The joint venture companies of Zuari are Zuari Investments Ltd, Zuari Indian Oil Tanking Ltd, Zuari Maroc Phosphates Ltd. and Zuari Rotem Speciality Fertilizer Ltd. Our Plants Established in 1973, the Zuari fertiliser plant is a hallmark in the development of large-scale industry in Goa. At the time of initiation, the plant was the largest industrial undertaking in Goa, acting as an impetus for rapid economic growth in the surrounding areas. The plant was started as a financial and technical collaboration between the house of Birlas, US Steel Corporation (USX), International Finance Corporation, and the Bank of America. The design, engineering, and construction of the plant were carried out by Toyo Engineering Japan. The plant has an annual installed capacity of 1100000 metric tones of fertilisers. The entire manufacturing facility comprises of four separate plants, namely the Ammonia, Urea, NPK A and NPK B. Zuari‟s complex fertiliser plants use the latest in pipe reactor technology and are based on the slurry granulation process. The plants have played a key role over the last thirty-five years in meeting the fertiliser demand across four states. Ammonia Zuari Industries Ltd Ammonia plant is based on the ICI Steam reforming process. Under this process, naphtha is used as feedstock. The manufacturing process for Ammonia results in Carbon dioxide (CO2) being produced as a by-product. Both the Ammonia and the Carbon dioxide generated are essential for the manufacture of urea. Zuari‟s Ammonia plant has an installed capacity of 660 metric tonnes per day. There are a number of processes that go into the manufacture of Ammonia, including Hydro Desulphurisation (by IFP Process), Reforming and Shift Conversion (by ICI Process), CO2 Removal (by Benfield Process) and Synthesis (by TEC Process). The result of these processes is liquid Ammonia that is either fed continuously to the Urea plant and NPK A and NPK B plants or sent for storage. All process condensate that is generated from the manufacturing process is fed to a hydrolyser / stripper. The Zuari plant was the first one to adopt this high tech facility in India in 1977. Gas from the stripper is scrubbed and utilised in the NPK A / NPK B plants, while the stripped condensate water is recycled in a water treatment plant. Urea The Urea plant is a single stream plant and utilises a Mitsui Toatsu total recycle- C process. The plant has a capacity of 1,140 metric tonnes per day. The urea plant boasts of an upgraded water recovery system. Barometric condenser water is recycled in a close-loop cooling tower. Recycled water is used for sealing gland packing of various pumps. Water that accumulates due to the blow down from the tower is reused as pro cess water in the manufacturing process. NPK – A By adopting technology based on the slurry granulation process, the NPK A plant can manufacture complex fertilisers (NPK) such as 28:28:0 (Uramphos), 18:46:0 (Samrat), 19:19:19 (Sampurna), and 14:35:14 (Sampatti). Zuari‟s NPK plant incorporates the latest in pipe reactor technology, which ensures that the fertilisers produced in this plant are some of the highest fertiliser grades in the country. The NPK plant has reduced the effluent it generates by adopting numerous processes. The particulate emissions of the NPK plant is considerably lower than requisite industry standards. This has been achieved by the utilisation of a high efficiency scrubber. Water that is used for washing in the manufacturing process contains ammoniacal nitrogen, urea and phosphates. This water is collected in a recovery tank, recycled, and used once again in the plant reducing the effluent discharge. NPK – B Zuari‟s NPK B plant was established in 1984. The plant manufactures DAP . The plant has an installed capacity of 1,100 metric tonnes per day. The technology adopted in the NPK B plant like the NPK A plant is based on the slurry granulation process. This process is highly efficient and produces the minimum amount of emissions. In addition to this, to be resource and environmentally friendly, the NPK B plant utilises process condensate from the Ammonia plant once it is passed through a hydrolyser stripper, recycling and reducing wastage in the process. The high standard of safety in the plant is achieved by a variety of well-established processes such as air monitoring. The NPK B stack is analysed for Sulphur dioxide, Ammonia and suspended particulate matter. The eco friendliness of this plant and its zero effluent operations ensure that it is completely in accord with Zuari‟s environment policies. Jai Kisaan Sangam In order to forge ties with farmers and understand their needs, Zuari‟s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) program Jaikisaan Sangam was conceived in April 2005. This program focuses on providing value-added services to the farmer. The word Sangam signifies the confluence of two rivers and with respect to Zuari, connotes the coming together of Zuari and its farmers and dealers. This essence of the Sangam initiative has been captured in its logo, which depicts a narrow strip of land between two rivers that join. The objective of Jai Kisaan Sangam is to make farming more profitable for the individual farmer by increasing his net income. This is achieved by customized services tailored to his needs, helping and guiding him to adopt scientific agricultural practices. Some services that Zuari provides under this program include soil testing, animal health, family health, agri-input marketing, and crop husbandry. In order to avail these services a farmer merely has to register under the Jai Kisaan Sangam scheme. Jaikisaan Krishi Sevak The backbone to implementing this program is Zuari‟s grass-root level extension worker, the Jaikisaan Krishi Sevak. The role of Jaikisaan Krishi Sevak is to ensure periodic interaction and deliver products and services to farmers. Each Krishi Sevak covers 10 – 12 villages. The Jaikisaan Sangam program was initiated in Maharashtra and Karnataka and is set to spread to the rest of the marketing arearest of marketing area. Jaikisaan Sangam Varta Jaikisaan Sangam Varta is a quarterly magazine on agriculture, delivered by hand to JKS members. Written in colloquial language for easy understanding, the newsletter contains articles on important topics relevant to the needs of Sangam farmers. The newsletter has an FAQ section, which provides a forum for farmers to get advice from the experts. Another feature of the newsletter is photographs of recent Sangam activities in different parts of the state. Soil Testing Services Soil testing is the basic service offered to all J.K.Sangam registered members. JKS collects soil sample from a farmer‟s field and sends it to its Zuari's laboratory at Bangalore or Pune. These laboratories are equipped with an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, for micronutrient status analysis of the soil. Soil testing is conducted for N, P, K as well as micronutrients. The laboratories are also equipped to undertake the testing of water, leaf, organic manure and fertiliser samples. The soil test reports are made available to the farmers in a month‟s time. Based on these reports, JKS provides further guidance on dosage of fertilisers, micronutrients, soil conditioners etc. For the members of Jaikisaan Sangam, all analytical services are free of cost. Optional Services Zuari provides various value added services to farmers, to ensure Jaikisaan Sangam is truly beneficial to them. Zuari understands that thriving livestock is critical for agriculture to be successful in India. As part of the Sangam program, Zuari organizes animal health camps within its marketing area. Zuari takes the help of veterinary doctors to organize these camps, where artificial insemination and vaccination are two main activities conducted. In order to provide for the wellbeing of the farmers family, Zuari undertakes family- healthcamp programs. These camps include the family/children health camp, eye check up camps etc. These camps are conducted by taking help of local doctors and specialists from nearby areas. Public Utilities In order to improve the quality of life of the Indian farmer, Zuari has undertaken numerous welfare programs. The activities undertaken as part of this program include the construction of bus shelters in rural areas, providing facilities for drinking water, toilet facilities, etc. To give financial support and inspiration to the children of farmers, Zuari awards scholarships to students from economically backward classes who wish to pursue professional degree courses in agriculture and engineering. The company also constructs playgrounds for schools and helps maintain parks and gardens. The company has even undertaken planting of trees along highways. Till date Zuari has constructed over 20 bus shelters, 4 drinking water tanks, 15 tree base structures, and 2 playgrounds in the marketing territory under this program. Sponsoring Rural Sports Competition is part and parcel of life. Zuari seeks to instil the spirit of competition in the young and young at heart by sponsoring various rural sports competitions. These sports activities range from wrestling and kabaddi tournaments to popular rural sports such as bullock cart racing. Zuari seeks the help of numerous village sports clubs, youth associations and farmers clubs to conduct these activities. Watershed Development To promote water conservation and help enrich the health of the soil, Zuari initiated a watershed development project in Kohinkarwadi, a drought prone village in Pune, Maharashtra. This village has low to medium rainfall, with an average of 900mm. Watershed development helps collect water through soil and water conservation measures – increasing the water table in the process Zuari helped in constructing various water harvesting structures and undertook contour bunding and regeneration of biomass cover in the project village. In collaboration with Vanarai Pune, an NGO, Zuari constructed numerous permanent structures including the followinga. Loose Boulders : Semi permanent structure constructed to control soil erosion and to reduce the speed of run off water. About 55 loose boulders were constructed in the village, for increasing the water level of near by wells. b. Contour Bund : A soil or stone bund, constructed along the elevation of land. In other words, a mechanical barrier across the slope of the land. c. Gabion Structure: A semi permanent structure similar to loose boulders, the difference being boulders are bound together by galvanized wire mesh (3 mm diameter) which increases the life of the structure. d. Stone Bund: A simple bund constructed with locally available stones across the stream to control soil erosion and cutting of Agricultural land. e. Farm Pond: A small water harvesting structure constructed in the farm itself that helps increase soil moisture. Thus, stored water can be used for standing crops. Four such farm ponds were constructed in the village. f. Masonry Check Dam: A small stone structure built in cement across a stream to store water. g. Nalla Training: This helps to avoid cutting of sides during water flow and damage to agricultural land. One such structure was constructed in the village. Bore Well Recharging - Hiriyur In order to provide better living conditions for inhabitants of Hiriyur village of Chitradurga district of Karnataka, Zuari implemented a bore well recharging program. This district relies solely on bore wells and rainwater as sources of water for domestic consumption and agriculture. The water in these wells dries up due to over use and lack of replenishment. The natural replenishment of bore wells is a slow process in several parts of interior Karnataka. It is common for bore wells in this region to dry up. These bore wells can be replenished artificially by constructing recharging / infiltration tanks around the well. These tanks help by injecting rainwater directly into the ground water resource. The Mysore Resettlement and Development Authority is an NGO renowned for expertise in the recharging technique. Zuari constructed three recharging tanks in the village in association with this NGO. Constructed in January 2005 the tanks have helped in injecting a large quantity of surface flowing water into the bore wells. The success of the project is evident as the bore wells easily yield ample water for daily use, solving the water scarcity problem the farmers faced Scholarships The Company extends financial support in the form of scholarships to meritorious students, one each in Agriculture and Engineering degree course annually. These scholarships are awarded based upon merit cum need i.e. 85% for merit and 15% for the parental income status. The minimum eligible percentage criteria for scholarship in Engineering and Agriculture degree course is 70% and 60% respectively. Engineering students should have secured admission for degree course in Engineering affiliated to the Goa University or BITS PILANI – Goa Campus. Scholarship in Agriculture is restricted to admission to recognized Agriculture Universities of Maharashtra and Karnataka. These scholarships were instituted over thirty years ago and carry cash award of Rs.12,000/per subject, per annum for the duration of degree course. Applications for awarding these scholarships were invited through advertisements in the Goan dailies and also through intimation to all Engineering Colleges in Goa and Directorate of Agriculture, Panaji, Goa. Scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year was warded to Miss Lovela Carvalho of Canacona who secured overall 84.8% in HSSC. She has secured admission in Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna, Goa, while scholarship in Agriculture degree course is awarded to Miss Pallavi Naguesh Prabhu of Ponda who secured overall 63.7% in HSSC. She has secured admission to College of Agriculture, Dapoli for B.Sc (Horticulture) degree course. In addition, Zuari awards annual scholarships to four neighbouring high school students who excel in SSC examination. These high schools are located at Zuarinagar, Sancoale, Velsao and Cansaulim which is in Company‟s neighbourhood. Each scholarship carry cash award of Rs.2500/- per annum per high school and are awarded during two years HSSC course i.e Rs.2500 x 2 = Rs.5000 per student. Scholarship for the academic year 2008-09 was awarded to Mr. Cruz Colaco of Infant Jesus Academy, Velsao, Miss Fondekar Pooja Sutar of St. Thomas High School, Cansaulim, Miss Carvalho Lioba Raquel of Fr. Joseph Vaz High School, Sancoale and Miss Hemavati K. Hosmani of Govt. High School, Zuarinagar. Zuari & Environment The earth which nurtures all forms of life is also the storehouse of all treasures. These treasures bring prosperity and glory to mankind. Sustaining all living beings and stationary objects, the mother earth is the source of all civilisations. We pray to you, mother earth, to bestow on us peace and prosperity. Atharva Veda (Chapter 12/6) Conserving the environment is critical to all of Zuari‟s business operations. The company has developed and implemented an environmental management policy that covers a wide range of issues from the treatment and recovery of wastes, emission control, to education of personnel. In fact, the entire production process at the Zuari plant has been developed keeping environment conservation at each and every step in mind. This is in contrast to merely implementing an „end of pipe‟ solution for disposal of wastes. Zuari sees expenditure on improving the eco-friendliness of its plants as an investment and not a cost. It is this outlook that has enabled Zuari to become an industry leader in environmental management. Trees at ZuariNagar Zuari is the first company in India to undertake a vegetative mapping exercise within its industrial campus. Eco-scientists and botanists use this technique to profile existing vegetation within an area by cataloguing trees and other vegetation. This vegetative mapping project was carried out in conjecture with the Botany department of Goa University. The head of the botany department Dr Torne formed a team of botanists and research students for the assignment. This exercise at the Zuarinagar estate was not only restricted to vegetation mapping but also covered classification of trees and conducting a tree census. The study also dealt with existence of a number of exotic species, medicinal plants, flora and fauna. The results revealed that there are over 100 species of trees and ground fauna with over 80 species of birds on the campus. The fact that this garden exists on what was once, a barren rocky land, makes this success story even more astonishing. The lush industrial garden of Zuarinagar is home to a variety of trees and is even home to the real Ashoka tree – Saraca Indica. This tree is considered to be an endangered tree as there is only one other tree of its kind in Goa. Zuari planted a number of endangered trees on the Western coastline including soap nut, dhobi nut and gunj The green vegetative cover at the Zuarinagar spreads over a thousand acres with more than 200, 000 trees. Zuari has even roped in nearby villagers encouraging them to plant trees of practical use to them such as fruit trees like coconut or mango. Orchid Project Due to a booming tourism industry, there is a huge demand for flowers in Goa especially from the hotel industry in Goa. Every year the state imports flowers worth Rs four crores to meet this demand. High tech flower growing in Goa is not common. However, the climatic conditions in Goa are ideal for the growth of Orchids. It is due to these ideal conditions, combined with the demand for flowers, that Zuari seeks to encourage farmers to take up orchid cultivation in coastal areas. In order to evoke interest amongst farmers for growing Orchids, Zuari established a demonstration unit at its complex. The role of this unit is to explain how to utilise modern technology for growing orchids. Cashew Project Cashew is one of Goa‟s most important horticultural crops. The crop is grown over 55000 hectares. It is only recently that cashew growing in Goa has come into the limelight as a cash crop. Though cultivation of cashew in Goa can be traced back to the Portuguese, for many years the crop was not grown commercially. Originally, a local variety of cashew was grown in Goa and the use of high yielding varieties of the crop was unknown to local farmers. The local variety of cashew used to give an average yield of 1.5 kg per tree, while a high yielding variety could have easily produced 12 to 15kg per tree. In order to boost crop yield, Zuari undertook a familiarization program for high yielding cashew varieties amongst farmers. This helped spread awareness about the various types of grafts of cashew that were available for commercial cultivation. Zuari even procured 3000 high yield cashew grafts including the Vengurla-1 and Vengurla-4 from research stations in neighbouring states, distributing them to progressive farmers at subsidized rates. This was because cashew yields in neighbouring states were three times higher. After the pioneering steps that Zuari undertook to promote the use of cashew grafts, the Directorate of Agriculture established a special scheme for cashew area expansion. This lead to the use of cashew grafts becoming a common feature amongst farmers in Goa. Recently the Indian Council of Agricultural Research at Old Goa identified some elite local selections of cashew, which have potential for high yield raw nuts as well as apples. These apples are useful for the distillation of liquor and fetch a high price. Zuari has established a demonstration of these elite trees at the Zuarinagar estate. Farmers can see first hand, the performance Zero Effluent Plants Zuari Industries Ltd was the first company to establish a zero effluent plant in the country. The success behind this is the fact that the plant has implemented a carefully planned system of segregating effluent, and recycling and reusing all wastewater that the plant generates. This cycle ensures that no wastewater is discharged that may damage the surrounding environment. When initially conceived, the plant required five million gallons of water for its daily operations. The water was released into the ocean after being treated to ensure that it would not harm the marine life. Wastewater at the Zuari plant was generated by a number of activities including pollutants from the cooling water used for the barometric condenser, process condensate, and discharge from the Ammonia plant, wastewater from the NPK A plant and effluent water from the utilities plants. All Zuari plants also discharged effluent water generated from domestic consumption and during washing. Zuari management realised the potential problem that effluent water generation posed. The management established a number of measures to negate the discharge of effluent water from the plant. Under the new system, wastewater generated due to a process in the plant is recycled, within the individual process and reintroduced for use. A hydrolyser stripper is used in the Ammonia plant, allowing all condensate from the plant to be stripped and the water used in the treatment plant while the gases are utilised in the NPK plant. Wastewater from the plants is segregated, recycled and reused. Sewage water from the plant is also recycled. The company even undertakes de-oiling and filtration of streams and the neutralization of amonical nitrogen streams and reuse. It is due to the implementation of these measures that today; Zuari no longer discharges any wastewater into the sea. at the site and can adopt these varieties in their farm. Vermicompost Unit, Zuarinagar, Goa As part of its ongoing CSR initiatives, ZIL has launched Project Uday - An ambitious drive which is actively bringing together environment conscious minds to turn biodegradable waste disposed from canteens, offices and households in the Zuari Township in Goa to valuable Vermicompost. This organic manure (bio-fertilizer) produced as the vermicast by earthworm feeding on biological waste material and plant residues. Vermicompost is eco-friendly, nontoxic, consumes low energy input for composting and is a recycled biological product. It is odorless, clean, organic material, containing adequate quantities of N, P, K and several micronutrients making it a preferred nutrient for organic farming. More than 30 percent of Asia‟s irrigated land is in India. The country has the highest proportion of arable land as compared to USA and China. However, this land is underutilised. Israel produces US $5.8 million in agriculture output per square kilometre of arable land, while India produces just US $88,000. This means there is plenty of potential waiting to be harnessed. With corporate involvement and the implementation of technology and modern methods of farming, farmers will be able to reap rewards. The Indian fertiliser industry has played a pivotal support role to the Indian agricultural industry. The growth in the use of chemical fertilisers amongst farmers has been the secret of the nation‟s so called green revolution of the late sixties. The main fertilisers used in the state include phosphate based fertilisers, nitrogenous fertilisers, and complex fertilisers. Today India is the third largest fertilizer producer in the world. There are three major players in the Indian fertiliser industry namely the government owned public sector undertakings, private sector units and cooperative societies. The Government of India subsidises fertilisers to ensure that fertiliser is easily available to farmers and the country remains self sufficient in agriculture and food grain production. This is achieved by controlling the price of the fertiliser and the amount of production. The Indian Fertiliser Association is a body that coordinates with the Government of India to ensure that the government‟s macro economic objectives for Indian agriculture are met.
