ACADEMIC PRESSURE- Too much to Handle Presented By – Shakeeb Arefin, E.E(C), Roll No.13 What is it?? • It is the mental stress that initiates from schools and the education system. it is the pressure that comes along with pursuing an educational qualification. . • Academic stress is especially hard on undergraduate students who have recently cocooned out from a not so independent schooling system.  • Often . Issues with Time Management. Students who are forced to study specific subjects against their own wishes. Grades are seen as a benchmark for prospective successes in life. Fear of Failure. .Academic Pressure: Reasons These pressures mainly come from:      Parental Expectations. • • Parental pressures to pursue academic success have both positive and negative effects on their children.Parental Some Parents are always Expectations: pushing their children to excel • academically. From the parents’ perspective it is seen as an investment for their better future. . Forced to study specific subjects against their own wishes • • • Parents want their children to work in a profession in which they have a good chance in succeeding economically. However. . many youngsters do not have the same priority as their parents do. medicine. And they are right to some extent. They may be more interested in a not so lucrative career but on one that matches their interests. business or law. They feel that studying in general subjects won’t be as lucrative as studying engineering. Fear of Failure • Students want to get an ‘A’ so desperately that they sacrifice their own creativity and choose an easy way out simply to get better grades. • They come to prefer easier tasks not because they are lazy. their odds are better if they avoid taking intellectual risks . but because they are rational – After all. if the goal is to get an A. Grades are seen as a benchmark for prospective successes in life. and they lose sight of the actual purpose: • “LEARNING” . • Students begin to think of themselves as nothing more than a test score. .Issues with Time Management • External forces also create academic pressures. • The solution requires dedication. Many students fail to practice effective time management and are good in procrastinating. commitment and discipline in daily life. • Students should balance their daily studies with other extra-curricular activities to gain a good balance in life. . Why it is Bad? • • Academic Pressure forces students to perceive negative thoughts about education and the purpose of their lives. Most students who cannot handle academic pressure try to escape from it. They vent it out through negativity and if unsuccessful take the extreme step - . .Academic Pressure leads to… • • • • • Elevated Stress levels Tendency of Cheating Unsocial Behaviour Obsession with Grades Health issues etc. So what to do??? • • • Here are some suggestions to avoid or overcome academic pressure: Most importantly: Don’t stress about Being stressed • Set your Goals • Manage your time • Communicate with teachers and parents and friends. . 2.Factors influencing Academic Pressure 1. 3. Parents Faculty or Institutions Students perception . . • Non-listening of children – • Over-expectation and Job fear of children's- Children.Financial issues from their own and demands from institutions bring pressure to their minds. They wanted their children should be on the top of the academic ladder. . Teenagers not ready to listen advices from parents. Job fear and Employment risk also bring pressure into their minds. Parents getting their own pressure by expecting more from the children. • Financial issues.Parents • Peer Pressure from neighbours and relatives – People around parents asking questions about the marks of children and comparring their kid’s performance. This brings pressure to parents. Faculty . Strikes.g. • Students mindset. which is not possible. Comparing other faculties with one and playing the shame and blame games. Students never understand the purpose of teaching. Students taking advantages of free – minded faculties and makee them cool by behavior but not giving results. Institutions giving other responsibilities also affects their classsroom behavior. Classrooms became a place for Testing Teachers.Students are not hearing advices of Faculties . • Over load of other works other than teaching . • Job security .This is the extent to which lack of job security and job changes are a source of pressure. temporary/fixed term contracts .Teachers or Faculties are not only working in front of students. Putting faculty under pressure for not bringing all students at same level.Faculty Or Institutions • Result oriented expectations – Institutions expecting marks and 100% pass results from very subjects. Sudden leaves. They have been given other works too. e. for example: ------> job insecurity ---- lack of job permanence. Indifinite closes bring them pressure of completing the syllabus in given time. Family issues also affects them. So understanding the subject is difficult to them. Fear of tests and examinations and lack of interest in field. Father’s job. outing are the major distractions.Students perception • • • • • • • • • • • • Interest towards subject – Students are not ready to learn. sms and movies . Just wants to get marks. Mother’s illness. . Secondly.games. Distractions – TV. Financial situation of the family are the major reasons. Family issues. Family issues and Friends issues – Problems in real life brings pressure. Not concentrating in class and sudden questions coming from faculties gives them pressure. mobile. • One should understand others two.CONCLUSION • Parents Are You Followin g? Faculty • It’s a triangular realtionship. s • It will reduce the pressure. • Elders should express their real in tension of growing up the Student student. . THANK YOU .
