ST. JOACHIM (Marrero): Breakfast with Santa for children ages 10 and under will take place in the Parish Life Center Dec. 10 at 9 a.m. Parents are asked to bring a wrapped gift, costing between $5 and $10, tagged with their child’s name for distribution by Santa Claus. Participants are also asked to donate hygiene items for a collection that will be forwarded to American troops overseas. ST. JOAN OF ARC (LaPlace): The St. Joan of Arc Christmas Celebration, featuring a living nativity and performances by the school band and the children’s choir, will take place Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Family Life Center… A Penance Service will follow the 5:30 p.m. Mass on Dec. 20… The CYO welcomes youth ministers Joey and Adele Schweitzer. Daughter of Divine Providence Sister Pier Carla Barone, formerly at St. Mark in Chalmette, will assist at the school as liturgy coordinator and as DRE for the parish. ST. JOAN OF ARC (New Orleans): Marie Brulé Garibaldi, a mother of nine children and active volunteer in local Catholic and civic organizations for years, recently died at age 90 in Minnesota, where she had been evacuated due to the hurricane. A graduate of Corpus Christi Grammar School and McDonogh 35 High School, she was the first African-American recipient of the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ Regina Matrum (Mother of the Year) Award. She was named Grand Lady of the Knights of Peter Claver at St. Joan of Arc as well as a member of the Sodality and Altar Society. She also served as president of St. Joan of Arc School’s Parent Teachers Association and was chair of the church’s bazaar… The school, which is combining with Our Lady of Lourdes, has 107 students, and more are expected to enroll in January. ST. JOHN BOSCO (Harvey): There will be a living nativity following the 5 p.m. Mass on Dec. 17. S T. J O H N O F T H E C R O S S (Lacombe): The annual Angel Tree is now set up at the rear of the church. Each paper angel ornament has a child’s age and gender. Parishioners may take one (or more) of these ornaments, buy a gift, wrap it, take the paper angel to the box and return it to the church. This year Father Gil Martin, pastor, hopes to distribute 350 gifts… A special one-hour prayer service for the Immaculate Conception/Mystical Rose will be held Dec. 8 at noon. This service is for priests and religious… Vigil Mass on Saturday is celebrated at 4:30 p.m. Sunday Masses are at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST (Folsom): Father William Bilinsky will conduct a parish mission Dec. 12-16 beginning at 7:30 p.m. with the celebration of Mass. A penance service, incorporated into the mission, will be held on Dec. 16. ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST (Paradis): A Christmas party for adult parishioners will take place in the Parish Hall Dec. 9 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. S T. J O S E P H T H E W O R K E R (Marrero): The parish will host a Westbank Deanery penance service Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. ST. MARK (Ama): The parish will hold a New Year’s Eve party for parishioners from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Father Cote Center. There will be a raffle, food and beverages and a disc jockey. Advance tickets are $15 per couple; admission is $20 at the door. ST. JULIAN EYMARD: The parish is having a Christmas party Dec. 17 in the church cafeteria from 7 to 11 p.m. There will be drinks, wine, food and music by the City Boys band. DOMINIC: The first post-Katrina Mass inside St. Dominic Church, celebrated on Nov. 27, was attended by 1,300 parishioners. A reception followed in the schoolyard. Pastor Dominican Father Donald Dvorak announced that there will be a regular Sunday Mass at 10:30 a.m. for the time being… The parish’s Supper and Substance group will meet Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Albert the Great Student Center on the campus of Southeastern University in Hammond… The Mothers’ Club will hold its Christmas Luncheon at the Loews Hotel Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. ST. EDWARD THE CONFESSOR (Metairie): The Knights of Columbus will hold a Blood Drive Dec. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the cafeteria. The KC will also sponsor a Turkey Fry Dec. 17. Ten-pound average turkeys, priced at $35 each, may be ordered and paid for in advance by calling 228-3270 or 442-3536… Students will perform at Celebration in the Oaks on Dec. 13 at 6 p.m… Christmas Caroling Under the Pavilion will take place Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. S T. E L I ZABETH ANN SETON (Kenner): Masses are once again being celebrated in the church, which has a new roof and flooring. The temporary Mass schedule is as follows: vigil at 4 p.m.; Sunday Masses at 8 and 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. ST. FRANCES CABRINI: The water level inside the church reached the base of the elevated marble altar. ST. FRANCIS XAVIER (Metairie): Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes will be the main celebrant at the 4 p.m. vigil Mass Dec. 10 in the church to mark the 80th anniversary of the school. A reception will follow in the gym, with lots of school memorabilia. Deacon Ed Coudrain will also be honored for 25 years of service to the church. ST. GENEVIEVE (Slidell): Masses are on Saturday (vigil) at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 9 and 11 a.m. in the Parish Hall…. The parish office is not yet operational, but messages are being received for St. Genevieve parish by Renee Lemoine at St. Margaret Mary parish. St. Genevieve parishioners may leave a message at (985) 643-6124. ST. GERTRUDE (Des Allemands): The parish’s traditional Christmas Play is slated for Dec. 16 and 17 at 7 p.m. in the church. The final performance will be followed by a Christmas Tree blessing in the church and a social inside the Father Mac Community Center. ST. HENRY: A “Welcome Back Block Party” will be held on Dec. 10 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall. On hand at the party will be representatives from Entergy, the Mayor’s Office, the Sewerage and Water Board, Bell-South, the Sanitation Department and Cox Cable, the latter which will provide hot dogs and soft drinks. City Council representatives Oliver Thomas and Reneé Gill Pratt are also scheduled to attend.
