Visitors to our area from all over the country lined up early behind the Perry’s Victory Visitor’s Center to get their stamps and merchandise from the U.S. Postal Service. The Immaculate Conception Parish Bell Choir from Port Clinton played a musical prelude and accompaniment in the ceremony. Dr. Joshua D. Colin, Vice President, Area Operations for the Eastern Area United States Postal Service said it was great to bring national attention to American history with the dedication of the stamp. The stamp released on Tuesday was the second in a series commemorating the War of 1812. “As the stamps begin their journey,” Dr. Colin said, “they’ll remind everyone of the Battle of Lake Erie.” The Battle of Lake Erie commemorative stamp designed by Greg Breeding Wreath Laying Ceremony aboard the Biscayne Bay BY JASMINE CUPP The Battle of Lake Erie is called a forgotten victory by some, but after the happenings in our area over the last two weeks it’s safe to say that here this history is not forgotten. On Tuesday, Sept. 10, The Jet Express, Goodtime, Denis Sullivan, Biscayne Bay and the Niagara headed towards the battle site in Lake Erie where many men gave their lives for their countries. On the Biscayne Bay Coast Guard cutter, four wreaths were laid to represent the four vessels lost in the war, USS Somer, USS Ariel, HMS Lady Prevost and HMS Hunter. Steve Roberts of the National Park Service recounted the events of the battle as the Biscayne Bay made its way to the battle site. Other speakers included Navy, Coast Guard and Newfoundland Royal Regiment members. There was also a representative of the native people who lost their lives in the battle. On the Biscayne Bay this representative was Jamie Oxendine. When he spoke he blessed the boat, the passengers and the people who lost their lives in the battle. At the end of the ceremony the Niagara fired four shots, representing the final shots fired onto the British fleet. Taps played and passengers bowed their head to pay their respects. After the shots were fired the Biscayne Bay circled around to see the commemorative buoy that has been placed at the coordinates in the lake where the Battle of Lake Erie took place, 41-44-50.00 N, 083-02-00.00 W. The Perry Group, a group who helped plan the bicentennial celebrations, also known as the Friends of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, works along with the National Park Service to celebrate the long lasting peace amongst the three nations that were involved in the Battle of Lake Erie, Great Britain, Canada and the United States. Even though the bicentennial events are over for the year, the Perry Group is still planning. Kay Drake of the Perry Group said the group is in talks for raising money to build a storage facility for Perry’s longboat and cannon. For more information on the bicentennial, visit www.battleoflakeerie-bicentennial.com. For more information on or to join the Perry Group, visit www.theperrygroup.org. Real estate and classified ads close Monday by noon and retail ads close Monday by 4 p.m. www.thebeacon.net Guest Editorial BY MIKE SNIDER, PORT CLINTON CITY COUNCILMAN Every small community in America is experiencing many of the same issues as PC. Likewise, each small community has something at its disposal that it can utilize to make itself a better community. Waterworks Park is a perfect example of something we have that has been used again and again to make Port Clinton better. Not because of what it is today but the fact that over the past 175 years the area we know today as Water Works Park has itself been transformed repeatedly to meet the ever changing needs of the citizens of this community. I wonder if in the 1800s there were signs in yards that read “SAVE THE PORTAGE RIVER”. Had the river not been diverted; had the swamp that was left never been filled; had the two ball field never been installed; had the tennis court and shuffleboard courts never been built; had the skate park never transformed from the tennis/basketball court; had the cinder parking area never been paved; had the sand volleyball pit never been installed; we wouldn’t be talking about Water Works Park as we know it today. All of those things, and many more too numerous to list happened. Today we are doing nothing different than the community leaders and citizens before us. We are utilizing this space to help make Port Clinton a better place. Now, a great deal has been made about this word “condo”. I’d like to give you my take on this word. However, before I do this I need to make two preemptive statements: 1. Anything said in this or any other forum (including my comments) are purely speculation at this point, as we don’t have any concrete facts about the development. The purpose of Council’s actions on August 13th were to allow the Mayor to work out an agreement with Mr. Rose which Council will then act upon once the facts are hammered out. 2. Every proposal for development of the 14 acres of commercially zoned land has had a condo component. Why is that? First of all, any development needs both startup funds and continuous cash flow to operate. The best way to raise this money with minimal risk for all involved is through the sale of condos. Please keep in mind a condo is merely a defined space within a larger structure. In this area alone we have storage condos, hotel condos, boat condos and jet condos. They can be a permanent residence, time-share, second home and/or vacation rental in addition to storage space, hotel room etc. I think everyone recognizes Kalahari has a very successful and very lucrative enterprise. All of what you see at that expanse of development on S.R. 250 – and for that matter the property tax, sales tax, income tax and bed tax generated as a result of that establishment SOUND OFF being in existence - is a direct result of the “condos” that are part of that endeavour. The “condos” at Kalahari are a purpose built space that is sold to an investor hoping to get a return by renting the space to others (i.e. guests at Kalahari); As a result of the “condo” there is a lowered overall risk for the development which helps to insure its long-term success. As a result of condos at Kalahari, so much positive outflow has been generated for that region. Huron and Perkins School Districts have benefitted from Kalahari’s existence. So have the numerous restaurants and retail places that have sprouted up because of Kalahari’s existence. I guess the same could also be said about the Island House. Without the “condo” element I would believe that cornerstone of downtown would be vacant and yet another blighted mark for PC. Instead it now offers light and energy to our downtown. Here I am speculating – but what you may not know is that I’ve worked in the condo biz in this market for 19+ years so I’m speculating based on a bit more experience and understanding of “condo” than the average individual. The “condos” at WWP aren’t going to look and feel like the LeMarin Condos on Catawba or The Shores Condos on Perry Street. Yes, they will be “condos” but they will be a purpose built condo which will allow so much positive outflow. The term “condo” has somehow been tagged with a negative connotation. Yes, condos like LeMarin and/or The Shores should not be placed on the 14 acres – but at the same time I do believe that “condos”, in the broader definition, absolutely do have a place in this development and not only should they be part of the overall development plan – they need to be if a development is going to happen. So, why am I so confident that Mr. Rose isn’t going to build a LeMarin and/or Shores type condo? I’m not. However, what I heard from Mr. Rose is that he’s investing a tremendous amount of his own money in downtown by acquiring currently rundown buildings and rehabbing them. If he’s going to see a return on that money he needs to have a greater volume of people in downtown than we see now. A Kalahari/Island House type condo–with the other elements he’s discussed-should provide the tools to generate the foot traffic necessary to bring downtown PC back to life. I can’t wait to see how the negotiations with Mr. Rose play out so we can all learn together how his plan for the 14 acres and downtown revitalization coalesce. Thanks for taking the time to listen to my thoughts on the matter and I hope you enjoyed the Tall Ships events. A great many people invested a great deal of time, energy and resources in this event. I can’t wait to help plan the 300th Anniversary Celebration! Mike Snider weekend. I would like to thank the P.O.R.T.S. Committee for bringing this event to fruition and entertaining the entire area for a long and beautiful period of time, a period of time that reminded me of the Port Clinton area so many years ago. I remember on weekends past residents would try to avoid Perry Street because of all the tourists. We would complain about the driving and all the while smirking because we understood how fun it was to live in a lively area with so many benefits to for our residents and visitors alike. This weekend brought those feelings and memories back. As a small business owner and resident, I was proud of the way Port Clinton came together as a community to host this affair. If you didn’t take some personal enjoyment or reward from this experience, you must not have left your home. I look forward to exploring the opportunities to move forward in our community and making Port Clinton a destination for families and friends once again. And, since we are undefeated, maybe we ought to host that reenactment every year. Joe Brenner Thursday, September 19, 2013 3A the shoreline would be nice. Anything but another hotel or condo complex - please. Don’t destroy the last of the charm of Port Clinton. Nancy Barlow Port Clinton Council There is a lot of talk around town right now about council members and what their personal convictions are concerning Mike Rose and Washington Properties’ development of Water Works Park. I would like to remind everyone that the elected representatives of Port Clinton are here to represent the people which they serve. Personal beliefs and interests of council members should have no part in making decisions and choices for Port Clinton residents. We must all remember that city council members were elected to speak for the people and make decisions that represent those people. It is those who reside in Port Clinton whose interests and concerns are to be upheld and projected, not what a council member personally believes or feels is best. Let us remember we live within a Constitutional Republic and not an Oligarchy. Government serves to represent the people, not the personal beliefs and agendas of the few. Thank you for your time, Nathan Janes PPPP festival What a fantastic Labor Day weekend it was in Port Clinton! It was wonderful to see both locals and tourists enjoying themselves on the streets of our city! The Port Clinton Knights of Columbus would like to thank all those involved in making the 2013 Perch, Peach, Pierogi and Polka Festival a great success. Over 5,000 people attended the festival. Thank you to over 200 volunteers who helped make this festive event possible. We also thank our suppliers, musicians, sponsors, the City of Port Clinton, and the PORTS Committee. Special thanks go out to our neighbors, America’s Best Value Inn, Mendoza’s Mexican Restaurant, and Fisherman’s Warf for their cooperation and assistance. Our biggest THANK YOU goes out to our patrons and supporters. Without you, there would be no reason to have a festival. Plans are already underway for next year’s tenth annual Perch, Peach, Pierogi and Polka Festival to make it fun and enjoyable for all. Jerry Arnold and Ed Verkin, Festival Co-chairmen Litter I know my wife and I are part timers of the area and that usually means “tourist” or “visitor”. But we have been property owners on Catawba for the past 7 years and have been coming up for the past 12 years. We love the beauty of the area and the effort most take to keep Catawba Island and Port Clinton looking beautiful. But some people are not making the effort to keep the area clean. I started walking a lot this summer after several back operations. I love walking the Cemetery Road area. Recently I begun to notice all the cigarette butts thrown along each side of the road. Last Saturday I decided to try to count. North side of road from stop sign to stop sign: 217; south side of road: 127. Almost 250, and that count is very light since I had to look up for traffic! Observations: only 1 butt in front of cemetery area; only 2 butts in front of Administration Building; no butts on blacktop in front of maintenance building and volunteer fire house. Concentrated areas are around each corners. So obviously there is a conscious decision where people are throwing them. I realize that these litters can be caused by visitors but not all. Can’t the township place signs periodically warning of littering fines (including cigarette butts)? And can’t smokers stop throwing out their bad habits! I have tried to pick up some of the litter but can’t possibly pick up 250+ cigarette butts! Bob Riepenhoff Waterworks Park For over 30 years I have summered in the Port Clinton area. During that time, I have watched the shrinking Lake Erie coastline being taken over by condominiums and hotels that are for the most part vacant from September to May. And now the last public shoreline is being considered for development of the same. With heartfelt pleading, I beg of you to not let this happen. If you must develop the land in the hopes of drawing people downtown, perhaps a small outdoor amphitheater for summer concerts. Lots of small towns do this. A nature trail for birding, which is a growing attraction, along Bicentennial I was fortunate to attend the Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial and witness the ships in their glory. Any child or adult today would be fascinated by their stories and knowledge. Mr. Dave Glick, age 85, has been the longest active member of the three, joining the department in 1943. . . 70 years!!! He was born is Ashville, OH in 1928 and first came to Lakeside in 1929. The Glicks have owned their current home at 429 Oak since 1941. He recalls how he became a member of the department at age 14 in 1943 . . . “I was working as a messenger in the Administration Bldg when lightning struck a cottage at Cherry & 4th Streets. The fire department was already on the scene when Ken Miller, the Association Asst Mgr., asked me to go to the fire to see if additional help was needed. I peddled my bike to the scene where Chief John Carroll reported the fire had just been extinguished. I reported this message back to Mr. Miller. Soon after, I noticed on a bulletin board in the Ad Bldg: ‘When the fire siren sounds, all male employees who can leave their jobs are to report to the seat of the fire and assist the firemen.’ So from then on, when the siren blew, I went to the station and got on the 1939 ‘Little Ford’ and helped as needed. Since this was during WWII and many firefighters were in the service, all help was appreciated. There were no uniforms, badges or even turnout gear in those days. I also began attending monthly meetings and infrequent training sessions which included taking the 1917 American LaFrance Pumper down to the dock to practice drafting.” Mr. Glick served 2 years in the US Army. He is a popular historian for the area. He earned his BS from Capitol University and attended Graduate School at The Ohio State Univ. He worked 31 years at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village and retired as VP for education. He first received his Lakeside Volunteer Fire Dept badge when the late “Bud” Luebcke was chief and remained active until his final call on 6/30/13. Mr. Don Caldwell, age 81, joined the department in 1947 at age 16 and provided devoted service for 67 years!! He was born in Toledo in 1931 and his family moved permanently to Lakeside in 1943. His parents owned Caldwell’s News Stand in Lakeside. Mr. Caldwell graduated from the University of Toledo in the College of Pharmacy in 1953. In 1954 he was the pharmacist at Green’s Drug Store in Port Clinton and then Perry Pharmacy and later Magruder Hospital. He stated that to be on the department in those early years, one needed to be within hearing distance of the siren which was located on the roof top of Carroll’s Market (currently housing Sloopy’s Pizza, Ooh La La and Joseph Wise Clocks). Mr. Caldwell was a neighbor to the late John Carroll who was the chief at the time. When a call came through to the chief, Don would hear it on the party line and immediately run out the door to join the chief in his car. Mr. Carroll would let Don out at Carroll’s Market on the way to the station so Don could sound the alarm for the other firemen. Mr. Caldwell recalls the alarm was in a red box on a pillar which was located between the current Sloopy’s Pizza and Ooh La La. If the fire was outside of Lakeside, he would sound the siren as one long blast and if the fire was within Lakeside, he would signal with several long blasts. He would then 187 years of service to Lakeside VFD sprint the remaining block to the Lakeside Fire Station (currently the Lakeside Laundry) and write the location of the fire on the chalkboard for the rest of the firemen that would be arriving. Usually the first to arrive would start the “Little Ford” fire truck. Both Mr. Glick and Mr. Caldwell recalled one of the most memorable fires as being in September of 1949 when the Fruit Packing Plant of the Danbury Growers Assn caught fire at Danbury Junction, beside the New York Central’s mainline tracks just before they cross Sandusky Bay. It was a large structure used to process peaches and other local fruit which was then loaded and shipped on the railroad. The fire was most challenging because the refrigerated area had double walls containing insulation of powdered cork. It also stored sulfur dioxide for the spraying of the fruit. This fire began in the evening and burned all through the night and then off and on during the following week due to the cork powder insulation and the sulfur dioxide. Unfortunately, there were no gas masks at the time and the noxious fumes created a horrible odor and breathing hazard. There were two sets of train tracks running next to this facility and trains had to be stopped during this period. Departments from Sandusky, Port Clinton, Marblehead and Lakeside were all called in for this fire and they pumped water from the bay. It was reported that a hose was left on the tracks and was severed by a passing train. Mr. Clayton Werden, Jr, age 88, joined the department in 1962. He recently received his pin honoring him for his 50 years of volunteer service! Mr. Werden purchased his Lakeside home on 3rd and Central Ave in 1960. He was born in New Rochelle, NY in 1925 but spent most of his years in Cincinnati and Lakeside. During WWII he was a trainer in the U.S. for B-17 crews. He worked for RCA at a time when televisions were just entering the stage. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to open his own business, Werden Electric, in Cincinnati in 1948. His son, Clayton Werden III, relayed the story of how his father joined the department. . . “Shortly after the purchase of their Lakeside home, my dad brought his crew of 15-20 employees to help him make repairs and improvements on his new home. As darkness settled in, being an electrician, he hooked up several large lights outside to shine on the house so his workers could continue working. Apparently, he had produced so much light outside the house that the Lakeside firemen came over assuming so much light had to be from a fire. After visiting with the firemen, Mr. Werden decided he’d like to be on the department also.” Werden Electric wired the Lakeside sirens, the Lakeside Methodist Church and the new fire station on Maple Ave and St Rt 163. Mr. Werden has always been a high-spirited and energetic man. In his younger years, when a fire call came through, he would dart out the screen door, hurdle their porch railing and dash down the block to hitch a ride to the fire station with “Bud” Luebcke who was chief AROUND OTTAWA COUNTY The Beacon during this time. However, on one occasion, his motherin-law accidentally locked the screen door. And when a call came through, Mr Werden did his usual herculean fast action through the screen door only this time, he tore the door off the hinges as he tried to exit the locked door and the door remained attached to him as he leapt off his porch and to the street below. Once untangled from the screen, he continued his race down Central Ave yelling “choice” words the whole way. These three remarkable men deserve a fire truck full of gratitude for all their service. At times they sacrificed their own families, their health, and their comfort at night to get to the call as swiftly as possible. They are fine examples to the younger generation and a comfort to sit with and just listen as they share their experiences of earlier days around the Marblehead Peninsula. If you see them on their porches or about town, be sure to thank them for their 187 magnanimous years of combined volunteer service. And being a young daughter of a fire chief during the 60’s and 70’s , I will sign off as my father, “Bud” Luebcke, always did on his plectron each and every day during his evening test that broadcast to all the firemen. His voice will always remain in my childhood memories as he ended the evening test with K Q H 2 3 2. . . . 1800 hours! It looked just like the other perch, but it was really blue. My friends told me to keep it”. Gary said he has been fishing Lake Erie since he was 16 years old, which makes it approximately 50 years. He’s never seen or heard of a blue perch or the now extinct blue walleye that were caught here many years ago. Fred Snyder, an Extension Agent of the Ohio Sea Grant, explains it this way, “Color variants within a species are not uncommon, but color alone is never used to divide a species into two subspecies. Skin color will disappear within a few weeks when a fish is placed into a preservative, so more permanent characteristics are needed. Many of the walleye in the Ohio River have a bluish coloration, but they are not blue pike. Neither is the bluish walleye occasionally caught in some Canadian lakes. Skin color also is influenced by spawning condition and light levels. Most fish caught in clear, shallow water in bright light will be vividly colored while those pulled from areas with low light levels will appear almost milky. Fish have bodies in their skins called chromatophores which carry pigments of different colors. These chromatophores expand and contract, much like the pupil in an eye, as the fish encounters backgrounds of different colors. This allows many species to change color in just 20-30 minutes. The real difference historically noted between yellow walleye and blue pike was a skeletal difference. Blue pike had larger eyes that were closer together (across the top of the head) than walleye. In adult blue pike, when you measured the width between the eyes and divided it into the eye width, you got a ratio ranging from 1.4-2.0. The same measurements on walleye give ratios ranging from 0.8-1.2. It may seem a small difference, but it was reliable and could be maintained in preservation. Nowadays, genetic analysis by Dr. Carol Stepien has shown that blue pike and yellow walleye also differed genetically. It would take measurable differences, either in body parts or genetics rather than skin color, to constitute a different subspecies of yellow perch. So, with that said, the mystery remains as to whether this was truly a blue perch or just a skin color variant due to it’s living conditions, because the fish in question has been cleaned and eaten. “I didn’t know what I caught until I got home from the fish cleaners and looked it up on Google. I would have kept it alive and given it to the ODNR if I had known what it was”, said Gary. So, let this be the lesson: the next time you’re perch fishing and find a rare blue perch on the end of your line let the experts examine it before you eat it. They are one in a million, if it truly is a rare blue perch, and that’s worth putting on the wall instead of the dinner table to remember that day you had the lucky bite! Midwest Birding Symposium migrates back to Lakeside Chautauqua From Thursday, Sept. 19-Sunday, Sept. 22, the 2013 Midwest Birding Symposium (MBS) will return to Lakeside Chautauqua, where it hosted more than 1,000 attendees in 2009 and again in 2011. “The World’s Friendliest Birding Event” promises to be bigger and better this year. The organizers of this premier birding event expect a crowd of bird watchers from around the continent to attend the Midwest Birding Symposium. The symposium will feature programs and performances by North America’s leading bird watchers, an opportunity for birders to network with hundreds of fellow enthusiasts and a vendor area with nature products and services. Additionally, field trips to the area’s best birding locations will be offered. The MBS is a non-profit birding event held every other year in the Midwest. Since the first symposium was held in 1989, the event has taken place in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as Ohio. Lakeside Chautauqua has hosted this birding symposium in 1997, 1999, 2009 and 2011. The birding symposium donates the majority of its net proceeds at each event to support conservation-oriented organizations and programs. At the 2011 event, MBS made donations totaling $22,000 thanks to a matching donation from The Ohio Ornithological Society. During the past three decades, bird watching has grown, with nearly 50 million U.S. residents taking part in this hobby. Meanwhile, the bird-watching and bird-feeding industries have soared to more than $14 billion in annual sales. Bird Watcher’s Digest, The Ohio Ornithological Society and Lakeside Chautauqua are hosts of the 2013 Midwest Birding Symposium. To volunteer, contact 419 798-4461, ext. 248 or e-mail [email protected]. For more information about MBS or to register, visit www.midwestbirding.org or call (800) 879-2473. Danbury Schools combined their elementary and secondary libraries into a District Library this school year. Books from the elementary library were moved to the secondary library area. Shelving was modified, and a space for grades kindergarten through fourth was created. The new chairs, purchased for primary grade students, are the result of a grant written by School District Librarian Lorrie Halblaub. OSS Joint Solid Waste management offers grant money in January and June for tri-county projects that involve recycling. Danbury Schools recycles paper and cardboard and the new chairs are made of approximately 44% recycled material. “They are exceptionally nice chairs, sturdy, colorful, and a wonderful addition to our library”, said Halblaub. The chairs are red, blue, yellow, and green---one color for each table. Taylor Wilhite at the Distracted Driving simulator As a valuable contribution to Homecoming week, Danbury Township Maintenance and Police Department secured a loan from the Ohio Department of Transportation of a Distracted Driving Simulator. Brett Waldron of Danbury Township is instructing students in the use of the simulator this week. The school is hoping to have all current drivers in the high school and many of the upcoming drivers have an opportunity to test drive the simulator. For the first few minutes, students drive the simulator without distractions. For the next few minutes, or until there is a ticket or accident, students are given distractions such as texting while driving or interruptions from a passenger. When a ticket or accident occur, the simulator takes the student through a virtual experience of an ambulance ride or life flight and/or trial and hearing, with a summary of the financial costs and loss of driving privileges that result. Danbury student Cassidy Rhodes drove very cautiously on the simulator, and still experienced an accident when distracted by texting. Cassidy said, “It was hard. I was surprised how hard it was. I definitely won’t text and drive.” Pop-Up Playground Thursday, Sept. 26, the Pop-Up Adventure Play – Port Clinton committee will have a mini pop-up playground at Veterans Park (corner of 2nd and Monroe) from 5-8 p.m. during the regularly scheduled Art Walk in downtown Port Clinton. The event is free and open to all youth and their adults. “Our event is based on the work of Pop-Up Adventure Play, a UK-based nonprofit promoting child-directed play in communities of supportive adults,” said Christine Galvin, area director of United Way in Ottawa County. Studies show that this type of play allows children the opportunity to practice innovative thinking skills and to build self-confidence and become independent thinkers and problem solvers, all skills needed in our global business environment. The Pop-Up Adventure Playground has a “non-shopping list” of materials needed for next week’s event -– and much of it may be waiting for recycling or trash pick up. That cardboard box sitting by the door, those mismatched plastic containers and empty plastic bottles ready for the bin, old sheets or towels would find a happy home at the adventure playground. Please drop off any materials at United Way, Sutton Center, 1854 E. Perry, Port Clinton. The committee also needs additional materials, such as tape, glue, bright fabric and kid-safe scissors. “We need volunteers to collect material, to promote the event, to set-up and take-down for the event at Veterans’ Park next to Coffee Express, to volunteer from 5-8, to debrief afterwards, and prepare to do it again,” said Galvin. If interested, please contact her at 419.734.6645 or via email [email protected]. This event is a response to the town meeting with Dr. Robert Putnam where he cited Port Clinton as an example of a national problem in his article, “Crumbling American Dreams.” In an open letter to the community, Galvin asked the people of Port Clinton to determine what they could do to help our kids, half of whom are living in poverty. Melissa Bayer of East Harbor Montessori responded with the idea for the playground. Below is a list of the kinds of things that are great for play, but anything that’s clean (and not sharp and won’t shatter) can work. Just remember that children should be able to cut, color, tear, glue or otherwise change the materials. Cardboard boxes and tubes, Paper bags, Plastic bottles and other containers, Magazines and newspaper, Cotton balls, String and yarn, Old keys, Mixing bowls, Wooden spoons, Old bedsheets and towels, Bright fabric, Buckets and old tires, Old hats or socks, Giant bottle caps. The fish are supplied by Fender’s Fish Hatchery, Baltic, Ohio. Their tank truck, with aerator, will distribute the ordered fish on Thursday, Oct. 3rd in the afternoon. Fish available are: Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Fathead Minnows, Largemouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Redear Sunfish and White Amur. White Amur (more commonly known as “Grass Carp”) are members of the minnow family reported to attain weights in excess of 100 pounds and to live up to 15 years. Leafy, rooted aquatic plants, such as pondweed and coontail, are the preferred food of these fish. Lacking these, they will consume floating duckweed, green algae and even cattails. Just recently, the PCLC came to an agreement with the city to place the restored lighthouse on the north side of derby pond in Waterworks Park. Rich Norgard, president of the PCLC, said the organization is “appreciative of the city and in particular Mayor Leone for working with the conservancy to place the lighthouse in a place that’s mutually acceptable.” All of the members of the PCLC have been longtime residents of Port Clinton and want to make a contribution to the community. Lighthouses are destination points historically and visually; the PCLC hopes that weddings, gatherings and other social functions will take place at the lighthouse. They see the lighthouse as being a great asset to downtown Port Clinton. PCLC also has agreed to keep up the maintenance on the lighthouse. The Coast Guard has said that no large wattage of bulb can be pointed towards the lake for safety reasons, but a smaller light will be visible from Perry Street. Friday Sept. 13 from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday Sept. 14 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. the Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy is holding an open house to display the lighthouse to the public. The lighthouse has moved from Brands’ Marina to a storage facility so it can be worked on year round. Daily work has been performed on the lighthouse to make great progress on its restoration. The Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy is looking for volunteers to help with their vision. They are looking for people who have experience with boatbuilding, engineering, woodworking or fundraising. To contact the Lighthouse Conservancy to see what ways you can help write PCLC, P.O. Hearth Cooking and history in Marblehead BY DONNA LUEKE On Saturday’s cool and quiet September morning the fire in fireplace at the Keeper’s House near Marblehead warmed the 191 year old stone house and served to cook scones and bread, as in centuries past. The oldest surviving home in Ottawa County, the “Keeper’s House was the home of the first three lighthouse keepers for Marblehead Light. Keeper’s House volunteer Ray Machar stoked the fire and gathered embers for the hearth cooking demonstrated by Ray’s wife Georgette and Sue Lavoie. On the hearth griddle sizzled apple scones while the bread oven that is built into the fireplace warmed to get up to temperature for bread baking and the Dutch oven awaited cornbread batter. When asked what interested him about hearth cooking, Machar said at first it was “a free meal” at a historical society meeting. Since that time, the Machars, Lavoie and other volunteers have learned more about hearth cooking and have compiled a cook book of authentic and tested recipes that can be used with a home fireplace or campfire. Paul Moon, Ottawa County Historical Society President, told how the impressive fireplace in the Keeper’s House was rebuilt from local limestone following the imprint of the original fireplace, that it was replicated as closely as possible. At the adjacent museum and gift shop volunteers Nancy Dunham, Nel Adcock and Sharon Coder shared that books and CDs on the history of the Keeper’s House, Ottawa County’s role in the war of 1812, and the history of the county are available at the Ottawa County Historical Museum in Port Clinton. Open 10am-6pm Closed on Wednesdays www.portclintonart-gifts-furniture.com Home Furnishings & Accessories A new CD is available on The Skirmish on the Peninsula. “The War of 1812 has reminded us of the many local points of interest in our historic past. At Battlefield Park in Danbury Township, a monument stands that marks the burial spots of eight U.S. militiamen who died in 1812 on a march across the peninsula in search of food. When the local residents fled the area (believing war with Great Britain was close at hand) they left behind fields of unharvested crops. On the way to the Ramsdell Plantation (now East Harbor State Park) the militia were attacked by a group of Wyandotte Indians who were allies of the British. The skirmish that ensued was the first encounter in Ohio in the War of 1812,” said Nancy Dunham. Another new CD that is available is on the ship “The Success”, from a presentation by Richard Norgard to the Historical Society in 2012. The Success burned off the shore of Port Clinton on July 4th, 1946. The program traced the travels of a ship built in the South Pacific and passed along through owners in Europe and finally the United States, providing a history of empire and commercial enterprise in the past 200 years. Both DVDs, “The Success” and “The Skirmish on the Peninsula” have been prepared by Theo Dunham of Video Creations and are now available through The Ottawa County Historical Society for $15 each or by emailing [email protected]. Several volumes of “The people of Ottawa County”, collections of oral history interviews, are also available at the Ottawa County Historical Museum or at www. thekeepershouse.org. PORTS from 4A Fighters Association, Walleye Drop, Friends of the Parks, Port Clinton Fireworks, Port Clinton Pee Wee Football. Kathy Mehl commented that the many volunteers that helped with the event were also rewarded financially. The celebration wouldn’t have gone as well without them. Bill Yuhaz, who was in charge of the Great Lakes Heritage Tent, was pleased that the tent was filled with artifacts of our heritage and history. Bill Van Der Giessen praised the coming together of the citizens and the city to make the festival have such a successful economic impact. When united with a defined purpose, great things can be accomplished. Both Hymore-Tester and Van Der Giessen greatly thank the city’s administration, police, fire, city crews and all the staff that contributed to the event. www.edwardjones.com TELEVISION & S m a l l E l e c t ro n i c s CO L L E C T I O N You put your family first. Located in the Historic Island House www.thebeacon.net Danbury falls to St. Mary CC, drops to 1-2 on the season BY YANEEK SMITH Following last Friday’s 40-14 defeat at the hands of the St. Mary CC Panthers, there are two ways to look at Danbury’s current situation. The pessimistic view would say that the Lakers are 1-2, just like they were at this time last season. On the other hand, however, there is reason to be hopeful. Danbury, in the midst of a rebuilding process, is very close to being 2-1 and had a much better showing this year against SMCC than they did last season. In their game against the Panthers, Danbury, which was missing a number of key starters, fell behind 20-7 after the first quarter and 34-14 at halftime. SMCC quarterback Trevor Fitzthum threw for 166 yards and four scores and ran for 99 yards and a touchdown. He threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter, a 27-yarder to Caleb Severance and a nine-yarder to Hayden Snow. After Danbury running back Cody German scored from one yard out to cut the deficit to 14-7, Fitzthum ran a touchdown in from 63 yards out with 19 seconds remaining in the period. “It was a tough game,” Danbury head coach Bryan Dudash said. “The injury bug came back and got us. We lost German and (Taylon) Molnar and that makes it tough for SPORTS Thursday, September 19, 2013 1B See DANBURY 2B MARBLEHEAD’S FINEST RETAILERS SUPPORTING THE OTTAWA COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY PAW THROUGH MARBLEHEAD “Live Local...Bank Local...Shop Local” Invest in your community and we can invest in you. Behind a number of big plays, the Eagles took control early before defeating Oak Harbor, 56-7, on Friday night at Freedom Field in Luckey. After both teams traded possessions, Eastwood’s Michael Flipse returned a punt 60 yards for a score to give the Eagles the lead and they never looked back. On the play, Flipse ran up the middle and cut to the left before outrunning the Rocket defenders to the end zone for the score. Lucas McCullough, who made all eight of his extra-point attempts, made it 7-0 with the PAT. Eastwood made it 14-0, scoring on a 4-yard run by Grant Geiser to finish off a 42-yard drive that begin in Oak Harbor territory. The Eagles then recovered an onside kick before Rocket linebacker Cobi Brough recovered a fumble at the 17-yard-line. Oak Harbor, however, went three-and-out and Eastwood scored on the third play of their ensuing drive when Devin Snowden ran it in from 48 yards outs. Brent Schlumbohm pushed the Eastwood advantage to 28-0 when he ran it in from three yards out to complete a 50-yard drive. Quarterback Jake Schmeltz made the key play, running for 12 yards on a draw on third-and-9 from the 34. Oak Harbor got on the board, cutting the deficit to 28-7 when Cole Weirich took the pitch off a reverse from quarterback Andre Ramsey and raced down the sidelines 82 yards to give the Rockets new life. Oak Harbor was able to force a punt, and, with under a Eastwood defeats Oak Harbor, 56-7 minute remaining in the second quarter, tried to get another score before halftime. However, Ramsey threw an interception and the Eagles responded, scoring on a 38-yard pass from Schmeltz to Flipse with 20 seconds remaining. “That punt return right away was key,” said Eastwood head coach Jerry Rutherford. “The exact same thing happened to them last week against Genoa. When they ran that reverse with Weirich and got it to 28-7 and then stopped us and got the ball back, they had a chance there. But they threw the interception and we were able to score right before the half and make it 35-7 instead of 28-7 or possibly 28-14.” Last season, the Rockets edged the Eagles, 28-21, in a hard-fought game that went down to the wire. In the second half, Eastwood put the game away on its opening drive, making it 42-7 when Schlumbohm scored on a 4-yard-run with 9:42 left in the third quarter. The Eagles’ ground game was the difference in the game. The Eagles ran it 41 times for 322 yards and had three running backs finish with at least yards on the ground. Snowden carried it 10 times for 83 yards and a score, Schlumbohm had 11 carries for 72 yards and two touchdowns and Brennan Seifert ran it three times for 53 yards and a touchdown. Weirich, who recently moved from quarterback to wide receiver, had two carries for 86 yards and a touchdown and Kalob Vargas carried it 12 times for 42 yards. Ramsey completed 4-of-8 passes for 49 yards with an interception. This week, the Rockets travel to Port Clinton to face the Redskins. Molnar, his fellow running back, injured his knee and the team is waiting to find out the severity of it. In the second quarter, Fitzthum hit Denarius Harris for a 21-yard touchdown and Derek Cook from five yards out. Danbury quarterback Seth Vargo scored from a yard out, making the score 34-14 at halftime. Vargo completed 9-of-20 passes for 95 yards and two interceptions. So, while the daily papers have suffered, the FREE communities weeklies like The Beacon have thrived. And better yet The Beacon’s Web Site just gets better and better, updated every day with new community news items. The Beacon was “Hyper-Local” before the term was coined! So, when you hear “Newspapers are dead” ... don’t believe it! Community papers are alive and well, thank you! And our Web Sites are great as well because we don’t have to worry about losing readership to our own Web Site. All you have to do is sit back and read your weekly Beacon and stay informed about the “good news” happening every day. NEW 2013 BUICK VERANO Keegan Lowe spurts through a small hole in the rugged Genoa defensive line. Photos By Bill Migala. BY YANEEK SMITH Last Friday, Port Clinton played one of the best teams in the state of Ohio in the Genoa Comets. And Genoa proved its worth, defeating the Redskins, 8413, at True-Lay Stadium. The Comets, who have qualified for the playoffs six straight times, took control from the outset, scoring three touchdown in each of the first two quarters to take a 41-0 lead into the half. Running back Jake Wojciechowski led the way, rushing seven times for 181 yards and scoring two touchdowns (80, 77) in the first half. Quarterback Logan Scott ran for two touchdowns in the first half, too, as the Comets built a 41-0 lead after two quarters. Port Clinton did score twice in the second half, once in the third quarter and another time in the fourth. Freshman Emerson Lowe, who had five receptions for 147 yards, caught two touchdown passes (80, 39) from backup quarterback Jesse Escobedo. Noah Cross had two catches for 17 yards and starting quarterback Brandon Moore finished with 20 yards rushing. “Genoa plays very, very good defense,” Port Clinton head coach Beau Carmon said. “It’s hard to move the ball on them. We showed some signs (of promise) on offense — we’d run out of gas or turn it over.” Carmon was pleased with the fact that, despite being down 61-0 in the third quarter, his team did not fold. “That was our guys not giving up,” he said of them scoring their 14 points in the second half. “I don’t know if it built any momentum, it was just more about our guys not giving up. It’s nice to score a couple touchdowns. It was nice to get some points on the board (but) we’re not where we want to be offensively or defensively.” This Friday, the ‘Skins host cross-town rival Oak Harbor (1-2). The Rockets have lost two straight games by a combined 119-14 against Genoa and Eastwood, respectively. Oak Harbor, which has won the last three contests with Port Clinton, has a run-based offense that focuses on ball control and playing good defense. “As far as Oak Harbor is concerned, they’re bigger than us and more physical,” Carmon said. “They might be able to go toe-to-toe with our skill guys. Our line guys have to pick it up – we’ve got to be able to run the ball and stop the run. Our defense hasn’t stopped anyone and that’s a concern. That’s not the type of team we are — we don’t have the offensive firepower to get into a shootout. I think the jury is still out on our defense. “It’s hard to tell where we are. We’ve given up 184 points in three games and that’s absolutely absurd. That’s not acceptable. That’s something we take pride in and defensively, we made a few personnel adjustments, and hopefully, we’ll respond (this week).” NEW 2013 CHRYSLER 200 $ LEASE FOR FOR *L Lease e is is ffor 36 months. ths.. $1,8 ths $ $1,800 1,800 00 due at signi signing, 10,000 m miles per year.
