A Model MoU Between Industries Consuming Plant Raw Drugs And VSS AP-CF/Model MoU/Final The current report titled “Assessment Of Medicinal Plant Resources At 18 Sampled VSS Sites Across Six Selected Districts Of The Project Area” constitutes one of the outputs generated under the consultancy contract. AP-CF/VSS/Resource/Final Assessment of Medicinal Plant Resources at 18 sampled VSS sites across six selected districts of the project area. A total of 18 VSS sites (3 in each of the 6 selected districts) were selected for sampling and PRA exercise. In addition to the participation of the representatives of the selected VSS, members from neighbouring 4/5 VSS were also involved in the PRA exercise. These PRA exercises were conducted during September, 2001 to December, 2001, across the selected 18 sites, by six local NGO’s as per the calendar enclosed (AP-CF/Resource/Table 1). Each of these six NGO’s took charge of carrying out the PRAs in their respective districts. A specialist field botanist participated in each such exercise to ensure authenticity of botanical information including assessment of the plant resources. Six of these 18 VSS sites fall in each of the three agro-climatic regions of Andhra Pradesh namely Andhra region, Telangana region and Rayalseema region. In addition to the usual recording of data relating to the socio-economic aspects through PRA’s, at each site, an attempt has been made to undertake a rapid assessment of the status of medicinal plant resources of the area. This involved making an assessment of the following: a) Locally available plants in medicinal use by the community members. b) Locally available medicinal plants in commercial trade c) Medicinal plants locally perceived as threatened (and some even disappeared) by the community members d) Suggestions of local community representatives for conservation of specific sites for valuable medicinal plants of the region. This data was collected and recorded as part of the PRA exercise along with proper verification of the identity of plant entities by the botanical experts who participated in each PRA exercise. Comparison and analysis of data, across different sites, is not possible without such authentication of identities of plant species. Pooling of such data from these 18 VSS sites, and its analysis, has provided some very interesting results and insights which are summarized below: 1. Though a total of 415 plant species have been recorded in medicinal use (PHC and veterinary) across 18 sites (AP-CF/Resource/Table 2), a sizeable proportion of these (more than 59%) have been recorded in local use only in one or two sites (APCF/Resource/Fig.1). This reflects the diversity of local health practices as well as of plant resources across the geographical spread of the sampled region. 2. A total of 23 species, in this list, may be referred to as the most frequently used local medicinal plants with each of these species recorded in local medicinal use at nine or are not enlisted as medicinal as per FRLHT’s database. 5. Some of the well known and tradable herbaceous species are reportedly common in many of the sampled sites but not reported in trade at any of these sites. This reveals the inadequacy of published inventories of plant species occurring in the region. of these twenty three species. present naturally in several locations. Eclipta prostrata (6 sites). The combined list of traded and potentially tradable species. stands at 100 species (AP-CF/Resource/Table 4). 8. Another 57 species have been identified as potentially tradable but currently not traded at any of these sites. are well known in commercial trade as plant raw drugs. With the addition of these species. Phyllanthus amarus (7 sites) and Tribulus terrestris (6 sites). Another 17 species. The potentially tradable tag has a very limited connotation and has been assigned based on fulfillment of only two criteria namely i) ii) Local presence of the species as common / abundant and The plant raw drugs obtained from the species already recorded in commercial trade in at least one of the raw drug markets studied by FRLHT research team. This indicates the gap in available (published) documentation of medicinal status of locally available plant species (FRLHT’s current database has more than 7000 botanical names bearing medicinal tags). 4. All these “potentially tradable” species (AP-CF/Resource/Table 5). Curculigo orchioides (8 sites). the total number in the master list of medicinal plants of the region stands at 1600. across these 18 sites.AP-CF/VSS/Resource/Final more of these eighteen sites. 23 of these 415 species were not included in the master list of medicinal plants of Andhra Pradesh (1577 species) included in interim status reports finalized in December. 2001. Local names of these medicinal plant species have been recorded at each of the surveyed 18 VSS sites and a tabulation of these is annexed (refer AP-CF/Resource/Table 2). The table enlists 415 botanical names along with local names and the bracketed number refers to the particular site of recording. 3. Some examples of such species are Achyranthes aspera (9 sites).
