I am Huixin. 1 Kiara Afrina I am Kiara And I am Afrina. We are your emcees for this morning and on behalf of the school, we would like to welcome you to Junyuan’s 15th Recognition and Awards Presentation Day 2014. Junyuan Secondary School is fifteen years old this year and our programme today will be a celebration of the hard work and devotion of past and present leaders, staff and students, which has allowed the school to grow and flourish into what it is today. Today, our school presents numerous opportunities for our students that aim to nurture and empower them into Junyuan champs. Yes and for our programme today, we would like to present to you the many good things that make up Junyuan and bring you through the true meaning of our school name. ‘Junyuan’ – which, in English, means ‘the source of good things’. (PA to play music from Sportify as background music) (Platter #1 – 15 Key Milestones of Junyuan) As we begin our celebrations, we would like to present to you today, the key highlights of the school since its establishment in 1999 to the year 2013. Please put your hands together as we invite two of our Junyuan staff, Mr Johari and Miss Li Wenlin, to share the important milestones of our school over the years at 11 Tampines Street 84. (Mr Johari and Miss Li Wenlin to share the key milestones of the school from 1999 – 2013.) (wait for the last teacher to exit stage) Thank you. It gives me great pleasure now to invite our principal, Mdm Lee Lai Yong, to address us. Mdm Lee, please. *Usher to escort Mdm Lee and pass mic* Kiara Huixin Afrina 2 Principal’s Address Kiara Thank you, Mdm Lee. Next, it is my pleasure to invite our Guest-of-Honour, Mr Douglas Foo, Chairman, CEO and founder of Apex-Pal International Ltd, to address us. Sir, please. *Usher to escort GOH and pass him the mic* GOH’s Address Afrina Huixin Thank you, Mr Foo. Here in Junyuan, students are taught to be persons of character. They strive towards excellence and challenge themselves to greater heights. Together with this, we also learn the importance of values and we learn to appreciate the source of good things. Yes, and one of the ways we demonstrate our appreciation is through our service to the community. This is why our vision is to be ‘A Champion School for the Community’ – where the students endeavour to better themselves as well as the community around them. And to celebrate our commitment and service to the community, we will have our first performance by the Modern Dance Club. Ladies and gentleman, please welcome them! (PA to play Modern Dance Music – Be My Guest) Kiara Afrina Modern Dance Performance *to showcase community projects on the screen Kiara I’m sure you would agree with me, Huixin, that our students and staff often look forward to our community outreach activities during Chinese New Year, National Day, Hari Raya and Deepavali. Yes, and this year, I remember the personalised horses we made which the students distributed as part of our Chinese New year well-wishes to the residents nearby. Huixin 3 Afrina Platter #2 – Mini Hampers Not only that, this year, as part of our celebrations for the completion of 15 years, we also extended our outreach project during Chinese New Year. As our friends serve the second platter of “good things”, let me elaborate more. (ushers to give out the hampers) The mini-hampers that are being served to our guests is symbolic of 15 hampers that the school handed out to 15 needy residents in the area. This was a joint project with the Tampines Central Community Centre and the Tampines Vista Resident’s Committee together with the Junyuan family. In addition, our Lower Secondary students also decorated the RC notice boards of 15 blocks in the area around the school to spread the festive joy with the Tampines community. Huixin Kiara I must say it gets exciting year on year. Definitely. Apart from the community outreach projects, our students have also initiated several projects through their CCAs such as the Herb Garden by the Library and Weiqi Club, which promotes a green ambience to the school environment, and an Annual Fund Raising by the Student Council for the Children Cancer Foundation. That’s wonderful! Through such projects, our students can therefore demonstrate responsibility towards the environment and community and the value of resilience as they overcome challenges in the planning and execution of the projects. I agree. It is said “The giving of love is an education in itself” and I’m sure our friends have learnt much through their community engagement projects. *pause* As we move on to our next part of the programme, the Prize Giving presentation for Lower Secondary, we will have Sa’ed and Hanif to present the segment. Huixin Afrina Prize Giving Ceremony (Lower Sec) Sa’ed Thank you. Platter # 3 – JYSS Cookie Afrina Dear distinguished guests, as our ushers are serving the next item to you, do allow me to enlighten you about these special Junyuan cookies. (ushers to serve cookies) As part our Applied Learning Programme, the Lower Secondary Home Economics subject was integrated with an Applied Science component. While our Food and Nutrition teachers demonstrate the culinary skills of the dishes to the students, the Science teachers would step in to teach the scientific segment of the curriculum. Imagine investigating how different water content affects the making of popcorn? Or finding out the oil content of different brands of potato chips available in the stores? Kiara Thus, the Applied Learning Programme allows students to experiment with Food Science and at the end of the programme, students compete in the ‘Junyuan Science Master Chef’ where they are judged on a dish they have created as well as their scientific knowledge behind these dishes. The JYSS cookies which you have received are a product of the programme. 7 Huixin What is so unique about these cookies, you may ask? Well, an exceptional fact about these cookies is that they contain a significant herb called Wolfberry and Limezest to emphasise the innovative culture in the school. This is of course, aside from baking them with a little bit of sugar, spice and lots of love from Junyuan! Ladies and gentlemen, do enjoy your cookies as we continue with today's programme. Prize Giving Ceremony (Upper Sec) Germaine We will now present the prizes to our deserving winners from the Secondary Three 2013 cohort. (ushers to enter to serve the postcards) These postcards are a reflection of the vibrant CCA culture that we have here in Junyuan Secondary. Here, CCA is a platform to provide our students with a holistic values-driven education where we aim to develop our students’ skills and talent as well as their character. When you take a look at the postcards, you would notice that our school's motto; 'Resolute, Righteous & Responsible' is imprinted on them. The motto is also embedded in the lyrics of our school song as we hope that each Junyuan champ will exemplify these values and be a 'Resolute, Righteous & Responsible' person at the end of his or her education here in Junyuan. We hope you like the postcards and keep them as a memento! Kiara Our various CCAs have also made some achievements in the past year. Our Infocomm club achieved GOLD in the Students’ Animation Competition organized by Ministry of Education and Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Our NCC (boys), Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade have sustained the GOLD Award for the past five, four and three years respectively. Since Archery started in 2009, our Archery team is one of the top four schools in Nationwide Archery competition for both the Boys and Girls divisions. In addition, last year, our ‘C’ Division girls clinched the overall Champion title. For the Singapore Youth Festival in 2013, both our Modern Dance and Chinese Dance clubs achieved Certificate of Distinction. Now, we would like to present you with a performance by the lively and vibrant Chinese Dance Club of Junyuan Secondary School. Dear guests, do sit back, relax and enjoy the performance! Performance by Chinese Dance 10 Prize Giving – CCA Awards Afrina Next, we have the presentation for the Colours Awards. The Colours Awards are presented annually to students in recognition for their outstanding contributions to their Sports CCAs. Above all, these students conduct themselves in an exemplary manner which promotes the value of sportsmanship. May I invite our principal, Mdm Lee Lai Yong to give out the awards to the winners. Mdm Lee, please. (Usher escorts Mdm Lee up on stage) Huixin Zonal Colours Award for Rugby – Yeo Meng Kiat Xavier Zonal Colours Award for Rugby – Akmal Hakim Bin Hairi Zonal Colours Award for Wushu – Loh Yan Ping Apart from the Colours Award, we also have two students who have received recognition for their outstanding contributions in their CCAs. Outstanding Cadet Award for NCC Land (Boys) – Zikry Ramadhan Bin Rahmat Founder’s Man Award for Boys’ Brigade – Alvin Goh Si Yang Thank you, Mdm Lee. (Usher to invite Mdm Lee down stage) Platter # 5 -9 Kiara (Sa’ed and Hanif to position off stage, on the floor) Next you will receive a unique and interesting item on your platter. How many of you have seen or played with this puzzle before? (Audience Response) (ushers to enter to serve the metal puzzle) Difficult isn’t it? Well this metal puzzle does indeed look intricate and complicated, and it has been said that many have spent countless hours to solve this puzzle. And when they finally manage to, they marvel at how simple the solution to the puzzle is. 11 Afrina Why would we then present to you this simple, yet challenging gift? The puzzle serves to remind us of the different partnerships that the school has forged with various organisations. Firstly, we have the Mothership Project @ JYSS which is a collaborative effort between a social enterprise and JYSS. For this project, the volunteers dedicate their weekend time to help our students in English and Mathematics. Next, we have our partnership with Singapore Disability Sport Council where we raised awareness of sports for the disabled among staff and students by inviting an SDSC participant to demonstrate a Paralympic sport. Members of the school staff also took the lead to volunteer at the Singapore Disability Sport Council Family Day. Another partnership we have is with the Singapore Armed Forces (1SIR). 1SIR have also supported the school’s “Total Defence Day” for since 2011. They educated both students and staff on urban and conventional warfare through their display and exhibits, rations-tasting and camouflage-painting stations. Junyuan Mother tongue teachers also worked with them to conduct an 8-session of Basic Conversational MT Language course. This was held to teach the officers basic conversational skills in one other mother tongue language. Not only that, Afrina, but Junyuan also has a partnership with the SAF in running a leadership programme. The leadership programme with 1SIR aims to develop leadership amongst students as well as teach both teachers and students problem solving and conflict resolution skills through fun and engaging activities. It has been a truly enriching partnership! Junyuan has also collaborated in various events with Tampines Central Community Centre. Firstly, the Edusave Bursary award ceremony was held right here in the halls of Junyuan, and we also worked together to host Tampines Emergency Preparedness Day. In line with school’s vision “A Champion School for the Community”, JYSS supported Tampines Central Community Centre’s grassroots events to serve community needs within Tampines area. Huixin Kiara Afrina Huixin Kiara 12 Afrina Let me direct you back to the puzzle in front of you. This puzzle serves to remind us of how our partnerships which are closely knitted can complement each other to find solutions to seemingly complicated obstacles. Our tagline - ‘A Culture of Respect & Responsibility through Dynamic Synergy’ is symbolic of how through effort and working together, we, as a team, are then able to overcome any challenges and tasks that have been bestowed on us. Today, we would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to the committed partners of the school who have dedicated so much of their time to contribute to the successes of our students and the school. While we acknowledge their contributions, let us also not forget about the people amongst us who have put in their heart and soul for the betterment of the school – our teachers. Huixin Prize Giving – Partners & Long Service Awards Afrina Now, may we call upon our Principal Mdm Lee again to give out the awards for the recipients of Friends of the School Award and Long Service Award. Mdm Lee, please. (Usher escorts Mdm Lee to stage) Kiara Friends of the School Award For the Friends of the School Award, from the Parent Support Group, 1. Mr Donald Ouh Yew Meng, Chairperson 2. (Usher to usher Mdm Lee down) Our next item is a guest performance by our elegant and graceful Malay dancers from Junyuan Primary School. The dance is a traditional Malay welcome dance, depicting joyfulness and merriment. The 'tepak sirih' used in the dance symbolise honouring the guests and the 'silat' in the dance symbolise safety for the guest. As one Junyuan family, we are truly thrilled to have our Junyuan Primary friends to perform for us as both schools continue to strengthen our partnership. Ladies and gentlemen, please give a round of applause for Junyuan Primary School Malay Dance group! (PA to play Music for JYPS Malay Dance) Kiara Dance Item by JYPS 14 Platter #10-12 – Teabag with QR Code Huixin That was indeed a mesmerizing performance. Thank you again to our friends from Junyuan Primary School. Next, ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to present to you our next platter of good things. Our ushers will now distribute a teabag imprinted with a QR code. If you access the QR code using your smartphone, it will lead you to a website which showcases the various learning environments around the school. The teabag itself is symbolic as it comes from our very own Le Jardin Café, which is located to our right here. (emcee point to the right) (ushers to enter to serve the platter) (PA to play Sportify Music) Kiara Le Jardin Café, or ‘The Garden Café’ in French, was born in 2012 with the aim of providing our students with opportunities to hone their management and marketing skills as they run the café independently for their fellow schoolmates. Over the 2 years, the café also has served as a platform for community projects such as fund-raising through the sale of ice-creams. Another enhancement to bolster a conducive learning environment in school is the E.Forum@JY. Under the helm of the Humanities Department, the school library was transformed into a learning centre with facilities that allow students and staff to have instant access to knowledge and information. The word ‘forum’ in Latin means an open space or a public place where people gather. The letter ‘e’ refers to electronics and characterises the ability to transfer information freely, and to have instant access to information. With these in mind, e-forum@JY aims to be a place where great minds converge and ideas ignite. Afrina 15 Huixin At the same time, Junyuan believes that every space in the school should be used innovatively for teaching and learning. With that in mind, the school proceeded to enhance the corridor which is on your left (points to the right) with TV screen displays. Information such as announcements, local and international news and Word of the Day are screened and updated daily for the students. Together with the TV screen displays, the murals and posters that you see around the courtyard and along the staircases have periodically been included over the past few years as they collectively serve to enhance the learning experiences of our students. Kiara Also, it is hard for one not to notice the pillars found in our school’s canteen. With the concept of turning the canteen into a cultural centre, the Mother Tongue Department had adorned the pillars with posters of famous destinations around the world such as Lighthouse of Alexandria, and Colossus of Rhodes. To promote culture and arts, information such as historical facts about the Seven Wonders of the World are also included. The information in English is also presented in the different Mother Tongue languages and have been utilised as part of the Mother Tongue lessons. I must say, Kiara, the enhancements to the school environment that we have experienced over the years have been quite exciting, don’t you agree? There are always some new corners and walls of information and inspiration for us to explore every time. I definitely agree on that and I’m sure the conducive learning environment in school has also served as an inspiration to our prize winners in the next segment. For the Prize Presentation for Secondary Four and Five, we will invite our friend Qonita and Bethany to present the segment. Afrina Kiara Prize Giving Ceremony – Sec 4 & 5 Qonita Thank you. Coming up next is the moment we have all been waiting for: the prize presentation of our Secondary Four and Five 2013 cohort! These awardees had worked hard through their years in Junyuan and they did outstandingly well for their national examinations in 2013. (escorts Mdm Lee and Mr Foo down the stage) Platter #13 Huixin Junyuan has been a 2nd home to more than 1000 students every year these last 15 years. Apart from the teaching and learning which take place here, Junyuan also prepares its charges to face the challenges of the 21st Century by equipping them with soft skills to face the real world. The holistic development of a child is very much a priority for the teachers here in the Junyuan family. That is very true. In fact, we see this is in every aspect of a Junyuan student’s life here – from the type of curriculum delivered in class to programmes run in the various Co-Curricular Activities. The CCE syllabus is also strongly emphasized in Junyuan. This is done through the various events we have here in Junyuan – our community outreach projects, the vibrant CCA culture, the partnerships we forge and through the innovation and entrepreneurship we invest in. We believe every Junyuan student will be ready for the challenges of the 21st Century. Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pride and pleasure that I introduce one of our valedictorians for the 2013 cohort, Sandy Lim Xin Yi. Sandy graduated last year with 7 distinctions in the O Level National Exams 2013. (Usher to invite Sandy) Afrina Thank you Sandy. We now invite our next valedictorian for the 2013 cohort, Lin Qian Qian. Qian Qian was the President of 8th Student Council in 2012. (Usher to invite Qian Qian) Afrina Thank you Qian Qian. Kiara Afrina 20 Platter #14 Kiara Our last gift to you today is of a simple yet symbolic nature. It is a party shaker that we have gifted you to thank you for joining us in this truly joyous celebration. Indeed, 15 years in education is no mean feat and Junyuan has a lot to be thankful for. And you, our dear guests, have a big part to play in it. (ushers to enter to serve the platter) Huixin Indeed, our shared commitment together with our community partners show a strong alignment to the school vision which states that we are a champion school for the community. Our stakeholders work synergistically with us in mutual trust and respect. We enjoy a shared understanding and work towards a common goal in nurturing community champions of tomorrow. In its entirety, this fosters a culture of respect and responsibility through dynamic synergy. Please join us in shaking the one on your table to symbolize the harmonious relationship between Junyuan and its many partners. It is this very synergy that has sustained us and has enabled Junyuan to grow by leaps and bounds. *finale music to start* Afrina *All Emcees to follow cue in the Finale song **Sa’ed to encourage the audience to make some noise by moving their shakers. Other emcees to also rally the crowd** Kiara Thank you all – for the time, energy and, most importantly faith, you have in us. With your support, may Junyuan continue to flourish and be the school the community can truly be proud of. Finale Mass Dance & Singing Afrina Ladies and gentlemen, thank you so much for being with us this morning. We hope you have enjoyed yourselves. Our Guest of Honour will declare open the new Learning for Life Programme in the school – the Entrepreneurship Centre, shortly. 21 Huixin The Entrepreneurship Centre, which comprises 23 pushcarts that you see presently around us, is part of the Learning for Life Programme that aims to nurture our students via experiential learning to lead in social entrepreneurship for the community. Our CCA groups collaborate with various social enterprises to raise funds for their adopted cause while at the same time, develop a sense of leadership in service learning as they work together as a CCA to generate and conceptualise ideas that meet the needs of the community. We hope through this, the students in Junyuan will be equipped with the skills and the drive for a life-long commitment to serve the community. Ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated as we invite our Guest of Honour, Mr Foo, to declare open our new Entrepreneurship Centre – BIZIT. *wait for cue for GOH to leave the courtyard* We would now like to invite our prize winners to present a token of love and appreciation to their parents. Thank you, prize winners. Kiara Afrina *wait for cue* Now that our Entrepreneurship Centre – BIZIT has been declared open, we would now like to invite our guests, parents and students to visit the various pushcarts located at Level One and Two and support our students in their drive to raise funds for a social cause. Thank you for being a part of Junyuan’s Recognition and Award Presentation 2014. We thank your support for all these 15 years at 11 Tampines Street 84. We hope you have enjoyed the day as much as we have. Thank you and have a good day. 22
