http://bibledevotionfairy.blogspot.com/ “I suppose a fellow can worship on the golf course - but it's almost as unhandy as playing golf in church.” Unknown Purpose of the church If we’re going to talk about being involved in the church we need to start with the why of the church. What was the original purpose of the church and how can we find a church that is trying to live up to that today. Take a little time and brainstorm about your church. What kind of people are welcome there? I Corinthains 12:20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" 22. On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23. and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24. while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25. so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. 27. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30. Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues ? Do all interpret? Hebrews 10:23. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching. What happens at your church besides Sunday services? What makes your church different from the one down the street? Who do you know who would never come to your church...and why? January 1, 2009 Read Acts 2:41-47 (See Page 14) Acts 2:41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added. 42 They were devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Reverential awe came over everyone, and many wonders and miraculous signs came about by the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and held everything in common, 45 and they began selling their property and possessions and distributing the proceeds to everyone, as anyone had need. 46 Every day they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts, breaking bread from house to house, sharing their food with glad and humble hearts, 47 praising God and having the good will of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every day those who were being saved. I Corinthians 12:8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9. to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10. to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. I Corinthians 12: 12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14. Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15. If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16. And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18. But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19. If they were all one part, where would the body be? What did the people in the church do? What was the result? What do you think is the purpose of the church today? Take some time to pray for your church. Like, say, you’re a writer who has a heart for youth, but not the ability to be present at events. Write devotions and then start a blog...just an example I pulled out of the air. :). The Universal Church vs. the Local Church I was reading a blog by a friend of mine last week and she said that she is a “people person doing a hermit job.” Meaning that she loves to be around people but, as a writer, she spends most of her time by herself working. I, however, am very content to stay holed up in the hollow log for days upon end. People just get in the way of what I want to get done today. However, I miss out on things God might have for me by not allowing pesky people to interrupt my day. No matter if you are a hermit or a people person, we are commanded to be a part of the church. In two different forms. The Universal Church and the local church. Have you heard these terms? Let me give you some definitions and then we’ll get into why we should care. According to http://www.gotquestions.org/universal-local-church.html “The local church is a group of believers in Jesus Christ who meet in some particular location on a regular basis. The universal church is made up of all believers in Jesus Christ worldwide.” Now you will sometimes hear people say things like: “I’m a believer, I don’t need to be involved in a local body” or “I worship in nature, I don’t need to get up early on Sunday to do that.” Things like that. We are all the same. We have been given the same Holy Spirit of God no matter out station, skills or school. Next time you get frustrated with someone picture him as a dwelling of the Holy Spirit. Hebrews 10:23-25 What are we not to give up doing? Why? Why do you think some people are giving up this practice, even today? Take some time and pray about your commitment to God and His plans for your involvement in His Church and His church. The church is not here to meet our needs.
