We know a lot about the energetics for carbon fixation triggered by solar radiation, that is, photosynthesis. Parallelly important, but relatively unknown processes are bio-geochemistry in the deep ocean, where highly efficient carbon fixation is sustained by reductive energy stored in the Earth’s crust. Herein, based on recent findings of electrical current generation across a black smoker hydrothermal vent, together with thermoelectrical conversion via chimney minerals, I will present the new energetic underpinnings of solar-independent carbon fixation.
