While donations are expected to climb closer to the Dec. 15 deadline, a growing concern of fracturing among the community is spreading some doubt about the accumulation of this year’s target – and last year’s final count – of 33,000 items. “I know that all the groups are feeling some effect this year, there’s something going on that isn’t real ob- Coat program vious,” said Craig Stone, chairperson for the Strathmore launched and Wheatland County Christmas Hamper Society. “There is a tremendous amount of outside com- munity projects, that’s one thing. I will advise the public of what positions will be held by whom as soon as it has been determined. I was appalled about an incident that took place at our Remembrance Day Ceremony. One of our Veterans was wearing a medal, pinned on by his dear, since departed wife, which he proudly wore for his stint in Vietnam. Someone went up to our Veteran and tore the medal off of his jacket, stating it had no place in Canada! He then left, with the medal. Comrades, nobody has the right to do this to anyone!! A Veteran is a Veteran, whether or not you agree with the war he fought in! To my way of thinking, there is no war that has ever been popular, not Korea, not Vietnam, not World War II nor World War I! Yet, our men and women fought for us regardless of where and when! They received medals for what they did, for their bravery and sacrifice, and have every right to wear them proudly on their uniforms! For someone to walk over to rip a medal from their jackets, simply because he did not agree with the war, a medal earned for their service, is unforgiveable!! This is not our deci- sion to make, ever! I don’t know if the medal was, heaven forbid, thrown away or not. If it wasn’t, I would expect that it be brought to the Legion, with or without a letter of apology, no questions asked. We will then have the honour of returning it to our deserving Veteran and make his Christmas a little happier. After doing the wrong thing, please make it right. Thank you! A pair of former coworkers have teamed up behind the bench of the Hawks this season. Joe Lapage has returned to the coaching chair after leaving Holy Cross Collegiate as their principal nine years ago. Back in the day, he used to coach the senior girls’ program. He was also responsible for hiring the senior boys coach at the time. “I hired Michelle to teach a long time ago. So it was kind of funny and a role-reversal type of way that she asked me to come help out and coach this season,” said Lapage. “For me, it’s all about the relationships you build with the team and we have some great girls on the team this year.” Last year’s head coach, Brad Everett, is helping out the ju- nior varsity boys program this year.
