Part 5: Comparison of Internet Article and Database Article #1 Ease of Access The database was easier to search than the regular internet, however there are obviously many, many more articles on the internet when you are not exclusively looking for scholarly articles. Both are relatively easy to search with a specific topic, the difference again being 4 Assignment #1 Erik White looking for the scholarly article. On the database it is important to also select full text because some of the articles only provide abstracts unless you are a member of their specific site, this makes access more difficult than the internet. Timeliness The scholarly articles are definitely more difficult to find in a “current” nature. It has always been my understanding that scholarly articles are considered timely if they have been written/reviewed in the last few years, specifically last six years I believe. As far as using the internet to find “current” articles the date or month that is being looked for can be put into the search box and many articles can be retrieved in that time frame. So when searching for currency of events the internet is definitely easier than the database. Authority The scholarly articles on the database are usually written by someone or a group of people considered to be experts in the area of writing and then the articles are usually reviewed or edited by a governing body or organization. The information provided is considered to be factual and relevant, whereas internet information depending on what type of site it is found on is considered to be much less reliable. Even articles written in newspapers or specific websites are usually just of opinion and much less fact. They may have direct quotes from experts in the field on information supplied by them, but the person writing the article is simply a writer not an expert in the field themselves. Internet sites have notoriously been known to provide false information as well. 5
