YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD APPLIANCE SALES & SERVICE from the American Sleep Apnea Association * Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. * “Apnea” is a Greek word meaning “without breath.” An apnea is clinically defined as a cessation of breath that lasts at least ten seconds. * “Hypopnea” also comes from Greek: “hypo” meaning “beneath” or “less than normal” and “pnea” meaning “breath.” A hypopnea is not a complete Hours: Mon.-Fri. 9am-6pm; Sat. 9am-5pm; Sun. 11am-3pm 1553 Olean-Portville Rd., Olean, NY Sales: 716-372-0565 Service: 716-372-0578 Visit our website www.beseckerandcoss.com “We Built Our Business On Service” Sleep Apnea Fact Sheet cessation of breath but can be defined as a perceptible reduction in airflow that leads to sleep fragmentation or to a decrease in the oxygen level in the bloodstream. * The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) or respiratory disturbance index (RDI) refers to the total number of apneas and hypopneas divided by the total sleep study in a patient’s sleep study. The AHI gives one measure of the severity of the sleep apnea. * There are three types of apnea: obstructive, central, and mixed (a combination of obstructive and central). Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common. * Typically the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and closes the airway, forcing victims of sleep apnea to stop breathing repeatedly during sleep, as frequently as a hundred. * Although the typical sleep apnea patent is overweight, male, and over the age of forty, sleep apnea affects both males and females of all ages and of ideal weight. * The most common symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness (i.e., falling asleep easily and sometimes inappropriately). * Untreated sleep apnea can be life threatening; consequences may include high blood pressure and other cardiovascular complications. * More than twelve million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, and it is estimated conservatively that ten million remain undiagnosed. Risk Factors for Sleep Apnea * Some studies have shown that a family history of sleep apnea increases the risk of OSA two to four times. * Being overweight is a risk factor for OSA, as is having a large neck. However, not all with sleep apnea are obese. For more information, read Sleep Apnea and BMI: The Majority of OSA Patients Are Not Obese. * Sleep apnea is more likely to occur in men than in women. * Abnormalities of the structure of the upper airway contribute to sleep apnea. * Sleep apnea may be more common among AfricanAmericans, Pacific Islanders, and Mexicans. * Smoking and alcohol use increase the risk of sleep apnea. Treatments for Sleep Apnea * There are a variety of treatments for sleep apnea. The most appropriate treatment depends on an individual’s medical history and the severity of the disorder. * Treatment regimens included lifestyle changes such as avoiding alcohol, oral appliances, and surgery. * Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most common treatment for sleep apnea. The CPAP machine pushes air through the airway at a pressure high enough to keep the airway open during sleep. American Sleep Apnea Association PAGE 5 National Sleep Awareness Week March 7-13, 2011 Do You Need a New Mattress? With most products, it’s fairly obvious when a replacement is needed. If it no longer works or has signs of wear and tear that impair its ability, you know its time for a new one. However, realizing that it is time for a new mattress and foundation isn’t always so obvious. Similar to your favorite old chair or worn pair of shoes, your mattress can still feel comfortable long after it has lost its ability to provide your body with the proper support and comfort it needs. Because sleep is so critical to our ability to function and feel our best, it is important to evaluate your sleep set on a regular basis. MONEYSAVER SHOPPING GUIDE MARCH 8, 2011 Signs that You May Need a New Mattress & Foundation (boxspring): • You wake up with stiffness, numbness, aches and pains  • You had a better night’s sleep somewhere other than your own bed (such as a hotel)  • Your mattress shows visible signs of overuse (it sags, has lumps, the interior is exposed, etc.)  • Your mattress is 5 – 7 years old* *How long a mattress will last depends on several factors, such as amount of use and original quality, but in general, a mattress set that has been in use 5-7 years is no longer providing you with the best comfort and support. Keep in mind that people’s bodies change over time, and the need for good comfort and support only increases with age. That’s why it’s a good idea to compare the mattress and foundation you are sleeping on now to newer models every few years. long the product should be used before replacement. The warranty is there to protect the customer from product defects, not against the gradual loss of comfort and support. Moreover, different manufacturers offer different warranties, and you should check with the manufacturer of your mattress for productspecific information. children and other family members. This is especially harmful for children, whose active, developing bodies require the support of a good quality mattress. If the bed is no longer good enough for you, it’s not good enough for anybody else; throw it out. Here are two ways to get rid of an old sleep set: 1. Ask the store where you bought your new mattress to pick it up when they deliver the new set. Many retailers today offer this service as part of your purchase price or for a nominal fee. 2. Call your local municipality, sanitation department or garbage collector. They usually have provisions for picking up larger items, but you may need to make arrangements in advance. The Proper Send-Off: Mattress Disposal Made Easy: Old beds turn up in the oddest places – in the bottom of lakes, by the side of the road, in the classified ads of the newspaper. Clearly, people don’t know what to do with old mattresses! It’s estimated that nearly 70% of old beds stay in circulation, handed down like heirlooms to What About The Warranty? At the same time, more than half (54%) of college parents say their son or daughter will not get enough sleep with another 41% not sure, but hopeful. Nearly half of students, themselves (49%), say they’ll get less sleep than at home. The Better Sleep Council offers students and parents some practical tips for getting a better night’s sleep and, perhaps, a better college experience: • A consistent bed time. While exams and assignments can create some late nights, students should look to go to bed at a reasonable time, and make that time as consistent as possible • Room-darkening shades. Hang them to keep light out during the early morning • A new mattress. Make sure it’s the right size and of appropriate comfort; if the college provides the mattress, look for a comfortable mattress topper • A reasonable diet. A large pizza at 11 pm may not be the best preslumber snack • Soothing music or sound machine Off To College, But Not Off To Sleep Starting every day with a good night’s sleepTM is important year round. The Better Sleep Council (BSC) conducted a stress and sleep survey to find out what keeps Americans up at night. This year’s findings revealed a range of insights on Americans’ stress and sleep cycles. Here are some of the results: How Stressed Are We? • 65% of Americans are losing sleep due to stress • 32% of Americans are losing sleep at least one night per week. (up three points from 2003) • 16% of Americans experience stressinduced insomnia. People sleeping close to the sufferer are more likely to be aware of the snoring and the apneas. “I know personally that untreated sleep apnea can have serious consequences. In my case, my doctors said it weakened my heart so much that I had to have triple bypass surgery,” Mr. Kennedy noted. “Yet I’m one of the lucky ones who is diagnosed and welltreated: most people with sleep apnea remain untreated. I am pleased to help the ASAA reach the millions who still suffer from this common but rarely recognized disorder. The sooner they get help for sleep apnea, the better.” Several studies show untreated sleep apnea is an independent risk factor for high blood pressure; studies also suggest an association between untreated sleep apnea and stroke as well as other cardiovascular disease such as congestive heart disease and myocardial infarction. Additional consequences of untreated sleep apnea include reflux (heartburn), nocturia (the need to use the bathroom frequently at night), feelings of depression, and weight gain. Rochelle Goldberg, MD, President of the ASAA and a sleep specialist, says Americans should not brush off snoring. “While most people think of snoring as just annoying, snoring can be a burden to your health. Sleep-disordered breathing should be evaluated by a doctor or sleep specialist. Left untreated, sleep apnea can cause much harm. Fortunately, it can be treated effectively, and I see every day the benefit of treatment in my patients.” On Monday, March 31, National Sleep Apnea Awareness Day, Americans should ask themselves if snoring is getting them (or substances, may also be helpful in restoring sleep. Chiropractic care, massage therapy, and professionally prescribed herbal remedies or supplements are also helpful in correcting sleep imbalances. Yoga, Tai Chi and meditation aid many people in successfully managing or correcting their sleep, and stress, issues. These practices are all highly beneficial to a person’s overall health. Besides having herbal tea and toast at bedtime, insomniacs may want to consider adding the following practices to their bedtime routines: * Rub a little lavender essential oil on the pillowcase. *Take a hot foot bath for fifteen minutes before retiring, or place a hot water bottle or non-electric heating pad under the blankets near your feet.+++ (Warm the feet only, not the whole body!) * Pay attention to your breathing to help distract your mind from other thoughts. What is Restless Legs Syndrome? from National Institutes of Health Snoring Got You Down? Get Help Now Monday, March 31 is National Sleep Apnea Awareness Day Actor George Kennedy Serves as Honorary Chairman of the Day Washington, D.C. No one wants to admit to snoring, but talking to your doctor about it can save your life. Just ask George Kennedy. After all, snoring can get you down: it can drain your energy and damage your health. “I knew I snored, but I didn’t know that meant I had a medical disorder. Fortunately, my new doctors asked me last year about my snoring, and once diagnosed with sleep apnea, I began treatment which has turned my life around,” Mr. Kennedy said. Snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea. People with untreated sleep apnea literally stop breathing numerous times in their sleep each night, sometimes for more than two minutes. Each time breathing ceases, the brain signals those with sleep apnea to arouse briefly from sleep in order to resume breathing. As a result, sleep is constantly fragmented, leaving untreated apneics extremely tired. Besides snoring, symptoms include falling asleep easily and/or sometimes inappropriately, memory problems, irrita- . Better Sleep, Holistically Shaune D Ralph, LAc Many people have occasional trouble sleeping. Most have their favorite home remedies for sleeplessness, including warm milk or hot cocoa, graham crackers, or calling grandma for a lullaby. Many more people have chronic sleep problems for which natural medicine may be able to help. Acupuncture and other forms of East Asian medicine sees insomnia as being caused by an imbalance of the body’s vital energy, or Qi (chee). Correcting that imbalance benefits overall health and can restore restful sleep. In fact, many people report sounder, more refreshed sleep as a side-benefit of acupuncture regardless of the original condition for which they sought treatment. As always, your acupuncturist will look at you as a whole person, not just a symptom. However, she will also ask a lot of questions about your sleep including * Do you have trouble falling asleep? * Do you have difficulty staying asleep? * Do you have vivid or disturbing dreams? * Do you prefer to sleep on your back, stomach or side? * How often do you get up during the night, and why? * Do you have trouble “shutting off your thoughts”? The answers to these questions will direct the treatment approach to give you the best possible results. Here are some tips from the Better Sleep Council for maintaining a healthy sleep cycle and ensuring the best night’s rest: 1. Make sleep a priority by keeping a consistent sleep (bedtime) and wake schedule, including weekends. 2. Create a bedtime routine that is relaxing. Experts recommend reading a book, listening to soothing music or soaking in a hot bath. 3. Transform your bedroom into a haven of comfort. Create a room that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool for the best possible sleep. 4. Evaluate your mattress and pillow to ensure proper comfort and support. If your mattress is five to seven years old, it may be time for a new one. In general, pillows should be replaced every year. 5. Keep work materials, computers and televisions out of the bedroom; it should be used for sleep and sex only. 6. Exercise regularly, but complete workouts at least two hours before bedtime. 7. If you sleep with a partner, your mattress should allow each of you enough space to move easily. Couples who’ve been sleeping on a “double” (full size) may think they have enough room, until they learn that each person has only as much sleeping space as a baby’s crib! 8. Avoid nicotine (e.g., cigarettes, tobacco products). Used close to bedtime, it can lead to poor sleep. 9. Avoid caffeine and alcohol (e.g., coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate) close to bedtime. It can keep you Sleep Tips Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable, and sometimes overwhelming, urge to move them for relief. Individuals affected with the disorder often describe the sensations as throbbing, polling, or creeping. The sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful. For those with mild to moderate symptoms, many physicians suggest certain lifestyle changes and activities to reduce or eliminate symptoms. Decreased use of caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco may provide some relief. Physicians may suggest that certain individuals take supplements to correct deficiencies in iron, folate, and magnesium. Taking a hot bath, massaging the legs, or using a heating pad or ice pack can help relieve symptoms in some patients. Physicians also may suggest a variety of medications to treat RLS, including dopaminergics, benzodiazepines (central nervous system depressants), opioids, and anticonvulsants. The drugs ropinirole and pramipexole have been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration for treating moderate to severe RLS. What is the prognosis? RLS is generally a lifelong condition for which there is no cure. Symptoms may gradually worsen with age. Nevertheless, current therapies can control the disorder, minimizing symptoms and increasing periods of restful sleep. In addition, some individuals have remissions, periods in which symptoms decrease or disappear for days, weeks, or months, although symptoms usually eventually reappear. Ms. Shaune D. Today many dealers are in the habit of cleaning up vehicles for their used car lots and simply marking them up 4 to 5 thousand dollars and hoping an uninformed customer walks in and takes the bait. Not at Paul Browns! With the power of the internet, today’s car shoppers are smarter than ever. With a few clicks, buyers can find plenty of vehicles to choose from and quickly realize what’s a good deal and what’s not. We save you the time. Before a vehicle hits our lot, we scan the market within a 300 mile radius to survey how each dealer has priced similar vehicles. Over 25,000 websites are surveyed as well as local newspapers and classifieds. With that information in hand we carefully price our vehicle to be within the top ten percent of the market for similar vehicles. Regardless of profit or loss, that’s where they are priced. Why? To save you time, and help us be assured that we are providing a good car at a good value. We are not guessing at it like other dealers, we can show you what a great deal you are getting. On every vehicle on our lot you will find a copy of the nationally recognized Kelly Blue Book retail value. Below that you will find our Paul Brown Warehouse Price (usually thousands under Kelly Blue Book). Our vehicles are re-priced weekly so keep checking back with us, sometimes the deals get even sweeter. Don’t wait long though, with warehouse pricing, over 90 percent of our inventory is sold within 30 days. Stk#PR1233A, 99,573 miles. Wow! As you are aware, public education in New York is currently facing tremendous fiscal challenges. The Governor’s budget proposal would cut school aid by $1.5 billion dollars, the largest reduction ever proposed by a governor. We all agree that the state must take action in order to reduce its budget gap. However, this proposal will have a disproportionately negative impact on high need rural districts such as ours. The students of Bolivar-Richburg deserve the same quality of educational opportunities as every other child in New York State, and we need to let our legislators know that we expect to be treated fairly when it comes to funding our schools. All of the school leaders in our area recently met with Senator Young to voice our concerns, and many of us spoke with legislators in Albany earlier this week. We will continue to advocate for our students. When the school and community speak in one voice to our elected officials, we can help ensure that all of our student’s will receive the excellent education that prepares them for a successful future. While we face a reduction in financial resources, we also face an increase in expectations for student performance. There will be changes coming through our Race to the Top initiative and the implementation of the Common Core Standards. We will also be refining our Response to Intervention process, in order to more effectively identify and support our most at-risk students. This is an exciting and challenging time that requires us to approach these challenges from a new perspective. As a first step in that direction, we have realigned our Administrative Team. Beginning on March 14th, Mike Schott will become our new Director of Curriculum, and Michelle McDowell will be the Elementary Principal. Both administrators are dedicated to the success of our school and students, and I know they will work hard to make good things happen. We are fortunate to have leaders who can share their talents in new ways in order to strengthen our District. The development of our 2011-2012 budget continues to be a major focus of our work during these winter months. We will be having a Budget Workshop with the Board of Education on March 26th, with the goal of having our budget adopted at the April 5th Board meeting. In our April newsletter, we will have more details about our plan to share with you. In the meantime, if you have any questions or thoughts that you would like to share with us, please feel free to call. I will be happy to talk with you. success. As the principal of this building I ask all of you to encourage our students to continue to work hard and praise them for their efforts. In terms of Regents success, I feel compelled to share with you that according to Business First, our high school ranked 52nd out of 119 Western New York high schools. Some highlights to come from this report were the 3rd place ranking in U.S. History, 26th in E.L.A. and 19th in Chemistry. While proud of these results, we are never satisfied with where we currently rank, and hope that with parent support, teacher commitment and student buy-in, that we will continue to improve in all areas of academic achievement. Speaking of academic achievement, I would like to speak to President Obama’s State of the Union Address he gave back on January 25, 2011. I hope that many of you had the opportunity to watch the President speak that evening, and in particular listen to him talk about education and its importance for our great nation. The President stated, “If we are to win the future...then we also have to win the race to educate our kids.” The President later stated that over half of all new jobs that are being created in our country are going to require an education beyond a high school diploma. Finally Mr. Obama went on to challenge all of us citizens, parents and teachers to rise to the challenge facing us today in terms of ensuring that our students are given every possible opportunity to succeed. He said that the primary responsibility to make sure that this happens, starts in the home and that it is a parents’ responsibility to instill a love of learning in their child. He gave specific examples of how as parents we need to take the time to turn off the T.V. and sit down with our children and make sure that homework is done. He also challenged those of us in education to create schools based on high expectations and of high performance. In terms of what the President said that evening, I could not agree with him more. We as a nation, state and community we are facing some incredibility difficult times, and now is the time for us all, parents and schools, to come together for the sake of our children and our country. We cannot sit back and expect one side to take on the responsibility of ensuring our children are properly educated and capable of competing for these new jobs and against foreign competition. We both bare this responsibility evenly and need to make a concerted effort to see that this happens. While the task may seem daunting, really all it requires is a sacrifice of some of our own personal time and a willingness to take the initiative to talk to our children, students, parents and teachers. The reality is that we all want to same thing, that being our children to be safe, healthy and prosperous. If all of us are willing to talk to one another a little more, invest a little more of our time in children, and be adults, parents and role models, then the likelihood that they are safe, healthy and prosperous grows immensely. As you walk into the entrance of the Bolivar-Richburg Middle/High School there is a statement etched in the granite which reads, “The intelligence of the people is the security of the nation.” What a poignant statement and one that I hope we all believe in and support. Thank you for your time and support of our children and this district. Marilyn Capawan Superintendent of Schools John R. Marshall Secondary Principal CALENDAR CHANGES Due to the use of two snow days this year, April 8 and May 31, will now be school days. School will be in session these two days. May 27 remains a tentative day of no school, if no more snow days are used. ELEMENTARY NEWS By: Michael Schott Elementary Principal I have very mixed feelings as I write my last article as the elementary principal. As I told you in an earlier letter, I will be changing positions on March 14th and assuming the role of Director of Curriculum. I am eagerly looking forward to the change in my career. During my seven years as principal, I will be taking with me many fond memories. They say that as a teacher, if you can impact at least one student’s life in a positive way, then you have done your job. I have to say that the faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members through the years have certainly impacted my life in a positive way. Creating a positive learning environment at the elementary where students felt safe and teachers wanted to come to work has been one of my goals each year. I have also encouraged teachers to step out of their comfort zone and take chances when it came to instruction. I wanted people to feel my door was always open and they could feel free to come and talk with me about any issue. While the road was not always smooth, I feel I have nurtured an atmosphere at the elementary where everyone felt appreciated for what they were trying to accomplish in the ever changing world of education. I want to thank the students, parents, faculty, and staff for your team work, your willingness to help, your effort, and dedication to making Bolivar-Richburg Elementary a great place to learn and work. A very special thank you to Mrs. Brenda Robinson for the outstanding job she has done as my secretary. I have received many positive e-mails, written notes, phone calls, and people stopping by my office to let me know how they feel about what has taken place during the past seven years and the job I have done. I have never felt more appreciated by as many people and I truly want to thank you all for making a positive difference in my life. SECONDARY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members, As I sit here pondering the thoughts for my next newsletter, I am shocked to think that the month of March has arrived and we are well past the midway point of the 201011 school year. So much has been accomplished by our students, but in essence, the most critical time in terms of achieving success lies ahead of us in the next few months. It is so critical that we not rest on our laurels or past achievements, but rather, bear down and focus and prepare to give maximum effort to ensure classroom and Regents PAGE 11 Bolivar-Richburg Central School News continued... MARCH HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE NEWS Mrs. Crandall-Bean SAT REVIEW CLASS OFFERED AT B-RCS We are making arrangements with Jamestown Community College to hold SAT review classes in Bolivar for interested B-RCS students. The review classes will be held from April 25th-28th and May 2-5, at our high school building from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., just in time for juniors who plan on taking the SAT on May 7th. The instructors will be provided from J.C.C. and class size is limited to the first twenty-two students who register. Juniors who will be taking the SAT will be given priority. Students must register in the high school guidance office. The cost of the course will be $20.00 (to be used to purchase books, which students may keep) Students will be registered when they bring in their payment for the class. After April 5, students from other districts will be accepted. PENN YORK COLLEGE NIGHT SCHEDULED Penn York College Night, the premier college night in our area, will once again be held at St. Bonaventure University on March 30, from 6:30 - 8:30 P.M. Over one hundred colleges and other educational institutions will be represented this year. Students and parents have the opportunity to speak with college representatives, receive college brochures and financial aid information. I cannot stress how important it is for collegebound students, particularly juniors, to attend this program. Since many of the colleges in attendance will not visit our school during the school year, this may be the only chance to speak with a particular college’s representative. Programs will be available in the high school guidance office. FINANCIAL AID REMINDERS Seniors have been reminded to be sure that they have filed the correct financial aid applications to the colleges to which they have applied. In addition to all colleges requiring the FAFSA, some colleges have their own application and, more importantly, its very own filing deadline. Students should call their college financial aid department to verify forms and deadlines. We have several good financial aid brochures available for parents in our guidance office or, go to the FAFSA website at www.fafsa.ed.gov. SAT AND ACT DATES FOR COLLEGE-BOUND JUNIORS A few years ago the SAT and ACT tests both added a writing section to their assessments. The SAT includes a required writing section that will consist of multiple choice questions and a 25-minute essay. The ACT also includes a writing section; however, the writing section is optional. If a student takes the ACT without the writing test the test fee is $33, with the writing part the fee is $48.00. I recommend that students find out if the college they plan on attending requires the writing section...typically, they do not. I will soon be meeting with all juniors to set up their senior year schedules. At those meetings I have stressed the importance for them to take either the SAT or ACT this spring (both, if they can afford it). Either one of these tests will be required by virtually every four-year college and by some two-year colleges. Most colleges will accept the SAT or the ACT test for admissions and scholarship reasons. Applications are available in the high school guidance office or online. The information below will be helpful..... TEST SAT SAT ACT TEST DATE May 7 June 4 June 11 REGISTRATION DUE April 8 April 29 May 6 TEST FEE $47.00 $47.00 $33.00/$48.00 TEST CENTER Olean/Wellsville Olean Olean/Wellsville NATIONAL COLLEGE FAIR TO BE HELD IN BUFFALO The National College Fair will be held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center on March 29 from 9 AM - 12 PM and 6 - 8 PM and on March 30th from 9AM - 12 PM. Major colleges from all over the United States will be sending representatives to speak with students in grades 10-12. For a complete overview of this college fair go to www.nacannet.org/ncfstudent. Students may go to www.gotomyNCF.com and pre-register before attending the event. By pre-registering, students can print a bar coded confirmation sheet to be used as an electronic ID. At the event, students can have a college scan their bar code so they’ll get all the student’s information, eliminating the time and hassle for students to fill out inquiry cards for colleges...a really neat idea! Flyers for this college fair are located in the Guidance Office. SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS TO SELECT COURSES FOR THE 2011-12 SCHOOL YEAR During the month of March, all sophomores and juniors will sit down with me to select courses for next school year. Parents are required to sign the student schedule request form to show approval of the courses selected. However, parents are more than welcome to stop in, e-mail me at [email protected] or call me at 928-2985 if you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s choice of courses for next year. Graduation. Summer vacation. Everybody wants to look their best for these important occasions. So people head for the tanning salon to get that bronzed look. The problem is: tanning beds and natural sunlight increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Tanning beds thin skin that has been damaged by natural sunlight, making it less able to heal. People who use tanning beds more than once a month are much more likely to develop malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, affecting more than one million people. Treated early, non-melanoma skin cancers are now almost 100 percent curable. The risk for skin cancer is greatest for people who are fair-skinned, have blonde, red, or light hair, and with blue, gray, or green eyes. Artificial tanning is more dangerous for people who burn easily or have had one or more blistering sunburns, have already been treated for skin cancer, or have a family member who has had skin cancer. Women are more likely to get skin cancer on their legs, while men are more likely to develop it on their backs. Non-melanoma skin cancers can be prevented by several simple methods: 1) avoid tanning beds and exposure to natural sunlight, especially between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM; 2) use SPF creams of 30 or higher; 3) check skin monthly for moles, bumps, or sores that have changed color, size, or shape; have a friend or family member check your back; 4) have annual physical exams with your doctor or dermatologist; 5) use sunless tanning lotions or sprays to get the tanned look; 6) wear a hat that shades the neck and face, and long sleeves when being in the sun is unavoidable. We will be covering Mendel and his peas, using Punnett Squares to determine the statistical outcome of certain plant and human crosses, and subsequently will be “making a baby” in lab. GREETINGS, EVERYONE! March is an exciting month, for spring officially begins soon (the ground hog said so!). If there is a ninth grade science student in your home, s/he should be able to tell you how the Sun has shifted its position for rise and set from winter solstice to the spring equinox (and why it happens, hopefully!). Please do ask. We closed our astronomy unit prior to February break. On a related note, we were able to see the full moon on the night of February 18th due to the (seemingly rare) clear skies - and what a sight it was. Hopefully you, too, noticed it. It was great to start the atmosphere unit with exciting weather this week, and I do hope that your basements are dry! We will continue with the weather and climate theme for the remainder of quarter three and start of quarter four. Perhaps by the end of April, we will all have a better appreciation about why the weather forecasters are not always spot on. It’s not as easy as it looks. Please remember to feel free to contact me should you have a concern about how your child is doing in science class. I am quicker with e-mail but will certainly get back to you should you choose to call. Happy Spring! GREETINGS FROM THE ORCHESTRA ROOM! March is national Music in Our Schools month. The study of music contributes to young people’s development through heightened skills in listening, reading, selfexpression, and creativity. Music education in school includes a broad range of types of music and active musical experiences such as orchestra, band, choir and general music classes for grades K-8. Music and the other arts significantly enhance the morale and quality of our school environment as well as being vitally important to the success of many of our children. Many students find the arts one of their primary reasons for attending school regularly. As a parent, you can show support for your child by attending a concert, taking them to an out-of-district musical event or having an impromptu “concert” at home, complete with applause. This month, we are hosting two All County concerts coming up here at BRCS: March 5th and March 19th. Both concerts start at 2 p.m. Please come out and support our students. Solo festival at Fillmore CSD was a huge success for our string players. Many students received “Outstanding” ratings!!! I have sent home copies of their adjudication sheets so you can share in their achievement. Our more advanced players are going to the NYSSMA Solo festival later in the spring, which we are hosting on June 3rd and 4th. Practice, practice, practice.... It is the best way to keep track of what is “happening” with Wolverine Softball this season. Go Wolverines!!! MY DAY AS A CHEERLEADING COACH By Coach Emery Where can you find acrobatics, synchronized dance, and outstanding sportsmanship... at the Section V Cheerleading Championships! In my day as a cheerleading coach I was so impressed by the athleticism and talent of these athletes that I became an instant fan of this high adrenalin competition! This experience has given me a whole new appreciation for this sport. We have a great group of girls cheering and if you have never been to a cheerleading competition you don’t know what you are missing! Thanks girls for a great day! Thanks again to these area businesses who help our students apply what they learn and thanks to all the students and parents for all their hard work! Good luck to our winners as they advance on to the Regional competition at Alfred State College. By Coach Emery If Terry Pegula is looking for new prospects for the Sabres, he might want to come to the next session of our BRCS Hockey Club! We have had a ton of fun playing hockey every other Saturday the last few months. Maybe the highlight to date was the time Mr. Conklin came down and played a few weeks ago. If you are looking for tomorrow’s NHL players, check out the BRCS Hockey Club. PROMOTING GOOD HEALTH THROUGH DANCE “Talk about a workout,” stated Mr. Emery after completing a session of the Cotton Eyed Joe! Mr. Emery and Mrs. Auman have just wrapped up their dance unit which featured ... the Electric Slide, the Cupid Shuffle, the Cotton Eyed Joe, the Cha Cha Slide, and the Pata Pata. Part of our SPARKS training we have done over the last few years included doing a dance unit for something a little different. Back in the day, Physical Education mainly taught square dancing, or in my case Disco dancing. Mrs. Auman and I just wanted to give the students another form of exercise that we thought would allow them to have some fun doing. I think for the most part, the students enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see the kids put their new moves into action at our next dance! PAGE 13 Bolivar-Richburg Central School News continued... FIRST GRADE Mrs. Allen, Mrs. McClellan, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Rickicki..... The first graders have been doing a variety of activities this month. We have decided that if we keep very busy maybe we will stay warmer. What a long winter this has been! Our theme this month in reading has been Changes. We have thought about what is changing in our world. We read “Frog and Toad Together” by Arnold Lobel. We laughed at how toad tried to get his garden to grow. He didn’t realize how important patience is. That is something we all need. Next, we read about life cycles in “I’m a Caterpillar” by Jean Marzollo. We enjoy reading nonfiction and learning the facts about these changes. Since we were reading about animals, our play “Where Are My Animal Friends?” by William Chin fit right in. It was a fun way to discuss hibernation and migration. Our Flat Stanley letters are returning. It is so exciting to receive letters, pictures and postcards from all over the country detailing Stanley’s adventures. When visiting New Hampshire, one Flat Stanley actually met a Flat Stanley from another state. Mrs. Allen’s class especially enjoyed a box from Louisiana with a cake, Mardi Gras beads, and goodie cups. We thank Lillian’s Aunt Karen for spoiling us. SAHM SCIENCE AND PHYSICS… Our focus, as always is to apply what we are learning. A short while ago we were looking at forces and we studied Newton’s Laws. One of his laws states, for every force there is an equal but opposite force. How did we apply that? We used our hovercraft. When the air pushes down, the floor pushes back… yes the floor can push. My students got to experience it, while calculating the force. You can see our picture of one of my students “floating” down the hall. MONEYSAVER SHOPPING GUIDE MARCH 8, 2011 We also studied centripetal force, the force that pulls us in so we go in a circle. Our application here required the students to fly toys around the room in a circle. Here you can see Harry Potter about to fly around the room, and yes these toys are designed to do that. You should have seen them… Flying cows, bats, storks, Batman, Robin, and more all flying at once. In every case, students had to do the calculations and explain why they go in a circle. We also looked at waves… check out the hair on one of the students as he looks at waves. Our most recent unit was static electricity and you probably guessed it, balloons galore and students had to explain why that was happening. I hope you are beginning to see that we see Physics everyday… but seeing is only a small part of what we do in class, we do the calculations and explain why it occurs. ELEMENTARY PARENTS… IMPORTANT NEWS.. EVERYONE IS INVITED TO OUR BOOK FAIR!!! March 10th -15th the BRCS High School Science Club will be sponsoring the Scholastic BOOK FAIR! During the fair your son or daughter will have a chance to look at lots of books and pick out ones to purchase. PLEASE ENCOURAGE them to get some books and READ!!! READING IS VERY IMPORTANT for all their years in school! There will be a Family time Monday night, March 14th from 6-8:30 for parents to come to the fair with their children. The event will be held in the Multipurpose Room. Please come and bring your child and help us encourage reading! If you have any questions please contact Mr. Sahm, the Science Club Advisor, at the high school (928-2561). We look forward to seeing you there! We have been working on place value in math. This can be a bit tricky, but with plenty of practice the children are getting better at counting to 100 and deciding how many tens and ones the number has. Mrs. Allen’s class appreciated Mrs. Walter’s help with bowling each week. Keeping score was a fun way to practice place value. Of course, we also continued to practice addition and subtraction. Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Snyder and classes say a fond farewell to their student teachers from St. Bonaventure. Ms. Scherrer and Ms. Janak have been wonderful additions to our school. We wish them well on their education journey. We will certainly miss them. We celebrated Read Across America the first week of March in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd. It was a fun week packed with guest readers, Black, White and Red Day in honor of the Cat in the Hat, Crazy Hair Day, Wacky Outfit Day, Silly Socks Day, PJ Day and plenty of books. Our first grade students of month are: Mrs. Allen- Lillian Johnson Mrs. McClellan- Darien Champlin Mrs. Scott- Makayla Pope Mrs. Rickicki- Madison Sisson Mrs. Snyder- Cameron Shelley All are patriotic first graders who make us proud in many ways. They are hard workers and wonderful examples for their peers. Our March birthdays are: Jason Chind - 16th Kaylee Keiser - 18th Shayla Burdick - 20th Michaela Cawley - 21st Darien Champlin - 24th We wish a happy birthday to all these first graders! KINDERGARTEN Mrs. Sitter-Tompkins, Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Mitchell, Miss Glover..... The classes in the kindergarten wing recently celebrated the 100th Day of School. This year each student was asked to collect 100 pennies that were used in all kinds of fun counting projects. The children practiced their counting skills, number naming, sequence and comparing numbers. All of these activities corresponded with the NYS Learning Standards for math. The best part of all this fun was that $100 was collected and donated to the Allegany County SPCA in Wellsville. Classes that participated in these activities were Mrs. Sitter-Tompkins’, Miss Glover’s, Mrs. Rogers’, Mrs. Mitchell’s, Mrs. Snyder’s and Mrs. Childs’. Thank you to all the parents, friends and families of our students for helping out and donating to this fun and worthwhile cause. It is hard to believe that another month has passed already. February was a quick month. The students celebrated Valentine’s Day with a card exchange. We celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd. We read Dr. Seuss stories, made the Cat in the Hat, and we made Oobleck out of corn starch and water. The students really enjoyed the day! The students have been learning more letters. They have been working on the letters Ll, Gg, and short Ee as well as consonant blends. We have also been working on new sight words and they are one, two, three, four, five, here, go, and from. In reading the students have been learning about exploring and adventures. We have also been working on sequencing, character, as well as classify and categorize in reading. We are finishing simple subtraction in math. We will be working next on number identification and writing to 31. The kindergarten teachers would like to wish a happy March birthday to Benjamin Kisel on the 4th, Danica Yates on the 8th, Lillian Nease on the 9th, Hayvin Sheahen on the 10th, Giunevere Coats on the 15th, and Jerrit Pastor on the 21st. SECOND GRADE Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Lemaster, Mrs. Livingston, Mr. Bogey..... Mrs. Hill’s student of the month is Daniel Barkley. Daniel works so hard every day and is always willing to help a friend in need. Keep up the amazing work Daniel! Mrs. Livingston’s student of the month is Thomas Duchesne. He is such a hard worker and a great friend to everyone. Mrs. Lemaster’s student of the month is Logan Bess! He works hard, stays on task, and was the first in our room to complete and turn in his 7 hours of reading for Darien Lake! Mr. Bogey’s student of the month is Katarina Barrett. Keep up the great work! March birthdays: March 19th - Courtney Hitchcock March 29th - Gary Curtis March 29th - Lucas Higby The last month was very busy. We have been learning about so many interesting things in reading. We are learning about life cycles. First, we studied the life cycle of a plant and now we are learning about the life cycle of a frog! For Dr. Seuss week, we got to dress up and listen to special people read to us. Ask your child who stopped in to read to them. Mr. Sahm has also started coming in once a month to give us a science show to teach us about the science that goes along with what we are reading. In math, we are finishing up geometry and starting to learn about money! Here is an idea of how to practice at home. Put a set of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies on a table with some heads and tails of each coin showing. Have your child identify each kind of coin, tell its value, and tell which coin has the greatest value and which has the least value. Then have your child sort the coins, putting all coins of the same value together. We made T-shirts with 100 items on them to help us celebrate the 100th day of school! Thanks Mrs. Livingston for the great idea! PAGE 14 Bolivar-Richburg Central School News continued... THIRD GRADE Mr. Smith, Mr. McCarthy, Ms. Miles..... February students of the month are: Felicity Mattison, Neleha Weidemann, and Emma Kinnicutt. Each student is hard-working and very helpful in the classroom. Congratulations girls! Third graders are working on multiplication facts, Reading for Meaning, and participated in Dr. Seuss activities recently. Practicing multiplication facts at home and reading each night are wonderful “homework” activities for all third graders. Upcoming Events/Important Dates: Book Fair: March 9-16 Spring Concert: March 29 NY State Assessments: Math and English/Language Arts: May ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS Miss Lawton and Mr. Zilker..... Happy March! We, like most of you, are hoping the snow leaves for good! Starting March 7, the PE Department will be once again hosting their skating unit. The unit will run from March 7 to March 25. Starting right out with our new little kindergarteners, all the way up to our experienced 5th graders, it is impressive to see the amount of improvement that each student shows and the progression that takes place. The first week of March, K-2 students will begin skating with paper plates instead of roller skates. Using paper plates provides a safe way for students to explore with the concept of skating and give them the idea of pushing side to side as opposed to just walking with skates on. After the first week, students will be able to try out roller skating and participate in various skating games we have planned. We have plenty of skates and sizes this year thanks to our PEP Grant. If you want to send your child to school with a helmet you are more than welcome to. We ask that their name is put somewhere on the helmet and please store it in their locker until their class time. If you do not want to send in a helmet with your child, that is not a problem. We have some extra helmets that we can loan out for the period. As always, we are looking forward to this unit to show students a different way they can be active. The boys in grades 3-5 finished up a basketball unit. They did a great job with learning the different skills and eventually playing an actual game. It was exciting to see. The 4th and 5th graders have finished up their dance unit with their dance party! Thank you to everybody who brought in decorations. The kids, as well as myself, had a blast dancing! K-2 finished up their balance unit and did a great job working with the balance beam, river stones, blue dots, and the big feet, as well as hula hooping. . MONEYSAVER SHOPPING GUIDE MARCH 8, 2011 FOURTH GRADE Mr. Conklin, Mr. Pruch, Mrs. Perry..... In social studies, we have been learning about the beginning of our country. We have studied the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and The Bill of Rights. Miss Musham, our student teacher from St. Bonaventure, has been teaching these topics to the classes and has done a terrific job. She has also been doing reading in my homeroom for several weeks. Unfortunately, this is her last week with us as she heads over to Scio Central for her second student teaching experience. I have enjoyed the experience with Miss Musham and learned much from her. She will be missed by all of us in 4th grade. ODYSSEY OF THE MIND NEWS Mrs. McClellan and Mrs. Snyder..... This year, students at Bolivar Richburg are participating in the Odyssey of the Mind Competition. It is a competition that tests creative thinking and problem solving skills. Bolivar-Richburg is sending four teams to participate in this year’s event being held at Wellsville Central School on March 12. Two teams are made up of fourth and fifth graders; the two other teams are at the middle school and high school levels. Students have two tasks to complete during the competition. They need to present a solution to a long-term problem, for which they have spent the last two months preparing. They will also be given a problem that they will have to “spontaneously” solve at the event. The students have been working very hard on their presentations, developing their thinking skills, and learning the importance of teamwork. If a team places first in their division, they will advance to the state competition held in Binghamton later in March. Good luck to all of our teams! Fourth grade students of the month are Micah Crump, Adam Jones and Grace Pierce. Congratulations to these children for a job well done!! Chess sets made by Heidi Sturdevant and Baylee Thomas Miss Musham..... My experience at Bolivar-Richburg will never be forgotten. Spending seven weeks in the 4th grade was full of amazing experiences, wonderful students and an even better cooperative teacher, Mr. Conklin. I would like to thank the entire staff for making my time here at Bolivar-Richburg an incredible experience. I have gained knowledge and skills that I will carry with me wherever I may teach. Thank you to everyone, I will miss you all. Mrs. Childs...... Well here we are; March has arrived. Hopefully, this means spring is on its way. We have been busy in our classroom. The students have been working diligently on multiplication and division, as well as sentence structure and multi-paragraph essays. This month we will be learning geometry concepts and reviewing measurement. February’s student of the month is Tyler Haley. Tyler has made improvements in writing, sentence formation and multiplication. Nice job Tyler. In February, we also celebrated Mrs. Slocum’s and Mrs. Snyder’s birthdays. Teaming up with Mrs. Snyder’s class to celebrate these birthdays was a lot of fun. Miss Janak from St. Bonaventure University and the Odyssey of the Mind teams “The Gurgle Turtles” and “The Golden Burgers” FIFTH GRADE Miss Weitzel, Mrs. Cawley, Mr. Lounsberry..... At this time, Mr. Lounsberry’s social studies classes are studying the Revolutionary War. There are many amazing personalities from this time period. Among them are: George Washington, Patrick Henry, Nathan Hale, Thomas Jefferson, and Paul Revere. These “Founding Fathers” all played important parts in our country’s birth. What other important Americans from this time period can you think of? In science class, we have begun a unit on liquids. We will be doing many experiments to learn about adhesion, cohesion, and density. In addition, everyone has been hard at work on a project for the fifth grade science fair. You can join us on Thursday, March 17, from 5:30 to 6:30 in the multipurpose room in Richburg if you want to see the results of everyone’s great efforts. Winners will be announced at 6:15. Come and be amazed at the wonderful projects that are turned in. Graphing, percentages and geometry are the new units to be learned in math. Do you remember what you used a protractor for? What are obtuse and acute angles? A triangle’s interior angles must add up to what? These are just a few questions your child will be able to answer. Reviewing for the state math test is just around the corner, and I will be keeping groups after school so please be aware of a green Project Catchup slip asking for your permission to keep your child after school. Your support will be greatly appreciated. Students for the month are Te’a Johnson for Mrs. Cawley, Keldon Smith for Mr. Lounsberry, and Jessen Giles for Ms. Weitzel. All of these students are hard-working, polite, and are good friends to their classmates. BRCS ELEMENTARY MUSIC Miss Bell..... Tuesday, March 29 2nd-3rd Grade Concert 6:30 p.m. • Richburg Gym Student performers should arrive at 6:00 p.m. in their own classrooms. Student performers should dress up. If you have questions regarding dress code, please contact me ([email protected]). Please plan to provide transportation for your child that evening. If you anticipate this being a problem, contact me as soon as possible. The children have worked hard, and we are very much looking forward to this concert! This is a group of fantastic singers, so I can guarantee we will all enjoy hearing their voices! READ ACROSS AMERICA From Mrs. Young, Mrs. Neudeck and Mrs. Day..... “A person’s a person, no matter how small!” Theodor Geisel would say. “Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted.” In honor of Dr. Seuss Day (March 2), here is a suggested reading list: For Beginning Readers The Cat in the Hat The Cat in the Hat Comes Back One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish Hop on Pop Dr. Seuss’s ABC The Foot Book I Can Read with My Eyes Shut Other Books by Dr. Seuss: Yertle the Turtle If I Ran the Zoo And to Think That I saw it on Mulberry Street The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins The Sneetches & Other Stories The Lorax The Butter Battle Book You’re Only Old Once! PENNY WARS The Bolivar-Richburg Elementary School is again participating in the Penny Wars. Penny Wars benefits people living in Allegany County who are dealing with cancer. Last year the faculty, staff and students raised $900 and are looking forward to surpassing this amount. If you are able to, please send in any spare change you have with your child(ren). Penny Wars will continue through March 23. Thank you to all those who have already donated. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. LAWN TRACTOR GIVEAWAY! Bring In That Old Ride, It’s Time! All around the country, a white powdered substance with names like Vanilla Sky, Ivory Wave, and White Rush are being purchased by individuals. The powder is then snorted, producing a meth-like high. The white powder is not cocaine or any other illegal drug. It is simply sold as “bath salts” and can be found at many convenience stores and gas stations around the nation. Increasingly, law enforcement agents and poison control centers say the bath salts with complex chemical names are an emerging threat in several U.S. states where authorities talk of banning their sale. In fact, in Florida and Louisiana, the bath salts have already been banned. Mark Ryan, the director of the Louisiana Poison Center, first heard of a new, legal drug being sold throughout the Southeast in September. In September, Ryan says, the poison center got its first call from an emergency room unsure about what it was dealing with. Soon, the center and poison control hotlines in Florida, California and all over the nation were seeing several cases a day. Ryan says when the drug is abused individuals are unable to control their behavior. “For lack of a better term, they’re flipped out. It’s almost like a psychotic break. They’re extremely anxious and combative, they think there’s stuff trying to get them, they’re See What’s New at... www.moneysaveradvertising.com paranoid, and they’re having hallucinations. So, the encounters are not pleasant,” Ryan says. “And we were finding that some of these guys couldn’t be sedated with the normal drugs that we would use with other stimulants.” Ryan adds that this drug is a stimulant, a lot like coca leaf found in countries like South America and Columbia. However, he says, these are not naturally derived substances but synthetic drugs that are made in labs. Derry Hallmark, Senior Director for Expansion for Narconon Arrowhead, has seen more and more people reaching for help for unusual addictions, such as bath salts and believes in any case drug rehab is the necessary component for anyone to overcome addiction and return to a normal way of life. “The chemical combinations found in these bath salts cause similar highs and withdraw symptoms as methamphetamine,” said Hallmark. “As a result, these drugs have the potential to be very addictive and very dangerous.” “Narconon Arrowhead is prepared to handle any substance addiction and has a great deal of experience with methamphetamine addiction,” adds Hallmark. Narconon Arrowhead is a long term, inpatient drug rehab which handles the full extent of the addiction, both mental and physical and achieves a 70% success rate for permanent sobriety from methamphetamine and all other addictive substances. For more information on methamphetamine drug rehab through Narconon or if you know someone you know who is struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction call Narconon Arrowhead today at 800-468-6933. fb R EAL ESTATE Bill Lake Real Estate William A. There's less fussing, and a wooden splinter might absorb some liquid, causing it to swell enough to pop out a bit more on its own. • Recycling paper is good, but reusing before recycling is even better. Ask your child's classroom teacher if he or she has a "both sides" policy for lined papers. Also, copy paper that's printed on only one side can be quartered for use as quick notepaper. OLD OLEAN RIFLE RANGE TO BE INSPECTED BY NATIONAL GUARD BUREAU OLEAN, NY (03/03/2011)(readMedia) - The National Guard Bureau will be checking an old National Guard rifle range in Olean for potential environmental concerns this summer. The range is one of 23 former New York Army National Guard training sites that the National Guard Bureau will be inspecting for potential hazards. Current property owners are in the process of being asked to allow contractors on their property to conduct this check. The Department of Defense Military Munitions Response Program mandated the inspections. The program is being conducted worldwide to address human health, safety, and environmental concerns at former non-operational defense sites. This includes over 400 sites in 48 states and two territories formerly used by the National Guard. Inspectors will try to identify environmental liabilities that may be present due to historical use of the property formerly owned, leased or used by the New York Army National Guard for training. In addition to visually surveying the site and checking it with hand-held metal detectors and GPS units, inspectors will be collecting surface soil samples to a depth less than two to three inches. The inspectors will collect the samples with disposable plastic spoons, which are about the size of an ice cream scoop. The Olean Small Arms Range was used from about 1904 to 1955. The range was approximately 4.25 acres; the range layout and boundary have been verified, but the types of ammunition used there are unknown. The former range is located on private farmland south of the Allegheny River. Anyone who has documents, records or photographs of the range are encouraged to contact Master Sgt. Corine Lombardo at mailto: [email protected] or (518) 786-4579. The Munitions Response process consists of seven stages; a preliminary assessment to identify locations, research historical records, land usage and past incident(s) in the area, which was completed in 2008; site inspections which will begin in summer 2011, to collect additional information, data and samples necessary to determine if following actions are warranted at a site. Parsons Infrastructure & Technology Group, Inc., an engineering and construction firm, will provide technical project planning and conduct historical research for this endeavor. Inspection and cleanup of these Department of Defense sites is eligible for Defense State Memorandum of Agreement funding under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program. The 23 sites located around the state were used as local training areas for National Guard units. The training sites vary in size from 3.7 to 939 acres and were used between 1873 and 1994, primarily for small arms range firing. Currently, the New York National Guard has three training sites located in Guilderland, Youngstown and at Camp Smith, near Peekskill. Soldiers also train regularly at Ft. Drum, near Watertown. Have you ever noticed how some people do all the talking? And that they’re usually the ones just making a living? And how other people are really good listeners? And that they’re more often the ones making a life and a living? I was in a room recently in which a man took all the air out of the room by talking only about himself. I watched while other people tried to be polite and listen, or gently change the subject to include others in the conversation, but to no avail. They changed their body language to move away from the person and some just left the room. I was in a different room recently in which one person deftly engaged each of the others in the conversation, showing interest in their interests, asking about their families, and so on. I watched as people moved closer together. This room was filled with what I call conversation generosity. The loving thing to do with others is to be generous in your conversation. So love others enough to listen as you make a positive life this week. State Agencies Urge Taxpayers To Consider Alternatives To Costly Refund Anticipation Loans NEW YORK, NY (02/22/ 2011)(readMedia)-- It’s tax time, and many New Yorkers will try to collect their refunds as quickly as possible. Some will consider a refund anticipation loan (RAL) or refund anticipation check (RAC) to speed up the process. However, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and the New York State Consumer Protection Board are urging taxpayers to consider lower-cost or free alternatives to receiving federal tax refunds. What is a RAL? A RAL is not a quick, fast or instant refund. Instead, it is a high-interest bank loan secured by the taxpayer’s anticipated federal refund. While the promise of quick cash can be tempting, RALs are expensive, as some lenders charge substantial fees and very high interest rates that reduce the amount of a refund. According to a recent study of these products done by the U.S. Department of the Treasury for the 2008 tax year, approximately 4% of New York taxpayers received RALs and 8% received RACs. This is lower than the national average. Fortunately, there are fast and inexpensive ways to get both federal and state tax refunds: • Taxpayers who file electronically and use direct deposit will get their federal and State tax refunds the quickest • Taxpayers without bank accounts can get fast refunds by filing electronically and having their refunds deposited to a prepaid debit or payroll card which can be used for everyday financial transactions. The card can be an existing prepaid payroll or debit card that the taxpayer already has, or a new MyAccountCard issued by the U.S. Treasury’s financial agent. MyAccountCard is part of a debit card pilot program being conducted by the IRS this filing season. MyAccountCards are only available to those who received an offer letter from the U.S. Treasury Department. What is a RAC? RACs are marketed to taxpayers who don’t have bank accounts and/or who do not have the ability to pay tax preparation fees up front. After the refund check is deposited into the temporary account and the preparation fees are deducted by the preparer, the institution then issues a check to the taxpayer and the account is closed. While a RAC is generally cheaper than a RAL, taxpayers would be wiser to open a bank account of their own and arrange to have tax refunds direct-deposited. Consumer Bill of Rights Regarding Tax Preparers New York’s Consumer Bill of Rights Regarding Tax Preparers prohibits tax preparers from advertising RALs as refunds. For example, advertising a RAL as an instant refund is prohibited. Additionally, any advertisement by a tax preparer that mentions RALs must conspicuously state that a RAL is, in fact, a loan and that a fee or interest will be charged by the lending institution. The lending institution must be identified in the advertisement. In addition, before a taxpayer enters into a RAL, the tax preparer facilitating the loan must provide a disclosure statement to the taxpayer, in writing and in at least 14-point type, setting forth key information that explains: • A taxpayer isn’t required to take a RAL in order to receive a tax refund • The amount of fees and interest charged for a RAL • The amount the taxpayer will receive after the fees and interest are deducted • The annual percentage rate that will be charged • The amount of the refund if the taxpayer doesn’t take a RAL • The anticipated date a refund will be received if the taxpayer doesn’t take a RAL Before a taxpayer enters into a RAC agreement, the tax preparer must provide a written disclosure statement that explains: • A taxpayer isn’t required to take a RAC in order to receive a tax refund • The amount of fees a taxpayer will pay for a RAC For more information about filing your taxes, visit the Tax Department’s website at www.tax.ny.gov or call 518-457-1981. The really bad news is that an item purchased in a second on credit can often take years to pay off. The Real Cost Of Debt Consider the following: If you have a $3,000 balance at 19.8 percent interest and you pay the minimum of 3.5 percent of the balance, or $20.00 - whichever is greater -and you make no new purchases, it will take more than 10 years to pay off the loan. Plus, you will end up paying more than $2,300 in interest charges. When Compound Interest Works Against You While compound interest can be a powerful tool, working for you when saving, it can also work against you when applied to a debt. When you pay just the minimum balance on a credit card, for instance, each month, your new balance is the principal plus the interest and that amount gets compounded over and over again. Tips On Managing Debt • Use the right card Credit cards are a fact of life. The key is to use the kind that you pay off each month. That can help keep you out of unmanageable debt. And don’t use it on a whim, only when you must. • Do you really want to co-sign?-Co-signing a loan for someone is a big responsibility. Take a deep breath and think twice before you do it. If the other person defaults on the loan, you are responsible for repayment. Failure to pay can hurt or ruin your credit. Also, co-signing a loan will count against your debt ratio and could cause you to be refused an auto or home loan. • Let your lender know when things change-If your marital status changes or any other situation in which you have a joint account changes, contact your lender immediately. Any joint accounts that you signed off on are usually still yours. • Know what you are agreeing to - Before you sign a credit card application, make sure you know what the “cost of the credit” really is. It’s usually best to go with the card with the lowest annual fee and the lowest interest rate. John Addison is co-CEO of Primerica. A tax-exempt organization’s annual gross receipts or total assets are used to determine which of the three versions of Form 990 it is required to file. IRS.gov contains information about which form to file. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 made important changes to rules regarding tax-exempt organizations’ annual filing requirements, which took effect as of the beginning of 2007. The IRS issued guidance (Revenue Procedure 2011-15) that will allow more tax-exempt organizations to file the e-Postcard rather than the Form 990EZ or the standard Form 990. For tax years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2010, most tax-exempt organizations whose gross annual receipts are normally $50,000 or less can file the e-Postcard. The threshold was previously set at $25,000 or less. (However, supporting organizations of the Stocks/Finance news and information, check out $ $ 32 Greenwich Street - Belmont (585.268.7835) 9 W. (The Form 990-N was created for small tax-exempt organizations that had not previously had a filing requirement.) Second, it required all supporting organizations, regardless of their size, to file the standard Form 990 or Form 990-EZ. Finally, the law specifies that any taxexempt organization that fails to file for three consecutive years automatically loses its federal tax-exempt status. Any tax-exempt organization that has not yet complied with these new requirements should do so immediately. If an organization loses its exemption, it will have to reapply with the IRS to regain its tax-exempt status. Any income received between the revocation date and renewed exemption may be taxable.
