With The Intention of Promoting The System of Ayurveda And Traditional Medicine Inherited From Ancient Times, A College of Ayurveva Was Initiated By The Well – Wishers of Ayurveda on The 10 th of June, 1929 With The Patronage of The Government. It Was Than Named The Government College of Indigenous Medicine And The System of Ayurveda / Siddha / Unani Were Taught. While The Administrative Affairs of The College Were First Carried Out By An Advisory Board of Indigenous Medicine And Later It Was Administered Under The Statutory Powers of The Ayurveda College And Hospital Board Act No. 31 of 1961. On The 2 nd of April 1977, It Was Taken over By The University of Sri Lanka Under Powers of The University Act No 01 – Of 1972. Since then this became the Institute of Ayurveda Medicine. Then it came to be the Institute of Indigenous Medicine ( IIM ) of the University of Colombo in 1980. This programme first initiated in 1929 was later amended in the years 1934, 1941 and again in 1961, 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1974. Further the diploma certificate awarded by this institute was recognized by the Indian ayurvedic Act as a basic qualification in pursuing post graduate studies in Ayurveda in Indian Universities. From her inception, the Borella Ayurveda Hospital became the teaching Hospital of the Institute. After the take over of the Institute of Indigenous Medicine by the University, the administration of the teaching hospital came under the education and hospital board of the department of Ayurveda and treatment responsibilities for teaching purpose of the students at the teaching hospital were carried out under the direct supervision of the academic staff of the Institute of Indigenous Medicine. With the implemention of the Act No 31 of 1961, the diploma awarded under D.I.M.S. was amended as D.A.M.S. after 1963. Since 1982, the B.A.M.S. has been in effect as an ongoing programme. 01. Current status and proposed New trends. This is the first and foremost hither to established Institute amongst the other University affiliated Institutes. The academic staff serving in the Institute of Indigenous Medicine at present have obtained their first degree in this institute and their post graduate degrees either nationally or internationally. From inception, the Ayurvedic system of Education offered at the IIM was carried out in comparison with modern science. An amended curriculum therefore is a timely necessity to produce more competent Ayurvedic graduate doctors, thereby ensuring a better public service fostering the Ayurveda and traditional concepts in light of modern technology. Page 4 02. Aims and objectives of the Institute The Ayurvedic graduates of this Institute : 01. Should posses disseminate knowledge, skills and attitudes of medical sciences based on Ayurveda and Traditional Medicines. 02. Be able to offer better health services to the public preserving the salient characteristics of Ayurveda and Traditional system of Medicine within the framework of national health system to suit the needs of the present society. 03. Should possess knowledge, skills and attitudes of primary health care and impart those for the well – being of society. 04. Be able to manufacture the traditional medicine, and get the maximum use of traditional medicine and resources. 05. Be able to identify and control the medical emergencies and provide emergency treatment and act accordingly to refer the patients for treatment. 06. Be able to follow the prescribed orders in legal medicine, necessary in the medical profession. 07. Should possess knowledge and the ability to carry out researches on Ayurveda and indigenous system of medicine. 03. Qualifications for admission. Should possess all the qualifications undermentioned.\ Educational Qualifications : Should have passed G.C.E. ( Advance level ) subjects in the Bio – science stream and should possess the criteria recommended by the University Grants commission. Age : Should have completed 17 years of age on the 1 st of October in the year of admission. The students entering for the degree should not suffer from mental or physical disability that may hinder the duties of a doctor. All the students who will be admitted to the study course are directed to the medical examination conducted by the institute. Page 5 Medium of Teaching Medium of Teaching is sinhala. English and Sanskrit are used where necessary. Duration of the Course. The degree programme is a five – year , fulltime course. The five – year programme will be completed in four stages as given below. Stage One 12 months Stage Two 12 months Stage Three 18 months Stage Four 18 months This programme will be launched and continued with the batch of students entering the institute in year 2000. This programme is liable to be amended from time to time. The decisions taken by the senate of the Colombo University will be the final with regard to any such amendments, or any other problems arising in the implementation of the programme. 04.
