Pipes made of polyethyleneVersion 4.1 In 1988, Revaho started producing PE pipes at Naff to meet the demand for quality pipes for horticulture, and drip irrigation in particular. Stricter requirements with respect to raw materials, composition, production and inspection have ultimately resulted in a quality which guarantees a reliable and durable product. Logical steps in this development were certification by KIWA (1993) and GASTEC (1995). Naff still produces top quality PE pipes in sizes 3-250 mm, in a variety of lengths and pressure classes. Other lengths and/or sizes are available on request. Just ask our sales department. General Pipes have been used for ages in road construction, horticulture, fruit culture, industry, etc. Concrete, PVC and steel are well-known materials used for these pipes. Over the past few decades, however, polyethylene has become an increasingly popular material for the production of pipes. The reason for choosing polyethylene is that it is evolving significantly and its quality is therefore increasingly improving. Examples of existing types are PE 40, PE 63, PE 80, PE 100 and even PE 125 is expected to be introduced. Popular names are LDPE, MDPE, HDPE and ZPE. These are more general terms, however, which prove nothing about the strength of a polyethylene as opposed to terms such as PE 40, PE 63, PE 80 and PE 100. Naff’s production of pipes is based on the BRL-K533-03 (KIWA) and NEN-EN-1555-2 standards. Polyethylene in various strengths The difference between PE 40, PE 63, PE 80 and PE 100 is found in the ultimate design stress, on the basis of which the continuous working pressure at 20ºC can be determined. Assuming an unchanged dimension of the pipe at 20°C, a pipe made of PE 100 will be able to resist 25% more pressure than a pipe made of PE 80. In brief, PE 40 may be considered the weakest material and PE 100 the strongest. Various types of polyethylene are therefore used, depending on the applications. Quality comes first Revaho and Naff consider quality of paramount importance. The goods produced must comply with strict requirements. Several inspections are held in order to guarantee the quality. Naff has a modern laboratory with all the equipment needed to test the products according to the requirements. Naff’s main standard inspections are: - Inspection of incoming materials: the materials are tested upon delivery in order to determine whether they comply with the requirements and, consequently, whether they can be used for production. - Production inspection by the operators: during the production process, the operators monitor the production parameters. - Laboratory tests: random tests during the production process provide extra certainty about the quality of the pipe produced. - Laboratory release tests: after production, all produced orders are tested for bursting pressure [EN-921], tensile strength [ISO-6259], density [ISO-1183], stress-cracking [ISO-8796 and ASAE S435], dimensions and appearance [NEN-EN-1555-2 and BRL-K533-03]. These tests guarantee the supply of a constant and reliable quality which is the basis of Naff’s success. 2.1 M A K I N G W W A O T E R R K KIWA and GASTEC QA certificates Version 4.1 Naff obtained the KIWA certificate in 1993 and the GASTEC QA test requirements No. 8 certificate in 1998. The standards to be complied with are BRL K533-03 for KIWA and NEN-EN-1555 for GASTEC QA. Naff has obtained KIWA certification for PE 40 and PE 80 (PE 100 mid-2005) and the GASTEC QA certificate for PE 80. Both authorities check whether Naff complies with the above-mentioned standards. Several times per year, a KIWA and/or GASTEC QA auditor comes to check the documentation and measuring results. Auditors check at random, inspecting pipes taken from stock and comparing them with the values established by Naff. The KIWA and GASTEC QA laboratories also carry out various checks, such as pressure tests on pipes produced by Naff. Over the years, a quality management system has been developed which guarantees reproducibility of the quality and which complies with the KIWA and GASTEC QA requirements. An important fact is that even all non-certified products made by Naff are tested and dealt with according to the same strict standards. Stripes on PE pipes As of 2005, KIWA-approved pipes for drinking water distribution must be striped blue. This obligation applies to KIWA-approved pipes made of PE 40, PE 80 and PE 100. A KIWA-approved pipe made of PE 100 may also be uniformly blue, though this is not compulsory. Pipes for gas distribution (PE 80 or PE 100) must be KIWA-GAS or GASTEC QA approved pipes in black, black with yellow stripes, or uniformly yellow. In all probability, the pipes produced for gas distribution will be required to be black with yellow stripes or uniformly yellow in the future. Traceability All production runs are given a unique number. This unique number is printed on the pipe and is also used on all production and test forms for the order concerned. All data is stored according to this number and is saved for 10 years. In the event of complaints, the production history can be traced on the basis of the order number. Joints for polyethylene Well-known techniques for joining polyethylene pipes are: - Electric welding (see ELGEF-Plus) - Butt welding - Couplings (see Alprene or quick coupling system) - Saddles (see Alprene) - Flanged joints (see ELGEF-Plus and VDL). 1. 2.2 M A K I N G W W A O T E R R K Polyethylene is easily recyclable and it is therefore environment friendly. -non-certified LDPE: black LDPE pipes and hoses for transport of water in agriculture. but the great advantage is that the material is stronger so that a thinner wall can be used while the pressure class remains unchanged. extra safety too.1 Polyethylene is a durable material: it is tough.3 cm/100m.
