Task 1 – Pre-reading activities: a) A myth is a made up story (about an imaginary person or thing) that may try to explain a natural phenomena. Aboriginal myths help to retain traditions and beliefs. Read some Dreaming stories to explore what they are about. b) HOMEWORK: Internet exploration. Read through the information on the following websites and write down 5 interesting points from each. Rule up pages for a reading log. You will need 2 columns Reading activities: a) Take note of the development of the plot as the story is told through detailed chapter summaries. b) Maintain a glossary of terms that are new to you – and define them. A minimum of 20 overall. c) Create a character mind map that shows the relationships between the main characters of the text. d) Complete the chapter questions as you read through the novel. Read Ch. 9 + 10 (to P.98) in class. Students continue Task 2, and begin Task 3. Homework to read to end of Ch.15 (p.145). Read Ch. 15, 16, 17 in class to complete novel reading. Re-write the plot in order of the true sequence of events. b) Using the order of events you have just uncovered draw an emotional timeline that details the ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ of Dougy’s feelings through the novel. Task 5 Personal response a) Think of a time when you have been caught in a tight situation. b) Explain the situation, the actions that led up to it, how you handled it, and other people’s reactions. Task 6 Students prepare oral presentation Oral Activity Choose one of the following tasks for an oral presentation. This may be completed individually or in groups of up to four people. Your presentation should last approximately two minutes + thirty seconds for each member of your group. • The indigenous people of Australia have been treated poorly. Outline some of the steps that may be taken towards Reconciliation. • Role-play the events in the town hall on the night of Gracey’s celebration party.
