For years, families and friends have come to this area to relax, unwind and play together. And they go away with cherished memories that last a lifetime. The memories take many different forms. But they all center on our beautiful lake and its exciting water-related activities. Boating, swimming, water-skiing, fshing, camping, biking, hiking and picnicking are among the favorites. And the regional calendar includes spectacular freworks, festivals at the campground, parties at the beach, and other events open to the public. Memorable dining experiences are offered by the many outstanding restaurants and bars serving the area. After dark, your choices for enjoyment might include a cruise of the lake under the stars, sitting around a camp fre or dancing to live music at a local night spot. This Visitors’ Guide is designed to help you plan the memories you will create in the year ahead. Whether you are a life-long devotee of the region or a frst-time visitor, this publication will serve you well as an information resource and a comprehensive guide to activities included on the 2012 calendar. And remember to patronize the outstanding businesses which have provided the generous support needed to make this complimentary service possible. The advertisers you see in this guide are all members of the Indian Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. When the glacier receded about 10,000 years ago, it left behind a large swamp and many smaller lakes. The lake’s water is supplied from the north and the south forks of the Upper Great Miami River, Cherokee Mans Run, Blackhawk Creek and Van Horn Creek. The lake was named because several Native American nations lived, fshed and hunted the area. It was originally a group of small lakes and wetlands measuring over 640 acres. In the 1850’s, the lake became Lewistown Reservoir, which was used as a water supply for the Miami and Erie Canal. The spillway, located at State Route 366, was built by Irish laborers. The men dug north and south from the lake to make a 333-mile canal from Cleveland to Portsmouth. A dam was built at the Miami River, and that fooded an area of about 1,000 acres. That food created the islands and promontories. The canal system was outperformed by the rail system in just a few years. The lake was repurposed as a leisure-time activity center, and automobiles began bringing people from near and far. Indian Lake, then having grown to over 5,000 acres, became a center for music and Chautauquas. Sandy Beach Amusement Park offered excursion boats to take tourists out on the lake. Boats would pick up passengers at Lakeview or Russells Point Harbor. Boats that offered passengers a view were the Curio, the Orchard Island Queen, the Queen of Sandee Gables, the Seabird, the Pathfnder, the Miami, the Wegoto, the Lolita, the Thunder and the Chief. The Evelyn One of the largest boats was the Evelyn, which operated from the 1920s to 1956. The boat was named by French Wilgus’ daughter. Passengers could take a tour for 25 cents. Things from the Past 17 The Evelyn, owned by Henry Blum and Cliff Binkley, had two decks. The top deck was partly open air and partly covered by a canopy. Small orchestras even came aboard to entertain during moonlight cruises. The Mark Twain This miniaturized copy of a paddleboat was built by Floyd Dever, a local resident. The all-metal boat was 18 feet wide, 60 feet long and could seat 175 passengers. The boat was built in the late 1950s/early 1960s. Let’s look back at some of the most well known historical fgures with ties to the area. Simon Kenton The pioneer popularized in novels like The Frontiersman by Allan W. Eckert, was well known for being a daring scout. Native Americans knew him as “the man whose gun is never empty” because he could run and reload his fintlock at the same time. His contemporaries and friends included Daniel Boone and Mississippi scout George Rogers Clark, who later came to live in Kenton’s property in Logan County. Legend says Kenton and two partners stole all the horses from an Indian village. He was pursued and later captured for that deed. The Indians condemned him to death in Solomon Town, a Wyandot village that was between Belle Center and Huntsville. A British ransom helped him escape that fate. He later returned to the area with Colonel Benjamin Logan in the 1786 destruction of Blue Jacket Town, which is modern-day Bellefontaine. Tecumseh This Shawnee chief was born in 1768, likely at Old Piqua. This town was along the Mad River near modern-day Springfeld. Tecumseh brought Indian nations located west of the Appalachian Mountains together in a group to protect their way of life from white settlers. He was in Logan County often, encouraging others to continue in their traditions. He is known for his eloquence and made such an impression that both the United States and Canada named warships after him. Monuments These men and more are commemorated in markers and monuments throughout Logan County. Visit the Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce or the Logan County and Indian Lake Historical Society for information on locations. (These stories were submitted by the Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce. It was written for the Chamber by Chick Heithaus, who is a part-time resident of the Indian Lake area. His book, “Indian Lake: A View form the East Side,” is available at the Chamber of Commerce and other popular locations.) Legends of Indian Lake 18 At the turn of the last century, developers and local residents began thinking of Indian Lake as a getaway worth marketing. In 1907, John O’Connor opened O’Connor’s Landing on the northwest side of his Logan County farm. The business served as a hot spot on the east side of the lake for decades. At its peak, there were 30 rental cottages, rental boats and a lodge with rooms, a restaurant and a general store with an extensive bait selection. O’Connor’s Landing was still going strong in the mid- 1980’s, being well-known for its Friday night seafood buffet. They even offered waterside dining. In June 1985, an explosion and fre destroyed the business. The remaining structures were removed in 1993. A residential development there still bears the family name. The Sandy Beach Park was another hot spot. Lester Wilgus and his son, French, opened it in 1924. Promoters Pat Webster and E.S. Delscamp of Dayton, built a large hall on park land to hold dance marathons and contests in 1930. That next year, the National Endurance Dance Marathon was held in the new hall for 80 days and 2 hours. Sandy Beach was repurposed in 1957 by George B. Quatman. He purchased the former Stardust Ballroom, Old Vienna Gardens and Plaza Hotel and renamed them San Juan Amusement Park. It was promoted as “Ohio’s Million Dollar Playground” and the “Atlantic City of the West.” The park featured an “out and back” wooden coaster - known as “Coaster,” “Thriller,” “Big Dipper” and “Silver Streak” at various points in history. The park also offered a penny arcade, a carousel, a millrace ride, a ferris wheel, a funhouse, boat excursions, and a boardwalk to Sandy Beach Island for swimming. No alcoholic beverages were permitted. Ballroom rules specifed, “all girls and women must wear skirts and the boys and men conventional trousers and slacks.” No jeans were allowed and men had to wear ties or have their shirt collar buttoned. No rock ‘n’ roll was allowed. It was also home to dance pavilions and ballrooms, which were very popular. Minnewawa Dance Pavilion This pavilion was a centerpiece of Sandy Beach Amusement Park. The building cost $50,000 to build and was fnished in 1924. It measured 262 feet by 82 feet, making it one of the largest dance halls in the state. The design of the hall featured arches, each of which was decorated with a town name. Visitors would plan to rendezvous with their party at the arch representing their city. Each dance required a 5 cent ticket. Some nights featured two bands, which would alternate songs to provide a break for the musicians. The swing musical style was popular, and big bands would often play in the hall. A popular band led by Paul Whiteman entertained Indian Lake crowds. They were in such demand that they were broadcast live by a Dayton radio station. Whiteman’s regular pianist, Henry Lange, went on to form his own orchestra and play many years at the Minnewawa. He composed a waltz about the lake called “The Shores of Indian Lake.” The Minnewawa was destroyed by fre in 1935. Fire departments from as far away as Lima helped douse the blaze. The fre was devastating and the total damage estimate was $100,000. The Dreamland Ballroom In 1910, the Dreamland Ballroom was built by A.B. Jones on the west side of the Russells Point Harbor. In 1935, the Wilgus family sold Sandy Beach Park and bought this location, renovated and changed its name to Wooden Shoe Gardens. It was well-known for its foor shows featuring 18 girls in the chorus line. A 14-piece orchestra and vaudeville acts also entertained. The cover charge was 25 cents. At a later point, the name was changed again to Old Vienna Night Club. French Wilgus doubled the size of the ballroom to present bigger shows, including Paul Reno’s Follies Review. The Marathon Ballroom/ Danceland Ballroom In 1930, dance marathon promoters Pat Webster and E.S. Delscamp of Dayton built a dance marathon building on Wilgus property with the understanding that the hall ownership would transfer to the Wilgus family after the marathons were completed. In 1931, the National Endurance Dance Marathon was held there. The dances attracted spectators and competitors from far and wide. When the marathon trend passed, the ballroom closed and was returned to the Wilgus family. They moved the building to Wilgus Drive and Main Street, expanded it, and renamed it the Danceland. The name later changed again to the Stardust Ballroom and featured big bands. Dancing in Minnewawa, 1925 Indian Lake and Music 21 The Night Hawk Club Around 1928, the Chautauqua building was vacated on Orchard Island and remained closed for some time. It was reopened and operated as a dinner club, called the Night Hawk Club and later renamed the Silver Slipper. It was known for its Chinese food, entertainment and dancing, featuring Cliff Perrine and his nine-piece orchestra. The building was later used for a skating rink. Little Dutch Gardens Opening May, 26, 1934, it featured foor shows. Composer Arthur Longbreak, a Belle Center native, played the hall along with well-known trumpet player Lloyd Smith. El Casino Night Club This hall celebrated its grand opening on May 27, 1936, with Frankie Schenk and his orchestra. The El Casino was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Herb Wentz, and it was known as a very attractive club. It was 104 feet long and 40 feet wide. It opened in 1936 and featured a nautical theme. It had a dance foor on the main deck, tables and chairs on the second deck, and a pilot house for private parties on the top deck. Floor shows were staged on the main deck, and the food was of the same good quality as the nearby Plaza Hotel. Because of its size, the hall featured small musical groups. As Superintendent of Indian Lake Local Schools, I am honored to be part of this amazing community. I think you will agree Indian Lake is a wonderful place to live, work and play! In addition to our stellar community attractions, the area also boasts an excellent school system. Indian Lake Local Schools are located on a beautiful state of the art campus where children from kindergarten through grade 12 have numerous opportunities to both learn and interact with one another. As a district with a student body totaling 1,800, we are large enough to offer a vast array of excellent academic programs as well as varied opportunities socially and athletically. However, we are also small enough to provide students with small group and individual instruction necessary to create well rounded students. In addition to our academic offerings, our student councils and service programs are community-minded and work to support local needs. Students are also athletically competitive in everything from middle school football, to girls’ soccer and high school wrestling and golf, along with all other traditional athletic programs. Go Lakers! Indian Lake Middle School is also an excellent place to grow and learn for students in grades 5 through 8. Our students enjoy small class sizes, specialized attention and opportunities to participate in athletics and extracurricular programs. Students in Kindergarten through grade 4 are housed in the beautiful new Indian Lake Elementary School building, built in 2009. Indian Lake Elementary was recently awarded the School of Promise award from the Ohio Department of Education. The building is one of only 122 schools in the state of Ohio to receive the recognition; they achieved a rating of “Excellent with Distinction” on the recent State Report Card. The honor of School of Promise is based on Indian Lake Elementary’s high test scores in mathematics and reading. From every angle, Indian Lake is a great place to live, to work, to play and to learn. I’m proud to be a part of the community and I am sure you will agree that Indian Lake Local Schools are simply the best!
