate until the water temperature is near freezing AND the salt level falls to 3000 ppm or less. • The LCD message can occur at a variety of salt levels or water temperatures - see the chart on the next slide. Firmware V2.10 (V2.10) Notes: 19 Check Salt Light V2.10 ON CHECK SALT OR ON LOW TEMPERATURE Flow Sa lt Flo w Sa lt On/Off Output On/Off Output R R • When this message is displayed, the output lights will continue to function and the Ei will try to produce the required amount of chlorine. The water may become cold enough or the salt low enough that the Ei will not be able to generate desired amount of chlorine. • Solutions • Add salt until the indicator turns off – – This may require higher salt levels than recommended in the product manual There is no high salt shut off on the Ei This may not be cost effective or practical Freezing conditions or extremely low salt levels will shorten cell life • • Heat the water until the indicator turns off – – Ignore the warning - the Ei will continue to run Notes: 20 Ei With Aqualink RS The Ei appears as AquaPure in the Aqualink RS menu screen MENU HELP PROGRAM SET TEMP SET TIME SET AquaPure DISPLAY LIGHT LOCKOUTS PASSWORD PROGRAM GROUP SYSTEM SETUP BOOST SELECT BACK DONE > > > > > > > > > > Changing the Ei output from the Aqualink RS screen SET AquaPure SET TO 15% BACK DONE Use ARROW KEYS to set value. The battery life is 500 hours. They are NiMH batteries and are not replaceable • When connected to a controller and SPA mode is selected at the controller the output of the Ei will drop to 20% (minimum) • When connected to a controller and BOOST is selected at the controller, the output of the Ei will go to 100% • The correct output current is 5 Amps +/- 5%. The output voltage depends on the cell condition, salt level and water temperature. When running @ 4000ppm Salt & 80° F with a new cell the Ei output voltage will be around 21-22VDC. • If either or both fuses on the PCB are blown, replace the PCB.
