The word transponder is short for transmitter and receiver and came to use around 1944. A basic description of a transponder is an electronic chip which sends (transmits) and picks up (receives) signals when the key is inserted in the ignition. A coil around the ignition barrel is attached to the immobiliser ECU which interprets these signals into meaningful data. And if valid the car will be allowed to start. Newer vehicles don’t have a separate immobiliser box –instead integrating all electronics into one ECU box. Immobilisers have effectively reduced vehicle crime but also made the job more complex a matter when legitimately replacing old or lost keys. Replacement keys with a transponder chip must first be ‘programmed’ to the immobiliser unit. This is where the AutoTEC tool comes into play. It actually requests the immobiliser to add a key, rather than any intrusive action, so making it safe and easy to use with simple screen step-by-step actions. Common transponder chips are manufactured by Philips, Texas Instruments and Megamos. The chip is hidden within the plastic surround of the key. Philips –GM Vauxhall/Opel, BMW Texas Instruments –Ford Megamos –Honda Vehicle manufactures supply replacement keys through their main-dealer garages. Being OEM they offer reliable keys and are often supplied based on the vehicles VIN number to ensure correct. Aftermarket key ‘copies’ from suppliers such as Silka are inexpensive and worth considering. Distributors such as North West Keys sell these keys and can be more helpful. Also they can supply just the transponder chip which can be really useful in some situations, i.e. if the original cut key lost its chip. The cut of a key is beyond the scope of this manual but basically there are a few types and equipment can be purchase to cut these keys. The ‘cut code’ corresponding to the cuts on the key are available from the maindealer and again usually supplied by giving the vehicles VIN number. If this information is not available then an extra key could be cut to an original or replacement made with a matching barrow and key from another vehicle. OBD Systems 3-78 Pin extraction exists for this system and the first two systems can provide the key cut code without the ignition on. The first system appeared from 1994 to 1998 and used Philips fixed transponders. The later systems have the immobiliser integrated with the engine ECU. Often the diagnostic system to select on the AutoTEC tool can indicate the system. As well having fixed code transponders. both fixed and crypto types are recommended for use. Note any engine ECU fault can cause a problem coding a key on this system.e. A common misnomer with this system was the red key was somehow different from the slave keys. A good key supplier such as North West Keys will be able to give advice and supply to both vehicle and year. You won’t find it printed anywhere but with the exception of Ford and early Nissan. And use Philips Crypto. From late 1994 to 1997 they used a red master key and two black slave keys. Numerous systems exist and some can only be programmed OBD Systems 4-78 . always changing or ‘rolling’. i. The best example of this was Ford. For example. Rolling code systems started to appear after 1998 and most models now employ the newer system. Thankfully the simple solution is to purchase the key already ‘pre-coded’. The vehicle manufacture has written a unique fixed code to the key which the AutoTEC tool needs when coding to the vehicle.AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding 2) Key + System Types The transponder’s signal or code is either fixed or on more modern vehicles. be wary when using new fixed code aftermarket keys. some manufactures employed a master & slave key system. The first two systems have a separate remote system –normally a plastic black box. Virtually all vehicles use the modern rolling code system today. Also refer to note about aftermarket keys in the “Key + System Types” section. A few important notes on each system are listed below… GM Vauxhall/Opel 3 Immobiliser system types exist. Selecting system 1 will result in “NO COMMUNICATION”. Fiat also used a red master key system but unlike Ford it’s only possible to replace the keys by replacing the ECU. In fact the only difference is colour but the customer may expect a red key anyway. They don’t have the fixed key code issue. As substantial savings can be made with aftermarket keys. for vehicles before 1998. so exit and try system 2. Vauxhall switched over to the new rolling code in 1998 –called system 2. The immobiliser is integrated into the coil around the ignition barrow. Rover 75 use a BMW system with a serial bar code which has to be entered with the AutoTEC tool to code to vehicle. The latest CAN system programs the remote along with the key. We recommend keeping a few transponders spare without the key –from pre1997 and from post 1998 as there are two types. just a time delay of about 10 minutes. In 2003 a coded access system appeared called HSPATS. must have a minimum of two keys coded or the vehicle will refuse to start! Nissan Numerous systems exist referred to as NATS. or High Security PATS. Remotes are coded manually without the AutoTEC tool. Cars to 2000 and pick-ups to approximately 2002 used pre-crypto key and system called NATS 2.AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding with a pin code. No pin code is required for this system. Diesel VW Sharan (both VW & Ford hybrid). No pin code exists. Referred to as PATS. Ford Numerous systems exist from late 1994. Problems can occur if any engine fault code exists or particularly if a fuse has blown on early vehicles. OBD Systems 5-78 . Note Rover 100 and LandRover 1996 used a single button plip which is coded manually. Diesel Galaxy. and Fords around 1997 and 1998. As the key and remote is separate this must be the easiest and most profitable make. We are working to bypass this system –check for availability. A master key system was used up to 1997. or Nissan Anti Theft. Importantly the vehicle may need a minimum of two or three keys to start if erasing the key set. and no pin code required. Refer to Remote section. Aftermarket keys are easy to use for the earlier PATS systems as no fix code issue exists. or Passive Anti Theft. Often these earlier key can be identified by the red key tag which holds the transponder in place but don’t rely on this. Rover and LandRover From 1995 a Lucus two button plip was used and is easy to code with the AutoTEC. Suzuki Easy to code system. Some Daewoos can not be coded. No pin Code required. They differ! Delco system 3 is CAN based and has an integrated remote system. a separate remote box exists and get both the 5-digit immobiliser code and the 5-digit remote code. The vehicle may become immobiilsed for half an hour even with a valid key. Note also. where fitted.AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding Fiat & Alfa Romeo A red master key system existed before 1999 and replacement of this key can only be done through replacement ECU. Mitsubishi Easy to code. A few systems exist. Daewoo A couple of systems exist. Kia after 2000 with a Hyundai immobiliser are covered. OBD Systems 6-78 . No pin code required. With an early Matiz be wary of the type of key used and the fixed code problem with aftermarket keys. Fiat Secentio and Fiat/Alfa Romeo vans use this system. If you experience any problems and can not start the vehicle with the original –disconnect the battery for 5 minitues to restart the system. Pin code extraction from 2000 is based on the vehicle’s VIN number. retry again on another system BUT don’t attempt a 3rd time. Delco system 2 then came into existence with a separate white or black immobiliser box. Leave the ignition on for half an hour with the working key to restart the system. Hyundai & Kia Early Hyundai before 2000 used a fixed pin code (so no code). There are a few Mitsubishis which are fitted with different immobilisers and can only be done by the main-dealer. The 4-digit pin code is per-model based and is provided. Honda Note AutoTEC Coverage from 1999 onwards. If you do experience “NO COMMUNICATIONS” or “INCORRECT PIN CODE”. plug the harness (normally OBD) attached to the AutoTEC into the vehicle. Peugeot. Coding keys or remotes involves taking one of three possible actions: Erase Key Set & Add Key Program Key Set ‘Erase Key Set’ and ‘Add Key’ allows the user to simply add a key. and GM tend to be friendlier. Requesting pin codes from can be main-dealer can be difficult.AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding 3) Quick Start Guide Automotive Key programming offers an interesting and potentially money making venture. After power up. This has to be entered before coding the key or remote. As an extra security to stop unauthorised programming of keys. Rover for example informs the user to press the remote lock button 8 times and the horn will sound. ‘Erase Key Set’ will remove all keys from the system. but rather an extra. Then add key can be selected to add the first key to OBD Systems 7-78 . if the vehicle was stolen-recovered or the maximum number of keys the immobiliser can store reached. Some systems have more complex screen instructions but on a whole it’s pretty straight forward series of instructions. On finding the diagnostic socket. The AutoTEC will display “PROGRAMMING FAILED” if the vehicle was expecting a different key or fixed code if pre-crypto. select the model / system – ‘. Citroen. The AutoTEC has wide vehicle coverage and some vehicles you will find are easier to code keys & remotes for than others. many vehicle manufacturers gave each vehicle a unique security pin code. However. Push the up and down buttons to achieve this. If the manufacturer changed the type of key and/or transponder in the year of vehicle being worked on this can cause a headache as the above problem would appear. Pin extraction provided by the AutoTEC tool helps but is not a total solution. Simple as that! The best way to become confident with the tool is to plug into a few Rovers and other systems. Rover must be the simplest because No key needs to be cut as plip based One type of device (plip) across many years No pin code required Extremely simple screen instructions Lucus Rover Plip The type of key or plip can complicate coding a key. VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat group don’t give out the codes and Renault tend to be awkward.5AS’ for Rover. The ‘Program Key Set’ option is more common and combines erasing the key set with add key. Some systems actually write data to the transponder chip so don’t always rely on second hand keys or transponders –even though we recommend keeping some spare avoid reuse of Vauxhall/Opel keys from 1998 and Citroen and Peugeot keys from approximately 2001. Getting known helps –its not what you know. If unsure then ask! Ford doesn’t have this problem. It’s impossible to damage or virtually impossible to immobilise a car unintentionally. Daewoo. MYTH 3 The AutoTEC will communicate with a vehicle with a broken ECU and diagnose its fault. Some main-dealers are more difficult to deal with than others. TIP 1 When purchasing pre-crypto aftermarket keys (pre-1999 normally) make sure you get the fixed code placed on them. The AutoTEC tool is been designed not to electrically damage the car. Ford which don’t need codes. its who you know! FACT The AutoTEC tool is one of few tools to have built in protection from vehicle BUS faults or protection from internal faults should it be damaged somehow. Renault tend to be the worse. It won’t leave the system without any keys as the existing keys will only be erased once the new 1st one has been added. Honda. MYTH 5 Key coding is difficult. The disadvantage is all keys must be present. Its worth doing the odd job for them to ask for favors in return.AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding the system. No tool in the world can do this MYTH 4 Can’t get hold of security pin codes. Like anything in life –things improve with practice. Its not ab`solutely necessary though with the wide range of vehicles like Rover. facts and tips are outline below… MYTH 1 I can re-use all keys or transponders chips. MYTH 2 I can damage the vehicle somehow when coding a key or leave the vehicle with no keys. OBD Systems 8-78 . Some myths. Leave the ignition switched on for this half hour and will be ok. For example. The transponder chip can be replaced with the space.AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding TIP 2 Keep some common spare transponder chips. TIP 3 Always carry a battery pack around with you. TIP 5 Always wait a minute after switching the ignition on. Because of the way they work both a Mitsubishi and Daewoo vehicle may become immobilised even with an original working key but by carrying out the above solution the vehicle will be sure to restart. Ensure repairs are carried out first and then the various possible fault codes read and cleared. This means you will have to wait up to half an hour before retrying again. the second rejected. If you experience communications problems then leave the ignition off even when you get the “SWITCH IGNITION ON” prompt. The car will go into lockout mode. For Daewoo momentarily disconnect the battery. The first key should be accepted. Otherwise “NO COMMUNICATION” can occur. TIP 9 When coding a key set start with the original working key if exists. OBD Systems 9-78 . With Mitsubishi the vehicle won’t start for this time. TIP 8 Don’t enter an incorrect access code more than 3 times. TIP 4 It’s not recommended to work on a damaged vehicle or known to have serious problems (like missing ECU!). A battery pack can solve this problem. The AutoTEC will inform of a low battery by a red LED on power up. TIP 7 Use the right keyboard button to quickly jump through the vehicle list. This gives the electrical systems around the vehicle time to settle. New Alfa Romeo’s are known to suffer from this. TIP 6 With Rover and early Vauxhalls the system may work better with the ignition off. That way it’s more obvious if the subsequent new key is the wrong type. if the Ford your working on requires two keys but the customer only wants to pay for one. Never code a key on low power. Saves money in the long run but refer to top MYTH above. Especially on aftermarket keys where it’s deliberately made easy to remove the embedded transponder chip. TIP 11 Always leave time for the immobiliser system to settle after an unsuccessful key coding. Otherwise you may have to wait 5 or so minutes before being sure the key(s) have or have not been programmed. Lock and then unlock with working remote to reset the system. OBD Systems 10-78 . This gives the system time to settle and reset much like the above tip recommends.AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding TIP 10 Some times the immobiliser kicks in to anti-theft mode after coding a key(s). Immobiliser 1 system fitted to Citroen Saxo doesn’t have remotes –you have to wait up to 30 minutes after coding a key set! Nissan NATS 5 system always seems to need the remote activated to reset the system. The worst wait time is normally around 5 minutes so be patent! Hopefully the vehicle will start after that time with the newly coded key(s). Ensure ignition on and restart. Exit and try another system / year. May appear on key coding or general vehicle communications error.5 volts. Will not damage other tools but prevents communications until fixed.AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding 4) Screens Warning screen which may appear: This screen will appear if the vehicle’s battery voltage fails below a nominal value of 10. Look at component data (if exists) and see if ok. Follow the screen instructions at a sensible pace and have the keys cut and ready beside you. Try another transponder chip. Too slow or fast. 4. We try our best to know all immobiliser systems but not always possible! 7.AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding A “COMMUNICATIONS” operation failed message may appear because of the following reasons in order of likelihood: 1. A key might not code because: 1. 5. the more likely the latter causes occur. This may be the first in the list if model/year not covered. Incorrect system selected –exit and try another system. Instead of replacing the whole cut key. 3. 2. Incorrect key used. System not covered. OBD Systems 13-78 . Too quick –leave time for system to settle after initially switching ignition on. This will confirm the new key has a wrong transponder chip.e. Screen instructions not followed. i. This saves money and cutting another key! 2. Battery low. Nothing exists for the AutoTEC tool to talk to! So don’t expect it to perform miracles! 6. Battery Low 5. Key not accepted –occasionally this can cause above problem. Note if an existing key works and you’re coding a key set –just try to code this key and see if re-accepted when coding. System fault –ECU is dysfunctional or wiring. Wrong system. Battery voltage etc. Check and clean the wiring and maybe plug another diagnostic tool into the vehicle to see if that has trouble communicating also. Ignition off –many systems require the ignition on initially 3. re-order only the transponder chip to replace the one in the key. ok? Exit and re-try another system as some times similar systems will communicate with no communications error. AutoTEC Manual Key & Remote Coding OBD Systems 14-78 .
