SANFORD Canisteo, N.Y. - Ethel B. Sanford, 80, of 14 Tenth St., Canisteo, passed away Wednesday (March 31, 2010) at McAuley Manor. Born in the Town Of Canisteo, Jan. 8, 1930, the daughter of Lowell and Mabel Covel Butler, she had resided in Canisteo all her life. She had been employed at the former Westinghouse Plant in Bath for 10 years and as a nurse’s aide at both St. James Mercy Hospital and the Hornell Gardens. After their retirement, Ethel and Pete enjoyed spending time at their cottage at Lake Lamoka. Ethel enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grand and great-grandchildren. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Canisteo American Legion Post, No. 846. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses on Whippoorwill Lane at McAuley Manor for the wonderful care Ethel was given. A special thanks to Bob and Barb Hammond for their weekly visits. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, James “Pete” Sanford in 2009; her sister, Ella O’Dell; her brothers, Charles, Glen and Newell Butler; and her grandson, David Richardson. Born in North Hornell, July 28, 1932, the daughter of Reed and Lottie Turybury Champlin of Alfred. Arlene graduated from Alfred-Almond Central School, Class of 1950, going on to graduate from SUNY Morrisville Class of 1952, majoring in food service administration. She was an assistant dietitian at Broadacres in Utica from 1953-54, the school lunch manager at Cato Meridian Central School in 1955 and the secretary at Nolan Machinery in Pulaski from 1960-65. In 1965 she moved back to Alfred and in September of 1966 became secretary at the Guidance Office at Alfred-Almond Central School and worked in this position until retirement in 1992. In 1982 she became secretary of the Alfred-Almond Alumni Association and remained in that position until 2003 and continued on as a AACS Alumni member of the board. She was also secretary/treasurer and board member of the Maplewood Cemetery since 1982 in Alfred Station. Arlene was also inducted into the Alfred-Almond Alumni Hall Fame as a contributor. She had a love of crocheting, dressing “bed dolls” and received two ribbons for Best of Show at Allegany County Fair in Angelica. She was predeceased by her husband, William Roberts, in 1982, whom she married June 24, 1954. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Roberts of Alfred Station; brothers, Verge (Patricia Carney) Champlin, Raymond Champlin and Dale Champlin; sister-in-law, Betty Roberts; nieces, Linda Strong (Fred) Robinson, Robyn (Shelton) Champlin, Corinne Champlin (Brian) Harrison; nephews, Terry (Sylvia) Strong, Collin (Tammy) Champlin, David Champlin, Tracey Champlin and Randy Champlin; and greatnephew, Logan William Champlin. Born in Hornell, May 13, 1917, the daughter of Ezra and Erna Miller Green, she was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Hornell High School. In her early life, she had worked for the Pentagon during World War II. She married Raymond C. Allis on June 23, 1943, who predeceased her on March 12, 1999. Helen was a member of the former St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, where she was very involved, and enjoyed crafts, playing piano and cats. Helen was a gracious person and will be most remembered for the love and compassion for her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond; her son, James F. Allis in 1973; and her sister, Ruth Christian. She is survived by four daughters, Beverly Burdett of Waterloo, Barbara (David) Irion of Holidaysburg, Pa., Christine Drum of Hornell, Suzanne (David) Miller of Horseheads; a son, Raymond (Brenda) Allis Jr. of Tucson, Ariz; sister, Lucille McEvoy of Florida; grandchildren, Gary Bailey Jr., Nicky Drum, David Irion, James Irion, Ryan Miller, Gregory Miller; greatgrandchildren, Zachery, Jacob, Courtney, Gabrielle Bailey and Noah Jenkins; longtime friend of the family, William Drum; several nieces and nephews. Nasca, 68, of 11 Florence St., passed into the loving arms of Jesus Thursday (March 25, 2010) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a short illness. Born Feb. 2, 1942, in Canisteo, the daughter of Clifford and Margaret Andrus Dennis, she resided in Canisteo for 18 years prior to moving to Hornell following her marriage in 1960 to Louis Nasca. She was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, Class of 1960, and had been employed as a teacher’s aide for the Steuben-Allegany BOCES for 23 years prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in North Hornell and a longtime member of the Women Of The Word Bible Study. She was predeceased by her parents, and her brother and sisterin-law, Orville and Lovonne Campbell. She is survived by her husband, Louis Nasca, with whom she would have celebrated 50 years of marriage in August 2010; two daughters, Susan (Raymond) Gibson of Texas, and Terresa (Brian) Andrews of Georgia; two sons, Louis Nasca of Canaseraga, and Christopher Nasca of Georgia; one sister, Evelyn (Norman) Little of Bath; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family was present to receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Monday at the Canisteo Wesleyan Church, 25 Greenwood St., Canisteo. The family welcomed all in a celebration of Sharon’s life at 7 p.m. Rev.
