CASE STUDY ROARING DRAGON HOTELABSTRACT: This paper mainly introduces the concept based on guanxi negligence through formerly Chinese managed hotel by a western based international hotel management company. It mainly covers the cultural conflict that has occurred for employees trying to adapt the former Chinese relationship based methods of hotel management to that of the more market oriented, Management Company. The conclusions mainly highlight cultural characteristics and issues that companies are taking over SOEs, are advised to be aware of. “Roaring Dragon Hotel” is a three-star hotel that is located in the southwest part of china. In this case we mainly focus on the challenge involved with redundancy, communication, cultural sensitivity, strategic planning and developing strategy. In the second half of 1999 and international management company set about transforming the culture within the hotel from a Chinese hotel that was relationship based environment to a modern market oriented organization. Methodology: During the months of May to December 1999, June to July, 2001, and November to December 2002, research on guanxi was carried out at four-star hotel (i.e. is Roaring Dragon Hotel).The hotel has employed more than 670 people. Interviews were recorded with 35 middle and senior managers from the hotel and a group of 11 officials, businessmen from this environment. 15 participants were interviewed on more than one occasion across the three research periods. Unattributed, direct quotes used throughout this manuscript are taken from verbal transcripts of these interviewees. Moreover, a 65-item written survey was conducted with hotel staff the week before the takeover and again three months after the takeover. 439 completed the first survey and 144 the second. Most of these new hotels were operated by international management corporations and they enjoyed in taking advantage of recruiting their employees based on factors like appearance. it may be son or daughter legally had right to secure a position as an replacement in the SOE. Because the Roaring Dragon was the only four-star hotel in the city for more than thirty five years there have not been any problem faced by any customer of that hotel. In order to maintain its relationship the hotels managers would regularly invite officials to dinner and to enjoy the gifts and glasses displayed by the Roaring Dragon Logo. when an senior applicant retires or passed away then any of their family member. Because the Roaring Dragon was the only four-star hotel in the city for more than thirty . There were around four new five-star hotels. one of them was. Moreover Roaring Dragon‟s recruitment policy has been very relaxed. New competitors hired international recruiting firms so as to sort out the applicants and hire only those applicants that are eligible for the required position. A recommendation to the applications was an adding point for their hiring process. Agencies and competition: The Roaring Dragon Hotel‟s relationship with the provincial government was very important. Emerging Competition. efficiency and ability and the management was not so concerned about the guanxi relationships. The ministers at the hotel were the only representatives who could afford to stay at the Roaring Dragon. HR Managers with good guanxi were able to find relations and members of their guanxiwang without any trouble. as there was more number of employees at the hotel. and not report for work again. This change in policy and procedures at hotel caused upheavels in organizational culture. The four Mondays: On first Monday of November. Moreover due to more number of competitors in the market the hotel was some problem. The Roaring Dragon‟s method of service delivery and style of administration were changing beyond recognition. Demolition was already behind schedule and the relationship between management from Erhi T. There was fear among many of „the old staff that they would not be able to adapt‟ to Nothill‟s new management style. Several senior managers commented that if the Chinese managers had been in charge of the redundancy process. the Roaring Dragon Limited.five years there have not been any problem faced by any customer of that hotel. they would have handled . some of them may damage or steal equipment before they left. many murmured and voiced their complaints. So most the government employees who could earlier not afford to stay at Roaring Dragon Hotel were now but having more number of choices and see that which hotel is offering the modern and well-furnished facilities and services to its customers and that to with a regular price. all managers and supervisors now had to work an eight-hour day and the opportunity to take long tea breaks or conduct private business during normal working hours was eliminated. Fortune believed business would only start to recover from 2002 onwards after the completion of the new wing. No reason was offered as to why these „employees were no longer required nor were they thanked for their years of service. There was no prior warning given to these employees. Leaving the hotel site was no longer easy as Nothill managers made sure that everyone trained hard whilst they were being assessed. as Nothill feared that if given advanced notice. a group of workers were given their redundancy payouts late in the afternoon. the provincial government and Nothill were not developing well. For those who had given may years of service to hotel. it contrasted significantly to the „Chinese‟ way of dealing with people. Suddenly their dream had been taken away. Many of the employees make redundant had hoped to continue working at the hotel for a long time. What transpired was a market driven action by Nothill. What would their families think? Would they ask why will you not go to work tomorrow? „What did you do to be asked to leave? What would our families and friends think of this? Conclusion: . However. there was „no job tomorrow‟ and there was the serious issue of their loss of face to contend with.if differently.
