Instead of using soft, rubber balls, the game was actually played with large rocks or putrefied matter, and it was used as an intense work out for the tribes, where each competitor would attempt to hit their opponent with the rock to injury or incapacitate them. Once a player was hit, they would attempt to be pelted by further rocks to finish them off. It would be the responsibility of the team mates of the fallen competitor to try and defend him and force the attackers off with their own rocks. This would said to be a great way to encourage the tribesman to work together during skirmishes against other tribes, working to take out the weak and protect their own. A missionary, by the name of Dr James H. Carlisle saw what was happening and was intrigued by the agility and ruthlessness of the tribal men , as well as by the solidarity and heart they were showing. He spent many hours watching the men, and became besotted with the ritual that he saw on a daily basis. When he made his way back to England, via Europe, he showed some of his pupils what he had seen. The European men that tried what Carlisle was telling them found they didn’t have the natural agility or accuracy to dodge or throw, and with Dr Carlisle continuously moving on, he was not able to encourage the people he spoke to about the sport to carry it on. It was only when he returned to his teachings at St. Mary’s College in Norfolk, that he was able to transform the vicious training in to an all-inclusive game. He changed the rock and petrified matter for a leather ball, which was still hard but not dangerously so. The sport was played on an open field with no restrictions as to where players were able to go, and was played as if a game of chess or war, with players moving strategically to try and trap an opponent. A player was only out from the game when they were knocked to the floor by the continuous blows of the ball. Players would look to bat the ball away with their hands, in an effort to deflect the power away from them. This was played for the next century in much the same way, with only minor variations. In 1884, St. Mary’s College played host to a number of their colleagues from Yale University. Included within that party was Phillip Ferguson. Philip Ferguson is generally regarded as the person most responsible for taking dodgeball over to America and popularising it. He saw the boys of St. Mary’s College playing and he hit upon an idea for the game that would make it quicker and faster. He brought in the idea of playing within a set area, with teams on either side of the pitch. Once the sport made it back across the pond to America, it was there that the details of the sport we know today were fleshed out. 1905 saw the first official rules drawn up, which included the rules regarding players coming in after a catch and being hit once and you were out. With the colleges across America playing each other, it enabled the sport to spread like wildfire. News of this emerging sport made its way back to England, and the American popularised rules became the norm for which all dodgeball matches were played. Schools up and down the country would play for fun, but it was the film of the sport in 2004 that brought the whole world’s attention to the sport. The only place that the original sport is played is St. Marys College, when they host their Yale brethren for a match, every 4 years, to honour the founding fathers of the sport, and the African innovators. Dodgeball: In India [SCOPE] Dodgeball in India is played by students in schools primarily. One of the most interesting aspect to it unlike popular sports like Cricket/Football, it is a gender inclusive sport i.e both Boys & Girls can play together. But sadly not many Education boards recognize Dodgeball as a competitive sport played in tournaments. This has been the reason why inspite of popularity with kids this has never emerged out like any other sports. One more reason I may add would Dodgeball is very adrenaline pumping game, due to which people do get carried away while throwing ball at others to get them out. Intensity makes it difficult for the fairer sex to include themselves completely as they sometimes can get disconnected or disoriented with the game. Searching through Google, Facebook and Twitter has revealed that Dodgeball is very popular among residents in USA. Indian context however have turned up to a dead end. Rationale We took up Dodgeball as sport of our choice as it is the youth who plays it more often than other. It is also gender inclusive, which can be highlighted. Also our idea would be to play it across different campuses across the country which would make it very innovative and popular. There are many College campuses in country whose beautiful architecture is yet to be explored by many of those around the country. Covering such an event would definitely get some eyeballs as it is not some reality based show like Roadies etc. which is totally scripted. We can set up dodgeball courts with few polymer rubber mats and an rubber based boundary around it. Since it would be a crowd-puller among students, we have to take permission only for 1st year. Next year, campuses would call upon thmeselves to host event, which would cut out rental and organizing costs. About the Game Object Of The Game The main objective in dodgeball is to eliminate all members of the opposing team by throwing the ball at them. Plays must dodge the ball to remain in the game and the team who manages to eliminate all of their opponent’s first are deemed the winners. Players There will be a team of 20 players out of which 10 will play with rolling substitutions across the game. A lot will depend on the space available to play the game and the overall pool of player available. College or School leagues or regulated games will have a set number of players, which again will differ from each league. Format , Scoring & Duration We will be primarily playing One ball dodgeball where object is to hit as many opposing players as you want. There will be a prescribed number of hits allotted to each of the players and after which you will be declared out of the game. Many consider it to be of benefit to play with an odd number of dodgeballs so there is always scope for a team to be on the offensive. The game commences with the opening rush. At toss itself the first throw and side are selected. Team with the first throw should remained grouped between a circle whereas rest opposing players can spread across the whole playing area. Uniforms is to be worn as a compulsion to differentiate two different team players. It would be 30 points, 5- set game. Whosoever reaches 30 points first wins the set. 3 Wins would win the game. 20 Minutes per game with 5 quarters. Winning The Game The game is over when all of the players on one team are eliminated, resulting in the other team winning the game. If both teams still have members at the end of an allotted amount of time, the winning team will be the one with most players. If this still results in deadlock, overtime can be played. Rules          The number of players, number of balls, size of court and length of game can be determined by the organizers.. Players must remain within the court at all times, unless collecting dead balls. Players are allowed to leave the court to collect balls but they are not allowed to throw the ball until they are back within the court. If a player leaves the court for any other purpose or they throw a ball from outside the court, they are eliminated. The rules regarding headshots can be decided upon personal preference or by order of an official body. Some games will see the throwing player eliminated if an opponent is stuck on the head, some games will see the player struck on the head eliminated. Players struck with a ball that is then caught before it becomes dead are eliminated. A player shouldn't get hit 10 times in course of the game, if he/she gets hit he would be shown Red card and suspended for the game. That's where rolling substitutions come in place. Thus the captain can save his leading players with his/her strategy .Throwing team shouldn't pass more than 5 times. If they exceed 5 times, referee would caution the team. A team should be cautioned more than 5 times or the opposing team would get 5 Points penalty. Targeting a specific player is prohibited. i.e a Player cannot hit same player consecutive times. This would lead into heightened aggressiveness and ultimately fairness of the game loses. The player would be warned by referee twice, before being red carded. Safety equipments such as helmets and body armours are needed to be worn by players at all time. No exceptions are there for this rule. Equipments  Helmets: Protects heads from really venomous throws. Players should wear this all time.  Kneepads & Elbow pads: Basically protects the players from scratching and cushioning bad falls easily.  Safety Goggles (Optional): Bespectacled players can use this equipment to their advantage  Body Armour: This would help the player to absorb throws, bunts, punches and other body blows  Dodgeball: Unlike regular dodgeball this ball would be roughly the size of a baseball. Soft and made of rubber, it would be fast through air, giving it high velocity during throws.  Rubber Mats: These mats would be kept on the field and near the edges of the arena to minimize any injuries  Referee Equipments: Basic items which includes whistles, Cards (Red & Yellow), Notepad.  Barricade Tape: This tape is used seal off the playing area so that players can mark their boundaries and audience can stay off it.  Go-Pro Camera's: It is available on rental basis, this can be used not in group stages but knock-out stages thus reducing the budget Venues & Infrastructure  IIM Ahmedabad  IMT Nagpur  IMT Ghaziabad  NMIMS Mumbai  GIM Goa  IIM Kozhikode  MDI Gurgaon    All IITs All NITs Great Lakes Chennai
