The Oldenburg Horse 2 3 Year old Under Saddle Champion Stallion Fürstenstein (Fürst Romancier-Hohenstein/Trakehner-Donnerhall) was sold to the dressage stables of master rider, Andreas Helgstrand, in Denmark for 165,000 2. Photographer: Beelitz 3 The Oldenburg Horse Young Stallions The collection of riding horses was enhanced by some of the stallions from the 1st Oldenburg Saddle Licensing. The average price for licensed stallions was 77,500 2 and 15,600 2 for stallions that were not licensed. Total sales achieved for these stallions was 388,000 2 and almost half of them were sold to customers from abroad. It was very satisfying to see there was such great interest from abroad. Customers from the US, Russia, Denmark, France, Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Belgium, Hungary, the Ukraine and Austria bought 19 riding horses in total. Nearly half of these, nine to be exact, were sold to the US. Among them was the OS star, Cassadeur G, born 2006, by Cartani out of Arabell by Airport, bred and owned by the Gerdes brothers from Bargstedt. A delegation from Russia purchased six. Katja Eilers, who flew in for the auction, was very satisfied with their winning bids for USA: ”Spring fever has sprung in CT- USA, and with it my clients Susi Stone & Russell Barton decided it was time to update our fine selection of riding horses at White Bridge Farm in Litchfield, CT. After having done extensive Research with the auction dvd and online videos, we had narrowed our search Stern von Afrika OLD (San Amour-Harvard-Canaster) achieved the highest price of 200,000 2 at the 76th Photographer: Ernst Spring Elite Auction. Report by Saskia Albrecht very unique debut indeed. An Oldenburg Saddle Licensing was held for the very first time - together with the 76th Spring Elite Auction in Vechta. Stern von Afrika OLD, the top priced horse at the auction, and Fürstenstein, decorated with the Champion Stallion sash, gave this event a special note. Stern von Afrika OLD, born 2008, by San Amour out of Hanseatin by Harvard, bred by Tammo Francksen from Butjadingen and owned by Ute Francksen, Butjadingen, was the celebrated, top priced horse at the 76th Spring Elite Auction. The Vice Bundeschampion and Rastede State Champion changed hands for 200,000 2 and is off to a dressage stable in Berlin. One of Vechta’s regular customers, Bernadette Brune from Monaco, purchased the second most expensive horse: Awakino Spirit of the Age, born 2004, by Stedinger out of Ultra Davenia by Donnerhall-Rohdiamant, bred by Michael Mertens from Jever and owned by Karl-Heinz Reipen, Awakino Stud, New Zealand. Already trained to St. Georg level, this stallion was knocked down for 190,000 2. The Champion Stallion of the 1st Oldenburg Saddle Licensing, Fürstenstein, born 2009, by Fürst Romancier out of High Value by Hohenstein (Trakehner) -Donnerhall, bred by Lüder Lepenies from Deinste and owned A by Annette Lepenies, Deinste, brought 165,000 2, the third highest price. Fürstenstein will be taking up residence with the master Danish dressage rider, Andreas Helgstrand. The riding horses in this strong collection sold for an average price of 40,411 2 with sales totaling 1,818,500 2. The 1-c premium stallion of the 1st Oldenburg Saddle Licening, Sao Passionato (Sir Donnerhall-Friedensfürst (Trakehner) Rocher d’Or), will be sent to Ines Westendarp for the time being to be trained. Susi was able to try the jumpers every day and I managed to try several great dressage horses. As usual we got treated like ”Royalty”. This was my clients first horse buying trip to Germany, and it certainly will not their last ! From the Evening Exhibitions to the Stallion Testing, it was an extremely educational week for all of us. As I am writing this note, we are awaiting the arrival of Selleck & Cassadeur, who are being released out of quarantine today. Quartilaz and Dorsey will follow next week! Not only did we manage the final bid on 3 of the auction horses, but also bought a excit- ing young 3 old prospect by Don Diamond out of a Wallstreet Dam! For myself I must add that I have been around Performance Horse Auctions since the age of 17, and keep coming back to Vechta, knowing that the Auction Team is aware of my needs and is able to match myself & my clients with great Horses over and over again.” A First in Germany Unique in Germany and in the Oldenburg Horse Center Vechta for the first time, an Oldenburg spring licensing with saddle test was held. With this new licensing model, the three-year old candi- dates are not only presented in free jumping and on hard ground but also under saddle, including a guest rider test. The ability to make a statement on the rideability of a stallion before he is licensed is a milestone in German riding horse breeding. Since the result of this premiere Oldenburg saddle licensing was very positive, we are optimistic that this method will be implemented over the long term. Fürstenstein was ceremonially crowned the Champion Stallion and this was the second time in a row that Fürst Ro- To the joy of his new owner, Russel Barton, the gorgeous gray Quartilaz (Quaterback-Stedinger-Coriander) can look forward to his new home in Katja Eilers’ dressage stables. A four-year old Sir-Donnerhall son out of Esmiralda by Escudo-Matcho AA, bred by Active Equestrian in Great Britain and owned by Ingo Pape in Hemmor, was awarded the silver medal in the lot of premium stallions. Bronze went to Sao Passionato, born 2009, by Sir Donnerhall I out of Amelie by Friedensfürst (Trakehner) - Rocher d’Or, bred by Ludger Bührmann from Bühre and owned by Uwe Timme in Cappeln. He was sold at the auction to the US. Springpferdezuchtverband OldenburgInternational licensed a Colbert GTI son out of Baghira by Balou du Rouet-Lancer III, born 2009, bred by Werner Gehring from Steinhagen and owned by Gestüt Appenriede in Winkelsett. The Result of the Debut Patrick Burssens from Florida and his customers were delighted with their purchase of five auction horses. Photographer: Ernst Eight stallions in total were licensed by the stallion committee of the Verband der Züchter des Oldenburger Pferdes. Springpferdezuchtverband OldenburgInternational licensed just one stallion. ”Our first saddle licensing was quite successful. It showed that some stallions which would have been licensed, had they only been shown in hand, do not always hold what they promised under saddle and this applies vice versa as well. Since we want to select riding horses, this method that we have now tested should be the method of choice. For the future, we should think about letting four-year old stallions jump over a small jump under saddle to get a better impression of how they will perform under saddle”, commented Dr. Wolfgang Schulze-Schleppinghoff, the Breeding Director of both Oldenburg Verbands, who was quite satisfied at the end of the saddle licensing. North American Director Holly Simensen commented: "The finale and crowning of the inaugural licensing of Under Saddle The fabulous gaits of the Reserve Champion Stallion Scuderia (Sir DonnerhallEscudo-Macho AA) attracted all eyes. Photographer: Ernst No problem for the young stallions: Sao Passionato mastered the guest rider test under Henrike Sommer in the enormous auction indoor during the licensing with ease. Photographer: Ernst 7 The Oldenburg Horse Young Stallions took place in Vechta on March 29th. In the opinion of the those breeders who made the excursion across the Atlantic to view this momentous occasion, the resounding conclusion was success! Although there were many skeptics initially, the possibility of being able to observe these youngsters and how they handle an audience in unfamiliar surroundings, noise and movement in stands, and attitude all became evident rather quickly. In as much in this group of spectators and those who were able to watch the young stallions through videos this venue opened a vast new array of information that is crucial to our breeding. After all we must produce horses that have a high degree of ridability as well as good looks and swinging gaits. There is a certain amount of heritability in breeding, but as one can take from the Throughbred industry, this is not the only answer. With race horses bred on pedigree an answer comes quickly as their performance career is over normally at the end of their 4 year old year, and they start to perform at 2. And the stallion duds in the breeding shed can surface really quickly regardless of their ability on the track This does not happen with riding horses, so we also must have temperament and character as well as robustness and good health in our store of information. How they handle the stress of a rider is Susi Stone, Russell Barton and Katja Eilers enjoy the stylish atmosphere at the Oldenburg Horse Center Vechta. Photographer: Ernst very important! This appears to be a giant step forward particularly for dressage horses. With the jumpers perhaps there needs a small amount if refining as jumping courses with such youngsters is not necessarily an indication of scope but again the youngsters showed brav- ery and some a genuine enjoyment on jumping." The Voices of the Stallion Committee Peter Weinberg, a member of the licensing committee for Springpferdezuchtverband Oldenburg-International (OS), reported ”I think that this new model of a saddle licensing is very good. Many horses present themselves entirely differently under saddle than running loose. I even wish that older stallions could jump over a couple small jumps under saddle. Even if it was the first time, everything went well. I am a supporter of the saddle licensing, especially for the show jumpers.” Wolfram Wittig, a member of the stallion committee for the Verband der Züchter des Oldenburger Pferdes (OL), was also quite satisfied. ”Despite all the predictions to the contrary, the saddle test was very successful as a part of the licensing. The horses were nicely but also appropriately presented. There were no problems for the riders to get in the saddle in the large indoor either. We should especially praise our guest riders, Ralf Hilliges and Henrike Sommer, who really did a fantastic job with these young stallions. This method is a better way to select since it says a lot more about their quality as a riding horse.” For now, the elegant dancer Elfentanz (Fidertanz-De Niro-Rohdiamant) will be off to the famous Balkenhol stables for further training. Patrick Burssens was delighted to receive the knock-down for this State Premium Mare. In the future, she will be ridden in Florida by his daughter Monica. Harmony’s Sandro (by Sandro Hit x Balina (Glorieux) bred by Erhardt Duske) and Leslie Webb put on fantastic performances and won the Grand Prix de Dressage (65.87%) as well as the Grand Prix Freestyle (66.13%) and also placed in other Grand Prix. Le Mont d’Or (by Landjuwel Gold x Wie Andrea (Wie Weltmeyer), bred by Heinz Braul, Lehrte, Germany), ridden by Anja Plönzke, took sixth place in the qualifier for the Grand Prix Freestyle with 68.979% and then revved up to third place in the Freestyle (73.350%). In a further test, a Grand Prix, they ranked second (71.851%). Rafalca (born 1997, by Argentinus x Ratine (Rubinstein I), bred by Erwin Risch, Menslage, Germany), ridden by Jan Ebeling (USA), was busy competing on the other side of the US in Burbank, California where he took first, second and other placings. Their ride in the Grand Prix ended with a fantastic second place (70.426%) and they were the joyous winners of the Grand Prix Freestyle to Music (73.600%)). Renaissance Tyme (Royal Diamond x Dream of Heidelberg) was in top form under Evi Strasser. For the past five years, Canadian Olympian Evi Strasser, who is known by many for the outstanding quality horses she selects as competition partners, has paid careful attention to detail while developing Renaissance Tyme. It appears it was Tyme well spent. The last class of the WEF Wellington Dressage Classic, held at the Global Dressage Festival show grounds in Wellington, FL (USA), the FEI test of choice, Strasser carefully guided her Royal Diamond son, Renaissance Tyme through the FEI Grand Prix test for the very first time, earning a 67.28% Later Strasser told us ”I’m so lucky to own this wonderful horse. Ayscha (born 2001, by Welt Hit II x African Dream (Rouletto), bred by Christin Bökhoff, Friedeburg-Marx, Germany), and her rider Shannon Dueck (CAN) also made a great impression with a fourth place in a Grand Prix and a Freestyle in Florida in the WEF series. But this horse gives me the ultimate feeling. He’s the best horse I have ever trained and ridden.” That’s really quite a statement coming from a rider who has represented her country in some of the most prestigious championships around the world, including Olympic Games. When asked her future plans for Renaissance Tyme, Strasser explained, ”The plan now is to work on the details and get him more confirmed in all of the Grand Prix movements.” Then the pair will travel to Europe where Strasser will introduce Renaissance Tyme to the international scene. This season, while in Florida, Strasser had the opportunity to work with two trusted colleagues, Robert Dover and Lars Peterson, who aided Strasser in preparing Renaissance Tyme to make the transition into the Grand Prix arena. Strasser reported that she was especially pleased that following her final halt, Renaissance Tyme quietly and confidently exited the arena on a long rein. Strasser concluded the interview expressing how grateful she is to have the support of Karen Soupcoff, adding ”without her, I couldn’t do all of this”. Renaissance Tyme was discovered at the 2007 Spring Elite Auction in Vechta and then found his way to the masterful hands of Evi Strasser. Scholastica (born 2007, by Sir Donnerhall x Loni (Lord Sinclair), bred by Manfred Langelüddecke, exceeded all expectations. It has been a very successful year for the 2011 Vechta Elite Spring auction alumni, Scholastica, and her owner Amy Swerdlin. It was the beginning of May 2011 when Scholastica was delivered to her new home at Palm Beach Equine Sports Complex in Wellington, FL. Two weeks following her arrival began a winning trend for this young mare and her amateur rider. Scholastica boasts 18 wins out of 23 starts, with high placings in the remaining 5 classes, many filled with top horse and rider combinations commonly seen during the Wellington Winter Circuit. Prior to his importation to the United States, Supremat gained attention in Europe placing second in a Bundeschampionat class for three-year-old riding stallions. He was also the Reserve State Champion of three-year old stallions at the Oldenburg State Championships in Rastede, Germany. Canton and Supremat will have little time to celebrate their victory as the two are relocating to Texas where Canton will base his training operation at Shoofly Farm. Canton plans to take part in the Global Dressage Festival, one of the world’s largest international and national dressage circuits, offering more than $275,000 in prize money next year. Winchester (World of Dreams x Fürst Heinrich), a Diamante Farm’s Oldenburg gelding, and Devon Kane left a lasting impression. Kane, a long time student of Olympian Michelle Gibson, was undoubtedly pleased with Winchester’s performance in the USEF 4 year old test, asked her thoughts regarding the Global Dressage Festival as a venue, Kane remarked ”I absolutely enjoyed showing at the new Global Dressage Festival facility. Attention was paid to every detail of the planning and building of the facility to truly make it a world-class venue for dressage. The footing is exceptional and consistent, the stalls are permanent and so comfortable that my horses are lying down to sleep at the shows more than ever before. The exquisite ambiance distinguishes this facility and prize-rich circuit from all others in the US.” Wizard (born 1999, by Weltmeyer x Pica (Classiker), bred by Hans Lind, Augustfehn, Germany), was brilliant under Adrienne Lyle. The successful couple triumphed with a victory in the Grand Prix as well as the Grand Prix Freestyle. They finished fourth (72.149%), ninth (66.936%) and tenth (64.667%) in Grand Prix Special. Now, decorated with the Reserve Champion title, the former auction star can look forward to a career at Gestüt Vorwerk. Marta Kauffman, a Hollywood producer, is one star among our Oldenburg constellation of friends. This successful businesswoman has also built an admirable collection of champion Oldenburg dressage horses. Marta Kauffman’s chief trainer, Jaye Cherry, enjoys an excellent reputation in the U.S. dressage community because of her successes in competition. Their top horses include Dance With Me, a 2001 mare and a former Vechta auction horse. Dance With Me, by Dream of Love and out of Jonita by Rohdiamont/Weltmeister, was bred by Johann Brandes from Wardenburg. Another successful horse in the Kauffman lineup is the former top auction horse D’Amour. This 2000 chestnut mare by De Niro out of Unika by Figaro/Harnisch (a Trakehner) was bred by Helmut Kleen from Petersfehn. D’Amour, formerly known as Uniqua, was awarded the 1-b prize in the 2003 Brilliant ring in Rastede. Last Christmas Marta Kauffman gave herself the best Christmas present of all: Sondheim! He will be remembered by the spectators at that memorable event by his auction name, Sailor Moon. Marta Kauffman fell in love with the charming stallion when she saw his auction preview video. She promptly sent her trainer Jaye Cherry to Vechta to personally take a look at the black dream horse. After riding him briefly and discussing the matter with the auction team, the verdict was crystal clear: he was the one! Still he had to be purchased and it was only after an exciting bidding duel that ended at 140,000 Euros that Cherry and Kauffman could claim him. Jaye Cherry was overjoyed at that moment. Marta Kauffman chose the name Sondheim for her talented new horse as a tribute to Stephen Sondheim, a gifted lyricist and composer for stage and film. The name also pays homage to her ca- Jaye Cherry is thrilled about all the success achieved by Marta’s Oldenburgs. After the auction, Marta decided to leave her new purchase in Germany so that he could be schooled and prepared for the Stallion Performance Test. Johannes Westendarp was entrusted with Sondheim’s training. This proved a good choice as Sondheim passed his Performance Test and qualified for the 2011 Bundeschampionat with an outstanding score of 8.6. But it was time for Sondheim to say goodbye to his home country. Sondheim was probably not homesick at all during his first Christmas under the palm trees, rather than in cold Germany! These are all horses that left the Vechta auction stage to travel overseas to Jaye Cherry’s stables. Marta Kauffman and Jaye Cherry have purchased and imported many more horses to the U.S., but there are simply too many to list in this article. Marta Kauffman’s passion for Oldenburg horses and Dressage began with a bet. It was the end of the nineties, and Kauffman was fully occupied with her career as a producer for TV shows. She had not thought of horses in years when she 23 The Oldenburg Horse made this bet with an old friend. They each promised to do something that they had sworn they would never attempt again in their lives. Marta had been crazy about riding when she was young, but she had sworn to never get on a horse again after a serious riding accident. Nevertheless, a bet was a bet, and she decided she was going to overcome her fear and handle horses again. Step by step, her passion for horses returned. After meeting her trainer Jaye Cherry, Kauffman finally decided in 2000 to buy herself a dressage horse. Jaye Cherry can probably be called a pioneer of dressage in California. She started to ride in the beginning of the seventies, taking lessons from Hilda Gurney, a famous rider and trailblazer for dressage in the U.S. In the early eighties, the first clinics with Dr. Reiner Klimke and George Theodorescu were held in the US, and Jaye Cherry was there. In 1985 she made her first trip to Germany to look for horses for her customers. Soon she imported her first horse, Idol, and he ignited her love for the Oldenburg breed. The Oldenburg stallion by Inschallah-Magister was later licensed in the US. Cherry trained her Idol son Iroquois to Grand Prix; he is now 25 years old and still lives in her stables. When Jaye Cherry went to Vechta in 2000 to find an appropriate horse for Marta Kauffman at the Elite Fall Auction, Fascinating Sondheim (Sandro Hit x Rohdiamant) enjoys his new home in Hollywood. Photographer: Ernst she found exactly what she was seeking. She decided upon Donnegal, a 1997 dark chestnut mare by Donnerschwee out of Grundfee by Grundstein I-Black Sky xx, bred by Bernhild Kreuzkamp from Damme, Looking back, Marta Kauffman said that her relationship to Donnegal (named Derbywette in the auction catalogue) was ”love at first sight”. Cherry subsequently trained Donnegal up the levels through Grand Prix. ”Buying a horse is always something very emotional. The spark has to jump. Donnegal, for example, was a soul mate for me right from the beginning,” recalls Marta Kauffman, who has been loyal to the Vechta auction team ever since she purchased Donnegal, her first Oldenburg horse. Marta Kauffman and Jaye Cherry both appreciate the professional advice they receive from the auction managers, as well as the excellent service that is provided. Cherry explains, ”I come to Germany and ride some of the horses once or twice at the most. With that I can judge their rideability and movements, but I don’t have the chance to learn what their characters are like on a daily basis. Fortunately, I have learned that I can trust the professional advice and opinions of the auction team.” She laughs out loud when she remembers the days when she rode her first dressage tests in the seventies with her Appaloosa. At that time she never dreamed that sport and breeding would develop into what is has become today. You might wonder why Marta Kauffman never produced a TV series with horses. Kauffman grins, ”Not that I haven’t thought about it! And the actors are already in my stables!” So now we can wonder whether Sondheim and his friends will start a second career someday... outside the dressage arena? In Stockholm, back in 1912, Germany, France, and hometown favorite Sweden dominated the medal count and USA’s best finish was a team bronze in eventing. In the century of international show jumping since then, the sport has grown into a multi-billion dollar and highly competitive global industry where horses fly by aircraft on a weekly basis to compete for up to $1M prize money at nationally televised events all over the globe. While venue’s, footing, courses, and jumps have changed over the passing decades, one thing hasn’t : the passion of both riders T and breeders to produce the very best jumping horses in the world. Unlike most team sports in Olympic competition, the horse half of an Olympic horse and rider team does not have to show a passport from the country of origin to compete. As a result, riders and owners are free to breed and purchase horses in any country or registry of origin and compete them under their own country’s flag. Indeed, a quick survey of the pedigrees and registries of the last 23 Olypiad’s medal winners in show jumping shows an interesting pattern of increasingly diverse and complex breeding and registration strategies. While select breeding regions of north- ern Germany and the French national breeding program, Selle Francais have certainly made the greatest historic genetic contributions, there are a surprisingly diverse number of registries and breeding programs represented. The implication is that that greater flexibility in combining bloodlines is one key to future success in breeding for the jumping sports. The German Oldenburg Verband, with its uniquely global strategy of providing full Verband registration passports to eligible, inspected foals from any WBF recognized registry anywhere in the world and the strategic introduction in 2001 of the Oldenburg Springpferde registry to 25 The Oldenburg Horse Oldenburg Stallion Napoli du Ry (2001 Baloubet du Rouet-Silvio I) ridden by French rider Simon Delestre. daughter of VDL Corland (standing in Holland) out of a Ramiro-Z mare (thoroughbred Cottage Son). Another Oldenburg winner, Light On (LordanosLandadel bred by Hans Vahrmann) is Rene Tebbel’s ride in the big division and stands for breeding at his farm producing already the up and coming stallion star Los Angeles. Light On’s pedigree illustrates the Oldenburg jumper breeding strategy: combining the pedigrees of the great Holsteiner producers Lord, Calypso, and Landgraf with the French blood of Alme and Westfalian Fruhling lines to produce a tall, light, agile, and big moving athlete to handle todays complex, huge, and feather-light jumping courses. Finally, Napoli du Ry bred by Gestut Lewitz from a Silvio I mare (mixing the irish blood of Sacramento Song with the Hanoverian producer Graphit(Grande)) and by the three time World Cup winner Baloubet du Rouet (French blood of Galoubet and Corde’s TB father Rantzau). Here in the USA, we also have a strong German Oldenburg jumper breeding program. While the German Oldenburg Verband OS (Oldenburg Springpferde) program is relatively new, the Champion and Reserve Champion stallions of the German FN approved 70-day stallion test in the USA for both 2010 and 2011 stand in this program. Increasingly, USA bred horses and dominating the ranks of the top 100 Young Jumper Championships and Jumper Suitability standings. In 2011, the YJC shows more USA bred five year olds in the top 100 standings than all European countries combined. And that trend is likely to continue and the costs and risks of importing young jumpers from Europe continue to rise incrementally. In today’s competitive global market, serious breeders must be willing to stand their mares up against the very best in the world –regardless of registry - and compete on equal footing both in the breeding shed and the competition ring. focus on elite jumping bloodlines is a great example of what a modern jumping registry will no doubt represent. These factors combined with it’s supportive approach to helping local breeders systematically improve their breeding programs through free access to a knowledgable local Verband representative here in the USA and regular annual visits for consultation and advice by top Verband officers such as Fabian Kühl, Sales Agent for Jumpers, helps the German Oldenburg Breeding Society is a shining light supporting the future of show jumper breeding. And the rising crown’s strategic success shows in the registry’s present day stars. Last month’s “Rolex One to Watch” was young Qatar rider Khaled Ali bin Al Thani finished well at the World Cup Final. Photographer: Frieler We need to be able to seek, through frozen semen imports when appropriate, the best stallions in the world for our individual mares and have our foals judged by international standards with a level playing field. In this context, it is a very small planet. As breeders in the USA, choosing an appropriate registry for your foals can be an important first step towards your commercial and competitive success. The German Oldenburg Verband Oldenburg Springpferde program is well-suited to be the registry of choice for serious jumper breeders for years to come.
