COMPANY BACKGROUNDThe founder of 99 Speedmart, Lee Thiam Wah who was born in 1954 is actually a disabled person. However, the King of Mini Marts as he is fondly known, still managed to build his empire with his own hard-earned savings. He was attacked with a severe case of poliomyelitis which left him a cripple at eight months old. While he was just a little baby, he suffered from polio which caused him to be wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life. Due to his disability, he could only attend school until he was in Standard 6 as it was too far for him to travel on his wheelchair. He came from a poor family and built his company from scratch. Lee’s father was a construction worker and his mother was a small-time hawker so his family did not have a high income. They had to work hard to support him and his 10 siblings so his grandmother took care of him while they worked. Besides that, Mr. Lee managed to open his first grocery store at 23 years old. Being a frugal man, he saved as much money as possible from his business selling snacks and finally, he had enough capital to open his first store known as Pasar Raya Hiap Hoe in Klang. His business flourished, as they were well-known for its good customer service, fair price and variety of goods. After five years in the industry, he wanted a challenge and decided to sell off his store to a relative. He took the money he made from his first store to open his first mini mart. Lee apparently sold his first grocery store for RM88,000 and with this money, he opened his first mini mart in Klang, which was the start of his empire. At first, the mini mart targeted customers. Therefore, Mr. Lee rebranded and changed his ‘mini marts’ name to 99 Speedmart in 2000. Amidst the growing popularity of Pasar Mini 99, 99 Speedmart name was launched with new store opening at Batu Belah, Klang with an intensive expansion strategy geared to help the chain increase market penetration and share. It also represents more than just a rebranding exercise and entails the introduction of a fresh approach in interior as well as exterior set up to enhance the visibility of the shop and the comfort of shopping. After that, At 2002 A new head office and distribution center was completed in October 2002 at a cost of RM6.5 million. This warehouse is a 80,000 square feet facility, complete with centralizes stacking, storage and warehousing capabilities. At 2003 2 years effort in refining the 99 Speedmart concepts produced encouraging results from increasing customer traffic volume and new store openings. This breakthrough convinced Mr. Lee that a new super chain of 99 Speedmart mini markets was ready to take-off. Thus, all the Pasar Mini 99 stores were rebranded as 99 Speedmart. At 2006 99 Speedmart received its first Consumer Choice Award from the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Malaysia. This milestone marking award proved 99 Speedmart’s success in winning customers’ hearts and minds. Moreover, he 2nd distribution centre idea was conceived in late 2007, and completed by July 2008. It was designed to enable the chain to expand its network of mini markets nationwide to reach out to more customers while continuously introducing new and innovative products and services. This warehouse is 110,000 square feet. leveraging on a large chain supported by 2 fully-integrated distribution centres, they work in synergy with an advanced logistic system. 99 Speedmart is able to achieve optimum economies of scale via bulk purchases of goods thereby achieving increased efficiency and reduced costs. On 1st November 2008, 99 Speedmart launched its 100th outlet in Pinggiran Batu Caves. Therefore at 2010 99 Speedmart's 200th outlet in Bandar Baru Selayang, Batu Caves opened on 27th June. At 2011 3rd distribution centre is 118,000 square feet and located in Balakong. It successfully started operation on 14th October. On the same year at 2011 300th outlet opened in Banting Sungai Emas on Christmas Day, 25th December. At 2013 they have achieved more things which is 99 Speedmart's Sabah Branch Office and 4th Distribution Centre launched. This Distribution Centre is 10,144 square feet and located in Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia. It successfully started operation on August. Also at 2013 On 28th December 2013, 99 Speedmart launched its 500th outlet in Telipok Ria, Kota Kinabalu. 99 Speedmart mini market 1st outlet in East Malaysia. Moreover, 99 Speedmart awarded First Consumer Choice of the year 2014 from the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Malaysia. 99 Speedmart's 600th outlet in Saujana Rawang, Selangor opened on 9th November 2014. At 2015 east Malaysia Integrity office and distribution centre expected to be completed in June 2015. This head office is 90,000 square feet and located at Kota Kinabalu. 99 Speedmart Head Quarter under building construction. Expected ready by September 2015. 700th outlet opened in Taman Beringin, KL on 16th August 2015. East Malaysia Integrity Office & Distribution Centre launched. This head office is 90,000 square feet and located at KKIP, Sabah, It successfully started operation on September. Finally, 99 speedmart 6th Distribution Centre is 140,000 square feet and located in Chembong, Negeri Sembilan. It successfully started operation on 28th March 2016. 99 Speedmart Head Quarter was launched. This head quarter is a 13-storey building with 73,679 square feet, which is located in Taman Berkeley, Klang. It successfully started operation on 16th September 2016. 21th January 2017, 99 Speedmart launched its 900th outlet in Muar, Johor. 12th August 2017, 99 Speedmart launched its 1000th outlet in Shah Alam Sek 13, Selangor. I started my career here as a clerk in Trading Department. I like to work in this department. I learnt on do ordering items to warehouse. Also I well facing problems in purchasing department without any guided. By doing this I improved my both Bahasa Malaysia and English very well. Also I well guided how to order items for the new employees on my department. OVERVIEW OF TRAINING During my training period of 4 months at 99 Speedmart.Sdn.Bhd I had carried out multiple tasks and duties in Trading Department. The first duty assigned to me is did checklist about delivery items. Then I was guided by my supervisor the steps of do ordering rice by using excel. On the following days my task was do ordering Ribbon rice to six warehouses. Then the supervisor guides me how to send fax. After that I also have learned the way to answer phone calls from the suppliers and managements. Also i have learned how to transfer the phone calls to the managements. Moreover, the supervisors guide me the steps of do ordering Jasmine rice, Cp foods, Frizz station, Yhl trading to the warehouses. Also I manage to send the ordering to the warehouses the time that given by suppliers. The importance of syllabus covered during study. An extraordinary concealment that I made advance in college was that the course syllabus was like a roadmap with orientation for succeeding in the class. The syllabus that learned from college is very useful when join at a workplace. After that the subject that covered by lecturer during in class is very useful to becoming a good manner employee. Such as personnel development, Cost accounting, Business English, Management Theory. Personal development subject is a great way of keeping our self-motivated. It can also help to clearly define the kind of work that would like to do in the future. Creating a direction for great career path. Business training will help to grow in confidence and be more decisive with any choices you make. This confidence can also be reflected skills and attributes. Business and personal development training certification looks great on a CV and can improve chances of progressing within a business or if decide to look for a job elsewhere. This training will improve communication, problem solving and planning skills. This can be utilized when discussing personal and business goals or objectives with seniority. Training will help an individual understand which way they work or learn best. This can then be transferred into their everyday life and work. Moreover cost accounting also will help during work in workplace such as Compute costs of service and facilitate cost reduction. Develop an internal reporting system for decision making that cuts costs in the future. Categorize cost classifications based on function such as activities, products and processes. Collect, analyze, summarize and evaluate various alternative courses of action. Complete gross margin analyses related to a company's products, inventory and overall value. Investigate variances in financial records. Establish inventory value as it changes with market fluctuations. After that the ability to use English in the workplace has a number of benefits including, Helping the company to succeed, building trust with colleagues and clients, building and improving international relationships, enhancing your skill-set and commanding a higher salary and enhancing international relationships through cultural understanding. The ability to communicate in English is a huge asset to many companies and organizations including those who do not use English as an official language. Companies who conduct business internationally are likely to be engaging with people who speak English as a first or second language on a regular basis making the ability to use English in the workplace a very valuable skill. A good knowledge of English allows you to communicate effectively with international clients, helping them to trust our self and the organization resulting in strong and lasting business relationships. People who use English for their work on a daily basis need to be able to use English for a variety of purposes including in meetings and negotiations, for managing, writing reports, giving presentations and in social situations. Being able to communicate and negotiate successfully with clients who speak English makes your skill-set more attractive to companies who conduct business internationally meaning employees who speak English can often command higher salaries. Furthermore, Management theory subject will help in working place such as developed in response to the need to account for employee behavior and motivation. After that, Scientific Management Theory is made up of four major principles, scientific selection of employees the development of true science, the employee’s scientific education and development, as well as the close relationship between management and employees. According to Fredrick Taylor, the focal point of scientific management is concentrated on the unlinking of the conception from execution. In the same way, scientific management is described as the refinement of a management technique of the division of labor that has been in existence; in which workers are rewarded and also punished. The approach to which workers perform their tasks should be carefully studied, the informal job knowledge workers have possessed overtime should be gathered, and ways of tasks improvement should be experimented. Every new method of performing tasks should be codified into well-structured rules as well as standard operating procedures. Workers should be carefully selected in order for them to possess the capabilities and skills required by any task, and they should be trained to carry out task matching the prevailing procedures and rules. Tasks must be fairly and acceptably developed to a level of realistic performance, and a secured payment system should be established to reward good performance beyond his acceptance level. 6.Comments And Critics The Advantages of working at 99 speedmart are can learn many new things and also get a trust to hold such a big responsibilities. Best experience to know how to communicate with others . This experience can help me future working ability. working environment is good and convenience. New worker guided well by senior. Get increase communication with workers and supplier. It will increase communication skill. Also have learnt new things negotiable employer, friendly customers, good working environment. Easy to share the problem in the workplace with manager. Career advancement and oppurtunity of career growth Disadvantages are the salary is too low for industry and working day was 6 days per week, zstaff turnover too high. work load not compatible with salary. The lack of empowerment cause the limitation of time for rest day, sometimes lead to the in quality works. Get stress sometimes when doing work t.he time to work is really long and sometimes there is no a rest day in a week. Therefore, I always see that the workers will always change and other workers will come to replace it. SUGGESTION / RECOMMENDATION I hope that this company will increase the salary. I also hope that this company consider to pay more as we often go to places but never get paid or claim for that. Conclusion My overall conclusion on the 4 months training period at 99 Speedmart.Sdn.Bhd was very challenging .I also felt that my confidence in facing new people and environment had increased a lot. Working in trading department .had given me a lot of different experiences. I have been able to meet and network with so many people that I am sure will be able to help me with opportunities in the future. One main thing that I have learned through this internship is time management skills as well as self-motivation. From this internship and time management I had to learn how to motivate myself through being in the office for so many hours. Both my head of departments and supervisors are very kind and patient in teaching and guiding me in doing the job assigned. I have learnt a lot of skills here such as steps to order differents variety of rice to warehouses .Also I had learned how to do checklist about delivery products. By working here I get to know more about corporate world and working life. It was really good to have the opportunity to work there as everyone in that branch is really fun and they always make sure that everyday we will come with a happy and smiling faces.
